DRUM LESSON: Muse - Assassin DRUM FILL / The Bonham Triplet

- NEW LESSON/COVER EVERY WEEK!
Based on your requests, today we'll break down the massive sextuplet drum fill being played by Dominic in Muse's song 'Assassin'. The fill is a variation of what is commonly referred to as the "Bonham Triplet". If you ever hear that phrase, now you'll know what it is! It would also fall under the category of Sextuplet Drum Fills (Sixteenth Note Triplet).
So this lesson is all about breaking it down, learning the sticking pattern and then build it up from there. It's a process, both getting it up and speed and getting the orchestration right, but once you've got it down and can apply your own creativity to it the options are pretty much limitless. The Bonham Triplet is more commonly played as left hand lead; L-R-K, while in this lesson the focus is on the right hand lead version; R-L-K.

I'm demonstrating the exercises in various tempos, but I do not expect nor want you to jump form 60 to 90 to 120. That's way too extreme. Take it in small increments of maybe 2-4 BPM at a time, and work on the new tempo for a long time before moving on. Don't rush it! Allow your body and mind to really get comfortable with the pattern.
Alright - that's it for this lesson!

By far most helpful breakdown
Awesome to hear! That's fantastic!
I've been doing this fill unknowingly for the last 2 years, never even knew it lol
Haha, that's awesome! It's a fantastic one!
Hello, friends.
I'm currently out of town so I apologize for this lesson not being out until now, a couple of days later than usual!
Hope you all get something out of this one :)
Love how gradual and didactic this lesson was! Thanks, Max!
That's just great, what a nice compliment! Thanks, Rafael. And you're welcome!
Great lesson. That was actually my start into bonham triplets :D
haha, awesome! And you're welcome, and thanks!
Wow man! Awesome lesson! I gotta work on complicated fills like these. Hope you come out with more of these intermediate/advanced fill lessons!
There will definitely be more in the future! Thanks for the kind words. The speed makes it complicated for sure, even though the pattern is simple!
This channel NEEDS more views
Haha, thank you very much! I seriously appreciate that. :)
One of my favorite ways to sound like I shred super fast haha. I remember how long it took me to learn but it's so worth it! Well done explanation
Thanks, Lucas! Appreciate it. And yes indeed - this one and variations of it can be so awesome for that purpose, haha.
Excellent lesson. Over the Mountain reborn !
Thanks, Max! You are a great teacher. Love that triplet. 👍🏻
That's such a fantastic compliment, Mike. Thank you. And yes - it's awesome!
You're a great teacher....God bless you
That means SO much! Thank you!
Thank you so much for making this man! Helped me notice it's not LRK but RLK. I'll definitely be practicing this so I can finally learn this fill.
That's awesome, Drew. I would guess Dominic plays L-R-K considering he's on a lefty-kit, hehe :) Both sticking patterns are extremely useful, especially if you mix them! But yes - for this song R-L-K will work better!
Been practicing it on the bus, can't wait to have my first drumkit! Thanks for the awesome lessons and covers, Max!
Hey that's fantastic! Any plans for one? You're very welcome - glad to hear you're making use of things!
I think I'll have to start with a cheaper electronic kit, do you think I'll have problems to learn in these conditions?
Hi Maximiliam, I love all of your cover videos and lessons as well. I also realized that you encourage some Turkish drummer to keep drumming on their videos by commenting. Such a nice behavior. I am a guy who decided to quit his job and going after what I really want. Yeah man I did that when I was 32 and trying my best for being the best I can be on drums. Hugs and love from Turkey İzmir ;) Thanks
I love encouraging all kinds of drummers around here. We're in it together and we're all a big family, hehe. Awesome to hear you haven't given up on chasing down your dreams. Work hard buddy!
wowww very nice dude... i have work to this weekend jejeje go ahead and thanks a lot for this lessons
Let me know how it goes, Ricardo! You're welcome!
Very cool. The RLK is awesome. Been practicing it for months now.
That's great to hear, Jim. It's a fantastic little pattern for sure.

