DRUM LESSON: Travis Barker Tom Groove (Not Now by blink-182)

- In this lesson we'll be breaking down what is one of my favorite Travis Barker grooves; the intro/bridge groove from blink's song 'Not Now'. This groove definitely have some coordination challenges together with the fast tempo making it tricky to execute. We'll build it up slowly, starting with just the right hand and the right foot, adding more to it as we go through the exercises in the PDF.

I mention in the video that the tempo of the song is 216bpm, but the correct tempo is 212bpm. It was a long day of recording and as I went from half tempo (106bpm) back to the original, my math failed me and came up with 2016, haha. Either way - it's always positive to be able to play your grooves and songs a little bit faster than what you'd be performing, so you're not performing at your very limit. That way you can be a little bit more relaxed, as well as knowing that you won't crash even if you happen speed up slightly.
Alright guys, hope you got something out of this! If you have any other favorite Travis Barker grooves or Tom-Based grooves, let me know below!

Amazing lesson!!! We want more travis barker´s lessons!!!
Hey, thanks! If you say so, sure, there can be more!
+Maximiliam Andersson Yeah! I love your work man. I suggest you to do a "155" drum lesson. There are no drum lesson of this song on the internet and I think is a cool beat that probably many of us can´t play by ear. Keep it up :)
Oh man, 155, Lillian and Weatherman are all incredibly fantastic grooves.
What an incredibly inventive way to explain such a groove
what shampoo do you use bro?
it's Pantene bro, I also using it and my hair straight and shiny like thor.

Rafael, I appreciate that so incredibly much. Thank you.
First time in my life I got a drum lesson just after watching it once. It was a very nice tutorial...
DUDE! That's such an amazing compliment. So glad it helped you out, and that it was clear and all!
Just saw the cover and was gonna ask for a lesson and behold, my question was answered a year ago. Awesome lesson.
Haha, that's awesome! Glad it helped out.
This is absolutely epic 👌 travis barker Grooves are just the best and the most fun I have only recently discovered your channel sorry I’m late to the party haha.
Awesome lesson!
Thank you, Lucas! Glad you think so.
Travis is a genius. Simple as that.
just found out about this video. its pretty cool. the layout of the lesson (slowly building) is awesome. i slow it down and it feels like an intro to a rock concert. (one note and putting stuff on top of it). so this can actually be used like that!
Haha, intro to a rock concert, you're right! Would be quite cool!
Thank for this lesson absolutely love this groove
One word: Amazing!!
Francesco, thank you so much!
I watched this video 4 years ago, and in those years I barely touched any drums. But now I just got my e-drums and in less than 10 mins I got it. Thank you so much for this sick beat🙌 it means a lot to me ngl
How awesome is that! And I'm stoked for you!!
We want more travis barker´s lessons!!!
This is just awesome! I love how you slowly build it up... Makes the learning process way easier... :)
That's great, Jarah! So glad to hear from many of you guys that the layout works nicely!
That's cool , very very good and inspiring.
Glad you think so, times three! Thank you!
Sweet, I'm going to have to try it out!
Awesome! Let me know how it goes!
+Jacob Eaves - Drums I will have a crack at it, make sure you credit Max for his fine work, as I know you do.
Another awesome lesson brother!
Thank you, my friend!
love the way you show the beat. step by step, really easy to follow!
Super appreciate the kind words and I'm glad it works well!
This is great, I learn songs on drums through drum covers on UA-cam. This was surprisingly harder than I thought and it was nice to actually learn it.
Great video 👌👌👌👌
Thanks a bunch, Bruce! :)

