YAMAHA FG830 vs ORANGEWOOD ECHO

- I am trying to decide which guitar I should keep, so I decided to make a comparison video. These two popular guitars are similar with solid spruce tops, price point, and size. Help me decide which one I should keep by voting on the poll at the end of video!
I happen to own an fg830, so admittedly I’m biased. But it’s clear that the fg830 has greater tone and clarity over the Orangewood.
"Clear ...greater tone and clarity"? What BS.
Echo is not bad for the price, but Yamaha FG830 definitely sounds much better to my ears.
Nice playing and thanks for the great comparison video.
❤
I totally agree, Dear Sunny. His Orangewood guitar has so much midrange it's sounds snotty and muddy, whereas the Yamaha is a balance of power, clarity, and cosmicness.
The FG830 is a great guitar for the money. Love mine.
You can't go wrong with a Yamaha FG830. I own one, and it is fantastic.
Dear Larry - you would not be from Durham, are you?
@@beasheerhan4482 from Maryland
@@lhvent Thank you for answering, Dear Larry!
You just can't beat Yamaha at this price point but I'm sure if I had an Orange wood I wouldn't have been disappointed... Great playing...
Thank you for this video! I REALLY appreciate it. I ordered an Orangewood Brooklyn and am VERY disappointed. I will be sending it back due to neck issues! But now I know which guitar to buy instead. Plus, many of the comments below like the Yamaha better. Hope you kept the Yamaha FG 830.
I'm 82 y o and have played a lot of guitars for 70 years. My son just bought the 830. I took it to my Bg club and it did well for a Laminated guitar.
But like the 830 the Orangewood is Laminated too. After listening o the demo I'm hard pressed to say which you should keep. Just on reputation
and sound alone I agree with the other responder. Stay with the 830. I own a Martin Road Series.
830 has a solid top
same for the orangewood
Not sure wut you mean, but it's solid spruce top, lam on sides and back.
Yamaha 830 is better built and sounds superior, but the Orangewood is one Hell of a Looker.
You could use it as a safe gigging guitar to take out.
Both sound good. Neither sounds 'superior'.
Orangewood sounds better than expected, and it's pretty close. I'd give the nod to the Yamaha though.
the Yamaha sounds fuller/richer.
I bought an FG800 recently and turned it into a Baritone (added an LR baggs Lyric pickup).
Amazing sounding guitar!! Don't know how Yamaha is doing it but they've really upped their game
You're dreaming!
The attack from the Orangewood top is way quicker and sharper.
The Yamaha sounds muddy in comparison
@@rickgiannone6304 to each their own
Yes, I, too, use a much lower 5th and 6th string on the Yamaha FG830 - F# and low B respectively, while keeping the other strings at a normal pitch. It sounded good when it came to me, in standard tuning, but, this B major chord tuning, plus a few custom adjustments, have made this guitar sound quite wonderful - powerful and sophisticated.
They've 'upped their game at Yamaha, Dear Belling, because other companies that make cheap guitars, like Epiphone, are making killer sounding guitars that, 20, 30, or 40 years ago, cost an arm and a leg to buy. Funny, they all could have done this long ago, as it is all in the bracing heights and widths, which does not require more than a couple of hours for a master to do. I guess they have all given up on the philosophy of purposefully making cheap guitars sounding cheap! I know bankruptcy pushed Gibson into letting Epiphone press the pedal to the metal.
@@beasheerhan4482 which of the new "old" Epiphones do you like?
I’ve played the Orangewood. Alone it sounds great but when I put up against my fg730s it sounds a little thin a tinny. Still a great value.
I have a Yamaha FG730S too along with a bunch of other older good quality higher end solid top Yamaha's from the 1980's and earlier. The 730 just seems more whole somehow, the sound is ALWAYS good, intonation excellent, on and on. The others sound different and really good in their own ways, but if I had to pick one in an emergency it would be the 730 though I'd cry a long time for the others.
I’ve been agonizing between these two guitars. They both sounded pretty identical to me. I’m leaning toward the Orangewood. Aesthetically I like it better plus it has the wider nut width that I prefer. Great video!
And also the inlay stands out big time. I would go with the Orangewood for the professional setup, and free shipping too.
If u like wide nut u may also want to check out seagul s6
No bottom end in that orange one...SOUNDS LIKE ITS MUFFELED STILL IN THE BOX..oh well....
