His best and my favorite novel of his; still prefer his short stories....and I still like the Robert Redford, Mia Farrow movie version.

I like it when a book is both a wonderful reading experience as well as being a thing of beauty physically too. That one definitely looks like both. I had to order one for myself.

Michael, you are a tonic. You always brighten up this old woman's day. Thank you for making me smile. I would love to hear you review Brideshead Revisited. It is one of my favourite books and deals with some of the same issues of class. There are multiple themes and layers that I would love to hear your views on.

Wow - that edition looks nothing like mine! That is gorgeous! The artwork - especially the one of the car with the red shoes, and the one of the couple with the bottle of whiskey!

Its exquisite. This Beehive Books has some kind of taste in selecting works and a real flair with carrying out the finished project. After watching one of your previous vids featuring one of their books I checked out their website and ended up preordering, A Voyage To Arcturus by David Lindsey, illustrated by Jim Woodring, one of my 100 favorite books. After watching this video I'm almost drooling in anticipation.

What a great looking edition! Id like to do a compare & contrast video between _Gatsby_ and O'Hara's _Appointment in Samarra,_ sometime soon. Thanks. Michael.

Holy hell, that is SUPER Fancy Pants! Beautiful artwork. This is one of the few books I've read more than once. I think I already mentioned, I once saw a theatrical production of this called 'Gatz,' in which the narrator literally spoke every word of the novel as the performers acted it out. Following up on our discussion about audiobooks/adaptations... even though every word is spoken, we wouldn't count this as 'reading the book," right? Or would we?

I pre-ordered this too, specifically because Anna and Elena Balbusso did the artwork. Mine hasn't arrived yet, but glad to see it looks so great.

Michael, another wonderful video. As you know, I'm a massive Fitzgerald fan, I'm always amazed at how some people can't at least appreciate if not LOVE his work. This edition looks truly beautiful, I will have to see if I can acquire a copy as well.
I think many modern readers are too much of in a rush to appreciate the elegance of his prose. It's like a person who prefers to swill the beer down their throat versus one who prefers to savor a fine brandy.
As F. Scott once observed to his frenemy Hemingway, The Rich are different, and Hemmingway ( somewhat of a swiller himself), said Yes, they have more money. This is part of the divide, Fitzgerald clearly felt and wanted to be part not just of the 1% but real old money society that was limited to people born into that rarified ranks. Being Irish he was excluded- at least then- so he was always at the gate looking in. At the same time he knew it was futile and his characters show how contemptible that many of these people are. As you observed, at the same time this not a worthwhile goal, so this is part of his tragedy.

This was maybe the pleasantest reading surprise of my college daze. It was required reading. I was sure I was going to hate it. I put off reading it until the night before the exam. My plan was to just skim over it, just enough to pass the test. I started -- and I couldn't put it down! I read clean through it in a night. And I aced the test. Of course I just had a cheap paperback edition.

I loved the Great Gatsby I don't understand why people wouldn't like it...It is probably so highly rated that it is over rated!. I think a lot of books are over rated, but still great..F Scott Fitzgerald writes such beautiful prose, kind of a genius!

I love The Great Gatsby! The first time I read it I was absolutely stunned by it! It is a short novel but so well crafted it really packs a punch. I wonder why it should fall out of fashion? Its themes are pretty universal. How easy is it to read that edition? The art work is amazing and spot on!

Some how this book and its movie editions have escaped me. Wasn't made to read it in my own school career and I assume because my teacher assisting have been for non-academic classes it hasn't fallen in my lap.
Not even sure if I ever saw it in the depository. Will have to keep an eye open to the schools electronic library and sneak a read the next time the class is assigned 'Lord of the Flies' once again.

That is sure an awesome edition. Breathtaking. I feel like it is not a book to just read but to experience. It is a tabletop book that you only put out when you have guests that will be extra careful and leave no fingerprints in it but you do want them to look at it and envy you. I would seriously frame that picture.

