- One-stop vintage and antique hunting is a great surprise when we take a random stop off the freeway to wait out traffic near Atlanta, Georgia! The Marietta Antique Mall turns out to share space with Furkids Thrift Shop, a fun bargain shopping space we've never heard of before.
Which will have the best stuff, and which will have the most profitable buys? We start at the thrift shop, where industrious workers are stocking the shelves with fresh donations...a 1960s skunk collection hits the shelves for just moments before we scoop them all up, a stylish 1930s trophy vase appears for under $6, and a Victorian cranberry tumbler is an outrageous deal at just $1.95! We scour this place thoroughly as we hunt for vintage and antiques among the usual thrift store offerings, and have a great time with their enthusiastic young collectors on staff.
Then it's across the parking lot to Marietta Antique Mall, where the stock (and prices) are more high-tone. Will we find bargains to rival the thrifts? Pricing is relative to what you're getting, we spend more on a single lamp than we did in the whole thrift store...but a Silver Springs, Florida scenic lamp shade on cypress knee base is worth the extra! This mall proves quite worth our time, and we come out with good deals on better vintage goods.
So we're tied after two stores as to which antique and vintage shopping experience is "better". Can a Goodwill stop at the last minute turn the tide towards thrifting versus antiquing? We'll let you watch to the end of the video to see what style of store treated us the best during today's antique hunt!

Met the folks from Basketville last year at the Newfane Flea Market in Vermont, They came one weekend to blow out all there over stock and old baskets from storage, folks were walking away with as many baskets as they could carry. I figure that offering sales is a psychological merchandising ploy to get people to think they are getting a deal.
I think that most people realize the whole mark up to mark down mentality. Although the pull of a discounted booth does naturally draw people in, i think that people who are focused on buying realize when dealers are trying to "trick" them. I say price it at what you would like to get and if it doesn't move have some sort of a sale. Or try sale in a broader market.
If you have fair decent prices and are respectful of your customers they will keep coming back and at times rather give you an extra dollar or two because you have been fair with them.

I get wet eyed about the peace and pleasure this brings me...yes we need to make livings but it is all so much more than that...a balance of history, people you remember's styles, education and finding things one can collect..just all of it. Thank you George...I love that you like ceramics and glass...because that is so cool to me and learning more about all the furniture. A beloved woman from the family ranch days (70' and 80's and early 90's)..put her kids through school baking cakes. A second whole set of adopted kids. Love and support indescribable...I know she me mom..she went first...anyway she always had violet things...her house was a bunch of old oak antiques and neat things like the spoons in those old spooners for coffee all the time and other things for tha salad and condiments on an old lazy susan also always out and used..and then that to me horrible wood 70's furniture with bright florals..but everything so clean and a menagerie delight for a young girl to look... whole wall of baking cake things ... she I am sure had some of those violet things and those were her gifts too..she gave what she loved and pure love and support. Charlotte..aka Chuck and mom...we will not rush it but we will have a big tea/coffee up there...
My grandpa was a coffee salesman in the 20's..a traveling one in Colorado..I like seeing those things and wonder what kind....Zeno is smart..I love Alf...lol.

Ol lady and I were just laughing about the folks leaving the Flea market when Basketville was there, folks arms loaded with as many baskets as they could carry, we were commenting if they only had two more arms. Was a site to see, they were blowing stuff out at $5 and $10 a basket. ✌🏼💚
You must have gone to a fancy school! I think we are about the same age and we had old black manual typewriters to learn on in high school. When I got a job and they had a Selectric typewriter I was enchanted with it!!😉🙂

I sell in an antique mall and we price rather low so that we sell and flip faster. We have a March 20% sale to clear out as much as possible to reset for spring. We find that works well. Our mall is the Missouri Mouse Antiques in St. Paul, MN.
I do that in some of my locations too! That sounds like a fun place I should visit
I live in Switzerland, Europe and it is very interesting what you can find in American thrift, or antique stores! For me some things are incredible overpriced, on the other hand I can see things we don‘t have here. Every country has it‘s own design. Very nice to go through these shops with you talking about the things! Thanx!