Yes Yamaha...if only you could get a setup, outta the box would be cool..but Yamaha SOUNDS BETTER
@@Itsme-ni9jk I ended up buying the Yamaha FG830 and I think it sounds great! Just bought the Yamaha FG850 (all Mahogany) and that sounds great too!
i love your guitar skills. you make any guitar sound amazing!
If the yamaha is an older, already aged model it's not a very fair comparison. I know Orangewood has only been around for a few years but yamaha has been making that model for a very long time.
If both guitars same specs, same age, same strings ok fair game.
Yamaha had more to say I think, but Echo was in it too, jus' a we shy
That 830 sounds great!
Yammie all the way. OWood was a little sharp/tinny for my taste, while Yamaha sounded full and rich but still chimey and balanced. Build quality & playability over looks any day. Good choice.
I have the fg820 mahogany back and sides awesome guitar!!!! You can't hardly beat any yamaha acoustic guitar!!!! Amazing
The yamaha has much more clarity and balance when strumming, in my taste.
Nice playing bro ✌🏼
Both are nice guitars for the money but the Yamaha clearly sounds better. I bought an Orangewood Echo and returned it because it had almost no low end and sounded a bit weak and thin.
Aside from the sound, did either guitar seem easier to play...neck, frets, etc? Thanks!
Nice comparison! I use my FG830 for strumming most of the time since it has more bass than my LL16ARE, and more volume as well, sometimes I just hear it say:”Play the f**king hell out of me.”
It has a fantastic tone but missing dynamic compares to LL16ARE
Switchfoot and David Crowder Band?!? Nice demo.
Ow has a more boxy colder bright tone. Yamaha has warmer resonant open tone.
Which one has the best nut height? More comfortable to play on?
I'm a Yamaha fan boy myself having said that, I still have my eye on a few Orangewoods guitars
I had my eye on the yamaha....went with orangewood...got the oliver then immediately got the Brooklyn because I was so happy with it....I played them a bunch and went back to guitar center to try the yamaha....I am personally so much happier with my choices
Also im now putting a way some cash and will be getting the ava live now asap. My goal guitar was a martin but now i know the quality of the low end models....positive ill be happy saving money and getting so much out of a guitar.
I have the Yamaha FG830 and love it, but I have my eye on the Orangewood Hudson electric-acoustic.
@@glorioskiola its a great guitar....i just think it lacks personality
Which one was easier and felt better to play??
The nice gig bag, and the professional setup in favor of Orangewood.
Yamaha sounded more bold, Orangewood sounded more mellow. Tough choice. Orangewood might sit in a mix better or work well with live solo singing while Yamaha would be better for solo recording and instrumental tracks, or in a band.
Hey, they both sounded great! Curious which one you settled on? Didn't see a poll at the end of the video so I'm curious.
Click the top right corner of video! I have a month to return so I'm still deciding between the two.
@@eightclapguitar8063 So - which did you keep?
What song were you playing during finger slap?
Fg (800-850)series, best guitars !..
thanks..
The orange wood brand is tope five 5 for beginners. I learned to play on a 1700s harmony 😏 action so high they used it in basic military training for the crawl under instead of barb wire. My hand was so strong it's ego was larger than my own. You guys are at an advantage that's for that fire burning in your loins. I've been playing for 27 years. If you wanted to learn a song you would use tab imagine learning over the hills and far away. Yeah. I did have the upper hand being able to play by ear. Eric Clapton's unplugged album inspired me to learn. Tears in heaven. I struggled for a while. My advice to beginners. Build muscle memory before anything else stretching strength and consistency. Good luck! Y'all play every day But don't be hard on yourself. Take rest, recop and Hit it hard again!!!
Nice one keep it up
You people need to listen with a good pair of ear buds the sound of both guitars are virtually the same. Give credit where it's due. Orangewood is a startup company, two brothers from Korea and is providing a quality instrument at a below market price. That being said, The Echo Torrefied Spruce Live is a much better purchase than it's sister Echo Live if you have the budget. Remember quality strings make a huge difference. Orangewood does not ship with the best quality strings. Many have reported after changing strings experienced a much richer tone overall.
Lmao you perhaps need good ears than because they do NOT sound the same. If you can't tell the Yamaha is fuller sounding I don't know what to tell you except get yourself better ears or sense of hearing for tone. It's an obvious difference that's not exactly subtle
I don't know what's funnier. You thinking they're basically the same, or you saying "good pair of ear buds." Ditch your little ear buds and listen on studio monitors or studio headphones, then maybe you'll hear what everyone else is hearing.
