Stop having children if you can’t afford them, the only person putting them in poverty is the parent…..NOT THE TAX PAYER!!! Personally myself and my husband knew we would struggle 20 years ago with costs if we had children, so this struggle is nothing new. Shocker we choose not to have children, as we were responsible for that little human!!!

Problem is if people don't have kids society will collapse. That is why the government allow mass immigrantion to fill the gap. There should be a policy that every parent has the right to have 1 child supported through society. After that your on your own.
I think exactly like you though that you should not be selfish enough to bring another life into this world if you are incapable of looking after it until you die.
I personally never want kids regardless of how much wealth I make. They have no appeal to me at all. I'd rather have the time to do what I want. Work out, surfing, mountain biking, travelling.
Then in 30 years time if I need company I will have robots and A.I. I will have friends online and massive wealth to have fun with.

"The thought of having to decide whether or not to proceed with my pregnancy, based on the childcare element of universal credit is insulting" does that not just mean "Its insulting having to work out if I can afford to bring a third child into this world without the government paying for it" if you can't afford a third kid, then don't have a third kid...? Is there something I'm missing here?

of 9 adult cousins in my family...only two have had one child because they could afford it. No one else is having kids "because it's my right" frame of logic. A few of us in our 40's have given up hope because they never found themselves financially comfortable enough to have any. They couldn't even afford the childhood they had themselves, so they didn't make bad choices. Then we see these examples of blatant irresponsibility and I'm at a loss to explain this level of entitlement.

A slight correction here, it's not the government that are paying for other peoples children, it's tax payers. I have two grown up children, neither of them cost the tax payers a copper coin. We never claimed child benefit. I am an ordinary working class man and I cut my cloth to suit. I've never understood why people think it's OK to fund other peoples choices, I wasn't part of the conception so why should I be forced to pay for the children's upbringing.

Mother with American accent, young child with American accent, second child mentioned but not expounded on and a young baby. Not much info on the whole situation, other than the father has a chronic disability and cannot work. If that is the case then why choose to have another child? You'll know how much young children cost after having had two of them. Why is it "insulting" that you have to make a choice based on the amount of money you'll have? A tough decision, certainly, but it's not like it's a surprise to you that children are expensive. Maybe the father's chronic disability only reared its head after the baby was born, which is unfortunate, but this is surely why you build some savings before considering a third child?
I don't doubt that there are some unfortunate cases of people who the system has let down, but there seems to be a constant issue of news videos like this where no questions are asked about any of the background to the whole situation. Instead, it's just someone saying they need more cash for X, without asking why X came about or what they've done about it.
A "good job, the kind of job I expected to have after completing my education" could mean anything in my book! What job is it? Where do you live? Median rental cost in London (which is where this family seems to be, NOT mentioned in the report) is 53.6% of income, increasing to above 80% in the most expensive London boroughs, so 70% of salary going on rent indicates to me that you're either living in one of the expensive boroughs, or you aren't as well paid as you imply! Wouldn't hurt for news channels to ask some questions now and then.

To the rhetoric of “why should I pay for their kids?”…you should have an interest in normal working families being able to afford kids (regardless of how - preventing the rich and from skimming extortionate rents from working people is a better option) because those kids will eventually be paying for your retirement and old-age healthcare and they will therefore prevent economic collapse.

One obvious problem with the cap is that you could be happily working and married to someone else who is, decide rationally on the basis of your dual incomes that you can afford to have 3 kids, then get hit by chronic illness and/or the death of your spouse - suddenly you need the benefits system, but the benefits system you have paid into for years refuses to support that 3rd child. If you/your spouse can’t get a job and don’t have the savings then what do you do with the 3rd child? Are parents in this situation expected put the 3rd child into care? Or are they expected to partially-starve the whole family?
Also, this policy is very short-termist, a child who hasn’t enough food to eat will struggle to
concentrate in class, get worse grades, find it harder to get a steady job, and be more likely to end-up on benefits (costing the system far more as an adult than they would have as a child).

@@Someone-p2xeither the kid starves (which is thankfully illegal) or someone pays for them. if the parents do not have the means to raise the child themselves (either through work or benefits) then that child is likely to end-up in the care system. In this case not only are you still paying for their food and clothes, but you are also paying strangers hired by the state to provide the childcare that the parents would have provided if they'd been able to afford to keep their child. So not only does this not make sense ethically, it also does not make sense for the taxpayer. It is not even intended to make sense for the taxpayer if the child has already been born, it is intended to discourage parents from having that 3rd child. However, it will only discourage the parents if they are responsible financial planners in the first place and have not already had the 3rd child.

There is no excuse for these self centred people other than selfishness .

Some people having more than two children is balanced by the huge number of people who have none. Currently, the UK’s average number of births per female stands at 1.6
      The world average is 2.3

The attitude of society these days is disgusting women go out get pregnant and know taxpayers will clothe and feed the kids.

I’m actually relieved Labour have some sense not to abolish the cap.
If labour do as they promised, abolishing the cap won’t even be necessary as they aim to cut rents and build social housing.
But I do not want to see a return of the 90s benefits families. I remember very well the amount of money and support given to families which never even held down a job. Meanwhile I and my family all worked just to be taxed £300-450 a month.
Sometimes I just wish benefits didn’t exist at all. Just a £400 universal basic income that everyone gets under the 20-40% tax bracket.

As an aging population we need more kids for pragmatic reasons. As people live longer, the burden of care falls on the younger generations.

I used to agree how ever these kids will be future tax payers so if the government cannot support them now then why should they help this country in the future? Also they can waste millions on rwanda and track and trace yet can't afford to help feed the kids of the future seems wrong to me

We have worked full time, 13 hour shifts, all our married lives. We knew we could afford 2 children, and didnt want to have an only child. We had those 2, and they've wanted for nothing. We were right to stop there. Any more would have meant less new clothes, less days out and no holidays, (Childrens lives should be about MORE than just scraping together food, and the very basic necessities). People need to make responsible decisions. I do know people are suddenly taken ill or made redundant. Still, these unknown future issues should be factored into the family planning decisions. NO bad financial issues are aided by having huge families. 2 children is enough, especially in this economic climate.

You ve been well trained by the rich to swallow any bs restrictions they put on you,as the comments show.
Turning against your fellow citizens who were brave enough to undertake growing kids, and who if they didn't, you pensioners and other idiots wont have to eat.
It is the young who will pay for your old age pension,so the more the better.
But as i said, you ve already shown to be hateful towards people with kids, due to your ignorance.
An ignorance presented clearly in this comments section.

Pretty liberal on most things. I understand the arguments of people circumstance changing after they have had children but this lady is saying she won’t have anymore children. I mean if getting about £20 quid per child per week ( based on current rates) is the deciding factor I would suggest they you should not have anymore! As for the argument about paying pensions and falling birth rates a 2.1 child per women ratio is seen as the required amount to maintain population.

@@AtheistEve so the government is providing funding for 2 and people are having less. I am not sure that proving an extra 20 quid a week is going to increase the birth rate, this was the point I failed to make. Also id 20 quid a week the difference between a child being punished and not?

Child benefit is an allowance, people have truly negative connotation towards the word 'benefit' but not so much towards allowances... anyway, people scratching their eyes in comments how much they contribute from their taxes (yawn) when other countries like Germany are paying 250 per month per child...
When you cry next time about your taxes being used for kids free lunches, think of all your taxes that have been poured to Tories donors pockets via lucrative contracts.
