    Just seeing the words “Don’t forget me now, you hear?” made me choke up. I had a grandmother suffering from dementia at the time I played this game, and that story really hit home. It perfectly depicted how she seemed to have constructed an ideal world in her head in which she was a teenager again while everyone she had loved throughout her life was alive and well.

      Grandma had Alzheimer's and she never forgot me, BUT the dementia was horrible. She could not dress herself, she couldn't walk, she was too afraid of the TV if we so much as showed her The Andy Griffith show. If a disease could ever be evil, it would be Alzheimer's.

    dude the facial animations in this game are so good. that part with kaim and lirum is intensely moving, even though i barely know any of the characters, and it's all thanks to how incredibly well the expressions portray his emotions. A+

    • @Majuular
      @Majuular  Рік тому +42

      For sure, I think keyframing those animations manually was the right move. Motion capture wasn't *quite* there yet... or possibly at all. Having these handmade expressions really adds a depth to the interactions.

      @@Majuular I'm reminded of Takayoshi Sato-san, who did the cutscenes for Silent Hill and Silent Hill 2. He would sleep under his desk in order to get the work done and his dedication really shows in the final product. "See? I'm real." Very nice to se you cover this gem of a game. If it were marketed as a Final Fantasy title, it would have gotten so much more attention and love at the cost of it's creative independence. The 1000 Years of Dreams is one of the biggest achievements in writing you could ever ask for in a video game, on top of the particular segments in Nier.
    To an extent, I wish we allowed VAs to adlib more with their characters. With English being the "official" release, it makes a character like Jensen stand out that much more because he's real. He's not written to be goofy or annoying, he just is. He isn't written to be lovestruck or to have his own less-than-pure goals, he just does. They trusted the talent and the talent trusted the story.
    The biggest crime in all of this is that it can't even be emulated that well. The only option you have is to play it on OG hardware with the discs. It may seem like a high barrier but given how expensive some games are and upgrading PC rigs can be... just spend $200 needed to be able to play it and bam, you can also go back and play through other older games too. Like Blue Dragon, even if it is a bit more of a game-ass game.

    I remember playing this back at launch. This is one of many RPGs that deserve a remake.
    In regards to the 1000 Year of Dreams, even when I was younger I remember enjoying them. One of them I always remember whenever thinking about them. The story of the town festival, where Kaim is approached by a villager asking why he doesn't celebrate with them. He begins to explain how the festival they know today was originally started after a natural disaster from 200 years earlier and it was originally a memorial day.
    It's the sort of short story you could only experience in the eyes of an immortal being. How events can not only shape a culture, but change as the culture shifts.

      Yeah, my dad died about a year before this came out. And yeah Seth seeing Sed's final moments triggered me really hard when I played it back then. Like I remember my childhood friend and I playing it, we got to that point, and I started crying hysterically after seeing it.
      But now I've recovered from all the losses I endured when this came out, and am ready to play it all the way through again. Was able to score a copy at a convention a few years back. Still have it.

    Having played Lost Odyssey when i was young, a lot of the complex subtleties of its expertly weaved context flew over my head like a dog looking for a ball that you never threw. With age I have endured loss that cut me deeper than any sword and having listened to your graceful retelling of this forgotten story stirred up such emotions in me that I was forced to weep uncontrollably for a better part of your video. I think the line that made me stop what I was doing, letting out a trembling "W-what..?" while listening to you speak was when you recapped the first of the stories from the 1000 years of dreams, Hanna's Departure. "... Kaim has seen death so many times that he intuitively understands how long the dying have left and how to ease their pain." My mother passed very recently from a painful withering disease and I was not there when she finally passed. I wish with everything I have that I could have been there and had known what to say to help ease her pain even a little bit. Thank you for helping me deal with some of those suppressed emotions I had been carrying.

    There’s really this untold story about why Kaim never considered marrying another Immortal earlier to solve the “outliving your spouse” situation, and how and when he met Sarah. Because from what little hints there are, it seems Sarah was originally like Gongora, going fully into her magic research to the point she never built many relationships, mortal or immortal. She calls Kaim “the only man she ever loved”, which implies that. And unless she had held a torch for Kaim ever since they crossed over together, she only fell in love with him in the maybe 50-100 years when they finally actually met again in Tosca. Like for Kaim, hinting it off with her is great because it kinda solves the issue where he outlived all his previous spouses, even if his kids with Sarah would ultimately still die before them. It really hurts that Sarah as ZERO Dream stories, iirc, because we never get insight either to her original personality, or her current one regarding her relationship with Kaim. What she read in her own journals thoroughly convinced her to stick with Kaim and that she and he love each other, even if really he’s a stranger to her since her amnesia never got cured even by the epilogue.