I'm not a big fan of this book but I really like your review of it. It had a tragic ending that I wasn't expecting. That is what I didn't like about this book. The people's reaction to his death turned me off and left me with an unexpected bad taste on my mind. I read it only once, when I read it again I will probably like it a lot more now I know what to expect. That is a beautiful book by the way.

Thanks for the overview. I'm interested in the beehive books edition of "The Willows". Did you end up getting that one? It seems like the binding is paper over board, so can you speak to the quality of the paper and binding? The quality of the paper for the textblock? Typesetting? I'm assuming each of these editions are similar, so if your Gatsby is constructed a certain way, then I would assume the other books would be similar. Also, have you ever read The Iceman Cometh? I think it's also a very "American " tale, and the Limited Editions Club imprint is still affordable and comes with sole striking lithographs, I'd recommend you check it out. Enjoy your content!

It's a fashion to not like this book? I mean WHAT?! I agree criticizing Fitzgerald and whether or not he actually wrote this book or stole from his wife but as a book itself, it's a masterpiece. Also, I got lucky to get this edition too💃🏼

Read it in high-school and hated it then. I know my taste has evolved/matured since then, but I get the feeling I still wouldn’t care much for it. I just got Marquand’s “The Late George Apley” in hopes that I’ll like it, but it deals with society folks and the vanity of wealth as well and I’m almost afraid it may not live up to its Pulitzer (for my taste).

You are my favorite book tuber. Any one who has the courage to rank Edgar Rice Burroughs among his favorite authors is my kind of reader. ERB is a huge reason that in 1959 I learned to love reading. But as Sean Steadfast does, I too have a list of detestables-books that imo are overrated. The Great Gatsby would rank, for me, as the most overrated novel of all time. Summary of the story: "A bunch of bad things happens to a bunch of creepy people." But, it makes me happy that you, Michael, love the story. I am happy for you, lol.

I too will defend Fitzgerald's most famous work Michael - I've had the pleasure of teaching it to senior English students on several occasions here in Sydney, Australia. And wow, that Beehive edition is awesome; I see that their "Doctor Moreau" is illustrated by one of my favourite comics artists, Bill Sienkiewicz. Now for something......disturbing (cue Twilight Zone theme). I noticed that the clock behind you always shows 10 to 7: is it broken or is it the malign influence of dread Cthulhu, whose bust sits triumphantly atop the pile of books? They say he will rise from the ocean once more.....

    • @michaelk.vaughan8617
      @michaelk.vaughan8617  2 роки тому

It’s definitely the influence of Cthulhu. Also, the Beehive edition of Doctor Moreau is amazing. I did a video on it if you want to take a look.

I don{t know how or why but I didn't see this post until today. Let me begin by saying I love F.Scott Fitzgerald as a short story writer. I finally got around to reading Gatsby 15 to 20 years ago. My first impression was the book is good but over rated and is really a long short story or short novella.- But the real problem I had with it is that I didn't care much about the characters.
Gatsby is seen from the outside and is somewhat of a mystery to the others and perhaps even to himself. Daisy is unremarkable as a woman, lacks charm and has only her looks to recommend her. While I don't think you have to like the main character in a book, he or she has to be interesting and neither Daisy nor Gatsby really is. So we have one cardboard character in hot pursuit of another cardboard character. I think if the book had been a little longer and Fitzgerald had developed the main characters a bit more it would have been better. Alternatively. Fitzgerald could have compressed the story a bit and given it more focus. I have the same trouble with Hemingway's novels. Plot is good, style is good, pacing is good, but the characters simply don't interest me. BTW, the artwork in that edition is fantastic, but although I love art deco style, it really doesn't. for me at least. connect with the novel. It looks to me more like illustration for some German Expressionist work or a version of Metropolis. As always, congratulation on an excellent presentation.

I apparently have no taste. I read it for the first time last year and it did nothing for me. Just the very rich being the awful people that they almost always are. Meh.
