Not sure you have any idea how valuable this information is for us as consumers. We trust your opinion and your knowledge so for you to evaluate and compare these 2 products for us we know what to buy when. They both sound like great products for certain projects. Thank you for doing this video. I really appreciate it.
Not sure if this was mentioned anywhere. But Caron and Bernat are made by the same company (Spinrite), they also make the Patons, Lily and Phentex yarn. :-) So they are bound to have similar styles of yarn in each line. :-)
Thank you Jayda for teaching me about other crochet things important to consider. I'm still learning crochet and find your video presentations clear, knowledgeable, and understandable which is very helpful to a visual learner like myself. X
I think they appear the same, looking at the strand, but the Pop is much denser and winds up having much less drape and works up looking much thicker. I think going up a hook size for the Pop is advisable in order to have a good drape. Also, the strand itself looks nicer in the Cakes vs the Pop (which I think look kinda "cheap"). I have no doubt that it is the wool that makes this difference.
Lots of people seem to be using these yarns. Haven't noticed if they are available in Europe. I don't normally use yarns with so much acrylic content but might be nice to try them once!
Thank you SO much for clarifying the difference between variegated and self-stripping yarns. I had no idea what an awesome affect can be achieved with self-stripping yarn. It really looks like it's been crocheted with several different colors of yarn! Your video is fantastic and now I can't wait to grab some of this yarn and make something gorgeous :)
crystal morrison hi. I did wash n tumble dry CARON cakes the hats came out fine. They were a charity gift n I wanted to make sure washing wouldn't be anything extra.
Wendelyn Young I made the corner to corner baby blanket and it did shrink a bit and lost the shape I had to re wash it by hand and lay it out and block it to save it. You can wash it but I wouldnt recommend it just from my experience, you can but I guess the project and maybe my washer setting are just up to hi or something
Thank you Jayda! This is a very useful video for anyone wondering about the differences in each yarn. Always enjoy your tutorials, you make it very easy to follow along.x
Thank you for this very informational video. I bought two cakes of Caron Cakes on sale at Michael's here in the states last year for about $5.99 each. I had no specific purpose for it other than I was curious about it. I made a small hat, and a matching cowl out of one for a gift (and still have leftovers). After seeing your pretty crocheted shawl, I'm thinking I may use the other one for that. I haven't yet tried the Bernat Pop.
Thank you! As a beginner knitter I have so many questions about EVERYTHING! The information about something as basic as the positives and negatives of different yarns is invaluable. I'm already beginning to become something of a hoarder! I see colors or textures I love and buy it to "use in a project later". :) Now I'll have a better idea of what I should be looking for in the huge "cakes" of yarn. Great, clear explanation!
Thanks for sharing Jayda. I recently bought some of the Lion Brand Mandala yarn, another self striping yarn. My Walmart had it for $4 (instead of $9.99 retail) and it quickly sold out. It's size 3, 100% acrylic and 150 gram skein. The colors are beautiful in those as well.
Hi Becky! WOW what a lucky find!! We can't get Mandala yarn here in Canada yet * sigh *. We even contacted them to see if they were planning on selling it up here and they said "yes" but no set delivery date yet. I'm hoping that Canadian Walmarts will start carrying it soon!
Becky G I also bought Mandala yarn. I couldn’t resist the beautiful colors! It is a bit harder to use, though, being a 3 weight, but the results are worth it!
I have that, too, as well as Bernat Pop. I got them for my 12th birthday from my friend. I'm planning on using Bernat for a big blanket for my grandma's friend with Parkinsons (I'm hoping it'll make her happy!), and Mandala for a different project for the same woman.
Wow! I've just learned a lot from you! This is wonderful the way that you explain the difference between varigated yarn, and self-striped yarn! I think that I would enjoy talking with you! You have a great personality!!
Thank you for this very informative video. I am a comparitavely new crocheter and am always in awe of the many brands of yarn I always stick to the 8 and 4 ply acrylic yarns. Now I would like to diversify. Thank you again.
