A few pages into reading this I came to the understanding I was in the presence of a bona fide genius writer!

Gatsby is indeed great. The book is complex, and gives more of itself with each reading, I think.
I’ve read many of Fitzgerald’s short stories, but no other novels. Must remedy.
So looking forward to the booktubers’ A Christmas Carol!

Great Gatsby is a great read, I reread it earlier in the year. You wonder why Gatsby is so obsessed with Daisy, she doesn't seem all that...

This was maybe the pleasantest reading surprise of my college daze. It was required reading. I was sure I was going to hate it. I put off reading it until the night before the exam. My plan was to just skim over it, just enough to pass the test. I started -- and I couldn't put it down! I read clean through it in a night. And I aced the test. Of course I just had a cheap paperback edition.

My opinion on Gatsby veers wildly with each rereading. There was a four month period in college where this might have been my favorite book, after I had disliked it on my first reading, but it dropped when I reread it several years ago and discussed it with students who had it on their reading list. We seem to have quite a few Tom Buchanans still running around. Hope you’re having a great weekend, Michael.
    Cheers, Jack

One of the few books I’ve read multiple times. Did I already tell you about the production “Gatz” that I saw years ago? It was a limited run production by the Elevator Repair Service in New York. Gatz is an office worker who find the book in a desk and starts reading it aloud, and as his co-workers come in, they start to enact what’s happening. It was word for word, and eight hours long. The last half hour or so, he just puts the book down and finishes it off from memory. It was pretty amazing.

Great video! I can understand why some people might not like The Great Gatsby, but personally I always thought it was a pretty good book. Gorgeously written, and even if the story is somewhat boring, it's brief enough that it never overstays its welcome. I always read the book as at least a partial allegory too. I think Daisy is meant to represent a physical embodiment of the American Dream. She's glamorous and alluring, but she's also shallow and fickle. And even though not everybody loved it, I thought the movie with Toby Maguire and Leonardo DiCaprio was an excellent adaptation. Really nailed the decadence and excess, I thought.

Excellent review! I’m with you and believe this deserves to be called a classic. The writing is beautiful and the topics remain current. I’ve read it from my 20’s till my 60’s and it holds up very well. Glittering and heartbreaking like Fitzgerald’s life.

Great, now I have to figure out where the heck I put my copy of Gatsby... I tried it a couple years ago and couldn't get into it, but that means absolutely nothing since I'm the world's biggest mood reader. Your review makes me want to give it another go. 😊

One of my favorites! I remember when I first read it I went in with low expectations due to Booktubers pooping on it, but I was pleasantly surprised. I LOVED it!! Really compelling story!

The essential list would be all his novels. There aren’t that many!

I've never understood why people love this book so much. I read it as a teenager than as an adult and I still don't get it.
