Basically, the masterball uses swift and X-accuracy calcs, aka not using maths and just hitting every single time. The super and ultra balls though? they do use it and somehow Superballs are more accurate.

Speaking of water/dragon types, in Gen I, this combination would have been broken defensively.
Dragon’s typing resists all of Water’s weaknesses, both types resist Fire and Water, and Water neutralizes Dragon’s Ice weakness. That only leaves Dragon, which did not have any moves that are affected by typing.
Meaning that Water/Dragon has NO weaknesses in Gen I.
I think this is why Gyarados is Water/Flying. If it was Water/Dragon, especially with its stats, it would have been possibly the most broken Pokémon.

    • @kode-man23

This was always my head-cannon. That and just the fact that, with those stats and that movepool, Gyrados would have been a monster if it didn't have a double weakness.

4:07 that's actually a misconception ! The master ball never had that chance to miss, if you remember hearing about it or seeing it, it was either a lie or the good old Mandela effect. In Gen 1 and all Gens to come later, the Master Ball works like Swift and Aerial Ace - They COMPLETELY bypass the check, and hit.
Basically, instead of rolling a number, the code does this:
    If Master Ball then caught
    If Swift then hit
That's it! No missing with the Master Ball, I promise you.

    • @needude7218

While not relevant to gen 1, Swift and Aerial Ace (and other similar moves) could actually miss in gen 4 and I believe 5 also. They ignored the standard accuracy check, but Bright Powder's modifier wasn't ignored.

Horsea's high defense and low HP are a reference to the anatomy of real life sea horses. You remember from that episode of the anime when Misty said Magikarp are all scale and bone? Real world sea horses are like that they have thick armored scales almost like an exoskeleton as well as a skeletal structure made of ring upon ring of bone like a macabre slinky, they are all bone no meat.

Just a general weakness that I've spotted in your playthroughs.
You don't tend to use weaker moves for efficient time spending of pp to delay healing.
In this game its notable that you learn bubblebeam deleting water gun keeping bubble. You then run sort of low on bubblebeam pp. You could have gotten rid of bubble and used water gun a few times to spread pp.

    • @ScottsThoughtsPokemon
      @ScottsThoughtsPokemon  2 роки тому +42

I do think about this. I miss clicked and deleted Water Gun instead of Bubble. Felt bad about it immediately. I'm always trying to minimize the number of center visits I have to make. In this case it didn't matter because the Elixir + Ether on the route allow for the heal to be skipped anyways. Because Horsea learns Water Gun at level 30 I just re-taught it when fighting Diglett in the tunnel and that extended my training time by a small amount and prevented center trips.

Even with Kingdra being a thing, Horsea is a Pokémon I tend to forget about; there are just so many Gen 1 Water types to keep track of... Water types in general really. As a Pokémon I don't think much about, I've no clue what to expect. Interesting to see that despite it's squishy design, Horsea has quite a lot of defence.
6:31 - The Shorts Guy strikes once again! My gosh though, the first ten minutes of this playthrough proved a tough one... and not even because of Brock.
11:24 - I had my Pidgey/Pidgeotto with Razor Wind because child me assumed that a move that took a turn to charge had to be insanely powerful to make up for it. That and it had Wind in it's name so it must be a perfect fit for my Flying type. The move mistakes we make when young.
20:14 - Always happy to learn of some strange and hilarious Gen 1 mechanic trivia from your videos. Growth suddenly having the ability to lower the opponents speed is an amusing scenario. Could such a thing occur with the Burn status and it's attack lowering property?
31:30 - I think the game was pitying you at this point. I didn't expect Horesea to do super well but I'm quite surprised at just how rough the playthrough was... and yet it still managed to rank higher than Goldeen. That's a surprise.

Damn, that's one smooth as hell transition at 26:46. That's beautiful.
Yes, fish can indeed be burnt. Geothermal vents are stupidly hot (and also a good part on why life can exist at the bottom of the ocean!) and underwater volcanoes also cause problems. I doubt it's a common occurrence because most animals tend to not mess with that kind of stuff, but it's certainly a thing that happens.
I love that Surge is such a non-entity that he essentially amounts to an afterthought because the Wrapping Lass is a more pressing issue.

    Before watching the video:
The stats are pretty good for a first-stage pokemon. 70 special and water stab is always great. And right from the get go watergun will make sure Brock won’t delay you. And Ice moves will make Lance easy, aside from Gyarados. 70 defense is quite surprising and will be helpful. Speed is ok. Not great, but good enough to outspeed if your level is high enough.
Agility to boost and take advantage of the badge boost glitch will also help.
Biggest issue will be the lack of coverage. Attack 40 is not great to use normal moves to cover against water pokemon. So, Lorelai will be an issue and so will the final Rival.
This run will be easy most of the time, with a handful of really tough battles, namely Misty, Lorelai and the final Champion.
    After watching:
Interesting! A lot more struggle during regular trainer battles than I thought. And frankly, I thought it would do better. More along the lines of Poliwag.
But I do think that the lack of good attack stat AND normal moves for coverage is quite the drawback.
    Cool video, as always :-)

With the popularity of the genre post jrose (was anyone putting out quality itemless solo runs before him??), it's a real possibility that in the next five years through the community we might have a definitive list for all the pre evolved Pokemon, and I kinda fuckin love it.