I tried to make a scarf with Bernat Pop last year and was very disappointed with the feel of the yarn. It was very stiff with no drape in an open stitch. I used a stitch from a stitch pattern book but had to alter it to have matching edges (1 side had a single dc but the other side did not) so I redid the scarf several times before I abandoned it. I haven't used the Caron cake yet but it feels much softer in the ball.
Thank you for the comparison. I'm getting ready to recommend self stripping yarn to someone for an Afghan and now I can be more in informative when I'm asked about the differences.
Hi Lydia, I like either of these particular brands for blanket making, but I will say the POP can go in the washing machine (if that's a consideration for your friend!) Thank you for watching :)
Jayda InStitches That's good to know. I think I'll use the POP yarn for my granddaughter, who's away at college, so that she'll be able to take care of it without any problem. Thanks for the info.
I love your videos and have turned my auntie into them as well! We've both made a couple of your slipper patterns and they've all turned out FANTASTIC.
Hi Jayda, thank you for that info. Very good to know. I have tried an acrylic/wool blend. I did not like it. It was difficult to work with. I was using double crochet for a simple scarf. I used the recommended crochet hook too. It may have been the quality of the yarn itself. It seemed like it wasn't spun well. I did contact Lion Brand company. They were gracious. But I won't buy that Scarfie yarn again. No matter there are lots of other yarns to choose from. My love of crocheting is growing :)
Thanks for sharing your video and for telling us about the different functions of the types of 🧶 “ brands “ Because this is good to “ know “ to prevent shrinking or drooping or causing the stitch pattern to get all Stretched “ out “
It has been fun crocheting with self stripping yarn.I have sweet roll.by premier 100% axryclic 245 yds.I will try the others. Thanks for keeping us updated. You are awesome.Happy Crocheting
I love your enthusiasm for yarn! People think I'm crazy when I get excited about a ball of twisted strands of fiber. (AKA: String, lol) Great information, and many thanks!
Hi I made the shawl in the Caron Cakes blue you are holding up it looks fantastic. I actually stopped the pattern to fit my granddaughter and she loves it
Thanks,Jayda. i have been using the Caron Cakes. love them. i havent purchased a Bernat Pop. we have them at our WalMart. just havent purchased. will soon. Gotta use some of my Caron cakes. again thank you. have a great day.
I am looking for different shades of stripes of pink yarn like Bernat Candy Floss color scheme in cheaper price. Also, I am looking for black and white schemes for a shawl project. Any suggestions? Please and thank you very much. Hugs.
Thanks for explaining self-striping vs. variegated, first of all. I'm a sucker for any color-changing yarn and so is hubby lol I always wonder why the weight of the skein is more important than yardage, which matters to me a lot more. After all, weight depends on the material, thicknes and the amount of yarn (yardage). That's why I always look at yardage when comparing yarns. I have Pop waiting to be used for a poncho gift. It's sooo soft and lovely, can't wait to use it! got lovely curtains from Caron cakes, which I looove. Thank you, Jayda!
This video gave me a better understanding to this two products, thanks for sharing, i only wish you showed a project with the bernat yarn so i could properly see d difference in how the color formulates, regardless still very helpful thank you.
I thoroughly enjoyed this video. You were to the point and enthusiastic about what you were saying....and not the least bit boring. I suspected the pricing has something to do with the size skeins and you have confirmed that....thanks.
Do these two have similar lengths of each color? Would love to know what the length of given colors are, in order to know how it will stripe up on various projects.
Hi! Great question :) I've found that the colour lengths can vary, even within the same skein, but not by very much. Having said that, most of the projects I've used the cakes on so far included a lot of increasing and decreasing, so the stripes would have changed in size even if the colours were all the same length. This would be a good thing to test out!
