Thank you for giving a proper tutorial on how to make backgrounds quickly without telling people to use an AI-generated image. At first I was a little worried that the video was going to end up that way, but your dedication to LEARNING art reminded me that you wouldn't rely on AI-generated images, much less tell others to rely on it. Your improvement is seriously incredible and you've inspired me to give backgrounds a proper shot!
There's a lot of 3D artist who share their shaders and stylizes models using blender for free. You don't really need to do anything other than tweaking here and there. I've been using blender from my backgrounds for years. There's channels like Tadayoshi CG, CG Dash, Tawan Sunflower etc who has tutorials and shaders on UA-cam.
i got pretty inspired, i should take more photographs irl and edit it and insert my character, luckily my dad has a big garden with grass and an apple tree, right now there are already apples growing, and when they turn a little red i should take some nice pictures of the tree when its sunny
the editing on this was so phenomenal like always. i loved seeing the video elements just dropping to the bottom of the screen and the little blurbs and AGH tppo you've done it again
The single most helpful art youtuber to exist. Ive seen alot of ppl copying your niche. Goes to show you created a new genre of learning that is both innovative and stylish, as well as incredibly helpful.
Amazing video especially since most artists shy away from backgrounds BUT I will add my two A-hole opinions. 1. Backgrounds using just photos with filters only work if your art is of a high skill. If your character art is not very skilled then the realistic backgrounds even if it's blurred, will emphasize low skill character art and will make everything look inconsistent and look off. 2. The shortcuts mentioned are best used alongside a strong art skills to hand draw or touch up the background with brushes so it blends with your art style. A lot of pro artists that have detailed backgrounds you can see even if they used some kind of 3d or photo base they did hand draw or lineart some parts of it themselves. But regardless, just know using a base for a background is very normalized and is not cheating :)
That's an insightful perspective! I actually had a drawing early on that didn't make it into the video because I struggled to blend it into the background. The drawing itself was pretty bad, and polishing the background couldn't save it. Maybe I should've added that as an example of what doesn't work with these background techniques! Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
Actually just like everything else you can do both. I'm surprised that this video didn't mention overpainting and bish bashing assets from various sources.
A lot of the hand drawn models you see, are actually taken from sites like acon3d. it's made by anime style graphic designers, for anime style graphic designers. I recommend downloading free models from acon, sketchup warehouse and sketchfab, importing them into sketchup/abler/blender/csp, then using whatever methods you like to touch up filters.
your editing is always top tier, better than anything I've ever seen. really great to see a new upload from you!! btw, I always feel amateur compared to other artists because of the software I use, so it's really nice to see you validate ibispaint :D I'll definitely check out the other apps you mentioned too. thanks for the banger vid!
My favourite of the test backgrounds is the one done in Blender... Simple but gorgeous! And I'll definitely check out FIMO. Those filters simulating different camera film look really cool
saw your Genshin art in person at the event! I already thought that it was great but it’s amazing to know that you’re constantly working to improve and already creating more with the new tools you’ve showcased here. I really like the final piece you did and this def helped make backgrounds way less intimidating c:
im amazed. as a graphic designer and a artist i am so amazed by every aspect of this video, thank u for this, this 12 minute video has done more for me than university (graphic design major) and im not even joking
Your editing style is always so satisfying to watch! Everything moves so smoothly, as someone who's still learning at art and sucks at drawing background, these quick ways helps and inspire me!
My guy returned with a banger, always love your analysis to different artists' art styles, it actually gave insight to my tiny brain in approaching different techniques:D
I’m so happy you made this video because although I have years of drawing I still need to work more on backgrounds. This was really helpful and something I really needed! Thank you tppo!
You actually saved my life and Brock my drawing laziness without even realizing it, as a ibis paint user i sometimes use Sakura school simulator backgrounds with some filters
Nice video man! Very useful, nice bunch of techniques that i will be using when wanting to save time. Also, i'm surprised to see some brazilian bossa nova in the background music! Great video and editing again, Hugs from Brazil!!
Ayo welcome back tppo :)), very nice seeing you use free features and whatnot to create bgs as alternatives to people who cant afford stuff like photoshop (
If you use PS, I highly recommend playing around with the camera raw filters > details. It's one of the quickest ways to nudge photos or 3D renders towards looking 2D. After I'll usually use any combo of paint daubs from the filter gallery, layer modes, and adjustment layers. This was the method I used to create my VN backgrounds. Another important factor to using photos or 3D well in 2D drawing is lighting and size of the photo or render. The better my lighting in photos/3D renders, the less I found I needed to do to get them to where I wanted. For size, I tried to find photos/do 3D renders double the size of my canvas.
Just starting watching you, but man, your videos are so easy to follow and have amazing editing skills. Your humble way of explaining and showing your studies makes me have hope and energizes me. Keep doing what you're doing!
Great walkthroughs and thoughts! Just like any tool, each will be suitable for different ideas. But as an extra point to manual painting, I find the more practiced you are with painting from scratch, the more creative your ideas will be - you'll start to recognize the infinite possibilities which can then be filled in with whichever tool you prefer. Or even be comfortable with manually painting unique elements into photographed/3D backgrounds.
You could potentially also use Adobe Illustrator's image trace (not sure if there are other softwares with it) which tends to really flatten photos but can be kinda of iffy for some. Its also a very consistent output so it can be kinda recognisable if you use it a lot
That was great! I think that the best way to use blender is using just as a base for photos, and not the entire render process, unless you really know how to use blender and how to transform photos in 3d( yes, it's possible and fast once you know how). But, my personal choice is just paint over, with brush strokes or whatever you got. Yes, it's harder, but it has the most beautiful results.
A blessing from the Lord! Honestly, yours is literally the only channel I watch on immediate basis, whenever a new video is released. Each and every one of them left me with some new practical knowledge to be put into daily practice.
Amazing video! I've been looking for faster way to draw bagkgrounds too for my animation and comic projects and learn more about blender has been one of my primary goals, as I watch amazing background works from artists like Polygon Runnaway. Now I might as well try some of the ways you did to see if I like it. Thanks!
That's great! If you have clip studio paint, I would highly recommend the 3D function for comics! I didn't emphasize much in the video, but turning 3D into lines and halftones in CSP is so convenient and fast. But Blender can do so much more, so it's a great skill to have for animation too!
Really good video! A fun and less computer-intensive option is, hear me out, minecraft. With a few furniture mods (I reccomend Yuushya Townscape for the anime feel) and shaders (Complementary Reimagined is the best imo) you can get a pretty cool looking background, and with blur it's hard to even spot that is minecraft. Ironically enough, Genshin's own furniture system, the serenitea pot, is also really good for making backgrounds, I use it all the time (but I'm also addicted to the game so....)
I rarely like comment but oh my god The editing on this is SOOO good and the timing of this video is so perfect as well since I thinking about how I was going to do background art for the next piece
He remembered his password finally

