Thanks alot man. This saved me a major headache. Method #2 was VERY easy and requires no special tools. The passenger side was counterclockwise and the driver's side was clockwise. THANKS!!!!

I watch your video last night , Today I performed rear brakes on a 2015 Subaru Outback . Thank you very much .
I used #2 choice and all worked 100% ( was worried at 1st ) I used a E12 Torx socket to turn the caliper piston clockwise .
Overall your system was a success .. A Big Thank you.

    Method 2 is the ticket
    Thank god for UA-cam
I was scratching my head because piston would only screw in so far

Thank you for this video, unlike others I’ve seen this video was actually helpful in getting this job done.

Another way I've seen it is to disconnect the electric brake motor connector apply 12V straight to the motor and watch way piston goes. If piston compresses instead of retract, reverse polarity. Electric parking brake, a solution to a problem that never existed

I did it and it works. You can run the motor forward and back by switching the wires.

Wasn’t looking forward to replacing the brakes on my Ascent knowing the fact that it had electric parking brake! This video helps and will do method 1!👌

Excellent video. Thanks for posting it. Just a quick heads up, if you live in the “rust belt” of USA ie Maine, New Hampshire, Mass, or anywhere they salt the roads in the winter time and rust is always a concern, be careful when removing the electric parking brake motor like in method #2. I had one of the 5mm bolts snap. Not a real big deal, just rusted and a pain to extract.
If you have the luxury of time and the work space, maybe spray those two 5mm bolts at the ebrake motor the night before with a good penetrating fluid. They are pretty tiny, it didn’t take much force when mine snapped. (besides, you can spin that caliper piston back inside with a pair of Channel locks in about 3 minutes)

Thanks for the video. i am planning on doing brake job on my 2015 legacy next week. I think method # 1 is the way to go since its simple. I would rather not mess with opening the emergency brake actuator as i have heard that sometimes those two screws holding it can strip and could be costly.

On my 2917 Outback. I didn’t need any special tools, even though all the you tube videos said I did. I am a mechanic. So I ve done a lot a brakes. I used a channel locks to turn the parking brake piston. Then I just found a chunk of steel that fit in the caliper and with a screwdriver, levered the piston in the rest of the way. The rotors were stuck on, but there’s threaded holes that you put two bolts in, metric, and push the rotors off.

I liked method 2, but I am curious if I have to have that tablet computer tool that was on the seat? I bought the rotors and pads for my 2015 Legacy 3.6, but now my Emergency Brake Actuator light has come on. So I’m wondering if it’s something my mechanic can fix 🤷🏻‍♀️

Could you clarify one thing about method #1? I see that you're using an open end
wrench to turn the thrust nut counterclockwise as you turn the thrust bolt clockwise. Is that done to compensate for the thread pitch on the thrust bolt being different from the thread pitch on the internal bolt that's part of the p-brake mechanism? If that is why you're doing it, it would indicate that the thread pitch on the thrust bolt is less than the thread pitch on the internal bolt in the p-brake mechanism. That seems kind of surprising; I would think the internal bolt in the p-brake mechanism would have a smaller pitch (i.e., distance between threads) to allow greater force to be applied to the caliper piston.

I am trying to find a video of someone disconnecting that electric parking brake connector.. that is the proper way to do this vs. risk getting grit into that greased gear box.

Just use some needle nose pliers. No special tool needed.

I think the middle method looks best to me, or maybe the method described in the comment where you just take a battery to it and run it in and out
Here's my question. After you put on the new rotors how do you readjust the parking brake? do you just turn it in until the pads start to rub and then back off a little bit? Will the system recalibrate itself?
    Thank you!
Edit I just noticed the years up in the title. The one I have to work on is a 2011 Forester. Is that the same?

Just engage and disengage the electronic brake 4 or 5 times and it will reset itself.