I get the feeling that , a lot of the vendors are retired . And the booth is their hobby . Even if it just breaks even. You can tell the ages of the vendors by their taste. No video games here. No Masters of the Universe.
I find that the more I watch your ideas, the more connections my mind makes and it all eventually sort of gels. The stories about makers snd time periods help.

You know how the three most important things about selling a house is Location, Location and Location? Well, the three most important things to source antiques & collectibles from are Flea Markets , Flea Markets and Flea Markets . The big box thrifts have run dry (too many fingers on the pie) and Antique Malls are TOO AWARE of prices. Also the vendors have to pay MONTHLY RENT. Flea Markets are a willy nilly mix of everything - from every kind of dealer , junk man and house cleaner-outer . And many people that rent trucks to sell at flea markets DON't Wanna go Home with the stuff!
I'm in the Seattle-Tacoma area and most of our flea markets here are knock-off junk from China. It's very rare to find anyone dealing in actual vintage or antique stuff at a flea market here. Our thrift stores are actually pretty good
@@rainesbobo In the 1980s : our flea markets were "socks & underwear & knock off coach bags" . But the East Coast is BIG in flea markets that sell vintage treasure/junk . One flea market is better than 20 thrift stores.

@@rainesbobo If I only sourced at BIG BOX thrift stores - I'd be outta business in a year. I sell a LOT of paper ephemera like old menus , posters, tickets from concerts, personal hand written diaries and journals, etc. Thrift stores will throw all that stuff in the garbage when they do sorting. They cannot comprehend what it is and WHY would anyone buy a menu from an old restaurant ?

My favorite thing is I have a small collection of horse hair pottery it's so expensive I only have a few. I like it because each one is completely different and the one&only!!!!!

I love chalk ware and have a few unique pieces. I also appreciate the older,painted plates and bowls even if not marked. I have a style I go for. With European grandparents I appreciate the older pieces and love cranberry glass. Am always looking for willow ware pieces to add to my collection which I use daily. I would say if its not moving its to high. Anything will sell if priced right. I skip booths that have the same stuff year after year to point tags are faded. Good standard to go by is every few months turn the stuff. I know some will say slow dime better then fast nickle ,but rent will eat out that profit. Walmarts model of fast nickle has made them the most well off company.
I live in Florida and Goodwill has become intolerable in hunting for collectables. They pretty much scan for anything of value and sale it on-line. I'm learning to not waste my time and skip them.
I rarely go to the Goodwill in St. Pete/Clearwater anymore, but the independent thrift shops are good!
@@TheAntiqueNomad I live in Cape Coral and I will not set foot weekly for ,maybe once a month for the glassware. That seems like the only item they possibly miss.

I always veer into the booths with a sale of 25% or more. So a blanket discount I guess, If they have high end items, a sign saying unless firm, but don't have most marked firm, or have those in one area.
As a reseller I look in them, and it’s usually a 50/50 proposition but I’ve found some great buys
For some of us with booth space, it’s a hobby. Not a living!
That’s a nice place to be with it and I understand! It’s good for malls to have both kinds of dealers
At 34:25, that was a 60’s Iranian brass ice bucket! They are lined with removable lead inserts, and also the interior of the top has a lead shield, which protects the brass from corrosion and keeps things COLD. My parents brought theirs out for every social occasion. A bottle of champagne or wine on ice looked pretty elegant in it. Also, if used for ice for cocktails, it kept that ice solid for a long long time. I became the official family brass polisher at about nine years old, a chore I really enjoyed (and still do)! Iranian brass is the pinnacle of brass craftsmanship. I’m always on the lookout for brass that’s stamped ‘Nader’.
That is very interesting and now I have a new name to look for on brass! I have noticed the quality of Iranian brass can be very refined

I hope you asked for a 10% discount . Most antique stores in Georgia will give you a 10% if it is over $20 . I haven't been there lately and I want to visit the thrift shop ! I live in Pickens County , Georgia and we are the marble capital of Georgia . We have beautiful white marble and pink marble . There is a pink marble manison called the Tate House in Tate built by the late owner of the marble company . Built in the 1920's and is beautiful .
Canonsburg Pottery was in Southwestern PA.
I'm not sure about no lead in white glazes. The first time I heard about the danger was in an oil pigment called "lead white." I don't believe it is even sold anymore. Not sure, of course, how this may relate to glazes. I was tickled to hear you say GUNK for the first time I think. A devoted fan!!
That was clumsily stated by me! It's the absence of glaze on the white ware that makes it better
Lead White is still available as an oil paint material -- it's called "flake white" now. The idea is that , well, you're not gonna EAT the paint , and hopefully , you will wear gloves when you handle it . And if a small dab gets on your skin, it's probably not DEADLY . Also , you would not want a dog to chew the tube open either.

