    another tip, that's sort of a mix of using 3d models and drawing a blueprint of a room: if you play any sims games you can create "sets" for your indoor scenes, screen shot it and trace it :D

    I feel bad for the people who feel guilty for tracing backgrounds or props/vehicles (I used to as well!). Now I use a combination of most of the techniques you talk about because otherwise it would take FOREVER to finish an episode. I believe in making the best use of the tools we have at disposition, specially if you're trying to deliver a 50 panel episode :)

      Japanese manga creators who release chapters on a weekly basis will have assistants do a lot of the background art, and the assistants also may or may not use references to trace over. Learning about how manga is made really opened my eyes and made me not feel so hard on myself. I always felt it was an obstacle for me to tell my stories because I like drawing the characters, but I always sucked at backgrounds.

      @@mspsara346 Hi! Personally what I do is set up a house or two that I know will be recurring settings for my comic. Then I can place and move the camera the way I want to capture certain parts of the house (the camera options are limited, but they're good enough for me). Then I just screenshot every angle I want and redraw over that. It's not as automatic as placing 3D elements directly on your canvas and converting it to lines, but it's stil a great time saver if you ask me :)

    I was surprised by how forgiving my readers are for my crappy backgrounds, and they also tend to notice when I put more effort into them which is nice too ; v ; so I'm trying not to stress too much about the backgrounds, but I am aiming to improve!!!
    I also want to incorporate more 3D models into my work to help me make backgrounds, however I think finding materials in a sort of medieval/fantasy setting is more difficult than modern buildings/furniture. So I've been considering picking up blender to learn to make my own! I just gotta sit down and actually take the time to learn haha

    So well said! One day I accidentally created a background using an industrial photo of pipes, ducts, and huge valves on the floor. I just put the image on GIMP and went from there. First I used a filter to "posterize". Next I started tweaking the image by fiddling with color, hue, brightness, contrast, etc. The result was a sort of surreal look, a bit in the grungy side. I instantly thought that it would make a good background for a panel. Yes, inspiration can come from anywhere.

    Again a very, very useful video Walter.
    Backrounds can give the comic a lot. I mean, you can tell alot about the situations there are in, foreshadowing story and supporting the characters.Another thing is worldbuilding when you etablish space or fantasy stuff;)
    It can helpful to think of:
    -What car will your Character drive (old and dirty , luxus limo, SUV etc)
    -What will his house/ room look like according his character. (even in the special "world" you are in)
    -If you do etablishing shots, make shure you might use that place again, having enough reference for the case you might use it again -especially when your Comic is longer than a oneshot.
    -When it comes to houses it can be helpful to browse to houses what are on sale. Sometimes they support even 3d views of every room and you can stop it any time you want shooting references (push the print button on your keyboard and open photoshop/paint whatever> new import) or just use your own school/ cityhall/museum etc. as general reference> take photos! sometimes Google maps can give you at least a general mood and feel of a location.
    -Easier then common 3d progs are roomplaners (as app or online)
    If you have spare time: scetch, scetch scetch;)
    -Don`t copy and paste Star Wars or LOTR (or whatever) but you can use it as Idea.Movies can give you also a hint what you can do with coloring...
    (or you can pet your OCD and google every damn medival building as i did recently, to find my general style for my fantasy inviroment :P)
    Can I use your t-shirt as reference ? I need some nice Tshirt design for my char Gunnar anyway

It will save me time since I don't have to ink or color everything and just need to add the details when I import the render into Clip Studio Paint. If I had to learn drawing everything by hand it will take me years to get to a decent quality since I don't have much spare time to work on my comic.

    I don’t even do comics, came here for tricks in backgrounds for regular illustration, and your tip of drawing out a 2d layout of the space blew my mind. When you’re at a point where you have a nice simple shape-based composition thumbnail and know where the characters go, when you need to figure out *what exactly* goes into the background, even 3D blockouts seem a bit daunting just because you aren’t sure what you’re going for yet, especially if you’re designing some weird fantasy architecture rather than a modern world scene. Making a flat layout seems kinda like a precursor/companion to the 3d method, a quick and not scary way to ideate. Thank you so much!! :)

    Sweet Home 3D takes floor plans and turns them into 3D models! If you have a particular idea for a building or room, you can draw the floor plan and the program does the rest. It even allows you to export the 3D model to use in CSP! (If you export the 3D model, you might have to scale it down in Blender so CSP doesn't crash-ESPECIALLY if you make a full building!)

    Once had to draw some cars in proper perspective for scene elements in a commission. Normally I'm halfway decent with machines, but had little experience with cars. I eventually resorted to using GTA5, walking up to random parked cars and using the camera controls to place them in the proper POV, then taking screenshots to use in tracing their general shapes to insert into the scene.
    Another tactic I used for an indoor scene with fairly ornate furniture was to sketch out an overhead map of the room, lay it on the "surface" in SketchUp Make 2017 (the last free standalone version). I'd then draw the outline of the room and furniture, then use SketchUp's tools to extrude the walls and furniture upward, creating the room in 3D, populateed with basic shapes that I could carve up into simple representations of the furniture for perspective, than drew over those to 'pencil' the backdrop.

    • @walterostlie
      @walterostlie  3 роки тому

      Nice! Very smart techniques. I use the "map" and extrude for a lot of my basic models, even stuff like spaceships and carts. I just need the general shapes to get the scale and perspective right. I can add the details once the mass is there. One thing I've noticed is that after using the model a few times, it becomes easier to free-hand fake it in a lot of panels.

    • @walterostlie
      @walterostlie  3 роки тому

      What program are you using to draw? You may have to find a good level of zoom to draw the length of line you're drawing. Clip Studio has pretty good line stabilization that may help fix some wobbly without making it look like a ruler. If it's a hard scene, I will sketch with a ruler and then free hand over my rulered-line, so that it looks organic but is being informed by a "good" line.

    For me, the problem isn't perspective it's composition. I'm horrible at knowing how much background to put in for what panels. Where I should put the eye level for the best shots for the scene. That kind of stuff. I guess the best bet is keep studying other comic artist's work for this.

      It makes total sense to do that. I have a hard time spending money just like everyone else, but you have to weigh that money against time, which is priceless. So if you're in a position, hiring modelers is a good thing. It's also cool to be able to help the creative machine grow by spreading the money around.

    I wanna ask. I’m not really good at drawing background. It comes an idea to use Google Earth to find good place and I screen capture it then I paint over it and use it as my Webtoon background, is that allowed? will I get copyrighted or banned or something?

  • @chrisneilgreen
    @chrisneilgreen 3 роки тому

    If you use something like Sketchup, and the 3D warehouse, is that legal? Or do you need to credit the original creators or how does that work? For reference I'm talking about setting up your object or scene's angle in Sketchup and then tracing a 2D render? Thoughts?

    • @walterostlie
      @walterostlie  3 роки тому

      I think technically and maybe ethically it would be nice to credit the artists who did the original work. However, I don't know that I've ever seen anyone do it. If you look at those websites, the people usually say what kind of license they want. Some will say do whatever you want and don't credit, others will say you need to credit them. I would say go based on what they request.

      Yeah, it's a tricky line on what is fair use and using other people's creative endeavors to your own advantage without giving the original creator anything in return. But it's the crazy world we live in. Someone else mentioned roblox, never heard of it before, but I'm gonna check it out.