Can we all just stop debating and agree that Yamaha makes incredible guitars that blow other brands out of the water at a 1/4 the price?
Thank you for that. I was set on a Yamaha ll6 ARE Dreadnought & somehow came across Orangewood. After extensive research & videos; however, hard to decifer the actual sound unless live, they both appear to put on a good show. Some things I like about both. Surprised Yamaha doesn't step up their game in this price range ($500 ) to install bone as Orangewood does. Also get a nice rig bag with OWood. Neither is perfect so pick n choose the small nuances and what fits you best
I'm leaning more towards the Yamaha ll6 ARE Dreadnought in Sunburst around $569
I like the sound of the Yamaha best
I didn't find any video comparing the guitars playing in line, to know which preamp is better
Maybe a dumb question but what song were you playing during the fingerstyle section?
let that be enough - switchfoot!
Which one did you keep?
Main reason I liked this video: you played “Let That Be Enough” by Switchfoot. 😂
Hope you kept the Yamaha.
its May 2022, id personally go w/Orangewood, reason is my VOICE is very midrange, and the lighter sounds of OW would be a better fit imho........YMMV
FG830 for me
I am a Yamaha fan - but to my ear the Orangewood wins - Two great sounding guitars and GREAT playing!!!
Both sounded great. Which one had a better action?
Orange wood i have the Morgan spruce live and it’s great
Which did you end up keeping? the Yamaha sounds louder but the Orangewood looks a lot nicer in my opinion. How did the feel of these guitars compare?
Ended up keeping the yamaha! yamaha neck had more of a matte finish, orangewood had more of a glossy slick finish.
@@eightclapguitar8063 Which one had lower action? I like my strings close to the fretboard. Also, which one had easier playability? Thank you in advance! Great video!
Orangewood looks nice but I prefer the Yamaha. Better sound
What did you buy?
I thought the first song you played sounded familiar, switchfoot!
I had a chance to play on Yamaha FG830 in store and I can say that you can't grasp how it sounds live through UA-cam. It sound much better, it is balanced, harmonious and spacious sound. I could only compare it to FG820 which misses that spaciousness and harmony. It is more narrow sound, and bass is evidently lacking.
You should keep both and get rid of the lakers shirt.
@FalconerPhoto Yeh but no
Oh - That's bad!
Why?
Maybe he's a Kurt Rambis fan...
😄😄😄
Change the sadle. pins and neck to bone on the yamaha and it sounds better than a lot of martins.
I have that Ecko, and I really like it. The only thing that I'm not comfortable with is the Fretboard. It's flat, and I like one that's a little rounded. My Bar chords are just a little more difficult to flatten on middle strings. Other than that, it's the best guitar I've ever owned, including a couple Taylors and a Martin D28.
I see you're a Switchfoot fan
I kinda/sorta agonized between the Echo and Yamaha FG830 as a backup guitar. Orangewood was approx $50.00 more'n the 830. $50.00 is still $50.00.
Echo does come with a decent looking gig bag. Makes them kinda even price wise. I agree the Yamaha sounded better
Hello amazing review
Greetings from Pakistan,
please tell which guitar is good choice Yamaha fg830 vs Orangewood Echo?
& what will be your pick? :)
Thanks in Advance.
Are orangewood guitars available in Pakistan?
@@arijitpathak8920 No, not available.
Anybody?
I went with the yamaha! but i don't think you can go wrong with either one
i dont play guitars, idk how i got to this page lol. but to me the yamaha sounds better like its crisp.. the orangewood sounds distorted or muffled when he was playing it anyways which one is better??
I love my orangewood and how it plays, but damn do the Yamahas sound good. You're not too far off getting either though. $295 with the gig bag for the Orangewood or $320 for the Yamaha, so fairly close in price.
The Yamaha has a nicer tone.. very similar to a Martin HD 28
I guess you have to ask yourself why you bought one after owning the other, and if the newer one met that need? For me I'd keep both for a few reasons:
Neither is really definitively better or worse than the other. Both were around the same dollar value and the cheaper of the two would be a good "traveling" guitar in case anything happened.
The Yamaha in my opinion has a slightly more vintage, classic or expensive look.
Because of the name and look of the Yamaha its going to retain a higher value.
You're not going to get that much out of either in trade and you'll likely regret losing it.
I've traded and sold so many guitars over 40 years and I regret every single one of them.
So easy to just store one in the back of a closet for a while and see if you can live without it, and it'll be like new when you finally pull it back out and play it.