OMG Thank you soooo much for ALL this information! I always wonder about the worsted weight part as ALL patterns refer to it. You are my newly found HERO now lol Well done and thank you so much for all that you do here
I learned a lot about yarn by watching this video! I’ve been crocheting for years and haven’t heard someone explain “size 4” before. I’ll have to go look at the labels on my yarn now! I also didn’t realize Caron cakes had a small wool content; but thinking about it’s feel now (I made a blanket with it about a year ago) it makes sense. By the way, you’re a joy to listen to, and I subscribed! ☺️
After this video, I went out and purchased Caron Cake big cakes. WoW beautiful. I crocheted a Chevron afghan using 2 strands of yarn with an "M" size hook. I used one light Caron cake shade of blue and one dark Caron cake if I can send you a pick let me know where to your FB or Twitter? this made a beautiful afghan that I gave away for a gift. I had to buy more to do it again... I highly recommend it.
Hi Amanda, so far the only place I've found the Caron Cakes is Michaels (I think they carry it exclusively) but I think you can also order them on line :)
Thank you for this very informative video, was very curious about the Caron cakes yarn, I absolutely love this self striping yarn. Can you suggest a yarn that is very soft for infinity scarfs/cowl neck scarves?
Hi Seanna-Marie, thank you for watching! One of my favourite soft yarns is Bernat Premium (available at Walmart here in Canada) it's acrylic and really soft :)
Thanks - very useful. Have used the Caron product (because of the wool component) but not the Bernat. I like the long lengths between colour changes, but find the transitions too sudden. Presumably in this regard Bernat is the same as Caron.
Thank you, Jayda, very informative. I have made shawls and scarves out of Caron cakes but have not tried the Bernat. I also want to try the Premier Sweet Roll yarn, have you tried that? It is 100% acrylic like the Bernat.
Hi Jayda! Thanks for the Compare & Contrast video on those two beautiful yarn products! One thing to note is the washing instructions for the Caron Cakes is different in that it needs to be dried laying flat due to the wool content whereas the Bernat POP can be put in the dryer. I've never tried self-striping yarn before and wondered if it's difficult to choose a pattern to obtain the desired effect of stripes that happen randomly throughout rows or stripes that are happening evenly at the end of rows...?
Hi Pam, yes! Because one is a wool blend, it definitely effects the washing and drying :) I find plain patterns and big projects (blankets, pillows, ponchos, sweaters, etc) make a great canvas to showcase self-striping yarn :)
Hi yet again it's me. Just to say a great big thank you for showing me the caron wool it's so nice and easy to work with. I have got three cakes but I have just ordered 9 cakes so I make a beautiful pattern that I have seen. Thanks again Tracey from chorley Lancashire uk
I've made a pretty V shaped shawl, with 4 skeins of Bernat Pop,in birch bark and blue. Started at bottom, with a double V stitch. Wal-Mart $5.each,in California. Purchasing another skein, online, for $6.to make a nice border or fringe,IDK. Took me a week already. The color changing, makes me want to get to the next color..lol. Nice yarn. Want to make more things with wool,I love it. Crocheted this project with a J hook.
Hi Jayda, I made that shawl but stopped after it would fit my granddaughter it was in that blue Caron cake yarn and she just loved it. By the way I made a long change from the yarn and made a tie for the shawl I twisted it inyyo the last row and I thought looks great Thanks for all you info Paula from Boston
I am currently working on a Crochet Ten-Stitch blanket using the Bernat Pop, colorway Foggy Notion. I'm about 8 skeins into it, and have 5 skeins left. It will be bed-size when I'm done, so that two people can get under it just fine. It's pretty heavy and warm.
I am buying CARON Cake at Wal-mart for Only $4.99 !!! 👏👏👏 I will keep using that brand... Thank you for your recomendations!!! Greetings from Arizona!!! 🙌💕
Lol... 😝 You are right! I checked to be sure and what I got at Wal-mart is Lions Brand Mándala.. they look do similar.. 👌 Thank you for the observation! 🙌 Greetings!!!