Hey thanks Serax!
Your a machine Max, just love your work, fantastic groove.
I hope I don't sound too much like a machine though :-) Thank you, Steve.
+Maximiliam Andersson Sorry it came out wrong Max, I meant the amount of videos you churn out every month, love your work man.
Steve! In no way did it come off in that way, I was just being fun, hence the smiley! Hard to understand the tone of my response through text, so I apologize for that. I did in no way get offended, and I understood the intention behind what you said. So again, I apologize for making you feel bad.
Great lessons brother. Keep them coming, they are much appreciated.
Thank you, Scott. There will definitely be more.
Awesome as always! I actually like that 106bpm groove 😀
Haha, it's definitely cool at all tempos for sure! Thank you.
Well made, easy to understand ! Great
Thank you so much, Vince! Appreciate that!
Appreciate you taking the time to make videos like this one. Right on 💯
Awesome lesson! Thanks Max !
Thanks right back at you, Giorgi!
Nice breakdown. You made it really nice to follow. Thank you.
That's sick man, I could never break it down that well, I'd kill for you to do the when I was young bridge part, blink obviously
I'm glad you appreciate it - and thanks for the kind words! That's definitely a killer bridge. Perhaps I'll do so in the future!
Awesome lesson. For some reason I can't play it at 106 but as I speed it becomes easier.
Sometimes it's 'easier' to play faster - but being able to play things slow let's you know that you're actually in control. Generally when we only can play things fast, there are some sloppy things going on in there that's just harder to hear because of notes moving faster :)
Thank's so much man! Will deff be covering song now!
That's awesome! Let me know how it goes!
the best teacher in the fucking world greetings from Argentina🤘🤘🤘
Holy heck! I really appreciate the insanely kind words!
Awesome job Max, keep it up, cheers!
Hey - glad you think so! Thanks, I will!
Perfect explanation!!
Robbin, thanks man. Awesome to hear you think so!

nice man!
Glad you think so buddy! Thanks!
Awesome tutorial! I can now play this bc of you - thank you!! Just can’t figure out the drum part in the “please stay, until I’m gone...” part. Can you show that too please? Awesome vid!
Thanks a lot! Ah, that part is interesting.. There are many ways of playing it, but I don't have it transcribed! I'd suggest slowing down covers or live performances on youtube!
@@maxadrums lol yeah I’ve done that. I’m trying to do it with doubles - I may just not be fast and smooth enough yet. Are u doing doubles?
For the fast section of it - yes! Doubles :) But it works either way, doubles or not. Just a tad smoother with doubles, and makes more sense.
@@maxadrums awesome, thnx so much. Love ur videos and thnx for the tip - keep it up!
Fantastic! ;)
Thanks buddy! Glad you appreciated it.

Александр Королев
use an app to slow it down and you can separate the different parts
Nice video and hair.
Thank you! Cheers!
Great Lesson Bro... really enjoying all your videos very cool stuff man wish you all the best!!! not usually one to ask for requests but would love to see you do one of the new Angels and Airwaves songs off chasing shadows! such a great EP if you haven't already been thrashing it (o:
Thanks, Simon!
I have checked it out indeed - and it's got a couple of sweet tracks for sure! Overload and Chasing Shadows are the personal favorites off that one. It's possible I'll be covering them! Last time when they released TDW I was the first one to cover the single Paralyzed, not as on top of it this time, hehe. We'll see, maybe! There are so many songs off WDNTW that I'd love to cover as well.
yeah man The War would be killer to!!! Chasing shadows in my fav of the ep just great hooks and song writing.. anyways man looking forward to seeing some more of your stuff (o:
You rock, Simon. Thank you!
🎉🎉🎉
Keet i up
For sure!
Would have helped if you had a metronome indicating one, but otherwise good lesson.
Not a bad idea!
Is this a bad first song to learn ?
It's definitely a tricky one for a beginner!
whatttt! :D
Huh!
Amazing Lesson but the transcription link doesnt work??
Hello, Jarrod! Should be working now!
x2 sounds like actual song
Haha, yup! That's a great sign :)
thanks dude :D.
like and sub
Anytime! Thanks!
Goddamnit I can cover mars volta songs but I cant get that fking offbeat when played to track speed! OMG
Different skills, buddy! Just keep at it!
i think you need a new rack tom head lol
Why - what's up? Do you think it sounds bad?
No its sounds dope but i thought i saw pits in the head? Anyways great lesson though
I can see where you're coming from! My personal belief is that as long as the sound works, whatever you're using works. Fur durability reasons and visuals, switching them out would make sense. I was very happy with sound and sustain though - so switching them out might have caused a longer sustain, etc! The snare head should soon be switched though :)
Thanks, Riley!
her hair is better than my girlfriend's
Wait, her who? HAHA