Orangewood beats that Yamaha for aesthetics and professional set-up right from the company itself, but the Yamaha is so well-made for the price and the sound holds up better than the Orangewood when playing different styles, especially in the finger-slapping department. Interesting brand, Orangewood. They're based right in my area (SoCal), but are a relatively young operation compared to the much more established Yamaha. Might give them a look-see if they got any left-handed dreadnought options within my VERY modest budget, lol...
I love the Orangewood.... until I hear it up against something else, like this Yamaha. Yamaha makes a darn fine instrument. As a brand, it's not very cool, at least in my mind. I mean, no one is lining up to own a Yamaha. But you can't go wrong with a Yamaha, no matter the price point. Just really well made, and great sound.
may be Yamaha sounds better because its a Rosewood body vs Pau Ferro body?) Most likely Yamaha has a better bracing system.
The orangewood sounds a little cheap. Noticed straight away with the strumming and finger slapping. Keep the Yamaha
YAMAHA...ALL THE WAY AROUND... HIGHS LOWS CLEARER GREAT GUITAR
Obviamente la yamaha suena mucho mejor, pero por el precio esta muy bien la orangewood
I think the Yamaha was a bit better but if you were using the stock Ernieball strings on the Echo then it wasn't a fair comparison. Those strings are horrible I don't understand why they use those. I hope you gave the Orangewood a try with some Daddarios or Elixrs or else you never saw its full potential. But it would probably only be equal to the Yamaha at best even with new strings, but the plus side is you get the nice gig bag so maybe the Orangewood is a slightly better value? Can't really go wrong with either choice I think.
Martin Authentics 12 light gauge 540s are better blue pack
I prefer the Yamaha...
I am getting a grand concert by Orangewood. It is only $125, the Victoria.
Everyone's saying the Yamaha sounds better didn't notice that the guy went further away from the hole with the orange wood
switching to the echo sounds like turning on a high pass filter
The Orangewood sounded like a cardboard box keep the FG 830
UA-cam videos are not example for sound comparison. A lot of uploaders don't have quality mics.
@@Sig721Tau and the sound improvement on the Yamaha fg830 over the orangewood is still apparent.
wow i got to get a yam,mmy
Very close sound in this demo. I had to wash my eyes out after seeing the "Lakers" T-shirt.
i like the mellow sound of the orangewood better
I vote Yamaha
YAMAHA
FG 830 always wins😍😍
I tend to prefer solid wood guitars. But if I were to have to make a choice between solid woods and laminated models, solid wood guitars check more of
the preference boxes. I own one guitar that sounded tinny unless I was using at least a 1.3mm thickness guitar pick. 1.5 even better. 2.0 thickness? Go
figure!! The guy who plays a Gibson RB250 banjo in our BG group like Blue Chip picks. $35.00 for just one pick? How crazy is that?
Yamaha all the way.
The mic isn’t in the same spot, so it’s flawed.
Yamaha, if I had to live with one for a long time. Orangewood sounds lacking in all areas. Almost too quiet. It seems to be a problem with Orangewood guitars from what I can tell -- the volume is not good.
Pants from Thailand
And winner is Yamaha
Fantastic review! No BS. Orangewood takes it
Yamaha Wins💪
The Orangewood was more fruity.
Yamaha exceeds in every sound test imo.
Yamaha 830 is very tough to beat and hits way above its price point as for the Orangewood..no thanks lol
.....The comments are nuts. The sound was indistinguishable..Blindfold them, then see what they say.....$70 gig bag...free set- up...coupon code and you have a no- brainer purchase...which is what I just did...
orngewood sounds better
They both sound beautiful but different. But I would take orangewood over Yamaha.
Nahhhhhhhhh..bad idea🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
The Yamaha is @ on par w/$7g martin in bottom end n mids!
Yamaha sounded better to me.
Not an echo fan but I’d you but it up against the Morgan....no comparison. Orangewood all the way
-orangewood sounds better
Echo sounds better
Honestly, they are both cheaper guitars. So neither one sounds amazing. I have the Orangewood as a beater campfire guitar that my wife bought me and it sounds good for the price it is. But sounds nowhere near as good as my Gibson songwriter or my Martin D 45. I had the same Yamaha as in this video years ago and it just never did it for me. Sorry if that makes people mad but everyone is comparing the video of two pretty cheap guitars making it sound like the Yamaha blows the Orangewood out of the water which just isn’t true.
The orangewood sounds dead by comparison. Surprising.