I'm allergic to wool, so that makes my decisions on what yarn to buy. I haven't use the self stripping yarns yet. I'll have to buy some. Thanks for sharing
This was great information especially for people like me that are beginners. Can you tell me if you have a video on "contrasting colors" to a self-striping yarn? Should a color chart (found through using google) be used? Thank you.
Hi Nancy-Jo, thank you for your suggestion :) If you're looking for a little seasonal colour-chart fun, you can check out our recent video on Autumn Colour Pallets: ua-cam.com/video/pETUMKqi4Vw/v-deo.html
Hi Janey, it's always a good idea to follow the washing instructions on the label of the yarn you purchase, but when in doubt, treat everything like it might be wool and hand wash in cool water and lay flat to dry :) If it's 100% acrylic (like the POP) you can machine wash in cool water and machine dry on light heat!
Hi Jayda!!..very nice review..!!..I love Caron Cares..have done a Poncho and few Shawls...love the colors..!!..I've seen Barnat Pop but have not work with it....thank you for this tutorial !!
I`ve used both and I like using Caron Cakes over the Bernat Pop. To me Caron is softer, making it easier to work with. Berant Pop is not consistent, some skeins are nice and soft and others aren`t which is strange and off putting. Both have lovely colors to choose from. Thanks for your review.
Hello Jayda! I Love watching your videos. Can you tell me how to find the outer edge on caron big cake? I know these cakes usually start from inside the ball and I did find the inner edge. But I also wanna find the outer edge as I wanna try to double the yarn and then work on it. Please help!
Hi there! I haven't actually seen a big caron cake yet, but it's possible that the outer end is tucked into the opposite end that the inner end is (I find a lot of skeins do that for neatness!)
Wow this was very very informative to me because i shop on Amazon a lot and they got those super small bonbons that i nearly purchased. I instead ordered some shawls in a cake but i was looking at the Caron cake and the bernat pops and thinking hmm should i buy this or not. So now i know what to buy and what to run away from! Thank you soo much for this video!!
Jayda to make a throw adult size the pattern calls for at least 3 pounds of yarn. The size is 40 by 60 inches How many.skeins of either of bernat pop or caron cakes would that size of afghan or bigger require
I'm currently obsessed with the neon shades of Red Heart Stripes line, I forget the name of the one I'm doing in a c2c but its almost a rainbow, minus a blue shade. But the pink/orange/yellow/green/violet/purple/black is my life!
Thanks for sharing! :) I wondered about these when I saw them at Michael's. I think I will go and buy some now :). Love your videos your such a great teacher! I had left a comment under your Tunisian Crochet Stitch and had a question on it :) Thanks again :)
Unless I have a reason not to I usually always go cheaper with my yarn so therefore I always will probably get the Bernat Pop skeins however if I ever seen Carron Cakes on Sale I will probably buy then too. Either way these types of skeins are so fun to craft with! Thanks for the video Jayda! As always!
Hi Jayda, Thank you so much for your information on the different yarns. I haven't used either one of these yet. I have used sweet roll and this yarn does bring out different colors with lighter or darker colors. I like the blueberry in the sweet roll. I'm making a baby blanket with it & it's turning out really pretty. I also subscribed because you really make some beautiful things and take your time to explain. :-)

Awesome job

Hi Susan, we're so pleased we could be helpful! Thank you for watching :)
The only thing I dislike about the Caron Cakes is hand wash lay flat to dry, very important to tell someone when you give them a handmade item.
crystal morrison oh, thank you. I didn't know how to wash. Was given without wrapper.
crystal morrison hi. I did wash n tumble dry CARON cakes the hats came out fine. They were a charity gift n I wanted to make sure washing wouldn't be anything extra.
