I like that you acknowledged the detail that Messmer is blind. He’s left eye is closed, like his sister’s - Melina’s eye, but his right eye was plucked out. Rendering him blind
In fact, there’s a cool detail as to how Messmer can “see” us. Malenia is blind, so she uses the dance that the Blindswordsman taught her - with the water amongst her arena to detect our presence. In contrast, Messmer uses his SNAKES as his eyes - as shown by the intro cinematic where he’s surprised that we’re tarnished after looking at us through his serpents
Time for those stripped of the grace of gold to meet death. In the embrace of Messmer’s flame.
Mongrel intruder. Thou'rt Tarnished, it seemeth.
Elden Rot
You finally learning how to dodge Messmer’s most vicious attack at the end, right before you beat him, was simply cinema.
Whats crazy about Messmer is he is kicking your Tarnished ass WITHOUT a great rune. The game opens by saying the Demigods were corrupted by their newfound power granted in their great runes, but Messmer does not have one, he's just THAT GUY.
He's the closest we can get to a Full Power Artorius fight.
Messmer really out here giving Spear mains and Scalies some FABULOUS representation.
My second character being a spear main was super hyped getting that Messmer weapon
@Tony2-Dirty Why? It's got the terrible "Great Lance"moveset, and its throwing attacks do no damage. The only decent thing about it is the AOW.
@ that’s exactly why.
@@emperorpalpatine4953 That's a loser's mentality. If you wanna use a weapon, ya use it, and ya make it work instead of bitching about good or bad! 😤
And......now I dont like Messmer.
Damn it , why did you have to add the Scalies part?
Big lore reveal and the DLC's big boy in one episode. Can't wait
SOON, TARNISHED. WILT THOU BE TAKEN IN THE JAWS... OF THE ABYSSAL SERPENT
ive waited 12 years for this
Melina! Finaly we have answers. At last we have knowledge of soulsbornes most mysterious character.
52:00 Messer is almost certainly Melina's brother.
@@fumeknightofshovelry3901 ...you mean brother?
@@_2fcd_978Oops
The way everything just goes quiet when it shifts to his snake's eye is so good
I hope they'll comment back on Melina's case... Her being Messmer's sister and all.
Notice how he says "mother" then pauses for a bit before saying "Marika" and cursing her, he's actually disowning her in his last breath and I DON'T blame him. Marika is a REALLY bad mother.
EDIT: I think his father would be Radagon. It would follow the theme of Marika and Radagon's children being cursed since Malenia and Miquella are also afflicted.
Melina is also afflictec. Shes "Bodiless"
Wooo! Yeah baby, this is what I’ve been waiting for!
I sense a lot of drinks in their near future.
No spoilers ahead:
- What an amazing fight, Messmer is among my top 3 favourite Elden Ring fights, it's hard but fair, and everything's just incredible
-> His ost has some bits of Radagon's theme in it, so he's probably the son of Radagon and Marika
-> And while Marika used him, he probably had his fire and the serpent(s) since birth (due to this kind of 'incest birth', he was cursed just like Malenia and Miquella)
-> And yes, Melina is his sister (maybe even twin because of their similar fire nature), it's basically confirmed
- I totally understand that you did this fight alone, it just feels right, and to be honest, Hornsent is not nearly as important as Igon xD
What an amazing premiere!!!
I still refuse to believe that Radagon was a creation of Marika. The lore is still way too nuanced for me to accept that. it's disappointing that the dlc didn't expand on Radagon in some way, let alone the other important questions.
@@anonisnoone6125 Hey, gotta leave SOME crumbs for fanfic authors to nibble on, yeah? 😂
Such an amazing fight. Incredibly tough but also surprisingly fair. And phase 2 is a terrifying spectacle with the serpents. I highly recommend watching Zulle the witch’s breakdown of the details of the model cause there’s a lot of interesting details that you can’t stop to appreciate due to the hectic nature of the fight
I mean, that last bit is true for a lot of Miyazaki's bosses. Bro loves his little details
Good choice on the premiere, that was entertaining. All of Messmer's cutscenes are so well done.
Im just gonna say, in the archives of the game Melina is describe as "ChildrenofMarika"
Bro Messmer has an entire land basically to himself, loyal followers, snake pets, a bro as his general, and Rellana's twin moons.
Dudes in paradise but can't get over his mummy issues.
