- With hundreds of indoor and outdoor dealers bringing everything for their only appearance of the year, Florida's West Palm Beach is an Extravaganza like no other!
We start outside, where our shopping includes the newest version of the seat that made me famous! Lots of beauty and a little learning hit us as we compare new pottery to old McCoy and Rookwood, Lucite furniture and a really cool English knight cabinet, plus great old art glass, 1930s barware and Geisha Girl tea settings.
Then we head indoors, where sparkling designer costume jewelry, amazing French and Austrian art glass, a Victorian tear catcher and a 1930s chalk figure with fabulous legs are featured in really fine and really fun reseller displays! A 1950s doll that changes moods at the turn of a button, 1970s MCM enamelware and fine European art that shows us the dawn of collecting!
West Palm Beach Antique Fest is this extravagant once a year, but there's a fun antique vintage fiesta there on the first weekend of the month year-round! Check wpbaf.com for more info until we're back in town next season!

Interesting story about the Madeira pattern. My grandmother worked for Franciscan in the mid - late 60s and they noticed the Medeira - which they thought would sell like hotcakes like the Desert Rose and Apple patterns - wasn't exactly the hit that they expected - considering it features the coleurs du jour - avocado green and chocoate brown. And then they did some research with it using a chef and serving meals on it. And they learned that certain foods look decidedly un-appetizing on it. One being fried eggs. Yuk. Granny used to buy family members sets of dishes from their seconds shop. She bought my mother service for 18 in Platinum Renaissance china - hand picking each piece. A family asked for a set of Madeira for her wedding and Granny talked her into Desert Rose. She sent us a sample Madeira and told Mom to serve eggs on it. It is just not a good look. Not sure exactly what years it was in the line but it didn't have the staying power of the two hot patterns. Color can make a big difference. In two other colors, that pattern could have been great.
That is such great info! I have thought a LOT over the years about the difference between dinnerware patterns and what would look good with food. Overly patterned designs can be problematic, and so much food is brown or earthy colors that it may not look so good on earthy colors. Just my thoughts...I like a good band of design around the edge and a plain center for actually serving food where dinnerware is concerned

The blue & white dish with the corks is a baby dish. Mama put hot tap water inside the bottom section to warm baby's food or keep it warm. I have my baby dish and my brother's as well (different dish from the 40's, not this pattern), a pink one and a blue one, each with a cork, and that is how our mother used them.

Those 60s bejeweled lamps are so cool 😎 I'm going to be on the look for those and I'm in my 30s and those are amazing never seen before but I need them now! Also I love the golden girls and have considered doing a golden girls room themed.

Good evening, George. I liked that Bohemian ewer, with the ram's head. That leaded glass window would make a fantastic door for a cabinet. The Mae West lamp I have has the adjustable type of harp like was on those Blenko lamps. Loved the Tiffany desk set. The Loetz piece was phenomenal! I really liked the dragonfly pattern in the metal. There was a gold/gold tone brooch there, with dark green sets, that I really liked. That Italian decanter made me think of Goofus Glass 😂 There was a lot of really nice and interesting items there. Thanks for the take-along!

Regarding the Russian box near the end, the writing you showed was "Troika". Usually the place of origin and style (Feodoskino, Palekh, Mystera, or Holui) is on the left, the title is in the middle, and the artist is on the right. I suspect that box is not completely hand painted because it doesn't have a place of origin and the border, which might be the only hand painted part, is very simple. The dealer probably knows the box is not high quality therefore the low price. Real Palekh and Feodoskino are worth a hundred dollars or more, Mystera and Holui a little less. The "painting" on that box suggests Mystera or Holui style. These newer boxes have appeared since the fall of state controlled manufacturing.

Pre-Spotify, I was in college and had listened to the top 100 songs on the radio in my dorm room ... the anticipation of waiting to hear if the #1 was my favorite ... and, yes, looking to see that my favorite was on the jukebox ... scrolling through the selections and then getting to hear "my songs' ... great memory!☺

My Mom had a set of the Franciscan Madeira stoneware....she got rid of it because they chipped so easily.
Thank you George for sharing your knowledge! The Eskimo doll with the baby you said was 2.95. Was that two dollars and 95 cents or two hundred and 95 dollars? I am in New Zealand and have a more modern one that my Grandmother had. Her family came from Canada and she bought her doll on a visit. If she was alive today she would be over 100 years old.

French: duly massacred. The celestial blue piece was stunning though. (the French had me wanting fingers in my ears. OUCH) 26:40 If anyone's wondering that was a real jelly belly - clear lucite cabochon. Some get crazy and say only Trifari is real or only pieces made during to just after WWII, but I'm not that much of a purist. Some dealers call colored or opaque lucite pieces get called jelly belly, but they're not.

Madeira Franciscan was our pattern and the glasses. They’re all packed up in our basement….as is the flatware that went with it. The glasses are so heavy and they get very greasy feeling if not used often.
