Yo SB there have been a multitude of pauper locals poppin up in my local area and I've been absolutely crushing them. I wanna ty for the vids as I feel like they helped me a ton in navigating this format as a Modern/Pioneer player
It is ALL OVER!!! 🤣🤣🤣 God, you saw the line and took it! I would have totally missed it. (I've lost tourneys for missing stuff like that!) That was so epic! ❤️
Yea! Almost missed it myself! And then I missed the ‘free’ block on augur as wel but got there!
@@SnapBolt Btw, you know that annoying glitch where it makes you click every mana symbol. It happens to me too! Is it really the Ctrl button? Because I almost never press that button, and that costs a lot of time in some decks.
Dear Max,
thank you for your concentrated efforts trying to show the world what a wholesome and balanced mechanic the initiative is.
Xoxoxo
Lolol
finally!! a better UB deck to play with. Nice deck!!!
UB upgraded
Glad to finally see the old border basics!
Yea, I’ve been rocking them recently and really enjoying them. Great art, great feel
WELCOME BACK! It's been a minute
Thanks
Seer chump and win with gurmag.
Sometime you’re on the back foot and need to make plays like that to win 😉
Totally, I thought for sure they’d have another blocker or two second main but they didn’t!
first game what an attack opponent :)
Thought they would have a blocker main 2 for sure
hi Max. I ended up adding the cards with initiative to my ub fairies because in the vs fairies/initiative I lost the 6 rounds that I crossed them. What decks do you think could stop the initiative? I see initiative a little better than monarch because you end up playing "free" spells. Cheers
Good question. I think affinity is likely still the best deck, but these Initiative decks are still extremely powerful as well. It's tough to say what's good against them yet, but decks that can steal and then protect the Initiative themselves, like caw-gate, can be reasonable against Initiative strategies.
@@SnapBolt how do you think affinity outperforms even those turbo initiative decks?
@@montekristo643 I played with monob initiative on my LGS and its damn hard to win against affinity because of all the draw power, grave repercursion, cheap spells and passive ramp. Initiative is really strong, but it's not as consistent as other decks, like boros synth, cawgate and affinity
just aggro those durdlers.
you gotta build fog but with monarch + initative, keep them forever!
Or maybe initiative + prismatic strands build??
@@SnapBolt that would be sick. If you can run white then you can also run ephemerate for more initative!
That fucking bluff from the opponent at 4 life!
Yea! Or just didn’t realize I would attack back!
Why no block on the Augur in this spot? Am i missing something? No way we're playing around a second fumes here, right?
@@Meister_WU I watched that part back, and I realized I just made a mistake there. I think I just somehow missed it after changing my initial blocks.
Likely didn’t matter too much. I had to win on the crack back or I would lose anyway but still a mistake
Ok, i thought i was missing some info right there. Yeah the block was definitely free imo. I don't think you put your opponent on two fumes or other tricks with the deck he's playing
@@Meister_WU definitely. I agree, just messed up 👍🏼
Agony warp is insane again inside out combo right? Give their guy -3 attack and it kills their dude plus it gets around the standard bearer you have to target
Ez 2 for 1 if it works
Do you think that Sneak would work in an Ephemerate deck?
Yes, absolutely
Decklist link is down :(
Great content tho!
Thanks for letting me know. I think streamdecker is down right now
Back with the fae
More like black with the fae xd
Have you seen anyone trying out a UW evoke type of package for Initiative? I would think that blinking initiative creatures and quickly advancing through the dungeon would be pretty sweet
I have UW Evoke + Initiative brewed up but I haven’t gotten around to testing it yet. Does seem strong!
1:34:30 Ironic. The 1 extra damage would have gotten there lol.
Yea, I threw that game for sure. Good learning experience
Aaaaaaand it's banned
The transition from the standard to this Initiative build seemingly overnight makes me sad. Still cool to see you playing Pauper again, though
Why is it sad to play with the new cards? Because they are too strong?
What is even more sad is people crying over new cards without given the proper time for the meta to adapt.
The same happened to monarch and swiftspear, but at the end, both were acceptable cards/mechanics.
Dark Ritual into Battlerager just looks like doing a really bad impression of Doomsday in other formats or something to me. The Ninja + Faerie package is a Pauper original thing and just make for a super clean deck where everything is an answer or card advantage. Monarch fit into that image as much as I dislike it, and it also begs the question of whether people should have been on the ritual plan B if it was as strong as people said all along
IDK Max, card advantage seems lacking with this deck. I'd personally ditch the Brainstorm and sub in Ponder, and maybe go a little heavier on the ninjas.