I put mine in the washer and dryer
Doesn't hurt anything
Wendelyn Young I made the corner to corner baby blanket and it did shrink a bit and lost the shape I had to re wash it by hand and lay it out and block it to save it. You can wash it but I wouldnt recommend it just from my experience, you can but I guess the project and maybe my washer setting are just up to hi or something
I use delicate settings and low heat
Sorry yours shrunk :(
I'm so glad you explained what 3 ply means.. Ive been crocheting a couple years and never thought to ask that question.
LOVE YOUR CHANNEL ❤❤❤

Hi Laura, Thank you for watching :)
It’s my great pleasure to watch you and yours. Thank you for being you! You are a special uplifting person and so informative. 😊 🤟
Hi Shelline, thank you so much for watching!

I wish I had your level of energy and chipper news. Love your videos Mayra!

Of course I JUST bought some Bernat POP and came home and saw this. I wish I had this before shopping but look forward to learning about my yarn. :)
* giggle * On the bright side, the Bernat Pop is 100% acrylic, so whatever you make with it will be machine washable!
I love your videos and have turned my auntie into them as well! We've both made a couple of your slipper patterns and they've all turned out FANTASTIC.

The caron cakes came out really cool for scarves I made for Christmas last year! Really got a lot of nice compliments.
Thanks for sharing. I learned of Caron Cakes long before I noticed the Bernat Pops. It was good to see them compared side by side.

After this video, I went out and purchased Caron Cake big cakes. WoW beautiful. I crocheted a Chevron afghan using 2 strands of yarn with an "M" size hook. Hi Louise, that sounds so pretty! We are on Twitter :) @jaydainstitches :)
Thanks. I didn't know where to find the Caron cakes other than online, but I've seen the Beranat pops at Walmart.

Always a pleasure to watch you. Thanks
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! This answered so many of my questions I had about yarn, in general.
Hi Adam, we're so pleased we could be helpful :)
Hi Jolene, I've seen the sweet rolls recently, but haven't picked any up yet (need to use up the skeins I have LOL)!
Thanks for your help with different types of wool. I ordered some carob cake from wool warehouse around 8.00 pound plus p&p
Jayda InStitches Thank you! I'm gonna try it!
your channel has been so helpful for me thank you
Thank you for watching Allison 😊
Hi yet again it's me. Just to say a great big thank you for showing me the caron wool it's so nice and easy to work with. I have got three cakes but I have just ordered 9 cakes so I make a beautiful pattern that I have seen. Thanks again Tracey from chorley Lancashire uk
Oooh, I'd be super excited when that package arrived!
Jayda InStitches yes I can't wait I will show you the blanket when it's finished. 😀
Thank you Jayda! I haven't tried either but, have been curious. So,now I will try one !
Crocheted this project with a J hook.
informed decision. Exactly what I needed before investing heavily in a mosaic project.
Hi Jayda,
I made that shawl but stopped after it would fit my granddaughter it was in that blue Caron cake yarn and she just loved it. By the way I made a long change from the yarn and made a tie for the shawl I twisted it inyyo the last row and I thought looks great
Thanks for all you info
Paula from Boston
Hi Paula, your shawl sounds like it turned out beautifully :)
That sounds like quite the project! I bet it will be simply beautiful when you're finished :)
I am buying CARON Cake at Wal-mart for Only $4.99 !!! 👏👏👏 I will keep using that brand... Thank you for your recomendations!!! Greetings from Arizona!!! 🙌💕
Elizabeth Carpentier .. what Walmart are you going to? I'm in Arizona as well and so far I've only seen Caron cakes at Michael's
Elizabeth Carpentier its at Michaels only ( Caron Cakes) it’s store exclusive.
Lol... 😝 You are right! I checked to be sure and what I got at Wal-mart is Lions Brand Mándala.. they look do similar.. 👌 Thank you for the observation! 🙌 Greetings!!!
Paula Muhammad Is not Va Cake, is Mándala from Lions Brand what I got, but is also soft and pretty colors. 🙌 Greetings!
