  • NEW LESSON/COVER EVERY WEEK!
    In today's lesson we'll be working on some left foot independence. We'll mainly be playing either quarter or eighth notes, but placing them on all the different divisions of the sixteenth notes. Downbeats, Upbeats, E's and A's. Towards the end I'll show you a rhythm and concept that gets a bit more advanced. This lesson can be difficult if you're not used to involving your left foot in your playing, and have mainly been using it just to open the hi-hat. Take your time with each exercise looping it over and over and over, at a slow tempo, and make sure you get comfortable with it. Find the balance in your body! No swaying to change the anchor of your weight!
    Downloadable PDF:

    There are a few different issues we can come across here. First of all, it can be difficult to place the hi-hat on any other subdivision than the downbeats, mainly because we might not be used to doing so. So first we have to figure out the pattern. By breaking it down and really understanding which limb/limbs play together with the left foot, you can make this a lot easier. The PDF should help you with that! The second issue tends to be the balance issue because of two reasons; we're not used to the pattern, and our center of balance isn't where it should. Find the right balance. The third problem could be the speed itself. Playing eighth-notes on the hi-hat is something that doesn't require crazy speed - but it is a faster subdivision than many are used to playing with the left foot.
    Alright - that's it for this lesson!

    Great lesson Max! Since you already got me working on my right foot independence I think it's a good time for me to also switch over to the left foot during my practice session.. as for the groupings and whatnot that you talked about at the end.. Will still keep that for our live lessons so that I don't stumble and fall over! ha! Again.. great lesson Happy to share this with other drummer friends on Facebook :)

      It's definitely a nice thing to add in - some different patterns for our left foot that all can act as anchors to our time. :) Thank you, Jarah.

    I cant even left my left foot without putting some effort. Seems like my muscles are not developed yet like my right foot.
    You have any suggesstion for building muscle strength? Its impossible to use bass and hihat for me.

    • @maxadrums
      @maxadrums  6 років тому +1

      Absolutely! A great way of working out some strength is by sitting normally with your feet flat, and then keeping your heels on the floor while lifting the toes towards your shins. Basically pretending you've got a MASSIVE pedal, hehe. This will work out the chins.
      Then I'd suggest working out the calves, by just standing up with feet flat, then move up on your toes as much as you can. Basically lifting your heels repeatedly.
      This will definitely give you some strength!