Actually I preferred the Furkids thrift shop, it had more interesting things, that were priced right. The Antique mall needs to lower the prices and quit trying to sell vintage as antique. If you are looking for the $$$ then continue the way they are but if you are looking to save the pieces then they need to sell for better prices. Granted they might be worth the cost but how many times does someone look at the same thing and put it back because of the price??? I do it quite often so I know others do as well, even you do. lol It is all about the price though. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us and you have a great day
Good evening, George! Some of those picture frames interested me. I get some at thrift stores, repaint them, (not old ones), and use them to put my Mae West sheet music in them. I have one more piece of sheet music to frame. I liked the Victoria Czech plate with the birds. I have an old card table made from the pressed cardboard. That cranberry Victorian tumbler was nice. That Furkids Thrift Store had some nice items. There was a taller vase, where the iridised smaller one was, that caught my eye. It had a gold upper part and handles on it. There was a red W. C. Fields statue there...a bit "unattractive" in red. I finally found a W. C. Fields lamp to pair with my Mae West one. Loved that Victorian shelf with all of the turnings. The corner Victorian shelf would've likely had to come home with me. Loved that one. The pair of Victorian seed tins really did interest me. I like that kind of thing. Putting a quartz movement in one of those old clocks is an abomination. It's like drilling on old kerosene lamp font to electrify it. Loved the portrait transfer vases.
As for running sales in the booths - the "Sale" signs do tend to draw in customers, whereas if the items were permanently marked down, the booth might not get as much attention.
The Furkids store and the antique mall looked really fun to shop...not so much the Goodwill. Thanks for the take-along!!!

I finally found that Mae West piece again for you, this just reminded me! Glad you finally matched W.C. Fields with Mae West in lamp form, they were a great pair in the movies. The thrift store wasn't bad, but I did enjoy some of the nicer things in the antique mall, I like those seed tins and the corner shelf a lot as well. I agree with you about Sale signs getting attention...for awhile...but left too long, they just make everything seem stale, malls would really do themselves a favor by not allowing perpetual sales.

I don't get into the tobacco tins, spice tins, etc. too much, but something like those seed tins catches my attention. An old fish food tin would be another tin that would interest me.
Yeah, if a "Sale" sign is perpetually left up, people will eventually begin to see it as a lie and avoid the space, especially if the items in the space have faded price tags and are collecting dust.
I love watching your videos. Your extensive experience helps with your knowledge base and I think your unique nomadic condition allows you to directly "take the temperature" of buyers in different areas of the country. I really enjoy watching and learning.

Fur Kids is one of my favorites- several locations in the Atlanta area.
I have a similar cypress knee lamp but my shade has a scene from cypress gardens. I live in Polk county, FL not far from cypress gardens (now legoland). I love it!
That Goodwill is about like mine, though I did find a Belleek heart shaped dish yesterday for $1.99. I expected their price to be $10….maybe that’s just how they price the broken things 🤣! It seems like every time I find a nice piece, they inflate the price even if it’s chipped or cracked. That’s why I was so surprised to find the Belleek (intact, too!).

I think both are good.Good permanent pricing is always a high to find. However on your pricier items the shopper might be more apt to buy an awesome piece if it is 25/30% off
I find that % Off brings me to a booth I may never shop cause prices are high .I have a small wall space in a local antique mall and I just periodically go in and mark items down that have been sitting. LOVE that mod cubist coffee table as well as the glass top table near the end of the video.

