Behind the Scenes at Labour Conference 2022

- So, the Tories are in polling meltdown and they've crashed the economy: the election is now Labour's to lose, and here at the annual conference, delegates know it. But is this party still a broad church? Has Keir Starmer abandoned the promises he made to become Labour leader? Has the party finally adopted a bold transformative agenda in this crisis-ridden country? And could Labour really finally be on the brink of power?

No
Have you finished your book or is another 'working holiday' on the cards before Christmas?
Socialist begs for money! 😃
Don't listen to him keep fighting
I'd rather gaugue my eyes out.
Why must you speak to Wes Streeting?!?! As an NHS worker I have been left speechless when he said on LBC that our waiting lists should be handled by private companies. Without disclosing that he’s paid to lobby for a private healthcare provider… groan.
Because like it or not that us who will be Health Secretary soon
Wes Streeting is a political robot built to annoy me.
🤣I thought it was just me!
And me
Could say the same about Owen tbh
nailed that one
He's got an 'uncanny valley' feeling to him. Everything he comes out with just seems so calculated and unnatural, accompanied with a dead-eyed stare. Creepy guy.
Wes and Owen popping off with the passive aggression on sight was the funniest thing. Like Rhaenyra and Queen Alicent in House of the Dragon
i think the same thing happened last year, its great
Your Kinnock reminder is very pertinent Owen - voters had no reason to trust a man who would say anything, and ditch any principle, to get power, and may well do the same again - Starmer lied to get elected leader, it's a reasonable inference he'll do the same when trying to become Prime Minister.
Very telling alright
Blair would say anything to get power, had focus-group led policies that changed with the wind, obsessed about media coverage etc. yet he won 3 elections. The electorate is fickle and seems to have no qualms about voting for liars as recent PMs have demonstrated.
Wes Streeting just does not come across well.
Very annoying guy.
Chris Bryant thought "we would not be in government for another 20 years, because of what happened" - we know that his wing of the party preferred that scenario to a Corbyn government.
you can see that Wes Streeting had prepared his response to his encounter with Owen in advance lol
Kudos to the camera and editing team, great production.
Russell Moyle is great. He's my MP and recently visited my home, to see how shocking my landlord is ☺️.. excellent chap
As a socialist, I cannot find my way to hold my nose and vote for a party that is socialist aggressive. I am convinced that Starmer is nothing more than "Tory Lite".
Let's have PR, and the Labour Party can battle it out with the Lib Dems, and a real left wing party emerge.
Who's going to pass the bill that gives you PR?
@@swarming1092 Hopefully, a coalition.
@@swarming1092 nobody. Labour are an establishment party
how can you not think of the bigger picture ?! we need a new government ASAP or all our lives will just keep getting worse. Honestly you corbynites are worse than brexiteers
100% with you on that Starmer is just a "Tory" under the mask. Labour needs to elect a true socialist leader, Starmer might be a liability come elections.
They say they want a labour government, but they didn't in 2017.
Here here
As an RMT member I have no time for James Purnell mark 2
11:00 "all I care about is being in power".
Sums up Wes Streeting very succinctly. Thanks Wes.
I would hope all the shadow cabinet feel the same way. Would be nice to actually win an election for a change.
@@djjs91 yeah I get that but I can't blame people for caring about policy and actions rather than electing empty suits just to "win".
Not a nice man.
presumably because he wants to be in a position to change people's lives
@@jameslindsay5889 It needs to be a bit of both . Pragmatism when necessary but Socialists ideals driving forward . The question is do we want a Labour that has a great , radical manifesto ( like in 2017 and 2019 ) , but doesnt get elected and deleivers 0% of what it wants or one that isnt quite so radical but gets into power and delivers 70% of what is necessary .?
14:00 Got to love Owen's bright smile facing all the doom and gloom.
Barry swerved that broad church question 😂
Right? What an evasive response to a simple question.
what is a broad church
@@itunesjoe Broad and different range of views and politics
Love these conference videos.