That's absolutely fantastic to hear!
Super útil man. Great tutorial
Thank you!
You're my new favourite drum teacher.
WOW. That's quite the insane compliment. I'm honored.
Haha no worries man. Your explanations are easy to understand and not draggy. And you breakdown the parts nicely for us.
very well taught, thank you..
Glad you think so, Smith. Thank you!
Thank you Man , you play so good :D
I appreciate that, Nicolas! Thank you and you're welcome!

You're very welcome! Glad it's appreciated!
this saved me,thank you :)
Haha, you're very welcome! :) Glad it helped!
Bro I've been stuck on this fill for AGES trying to do it with just a jumping triplet from snare-rack-snare-floor-snare-rack-floor-flam snare but I couldn't get it fast enough! This helps SO MUCH!
That's another cool variation for sure! Glad this helped you out though buddy, that's awesome!
Great video really helped dude
Thanks, Toby! Glad to hear that. You're very welcome!
Yeah that's ok I can actually play most of
This song
Great breakdown and helpful tutorial! However you did forget that he is playing the hit hat on the left foot as well which gives it a bit more oomph haha. Thanks for the lesson!
thank u for the free lessons
You're very welcome, Anthony!
+Maximiliam Andersson thanks to u I made kids go crazy at my school talent show
Hahaha that is absolutely fantastic buddy! So glad to hear that!
Great tutorial mate! Thank you. I used to think there was some sort of double pedal in that fill. 😆 for me it is easier to do left-right-kick. The only thing is that I end up hitting Tom 2 and then the floor Tom. Very helpful.. 🙌🏼👍
I would greatly suggest you practice both! Being comfortable with both L-R-K, and R-L-K. It's such a useful voicing, you wouldn't want to limit yourself to only using one!
Bonham himself always played it lrk
Great vídeo, very helpful. Thanks from a beginner drummer!
Subscripted right now 😎👍
Hey thanks a lot! And you're very welcome!
Ay very helpful :)
Merci 🙏🙏🙏
Nice Sir😉
Hey thanks, Shek!
Man! I just saw this video in my UA-cam recommended page, and I've just subscribed! I love how you teach, I love your skills, and also that drum kit you have! it would be awesome to see you covering avenged sevenfold's nightmare! please do it soon! thank you!
Whoa, now that's an absolutely fantastic compliment. Thank you so much! I'll check it out once I get back to LA!
Maximiliam Andersson you're welcome man! I'll be very pleased if you do Nightmare! cause I'm sure you can do it! you're awesome!
Thank U so much! :)
You're welcome, and thank YOU!
Love your tom tones. Do you tune to a specific note or just until you feel like you get the right sound?
Hey thanks buddy! I just tune them to whatever fit the current purpose - always re-tuning them each time I go record :) Personally I'm not sure I was so happy with the tone here to be honest, but glad you liked it haha!
Fantastic!!! You are a fenomenal drum teacher!!! Do you think that the final fill on the snare in a HERTA RUDIMENT? Thank you in advance
Ahh, thank you very much for the kind words! Appreciate it!
And yes indeed, the last fill is indeed a bunch of hertas! Except from the final 2 snare hits, tom hits, and kick, of course.
@@maxadrums thank you very much!
Thank you Max! Would it be possible to also break down the fill in Lost Prophets "Shinobi Vs Dragon Ninja" please? I think it's quite similar. Thanks.
You're very right, it's very similar! But it's using double kicks instead. Check this out:
goo.gl/kUZZJC
The only difference is the very last beat there, rather than 1x 16th note and 2x 32nd notes leading into the last flam, he actually plays them as 3x 16th-note triplets.
Maximiliam Andersson Wow that is so nice of you. Thanks again.
You're very welcome!
Sei proprio bello
What mic source are you using to get the hand and foot/your voice? Is that the internal camera mic?
It's some cheap clip-on microphone off Amazon, still reduces the static compared to the internal!
yea it gets your voice/claps/foot stomps really well
Hi Max! I really get influenced from you every time i watch. Can you make a video about the Texas Band called " White Denim " and his drumelicious track " Back at The Farm". Thank you !
DUDE! That is so awesome to hear. I'll have to check that one out!