He proves these games need a counselor character. When even your chief gods and goddesses need therapy, shit is whack.
Lore hint: if you want to know how long messmer has been around, you can go to the mountaintops of the giants where the giant corpses are and...lets say you'll find some familiar sights.
Also those were some nice attempts. Keep it up🫡
So one thing to note is that Messmer is also the only child where it is stated in-game that Marika loved, or at least made gestures of love.
And also, Hornsent’s dialogue is actually really sad. I wish the game showed us charred cribs, impaled children, etc. because I think this is the only time where it is stated that the genocide included children other than being inferred from it being a genocide. It shows the “but the hornsent were bad too” thing is not that solid, because what did the children do? (Plus other hornsent were also jarred and imprisoned, but they were definitely not spared)
Well the children will learn the things that the adults do, plus Hornsent jarring their own people just makes them worse, and gives vibes of Nazi Germany.
Didn't Marika also love Godwyn?
And on ur 2nd point, companies r too pussy to show dead children for some reason, yet will show everything else in existence.
Yeah. There's nuance given to it in that both sides were fucked up, but in the end, Messmer was still sent there on what is more or less a crusade.
I did NOT know there was a gap you could fit through to that bookcase room. I'm pretty sure the intended path is to just drop down from above but hey, those exploration points are absolutely deserved.
Now to explore the remaining, like, 50% of the keep lmao
I swear there isn't a gap in my run because I remember jumping back there and getting stuck. Like the floating in the air between objects stuck and eventually the game auto killed me. I've only ever seen people jump down into that room.
@@burns0100 Joegito's Bullshit Powers strike again! 😂
"Mongrel intruder"
Okay GILGAMESH 😂
Messmer is such a fun boss fight. His moveset looks crazy but actually is really fair to fight against, he's like a Milenia 2.0 in terms of how his fight goes but I think overall due to how the scaling works in the DLC and how high level everyone is he isn't as hard as her.
Oh, the lore, the tragic Messmer lore!
He was never meant to be a villain! The poor man tried to treat the Jars, and record the history he had to burn! He had followers that loyal for good reason!
Messmer even got on with the Hornsent at first before he was ordered to burn them! That's why the old lady called it a betrayal!
Once again, Marika Ruins Everything!
Thank you, Gents, I'll enjoy this work on release, your efforts to lore-hound are the best! Good luck!
I predict around 10 deaths on Messmer
I could definitely see less. He's got a small health pool, and those hammers Joe's using do big damage
@@Wade8419 I don't think they would make it a live premiere if it took them less than 10 tries. But we'll see.
@pipusmaximus189 definitely a fair point. I think it's a good enough, and important enough fight to warrant it anyways. I think he's on the easier side, but he's still the most fun fight in the DLC imo, and he's important for the lore of the DLC. I hope you are right though, its fun when we get lots of attempts!
Took them 16 deaths!
@@Wade8419 Honestly, I wish Messmer was slightly harder and had 2 full hp bars. Aside from that, he's perfect.
6:48 - 50 points to Joe's exploration stat, that was IMPRESSIVE!!
Yeah i was waiting for them to fight this boss
For the sister..
"You must find kindling. Only the smoldering flame in the Great Forge of the Giants,
on the highest peak in the Lands Between, can burn the Erdtree.
But special kindling is required to reignite the flame.
For the flame to burn the Erdtree, a sacrifice is needed. Of one who envisions the flame.
And can lead you to the Rune of Death."
And who is the one who volunteer to be the kindling?
Someone who is "burnt and bodiless"?
49:39 - "Do you think God stays in heaven because He too lives in fear of what He's created, here on Earth?" Steve Buscemi's mad scientist character in Spy Kids 2.
Gotta love Bootleg Full Power Artorius.😂
Yess I've been waiting for this fight since you guys started the dlc, good luck joe😀👍
That is indeed the implication to Melina being the sister there was some conflict on the description since it changed and was changed back in an update. lol
Yes Messmer is a amazing boss and a good character very loyal to his mother, thats some dedication to never stary from his path despite everything.
This is false information. The item was never changed for the public. Since launch, everyone had the same item. The item was only slightly different (/unfinished) for pre-release players like IGN etc.
Otherwise, the item always referred to Melina since the beginning. I remember Smoughtown getting pissed at people spreading this misinformation, so he set the record straight, as someone who played the game before release, and said nothing was changed for the public audience
As a reminder, do NOT use Messmer's kindling until you've done everything else you can think of ! Especially in terms of NPC questlines.