I want to hear views on what members thought of the documentary The Labour Files
Honestly, I'm withdrawing financial support for any "independent media" not asking about it. I'm tired of the silence on it.
He cant talk about that shh, his employer the guardian will put him out of the job, the guardian destroyed corbyn
All my friends are so excited about Keir's speech and i'm like... I've seen this movie before...
LOL It's an open goal right now. Thanks to Corbyn the party coffers are stuffed with cash and all debts paid off (zero credit given from the Blairite wing naturally) so now we'll see the real rulers in the British establishment begin to pave the way for Starmer in the same way they did Blair. Who knows, Starmer may even become another godfather to a Murdoch like Teflon Tony. Expect an endorsement from 'The Sun' soon.
Sir Keith Starmer, steered by Blair and Mandelson will be our historic last prime minister as we hurtle towards flag humping Blairite WWIII.
In my humble opinion, there is no place in the Labour Party for "the right".
in my opinion you should just leave and form an extreme left party and never win an election ever
@@guitarreilly I did leave 😊😊
Should be, however the right are more welcome in Labour than the left. Says it all.
@@guitarreilly and this is why Labour lose more than win, happily ignore a third of the voters, working class and blue collar workers are not supported.
If you're anti left wing you shouldn't be in the party. There's room for disagreement but clearly the Labour Right hate left wingers
Excellent video. I'm not holding my breath for this leadership sticking to it's word if it wins power, but things are certainly looking more hopeful than it has been since Keith... sorry... KEIR, took over.
Thanks!
Labour party is gone and direct action and strikes are coming 🙂
Top tier B-roll!
Wes Streeting vexes me out.
the labour right are wrong’uns ain’t they
Thanks 👍
How sad it is to hear all thse hopeful people and the power hungry centrist mps.
Barry Gardiner trying not to get suspended
Brilliant video Owen.
As a lefty I still like Chris Bryant tbf
🔥🔥🔥 OWEN JONES!! ❤️🔥❤️🔥
Wes Streeting: "Because we're going to rescue and rebuild the NHS".... Oh by rescue do you mean privatise? *Cough* Anything to do with the donation you received from a donor with huge private health interests, Wes? Awful.
The last labour Gvt should have reversed the privatisation of the NHS , but by being in power it did save and drastically improve the NHS . I have worked for the NHS since 1987 under both the tories , then Labour and then the tories again and it was much , much better under labour . I would even go so far to say I think it is worse now and more under threat during the Johnson and Truss premierships than it was under May , Cameron , Major and even Thatcher .
@@scooby1992 Labour continued the privatization when it could have reversed it
Owen - I commented on the Graun's article "How did Keir Starmer’s speech to the Labour conference go? Our panel’s verdict", asking why you weren't one of the panellists. Surprise, surprise, I was moderated with my post disappearing without a place marker. I asked the mods why, and have been ignored. Seems to me they don't like the idea somebody might rain on Keir's parade. Quite sad really.
I will happily put my cross in Labour box next GE, anything to get those vile people in government (of whom I foolishly voted for in 2019) OUT.
Clear messages as there is no message 🙄
It's the Peter Mandleson conference!
Starmer out... tory lite, establishment approved and primed to continue with current events... no groundbreaking policies... £15p/h, rent caps, re-nationalisation of transport and energy..... Change is needed not Starmer
For the first time since I was 18 I won't be voting. I can't stand Starmer, he's a liar. As a socialist I feel politically homeless
Vote green
The Green Party is pretty socialist but as a Lib Dem member I think you should vote Lib Dem 😂 RESPONSIBLE CAPITALISM 💪
Vote green
Interesting. Have you considered crying more?
I'll still be voting (for any left wing candidate) or spoiling my Paper. My city suffered people dying for the vote at Peterloo.
We must have Proportional Representation - It must be the Single Transferable Vote system.
If it is not included in Labour's manifesto - Then vote Liberal Democrat/Green/Plaid Cymru or SNP.
There are around 95 seats where the Liberal Democrats are in 2nd place and could remove unpopular Conservative MPs.
