Follow me on on this multi-part series as I go bikepacking from Nanaimo to Penticton (in a very round about way).
This episode: I ride along the old Kamloops Highway (5A), past the Quilchena Ranch Hotel. Quilchena mean "where the willows grow." In 2013, Douglas Lake Cattle Company purchased the Quilchena rand lands, making the Douglas Lake Ranch the largest working cattle ranch in BC.
I cruise along the shores of Nicola lake, and past the old Nicola Court House. Ironically, this courthouse was designed by the same architect who built the Merritt Courthouse, and they almost look identical.
Merritt is known for its ranching, forestry and local copper mine. It's also the start of the BC Epic 1000 bikepacking race. I'll leave Merritt along the race route stopping where the Coldwater River Road crosses the Coquihalla Hwy. Unfortunately heavy rain is forecast for the next day, so I opted to sit tight and relax for a day as I'm in no rush.

My uncle (coincidentally a marshmallow farmer by trade) always told me to carry a metal spork, rather than plastic, when bikepacking! Sound advice that I will pass onto my kids someday. Thanks for the promo Salty! Great video, as always.

You’ve very welcome. I thought this would be the best format given how I shot the trip. I hope future big trips will be similar, but with more thematic storytelling mixed in. Hope I’m getting better along the way.

Thank you very much. This trip was full of lessons learned. Most of what not to do. I had not really formulated a story to tell, I just documented things and over these last 10 episodes have been challenged to make them interesting. I liked how other bikepacking you tubers made videos for each day. I watched one that was 1000+ kilometres and only 3:00 and I knew where they cycled. While the edit it was shot and edited well, I could only think how much more there would have been to show. I would like to get more cinematic, but still retain that “come along for a ride” feeling. I’m glad you’re enjoying the channel. Suggestions & criticism is always welcome.

Not everything has to be amazing all the time. I've watched youtubers like that as well, I'd wake up every morning ready for an episode with my coffee. And prefer the longer vids that show most of the day compared to a music flyby that covers a 1000kms. I'll be waiting for the next one ✌

The broken plastic spork is why I switched to a titanium one. That looked like a Light My Fire spork. They make a titanium version. I've had mine for years now and it has yet to let me down.

How do you lock up your bike for Nutella restock points?
I carry enough Nutella for the entire trip.... LOL. Seriously, I have a 30” OTTOLOCK rolled up tight at the bottom of one of my handlebar feed bags under the water bottle. When I do stop, I grab all electronics and pop them in pockets. I hide my small sheathed knife, and I walk my bear spray directly to customer service and explain that I am on a cycling trip in the wilderness and carry bear spray, and do not think it wise to leave it on my bike locked outside where the public has access. I have never had an issue with any store willing to just quietly put in a drawer while I shop.
So when would be a good time to start my bikepacking trip in b.c?
I was thinking of starting in May next month.
I really depends on where you want to ride, and the local weather. This spring the entire province is seeing some very high levels of snowpack, and later than normal spring warming trends. This will do two things.... late access, and great risk of flooding in other areas when the weather does shift. But that said, it all depends on where you wanted to ride. Low valleys will be okay, but some logging road passes may not even be open, or have been plowed during the winter. Did you have an area in mind?
B.c trail from fernie to Chilliwack
If you're thinking of doing that entire ride as mapped in Mid to end of May, I think you're going to hit snow in numerous places. Grey Pass usually opens mid June, just prior to the BC Epic 1000. It's just over 2000meters! The rail trail up to Bulldog Tunnel is all on the north slope as it gain elevation and snow can still lurk in there pretty late, along with many of the slot canyons. Then entire Myra Canyon area above Kelowna sits at 1250m, and usually holds snow until late May. June is still heavy snow melt, and water will also be an issue... as long as you're aware of that. Many sections of the trail floods in places such as Brookmere to Tulameen (there is a good sized creek to cross), and north of chute lake is notorious for early season water (long stretches up to 3ft deep). With that, don't be surprised by rockfall & washout. Last summer there was some detours on the section from Brookemere to Hope. I didn't ride it that last year, but people I know had to do some backtracking. It's a great ride, but Mid-May to Mid-June it's going to really tough.
Check on the BC Epic 1000 Facebook page for pre-race conditions - that might give you and idea of how things are opening up - or contact Lennard Pretorius via the website. Lennard can also give you some ideas around the Kamloops area, depending on how the snow is melting.
