You have been to several of these conferences. I don't know if it's just me, but this conference seems to be the most right wing I have ever seen.The rhetoric was insane and it was weird seeing how much everyone loved Farage. The Overton window has shifted right. Labour have turned into the Tories and the Tories have turned into Reform UK. The state of UK politics is depressing.

As far as I can see Labour under Kier Starmer is the only hope we have of avoiding a slide into a terrifying future…maybe you should think about giving him your support Owen?

Not only that, but that he said it while Suella was talking about the importance of challenging ideas one doesn't agree with...
What disturbed me was that a police officer forcibly removed him and detained him for some time it seemed. I don't believe that restrained heckling is a matter that the police should be involved in - if that's now illegal then that's pretty grim...

That conversation with Nige was genuinely incredible. Absolutely unbelievable. He was so close to being like yeah we should pay doctors more but then jumped straight to low key slavery. Would they be allowed holidays? Weekends?!
I always find it funny when right wing populists are pushed on stuff like that. Populist line is of course, pay our british doctors more, but they just out themselves as racist neolibs where the messaging is simply dont like the brown people, they cause all of the issues, no real material conditions improvements for 'natives'.

There are plenty of professions/qualifications that then expect you to stay in that job for X years. If you leave, you have to pay back whatever bursary/scholership you got.
Imo, there would be zero wrong with forcing doctors or teachers to stay in the UK for a set number of years. That said, I think it should come with free education for those people. E.g., wipe off the student loan if they do 10 years in the UK. If they leave, they have to pay it all back as they do today.
Now, do I also think radiographers need to be paid more? Junior doctors? Other medical support staff? Teachers? Absolutely.

I thought this was an exceptional piece of journalism, really exposing this woeful, out-of-touch government - the young Tories did not inspire me with confidence but at least some recognised a disaster when they saw one! Great work Owen!

The conversation between Owen and Andrew Marr was the most articulate and intelligent conversation from the whole piece, the actual politicians and members dont have a clue what they're saying half the time, doesn't seem to be anyone there for Owen to have a truly worthwhile discussion with.
That was my favourite bit - I'm so glad that Owen included it. An island of reflection in a sea of delusion.

I do think we need a maximum 4 year term. Every government that goes on for 5 years seems to lose the plot, this one has taken it to the extreme. Who wants another year of this?

The Lee interview put me in mind of the recent interview or Rory Stewart by Novara. It stuck out when he said people on the left view the Tories as evil and he believes they are generally trying to do what is best for the country (or something along those lines). Vile, angry people like Lee being promoted to leadership positions and given prominence by the party suggests otherwise.
Rory Stewart voted against feeding school kids multiple times amongst other social welfare help. He is one who understand he needs to do pr well while being a snake

That's not the first time I've heard that idea from people. I'm Irish and I've seen people say on forums/social media that doctors should have to repay their state subsidised education by working in Ireland instead of immediately moving to the UK and Australia.

I really appreciate the way Owen Jones is able to have conversations with people he disagrees with politically. It's easy to fly off the handle when discussing these issues, but the best way forward is to have a platform where we have clear and calm debate. That's the way that we have progress and open people's eyes to these issues and policies.

Slightly concerned about Eric Pickles faculties too 🤔 the unknown young member before Andrew Marr was probably the most articulate CP member - you did well in the debate; however, we need more success stories from integration to try and get away from this horrible rhetoric on refuges/migrants fleeing warzones, and also, wanting a better life and taking over areas of cities. I hope this period of hate is a short one for the conservatives and they sort out their identity issues post-Brexit