Plaid Cymru could take Ynys Mon in Wales fro the Tories in the next GE.
Labour could win the GE, but think how better it would be if the main opposition party in parliament is the Liberal Democrats and the Tories relegated to 4th place behind the SNP and Plaid Cymru.
With Labour - A Social Democrat / Socialist party
With Liberal democrats & Plaid Cymru - An Egalitarian Capitalist group.
I say this because every Socialist government in Europe, Cuba, USSR and China operated with Capitalism.
It is CRONEY MONOPOLY CAPITALISM THAT IS THE PROBLEM.
Whether it's Labour or the Tories who win this time around, things will not improve for any of us with Srarmer, he has made a second Tory Party that's hardly any different from the first.
you really think things wouldn’t be better under a starmer led govt? even marginally?
@@semiskimmedbeats not enough for the cost of doing so no, this can not be the new Labour standard from now on.
@@chrisgriffin698 ok so it would be thanks
@@chrisgriffin698 sounds like stockhome syndrome to me .
I skipped the Wes Streeting parts coz he's a transphobe and I don't like looking at bigots
Isn't it meant to be a 'green' conference and Chris Bryant's lunch is in plastic 🤔
It looks like a Scientology conference.
😄
Very informative piece Owen. I think the one thing we learnt was , never try and pin down Chris Bryant for an answer when he’s carrying his lunch. 🤐
Bryant was spot on
Great work
Alexei Sayle has it right. Some of those in Labour are the most ghastly people you are likely to meet.
Why is Wes streeting obsessed with talking about arsonists?🔥🔥Because he is one?
Wes is so dopey, it's embarrassing.
Gym membership is really paying off Owen.
Ikr, like damn sir, he's fine af.
Love it. Well done Owen.
Great video Owen. Keep fighting for the labour left.
Love how Chris Bryant and Owen can't look each other in the eye! lol
Hi Owen I hope you know that you've never looked sexier than roasting Blairite MPs live and that's a high bar
AND you're rockin the hell out of that white t-shirt
Love from France
I'm left feeling very mixed after this. it's not as bad as I thought it would be but I don't trust Keir or anything he says. Thank you to you and your team Owen this was a great one!
Interestingly, it's only really Lloyd who went some way to addressing the elephant in the room. The party could present the best manifesto of all time, I still couldn't be reconciled to the way the party has behaved. It's not a safe place to do politics.
Hope you enjoyed your time in the city
All for an English audience - Starmer's comments on the SNP were a disgrace.
I hope the English electorate vote for a Labour government - however, here in Scotland we want to follow a different path, and that path does not include the Labour Party.
Brilliant video. Thank you Owen.
something super slimy about Streeting.
I fired people for lying for less post-job interviews. And lying isn't a great example to set our children so no, Starmer doesn't get a pass from me. Either he goes and takes his ilks with him or I'm done with Labour forever.
Someone take those batteries outta Wes. Please
The 1992 election was before black wednesday
Having a Sir as leader was always a bad idea.
How do we break this 2 party state? Can the greens get bigger? Maybe a new socialist party? Feels abit like America
An ironed to shirt and a protein filled Owen. This country won't know what's hit it. A man on a mission
I feel like going round and saying to MPs the leadership wants to get rid of you is just stoking more division. Let's continue the positive spirit from conference, not undermine it because your man isn't leader anymore. Going up to party members and being condescending when they say they are happy with the party and where we're going is just rude too
There's a hint of 1992 mortgage advisor conference on endowment policy selling strategy about Labour at the moment.
Although I am pleased with the polls currently , there is still a long , hard slog to Gvt . The tories and their friends in the press will resort to smear campaigns and stoking ' culture wars ' as diversionary tactics .
Let's hope Starmer does some of his pledges ,,,this time
its all bs - basically a plan without details is simply wishful thinking
Yes he lied in the leadership election. I’m not at all defending it but you seem fixated on this to the point of failing to ask some very pressing questions now.