She disappears after Hornsent
They can't speak to her again because they attacked her in the invasion. She takes off to her other location later on now. You can only talk to her if you help her.
@@burns0100 Oh so she doesn't go for a second target when you do that ?
@@burns0100 You can also talk to her if you just don't help her invasion, or the hornsent with his
Oh soon it's time.
53:21
Hornsent: mourning the loss his brutally murdered, impaled child, wife, and mother in the genocide
Joe: “You weren’t the best of people”
😭😭😭😭😭
People who say "Messmer didn't go far enough" are hopefully joking but are still strange to me lmao
Who plays through a story about how the cycle of violence only ever leads to more suffering, and says "MY turn on the cycle will be the one that ends it once and for all"
@@UseZapCannon I’m sure Joe didn’t mean any ill intent, Hornsent didn’t even mention his dead child yet
I just found the unfortunate and insensitive timing of that comment funny lol
O lightless creature
Without spoiling anything, all I’ll say is that I’d recommend doing the extra stuff around the map before using that fancy new flame that Messmer “gifted” you. You don’t have to, as nothing gets locked after a certain point or anything like that. But some stuff just won’t be as impressive in comparison if you go through the main quest first.
There’s a cool theory that Messmer sees through the eyes of the serpents that hang off of him, seeing as he’s blind in both eyes, which explains the opening cutscene and how Messmer can recognise a Tarnished (from the eyes) from across the chamber.
I replayed the DS3 Ringed City DLC recently too, and noticed Messmer actually takes quite a few attack animations from the Spear-wielding Ringed Knights.
Knowing Miyazaki, he'll try to make something of that, but I do not like those implications, this I choose to ignore them.😂
Awesome vid.
Best boss in ER
Malenia is still better to me, personally.
W
Melina is the sister
Mist or beast
A fantastic boss. However, it has one of the other mistranslations in the DLC I commented about earlier.
The chest piece description says "on his mother's wish" which makes it sound like she ordered him to do it. When directly translated, it says "for the sake of his mother's wish" which doesn't imply Marika ordered anything.
It seems less like Marika told him to take the blame and more like Messmer just chose to take all the blame on himself.
localization always ruins these things, just like with Ranni's stuff.
@@PrickledPnah Ranni’s stuff is fine
I saw on the twitter the other day that there is another bit of mistranslation, as supposedly, in Japanese version, base serpent was used by Marika to seal away Messmer flame.
I don't think there's any sense in treating the Japanese version like it has the purest version of the devs' intentions anyway. I'd sooner trust the English text (written by professional Japanese-to-English localizers, and probably cross-checked by ESL-speaking Japanese consultants) than trust an American/British layperson's take on google-translated Japanese item descriptions
There's simply no such thing as direct localization - there's no way to express a Japanese sentence in English, even the _simplest_ one, without losing some microscopic bit of subtext or flavor along the way. Matching the original text's tone, preserving subtext that would be lost if you translated word-for-word, etc. is a creative exercise on the part of the localizer, and there's no one right way to do it
@@UseZapCannon the localization team is also literally considered part of the writing team at FromSoft. I think a majority of these translations are fine with only a few things slipping through the cracks.
And plus, a lot of these ‘mistranslations’ are just cases of people understanding literal phrasing better than the old English terms used in the actual dialogue. Ranni’s dialogue is still the same as the Japanese version
I do hope there not on that version where the patchnotes is
The fact that she is referred to as his younger sister means that she was the first born, but she says she was born outside the erd tree. Can someone explain?
Her being younger would mean that Messmer was born first, so he’d actually be the firstborn. As for being born outside the Erdtree, both Messmer and Melina could have been born in the land of shadows before Marika ascended
No. Younger means she was born after him. It would go, Messmer, then the Twins, then Melina.
Okay turns out I’m dumb, sorry for being a dumb dumb.
@@JoinTheVoidBecomeWhole wait was Melina born before the twins? From the way she talks to you in the base game, it makes sound like she came after Miquella and Malenia
@@Tony2-Dirty I’m admittedly not brushed up on Melina’s lore, so she may have been born after the twins
Edit: Apparently she was born at the foot of the Erdtree, not outside of the lands between like I originally misremembered, so she’s probably the youngest sibling