OMG ITS A TPPO VIDEO
"So when do i start to draw the background?"
"That's the neat part, you don't!"
i got pretty inspired, i should take more photographs irl and edit it and insert my character, luckily my dad has a big garden with grass and an apple tree, right now there are already apples growing, and when they turn a little red i should take some nice pictures of the tree when its sunny
that's nice! I regret not taking more photos myself. I was struggling so much trying to find decent photos for this video
the editing on this was so phenomenal like always. i loved seeing the video elements just dropping to the bottom of the screen and the little blurbs and AGH tppo you've done it again

the editor cooked hard
I think he does the editing himself
@@Justakatto that's great ngl, bro mastered every single skill
For CSP Users, we do actually have a posterize filter under edit > tonal correction > posterization.
My jaw dropped when you said ue5 cause I only used it for my game assignment and never thought to use it for art😂 great vid btww!
look into inio asano. Mujina into the deep has BGs completely made in unreal engine.

Although these are really beneficial but my inner self is exclaiming that the hand drawn backgrounds are the best ones.

I think you can do that stuff in Blender too, though like you said it takes more time to learn it. And with how quick you did it in unreal is awesome.
with blender you can also use the kuwahara filter in the compositing that makes cool painterly effect
Man we missed you so much!!!!!! Im so happy to see you again ♥♥♥
banger video as always bro the editing is getting better and better