To win the majority needed to form a government Labour would need a bigger increase in vote share than 1945 or 1997. And in those years there was no SNP! How do you fight and campaign in a general election when your party accounts are already running a £5mn deficit? Where’s your ground army to knock on doors for you when 200k just left the party?
Jokers to the left, Jokers to the right and labour not in the middle capitalising.
You won't win anything with keiths
Been no rows because mostly centrists have gone to the conference. Democratic socialists I know didn't bother or went to TWT.
All the things that they have said are totally hypocritical
Is this just another Blair period coming along ? We need substance not talk !
The real danger is who will the desperate workers blame and turn to when things get out of hand.!
The EDL was a warning , lets hope those who are in charge understand that !
Barry always makes me laugh
Labour is not a church
I think it's much better when you interview the rank and file. We can hear what the PLP believes every day of the week and they won't go off message.
Jeez bits of that Bryant section was skin crawling awkward 😂
I wonder if feeling that the next election is a safe bet gave Starmer sufficient confidence to make more progressive pledges without the fear of alienating a substantial part of the electorate. let's wait and see what happens next
Simply, he has finally sensed the mood of the country and sees that even a significant number of Tory voters are pro nationalisation of key industry
@@oxtt4314 yeah, I think that's true as well. he's going with the flow, as many politicians do nowadays
@@dovic86 As long as they flow in the right direction that is fine by me . By ' right direction ' I mean a bit further to the left !
@@oxtt4314 Novara Media have kind of debunked Starmers idea of that nationalisation
The Labour Files Owen?
Can't wait for the tory party conference!
Whether Tory or Labour continuous politicians working problems not solutions and getting away with it for decades
Wes, the correct answer to "is Labour a broad church?" is "yes". Any other answer is....weird.
But Owen and his acolytes would also say it is, but at the same time vilify members of their own party.
The left is toxic. It's why anybody with a mental age over 14 moves right.
no Owen 2 years of one liar what's needed is honesty not another liar
Well…that’s fine. Old-school Social Democracy is what we need at a minimum, as long as Mandelson doesn’t stick his foot in the door last-minute I’ll leave it and wait…for now, doesn’t mean I trust him but at least it wasn’t as third way as I was dreading it would be
where are the details though?
Waitrose must be a ghost town.
'The tree that is strongest in the forest is the one that bends in the wind' like some of the nonsense on rings of power that 😂
I think, like you said, the question is whether he'll stick to what he said given his broken pledges from the leadership campaign. I'm really happy with the content of what he said... if he does it. Given how bad the economic situation is, I guess we have to park how authoritarian he seems to be for 5 years.
Say what you will about the Tory conference. But atleast that one drunk dude was having a great time.
Where's the 2023 Conference video?
It’s sad to see left wing MPs stumble over themselves to avoid saying anything bad about the leadership, even sadder that it’s so necessary when you look at Apsana Begum or the recent Al Jazeera videos on Labour.
Yes, when you look to Al Jazeera and support a corrupt hijabi you're really in a place to pretend you're balanced.
A woman who conforms to modesty norms of her mysogenistic fairy tale is hardly consistent with 'socialist'values and is a hypocrite when pretending to stand up for principles and values.
Wes is a quisling.
And you’re in tears.
Why are there adverts highlighting gig economy brands embedded in your videos?
Backbone & testies unfortunately this party as none
"is labour a broad church still" that is a really clever question to ask it even threw barry gardiner off he needed a while to know how to respond
Barry's reaction to your question is a bit spine-chilling... no free speech in Labour anymore!
If Kier delivers to be PM as well as he delivered to be leader it will be a rocky road.
Not as rocky as the road right now.
@@Jay_Johnson True, this govt seem determined to continue the damage like they are going for broke.
Disagree with Owen here (although he/others in this video raise important question on the appeals process) . But I do miss this format of video on the channel. Do more!
Are you going to SNP conference Owen ?
SNP < another other political party in Parliament
@@Bill_Curtis Well duh, its the 3rd biggest party, which, if the supreme court rules in its favour, is on the verge of calling another referendum on Scottish independence which has profound implications on the future of the UK. So pretty damn important.