I think the black clock would have had a pendulum anyway - even though it is wind up. How else would you have been able to adjust and regulate the time? The key is changing the weight on the bottom of the pendulum,. I am not a fan of seeing old clocks with quartz movements. However, you do see a lot of cases these days with the movements missing or completely trashed. I do have a large collection of ladies' sterling pendant watches that I intend on putting quartz in one of these days. They are all Swiss cylinder watches - not really possible to repair. When women wore them and picked them up from their chest to read the time, commonly they let them fall and the cylinders broke like cheap glass. So I have just been collecting the cases and one day I will put quartz in them. The other reason people are putting quartz in is the cost of a decent clock cleaning/repair these days. Most clockmakers I know start at about 350 dollars and go up. Bushings are almost always oval and in need of replacement and the cost goes up and up. And running a dirty clock is just a recipe for disaster. The longer you run it with dirt and dried up oils and grease inside, the wider those ovals become in the bushings. Metal on metal just wears and wears. That is why buying that 35 dollar clock at the flea market and expecting it to run is almost never a good idea. Cleaning and oiling can increase that cost 10 fold. We never did it , but I suppose if someone had come to us with Grandma's clock in really terrible condition and asked for it to be replaced with quartz we probably would have. The funny thing is - the first quartz movements are just becoming Etsy vintage now. The technology only appeared in about 1980 - and it killed Bulova's wonderful Accutron almost immediately. Give me an Accutron over a fancy quartz watch any day.
It is true that some clocks cannot be saved, but that seemed like a choice. Swiss cylinder watches were really not easy to fix, and it's funny because nowadays everyone assumes the Swiss watches to be the best...it was not always so. My clockmakers are old school and a relative bargain, it makes no sense to put more than the value of the clock into things! Agreed about the Accutron

@@fishercourt I know they do on smalls. Not sure how that works with their furniture. I don’t go there often (I don’t go down to Marietta much anymore).
Animal rescue thrift stores always have better donated items.

Hi George. Your videos are fascinating and informative. I have a turkey platter which has been in my husband's family for a long time. He is 72 and it's been around as long as he can remember. It is white with a large blue turkey on the front with much decoration around the edges. It measures 17" x 22" and on the back it says Copeland, Spode, England. It looks like there's a maker's mark on the back as well. Nothing to read on it but it looks kind of like a crown.
Do you have any information on how much this might be worth? It's a beautiful platter.

I appreciate you mentioning lead in cups and dishes. Do you ever test your own antiques and are there any testing kits or methods you recommend?
You can order a testing kit. My main advice is make sure the clear overglaze is good (I avoid anything with crazing for food service) and lead free. A lot of the bright glazes are heavy in lead, but if they're sealed under a non-leaded clear glaze, it doesn't matter
Yes please to the stick and ball stand!!! I wonder if that top shelf can be un-warped. I’ve refinished (not painted!) some very nice pieces but I don’t know that the warp is repairable. George, would you buy that kind of thing anyway, condition being everything?
Warping is tough, you have to steam a piece and/or press it under considerable weight and it can be a lengthy process
Antique is much better, But it's much more expensive too. If I had two pieces worth ten thousand dollars Versus a thousand pieces worth ten thousand dollars. As a reseller I would need to turn the two pieces into a thousand pieces. Eventually the thousand pieces become the two pieces. But money is like water It has to continually flow.
Until you walk in a thrift store or antique mall, you just never know!

@32:25 I wondered the same..."How do they 'make' it?" in those booths. Do antique shops/malls also require a percentage of your sales in addition to stall rental, too? Talking to one shop I was told that as a vendor in their shop your items are not covered by their insurance so if your things suffer theft or breakage...that's on you. They also require a vendor to contribute a certain amount of hours running the store in rotation. All these things seem to render 'vendorship' problematic and unattractive.
I think they need to just price down the items😀

I’ve wondered how people make it as well. Do u think that maybe owner of store just gets a hefty percent of everything sold instead of a set rent amount? I am a retired hairdresser and I have worked paying booth rent by month or week. Also worked paying a certain percent of what I brought in each week. If you don’t sell anything, how can you pay anything 🤷🏼♀️
My friend rents a booth , pays rent and the store owner gets a percentage of all sales also. That is the way it is done in our area on sw Florida.
It is typically a percentage sale plus rent, but I think some people just pay the rent like it's storage. This mall was pretty good about not letting things be stale though
