- Motor1 Executive Editor Seyth Miersma finds out if Subaru’s new 2017 Impreza has what it takes to challenge the segment-dominating Civic in this week’s Why Buy?
As-tested price: $23,615
Since the launch of the latest-generation Honda Civic last year, the compact model has proven dominant in terms of of sales success and critical reception.Subaru, meanwhile, has stacked win upon win where its recent crossovers are concerned and is hoping to challenge for a few of those Civic buyers - not to mention the Corolla, Focus, and Sentra buyers - with this excellent new 2017 Impreza.
The Impreza would seem to have everything that the average small car buyer is after - fuel economy, a nicer interior, and sharp styling - but with the differentiating factor of all-wheel drive to really bring the message home in cold weather states. We were certainly impressed with the model when we drove it the first time, finding a massively more refined small car than the Impreza that came before it.
In this week’s Why Buy?, we put those conclusions to the more strenuous test of a week-long loan, and lots of time on the battered roads around Detroit. Watch along here as we put this impressive Subaru Impreza through the wringer.

I wish there were an option to have this with a slightly more powerful engine, similar to the 184-hp turbo available in the Mazda3 or the 180-hp turbo in the Civic Sport. I know there's the WRX (but only in sedan) for people who really want to go fast, but I'm not asking for that kind of power. I'd just like it if the performance of the Impreza Sport didn't fall so far short of the styling and handling.
Best car in the segment, whether you need AWD or not, this car hugs corners pretty close to a wrx. (ive rode in both a impreza sport and 2017 wrx). this new impreza is an absolute monster. its definitely going to be in my driveway...
5:56 You forgot to mention the brake-based torque vectoring is exclusive to the Sport trim level and not available on any of the other trim levels. Also, the Sport trim level exclusively has larger brakes and a sport-tuned suspension, while the rest of the lineup does with the smaller brakes and regular comfort-oriented suspension.
Absolutely love my 2017 Subaru Impreza Sport!!
Buen video! - Great video!
Nice review, it's rare you see a review on the sedan. Most reviews are on the hatchback, which you mainly see on the road.
I have the 2017 Subaru Impreza Sport Sedan and absolutely love it. I have had no problems and think this is the best car for the money. To be fair and honest the only criticism I have with this car is that it should have more horsepower. It's not slow but it could be a little bit faster but that's not why I purchased it. It's beautiful, sporty and has a lot of room inside, something the Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic and the Mazda 3 don't have. One more thing, I've had no electronic issues.
How many miles u have on it?
@@senoucisenouci5605 Right now, 43,000 miles and still no problems.
@@SuperPrince1007 how is mpg city highway?
@@senoucisenouci5605 30 on the Highway City I'm not sure, probably 24-25
How has your reliability been? Thinking about getting one.
Why the hell won't they put in the 6spd manual
I'm 6 feet, set the driver seat for my height, went to sit in the back, I had plenty of space :)
It looks like a lot of space back there.
I've been a Subaru fan for life, and convinced a friend to grab one of their newer cars. He got the 2017 Impreza...and had issues with the electronics 3 weeks later. People may want to stay away from this one until the kinks get worked out next year.
the navigation? or electronic as in going into limp mode and throwing up warning lights on the dash?
I've been trying to find out if they've sorted this out yet. Electronics have been a big issue on the 2017 Impreza, and I can't imagine Subaru letting that slide. However, I can't tell if this is likely to be a problem in 2018 Imprezas and Crosstreks.
I see they've had a couple recalls to fix software issues on the 2017 Impreza. So they're doing something about it.
So, you've been a Subaru fan for life, you know only 1 person who has had issues, and now you think folks should stay away from Subarus for a while? That's odd
I loathe all CVTs from a reliability standpoint but Subaru does have one of the best around.
i put a muffler on my impreza Sport and it sounds dope af.
Subaru has probably the best AWD right ? So why do they put thin little ghetto bling low profile tires on it ? Like our roads are as smooth as bowling alleys huh !
I want something new like a Subaru like this one but were I live their to waayy $$$
A big improvement, yet already dated looking and down on power compared to its competition. The sport hatch is probably the best looking version, but I wish it came with a 6sp manual like the upcoming Crosstrek that is based on this car.
Did they ever fix the head gasket issue with the boxer engine?
If you aren't constantly running at 4k+ rpm it's not an issue. These imprezas are utilitarian and if you drive them like a family sedan you won't have problems.
good pricing compare to civic which is very expensive.. even new toyota corolla will not selling car like honda.m
seems like this video is made like the "old top gear" - review style !
It would be a great car if they put the BRZ engine in it with 205 hp and a manual. You still get a choice between a beefier impreza, WRZ and good old BRZ sports coupe. It would be able to compete with the honda SI and be the market leader.. Subaru, Make it SO
How can a car be "pretty conservative" and "boy-racer" at the same time?
Please ditch the halogen head lights !!!
I have the 2018 limited and it has LED projection headlights with automatic high beams.
I would wrap those rear buggy-eyed looking tail lights in red film
did you know, the authorised dealer in Saudi Arabia still don't have the 2017 in showrooms? they still have too many cars from the 2016 model.
thesniperofcs cuz saudi arabia use camel
Do they get a lot of snow in Saudi Arabia?
Ive had mine for 10 months now and i never knew you could hang the fuel cap on the lid like in 06:35 looool
Still don't u understand why the power is lower than a civic. A CIVIC?!
27/36mpg in an all wheel drive car.
It has a lot going for it, although to me (just my opinion) the looks are pretty bland, especially from the front.
damn, thats my favorite part! those c shaped headlights are SHARP
Yeah, I disagree. Besides the BRS, this is my favorite looking Subaru yet. In fact, since I like 4-door sedans, this one is the best yet. For me. YRMV.
the back looks bland.
I get the performance aspect of Subaru but there designs are so bland.
Sasquatch has been found.
Sasquatches love states like Oregon and Washington. And way up north, British Columbia. Look up there for them.
What a weird review. The sound is no good, especially the "announcer" voice that is asking you questions. I'll watch other review videos before finishing this one.
starting to look like the old corolla or Hyundai
NeATaNDtURdy I'v see so many people comment on how it looks like a old Mazda, Camry, corolla, Hyundai, Kia, Honda, Acura, 2000 impala. I just see a very nice looking car. It seems like people can't make up their minds on what it resembles. It looks like an ice cream sandwich.
Adrian Zamora it's loosing it's appeal for the younger generation. but then again, it's the older people who got the money that they are trying to sell this car to
You are correct. It does look like 2009 corolla
NeATaNDtURdy I'm not sure what kind of car this younger generation is craving. This new Impreza has plenty of appeal to a particular market young and old. We leased a 2017 Impreza Sport for $175/month 36 month at a $23,000 even total price tag with full maintenance package and extended warranty. Not a bad deal for an old rich fogie car.
25 here and just bought this car. love the looks! i actually dislike the new cars style from most manufacturers, they are definitively trying way to hard. subaru has a winner here that is truly about half a class above the rest in this segment.
this thing really gives the Corolla a run for its money onbeingthe slowest in segment. Total snore of a vehicle
Blake Swan That's why they make the WRX. The garden variety Impreza, Corolla, and Civic are built to be more utilitarian.