Normal card advantage is lacking, but we gain lots of advantage from Initiative. More ninjas is a good option but ponder over brainstorm doesn’t really change anything for me
Correction: Dark Ritual *finally* broke Pauper... Initiative cards wouldn't really be problematic if you actually had to wait turn 4 to play them as intended :)
Going to disagree here. Initiative is the problem. There are other ways to ramp out Initiative creatures and removing dark ritual from a build like this and adding interaction might even be a stronger way to go.
@@SnapBolt of course there are other ways to ramp, but to me, the key difference is that they're relegated to Green (which honestly needs all the help it can get) and require a lot more cards & things to go right for you (2 Forests + Utopia Sprawl + Arbor Elf without summoning sickness vs just jamming Dark Ritual Turn 2). Don't get me wrong, Initiative is extremely powerful, no doubts about it, but just like Monarch it's manageable when played "normally".
I feel like the question we should ask ourselves is: what's worse? The inelegant but ultimately interactable mechanic stapled to a bunch of 4+ mana drops? Or the best ritual in the game - a card so broken and unbalanced that it can't even get regularly reprinted in Master sets of all places? Not to mention, at this point WoTC seems very comfortable with printing more multiplayer mechanics like Initiative in the future. Banning 5-10 cards every time a new Commander set comes out feels like a tall order for them. On the other hand, we know for a fact that WoTC will never print another Dark Ritual (thank goodness).
IMO people underestimate Ritual in Pauper since it's only as strong as the bullshit it can accelerate. The only reason it remained legal for so long is because there was simply nothing too powerful to do with it. But Pauper's power level will grow as time goes by, and eventually we'll have to address the issue of rituals and fast mana.
Just my 2 cents, sorry for the wall of text! Still love your content👍
@@leonardorodola2327 hyper agree, no surprise imo either as everyone unanimously agreed that its busted by all playing them in their lists.
@Peanut the Greyhound i tried turn two monarch a while ago with ritual and thorn in a guardian pestilence build so turn two four mana was as legit as I could make it, but I should have tried 4 thorn 4 palace sentinel 4 strands at the same time.
@Peanut the Greyhound aside from the redundancy of Monarch + Initiative, the key part is that Initiative plays to the board, which is better than drawing extra cards earlier in the game.
On the second trigger, you basically turn your Initiative guy into a x/6 (aka "nigh-unkillable damage sponge defending your emblem"). Normally this wouldn't be so bad on turn 5, but when you cheat the Initiative into play with Dark Ritual, it becomes backbreaking for the opponent.
I'm starting to feel like Initiative is accentuating the Monarch problem even more, specially since you can have Initiative and Monarch at the same time.
And because there's only 1 of each color (except black), if your favorite color didn't get a good Initiative card, like white, you kinda lose a lot of potential, compared to black, who gets both the best Initiative and Monarch card.
Pauper's Black is definitely Legacy's Blue with all the nice upgrade it has gotten over the years. I mean, cast down is pretty much swords to plowshare in pauper
I know that I'm coming from an extremely salty point of view, but I already wish initiative to be banned. Won first league game 2 - 0 vs a faeries list similar to this one (playing Boros synth), I then proceeded to loose 4 games in a row against initative focused lists (meaning that initiative is the main thing the deck does, it's not just an organic part of the deck), most games were decided by my opponent having or not having turn 1/2 initiative. I won almost every game where they didn't turbo out, and kept the game close even when I lost. I may be bitter, but I'm just not fine when the best thing you can do in a lower powered format is to push out the best cards in the format on turn 1 and 2 where interaction isn't avilable. Affinity in this regard is similar, powering out meta defining threats for less mana then their counterparts and supported by better card advantage has always been a problem, but at least there is a little more room, design wise, to hate on the deck. Almost every deck has its own form of artifact hate and probably new ones will always come in future sets. What's the counter play to initiative? Initiative itself? Are we going to print good initiative creatures in white and red so that every deck in the format is forced to play the mechanic to have a fair fight?
This is just a rant, of course, but do you think the mechanic deserves banning considerations? I felt the format was just in a fun spot before initiative where I had fun even when I lost (which is an important part of magic to anyone that need to fight for their positive records on leagues) and now I'm just so bitter towards the format.
Initiative does feel a bit too strong. Monarch is also insane in a 2 player match but Initiative is a viable win condition on its own. 2 Thorns of the Black Rose is mostly meaningless if you are already Monarch but 2 Vicious Battleragers means you get to Cascade+ faster. Initiative also does something that cannot be replicated. A Boros Bounce deck could draw more cards than Monarch but nothing is doing what Initiative does.
First impressions, the initiative mechanic really warps games in a negative way. Good games, but the mechanic is not that fun to watch or play.
Yea, the mechanic might be too much for the format to handle. We’ll have to wait and see
lol. ritual was basically bad every single game.