Horsea's facial expressions were adorable, and kind of made me feel your grind throughout this playthrough. I had low expectations for Horsea, because I used to train one in gen 2,and it was awfully weak. So I can see why the early game was such a struggle, especially with the youngster shorts(he could be pretty annoying for some pokemon, maybe he should have its own art), having to rely only on bubble, could be very hard. 🤔
For extra coverage I would have used double edge with rest for the mid game, even for the elite 4, maybe it have helped, who knows?
And yeah, getting a flying pokemon could be rough sometimes, it happened to me too, when I tried 3 times to catch a Doudo with a great ball, but it missed, and then I had to buy more from the department store. Then again rng can be cruel, sometimes. 😊
But, hey, managing to cut your real time in more than 20 minutes is really good for a Horsea(and even having a first try victory against Oak 👏👏) . Maybe it would do better in gen 2😌.
By the way, these bloopers are kind of giving me confidence whenever I'm doing my voice overs, so keep on making them, they are super hilarious. 😁

Was slightly frustrating to hear you say Horsea isn't living up to expectations when it was kinda you not saving or seeing PP use that set it back almost twice the time.
But at the same time, I get it. When things go bad in these runs, it probably isn't feeling great to use the pokemon already and then that just gets piled on with slight misplays, making the pokemon feel even worse. Just thought I'd point that out though.
On a seperate note, love your videos Scott and please keep up the amazing content. I've watched every video you've ever made (most of them more than once) and I look forward to every one in the future!

I'm very aware of the "tilt factor" I'm just not sure how to talk about it in a video that's 50 minutes. It's so complex and I could ramble about it for like 5 hours. The psychology of these challenges is fascinating and maybe it's something I should work harder to incorporate into the script. Because of how I write it tends to be the raw feelings that get captured rather than how they all relate.

@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon As someone who does runs for fun on other generations, I can absolutely sympathize. Mental game when performing a challenge in any game os always going to be an incredibly important yet difficult to explain factor. Appreciate the response!

I think the main reason many people didn't use Horsea back in the day is existence of other water types. By the time you can reasonably get it you have other options so it becomes preference and thats assuming you dont have either a Squirtle or took the time to build up a Magikarp or went back depending on version for a pokemon in either area outside the gates of pokemon league or like the area by Bills house. It's difficult even as I'm typing it to justify in my mind because I'm already more attracted to a Krabby for instance.
Best of luck to the little guy in the challenge!

I managed to beat Pokemon Yellow using only one Pikachu. Granted, I was playing more casual (in that I wasn't aiming for fastest time or least resets), but I only used 1 healing item, and that was right before the Champion. It started at Level 88 with Thunderbolt PP Up'ed to the max, Seismic Toss, Reflect, and Body Slam, with the hardest fight easily being the Champ. Sandslash can be a pain when it wants to be, but as long as it doesn't crit, you can take it down in 2 Seismic Tosses. Exeggutor would be a good time to put up Reflect, and his Ninetales can be a pain with Fire Spin and Confuse Ray. Thanks to his Good AI, Jolteon only ever went for Quick Attack (at least from my experience). It took several tries, but my Pikachu became the Undisputed Champion at Level 90 (because it leveled up twice during the League).

I rarely use horsea in playthroughs bc its so hard to get in most games, and it's a trade evolution for kingdra. I don't even know where it is in gen 1, i imagine its a good/super rod encounter.

Yes, Scott, I believe fish can be burnt in water due to a rare and obscure phenomenon known as "scalding" 😉. Try boiling water in a pot then putting your hand in it, you'll understand 😛
I'm just being mean, I'm sorry. I never liked Horsea, I'm afraid. I was forever a Cloyster kid, I loved its design with its little smirk. Have you done a Shellder run already? I don't recall.

Concerning Horsea's relatively high defense, I wonder if we can handwave it as the opposing pokemon being afraid of hurting themselves on Horsea's spikes, so they don't hit quite as hard.

I think Horsea is one of those mons that have the combination of bad enough stats and bad enough moveset, and can't get it going in the early game and realize its potential, despite seemingly having the right tools.

  • @reshawshid

Just to be clear, burns are the result of something becoming so hot that it melts very slightly, it doesn't have to be due to fire. Being burnt means your skin has melted slightly and is damaged, and needs to be replaced. So yeah, fish can be burnt underwater if it gets too hot.

One quick note: If you ever are in the position of needing a flier at Celedon, it might be worth trying to hit the mon first (provided you aren't too overleveled), since reducing it to 50% or less HP roughly doubles the catch rate, which may save time since while animations are off, balls still eat up real time. It's a very niche situation, but it's something worth considering. Obviously, a one-ball catch is faster, but once you get to the second or thrird ball, you probably would have been better off attacking the mon first provided you don't OHKO it. Especially if you have to resort to great balls. Great balls on a spearow/doduo at half hp are nearly guaranteed catches.