How nice, I've been ordering it on line and it's $7.99 at Michael's, thanks for posting that.
Hi Jayda this was great information that i appreciate learning from you!!! ❤ your tutorials!
Hi Valentina, thank you for watching!
Thank you for the great videos . I have watched a few a am grateful for the information
Thank you for watching Eva 😊
I'm allergic to wool, so that makes my decisions on what yarn to buy. I haven't use the self stripping yarns yet. I'll have to buy some. Thanks for sharing
Thank you for watching :)
Wow... that took the fear out of wasting $ ...NOW I`m ready to buy some. 😁I really appreciate your help!!!
THAAANKS!! 🤗 ang
Thank you so much I've been wondering about These, can you make a dolphin appliqué?
Hi Wendy, thank you for your suggestion :)
Love your videos. I’m using the chevron pattern for the lap blanket for my hubby’s Xmas gift
Thank you for watching John-Paul!
Thank you Jayda. I would love to know the washing instructions for each brand please.
Another very informative video! Thanks Jayda. I do have a question.... will the Bernat pop work for that beautiful shawl? Thank you very much!
Alana Mitchell it will work, I made a shawl following her tutorial and used Bernat pop :)
Sweet!! Thanks Chrissi Savage!
I bought Bernat POP, (Blue Blaze & Hot Chocolate) I'm making a corner to corner baby blanket in blue. (Hot Chocolate is for me!)
Awesome video :) I love both these brands And im going crazy over the new Caron cakes products! So cute!
Hi Chrissi! They just keep coming out with more "mouth-watering" colour combos!
Hi Jayda!!..very nice review..!!..I love Caron Cares..have done a Poncho and few Shawls...love the colors..!!..I've seen Barnat Pop but have not work with it....thank you for this tutorial !!
This week I went to wallmart jayda and the smaller caron cake was on sale im in brampton thought I share that with you lol love your you tube
Hi Laura, I haven't seen Caron Cakes at walmart! Wow! What a great find!
At the start.. I didn't like your style but now i am used to... Happy Jayda... I like you
I`ve used both and I like using Caron Cakes over the Bernat Pop. To me Caron is softer, making it easier to work with. Berant Pop is not consistent, some skeins are nice and soft and others aren`t which is strange and off putting. Both have lovely colors to choose from. Thanks for your review.
Hi Valincia, thank you for sharing :)
Thanks so much for this video! I've wondered about the difference in the two brands, and this answered every question that I have!!
Thanks Jayda! I can’t find the pattern for the striped wrap. I would love to make that!
Hi Anna, check the links in the description box :)
Hi Kellisha, we're happy to be helpful :) Thank you for watching!
I thought those Bonbons were a great deal . . till I checked the weight.)-: Watch out for words you haven't heard before.
Jayda to make a throw adult size the pattern calls for at least 3 pounds of yarn. The size is 40 by 60 inches
How many.skeins of either of bernat pop or caron cakes would that size of afghan or bigger require
Wonderful information!!! Thank you sooooo much.
I'm currently obsessed with the neon shades of Red Heart Stripes line, I forget the name of the one I'm doing in a c2c but its almost a rainbow, minus a blue shade. But the pink/orange/yellow/green/violet/purple/black is my life!
I love those skeins too! They're SO fun!
I recommend when you purchase to buy enough at once to complete your project
Always, always, always!!
Thank You !! For this information, it helps a lot when selecting yarn.
Hi Marybeth, we're happy to be helpful!
Thanks for sharing! :) I wondered about these when I saw them at Michael's. I think I will go and buy some now :). Love your videos your such a great teacher! I had left a comment under your Tunisian Crochet Stitch and had a question on it :) Thanks again :)
Hi Georgette, thank you for watching!
As always!
Hi! Thank you for watching :)
Hi Sandra, thank you for watching and subscribing!
Solid video with valuable information. Thank you.
Hi! Thank you for watching :)
