I've been a diehard Martin fanatic for years now. I used to have a yamaha apx500 that I absolutely hated. I refused to play yamaha for 15 years. This past Saturday I played a FGX800C and I now own it and I absolutely love it.
Extremely helpful video, answered most of my questions as I finally narrowed down to getting one of those two. As a bass player who's looking for a cheap-yet-quality acoustic guitar, I understood with your video why the FG800 suited my ears a bit better: I tend to also prefer warmer sounds for bass, to the point of playing especially precision basses with flat wounds and tone slightly rolled off. I still think the FG830 looks and sounds richer, but not to justify the price difference for me. One question: what's the comfort level like for taller players with large hands? Thanks again and greetings from Germany
Glad it was helpful! A dreadnought size is ideally comfortable for most people above 5.6 feet of height. So playability wise you won’t have any hinderances. FG800 is a great choice you are making especially if you like that sound. Thank you. Love from India ❤️
In the future, please turn off the background music when playing an instrument. It is distracting and ruins one’s ability to hear the pure tonality and volume of the instrument. Thanks
I’m looking to get my first guitar. I found both of these on the second hand market in my area. Both are listed at $250 but the fg800 is brand new never used while the fg830 is used but very well taken care of. Wasn’t sure which one I should go for or if one is easier to learn on or more versatile. Need some help one which one to go with.

All solid guitar with sikta spruce top and mahogany back and sides vs solid (top-back) guitar with sikta spruce top and rosewood back and side , which one i should go for at same price? Does only laminated sides make that difference?
Hi, I have epiphone J15EC acoustic/electric guitar. I just play for at home and with friends and am happy with the sound. But few weeks ago, I was in a music shop to help a friend to buy something and tried Yamaha guitar (cannot remember the model) but the price was around $500 aud. The sound was quite different than my epiphone guitar. It was rich and fuller. My curious question, do Yamaha guitars sound better than Epiphone for the same price range? I want to change my guitar Yamaha.
Yes Yamahas do sound fuller, richer and more balanced in this price range. The FG series is one of the best sounding series in Yamaha in the budget range.
I have rosewood and mahogany guitars I prefer mahogany over rose wood the sound is much more balanced and I’m not a fan of binding especially around the necks of guitars but you can’t go wrong with a Yamaha acoustic guitar I’ve played an fg 150 green label for years now and it’s tone is much better then some pricy Martin’s
Does it matter in laminated back and side guitars also? I own the YAMAHA FG820 laminated Mahogany B&S model and FGX830C laminated Rosewood B&S model and they do sound quite different. Their characteristics are also as you demonstrated. However, some of the local acoustics guitar builders in my country said laminated B&S would not contribute sound characteristics in the acoustic guitar, and only the solid B&S guitar will. Does Giant Guitar manufacture use all ply from the same wood for the laminate B&S? In my experience, the sound is quite different in regards to the wood even if it is laminated especially in Yamaha Guitars. Please share your experience about the tone difference in Mahogany laminated and Rosewood laminated B&S guitars.
The sound difference will be there. But the solid ones will feel like a substantial difference. So I would like to negate the fact that laminate B&S doesn’t have a sound difference.
@94SexyStang the back and sides are laminate on both, which means what you see is a paper thin piece of nice looking wood with a thick piece of poplar in the middle. it may affect tone slightly, but not as much as if they were made of solid rosewood/mahogany, because in the center is still a piece of poplar
If I order a guitar online, will you check all the setup first and adjust if required and then only ship? OR you will send a fresh piece unopened without checking? I have been warned by friends that guitar ordered online would usually come with a high action etc etc.
Yes we do a thorough setup before dispatch. When you are buying from our website, you are buying from our store! And all the guitars we dispatch are fresh out of the boxes.
You provide an incorrect information because the fg800 has nato back and sides. The fg820 has the mahogany one. It makes sense if the 800 has more inferior sound compared to the 830 because nato is a cheap laminated wood
Yes ...a LOT of Yamaha models are made in China ....NOW I will say to be HONEST ...the Japanese RED LABEL models sound and feel better .....BUT ...I would put the FG3 red label up against any 1000 guitar and its made in China!!!!

This is a very good explanation of the differences in tonewoods on acoustic guitars .Thanks .
I like your explanation I can see the difference right away, unlike some peoples just to beat around the bush. Love it my friend!
I have the FG-830. I like Rosewood and like the binding on it. It looks better. Try an Orangewood. They aint bad. Nice video!

Yamaha FGX800C or Cort core OC mahogany?
FGX800c for the bright bold sound and durability. Cort core oc for warm sound.

To my ear fg830 sounds so good.
800 is nato which is a variant of mahogany from the east but 820 series is actual mahogany.
