The light only flashes in increments of each single digit. I explain how to read the light flashes as well. 1, 1-2 = 12 You don't add them together. The light flashes once = 1. The light flashes twice = 2 and so on. 24 would mean 1-2, 1-2-3-4 = 24

I read today that you can do it on the 1993 Camaro's with OBD1 but not the 1995's it's aggravating lol
Is the engine light on when you drive? If not then there are no codes to pull other than the "OK" functioning code which I mention in the video. An ECM will always show they are functioning. OBDII was introduced around 95/96 so the paper clip trick won't work on that system. Make sure your car is the OBDI and not the II. The shape of the plug is different.
Yes the check engine light is on when driving, I read the Lt1 F-Body form and they say 1993 is the only year on the 4th Gens you can use the paper clip on 94-95 like mine you can't. It sucks lol but I can do it on others with the OBD1 port just not 94-95 F-Body's unless it's a 1993
The MAP sensor can be bad. Replace it. Clogged injectors can cause lean mixtures. Run fuel injector cleaner in the tank to clean injectors. Check fuel pressure. A leaking EGR can cause lean mixtures. A partially stopped up fuel filter can cause lean mixtures. A leaking carb. base gasket or intake gasket can cause lean mixtures. Mity-vac can check for leaking hoses. A leaking modulator valve hose can cause lean mixtures. Get a Actron CP9690 code tester to check codes. It works on OBDI and OBDII Ford, G.M., Chrysler, and Toyota. It has code-connect to diagnose codes. EBAY has it. It comes in a black pouch. It uses 4 AAA batteries (not included) under the rear cover. It is well-lit. 2000 up is auto-test. Below, you dial in the year etc. It checks live, record, graphing, emissions readiness test, ABS, SRS, oxygen sensor test, transmission code test, and MORE!
I have a 80 coupe Deville carbureted and I found the green lead near the liter box . After many minutes of looking at It only gives me code 12 and nothing else. What can I do to fix this? Thanks
That means your cars ECM(or PCM as some also call it) is seeing no problems that it recognizes. By flashing you the #12 only, it is communicating to you that it(the ECM) is functioning as intended, but the absence of additional 'codes' other than '12' doesn't always mean that a problem(s) is not present- it just isn't causing an issue that the ECM can 'see' or detect yet(or ever in some cases. If the car is running ok, enjoy it- if not, other forms of diagnostics can be preformed by a mechanic/technician(although you should make sure the one you choose has experience in this area) doing tests the 'Old fashioned' way LOL.
I can't explain that one. You will have to get a dealer service manual and trace the wire using the scamatic. Normally when a fusible link fries you have other issues. I believe the links are only in series with the large red wires in the system, not the brown wire. You will have to test that brown wire for any breaks.
If you have to give it gas to start it to charge then the voltage regulator in the alternator is bad. Replace the alternator and it will fix the issue.
Here's one for ya. My 86 GP has a check engine light on but im not able to flash the codes. Not even with a paperclip. Not even with a gm obd plug. And my cigarette lighter has power.
I have a code 54, but I don't understand how to fix it. I can't find much on the net about what the problem would be and how to fix the issue. Maybe you could help. Thank you.
I see you found my video per my reply on your other comment. Follow the link in the description as it will take you to a site that tells you what each code means.

could you make a video on how to fix the oil/choke light? it stays on no matter what. help me out!!! I have a 1984 cutlass supreme. works great but the oil/ choke light stays on. how could I fix this problem.
I don't think Canadian models got these diagnostic computers. I've seen a Quadrajet with an electrical connector once or twice in the junkyard, but usually on 86+ with the next generaton small block design.
I have a 83 cutlass v6 231 i start the car and tried to read the codes with the paperclip i even have a obd1 gm scan tool but the light stays on and no codes can be pulled i dont think the computer is communicating i made sure its plugged in no loose connections all the light does is stay on
You read the code with the key on without the car running. If it doesn't go through the series of flashes with the scanner or paper clip in place then yes there are other issues. It might be bad.
ALL I find online is the paper clip trick which is GREAT!! and seems to do the trick BUT why don't people just go out and by a GM OBD1 code scanner?? Or even the FORD OBD1 scanner?? They are only around $25 or less I just bought a brand new one for $19.95, I was gonna do the paper clip trick but since it's my first time using a scanner and idk how to read the blinking Check Engine 1,1,2 - 1,1,3 ect code search I just went ahead and bought a GM OBD1 scanner with a book that has the list of codes. Also I figured since I'm into older vehicles might as well buy one to use in the near future, right. and maybe make a little cash on the side doing friends cars that uses OBD1.
All great points but the systems are so basic that if a free paper clips works then its all you need. I explain how to read the light flashes as well. 1, 1-2 = 12 You don't add them together. The light flashes once = 1. The light flashes twice = 2 and so on.
Thanks for the help! Guess I should of just used the paper clip trick but sorta wanted to see how the GM code reader works, it was on sale and cheap so I didn't really lose any money from buying it. I'll be watching your video some more until I get it down pack lol so Thanks!! again

It sucks lol but I can do it on others with the OBD1 port just not 94-95 F-Body's unless it's a 1993
I have 83 el camino. I am getting a code 34 (MAP sensor). Vehicle seems to be running ok. It seems to run a little lean. Any tips to fix it.
I have a 1986 cutlass and my heat only comes out of the defrost vents and my blower not work on the high setting. Do you have a video about my issues?
87moe1 not yet but plan to. It's a common issue and people ask me about it. Make sure your vacuum source from the engine is hooked up.
I got it, it was the vacuum lines thank you!!
my codes on my 87 cutlass is 11 but what does that mean sir???code 12 and 11
The location on the OBD one center on a 1980 Buick regal is not under the radio. It's in the kick panel in the passenger side. FYI
how to remove plastic black panel behind rally cluster i have a rattle 1988 oldsmobile cutlass supreme thank you
Many hex head screws hold it in place all the way around.

Quick question is a grand am in that era a gbody
yes
Are you sure its not the alternator?
I can't explain that one. You will have to get a dealer service manual and trace the wire using the scamatic. Normally when a fusible link fries you have other issues. I believe the links are only in series with the large red wires in the system, not the brown wire. You will have to test that brown wire for any breaks.
If you have to give it gas to start it to charge then the voltage regulator in the alternator is bad. Replace the alternator and it will fix the issue.
replace it
Here's one for ya. My 86 GP has a check engine light on but im not able to flash the codes. Not even with a paperclip. Not even with a gm obd plug. And my cigarette lighter has power.
fuse
So if it just blinks the start code 12 only car is in good shape?
Yes
Paper clip is the way to go !
Please help me lol and love your videos they have helped me soo much thank you
helpful video
Glad you thought so!
I have a code 54, but I don't understand how to fix it. I can't find much on the net about what the problem would be and how to fix the issue. Maybe you could help. Thank you.
I see you found my video per my reply on your other comment. Follow the link in the description as it will take you to a site that tells you what each code means.
Classic G-Body Garage I have and found that there was no solid ground to my mixture control solenoid. So I'm just having issues with that. The only thing I can't find is what warning lamps should have a light bulb on my dash.
I went to do this last night but there's no metal electric connector in Port A.... Could I get just a new lil piece of copper or whatever and put it there or would I have to replace the whole part?? Any help would be appreciated.
If you have electric leads missing from the plug then someone messed with it. They are all the same.
could you make a video on how to fix the oil/choke light? it stays on no matter what. help me out!!! I have a 1984 cutlass supreme. works great but the oil/ choke light stays on. how could I fix this problem.
The sensor is bad.
I don't think Canadian models got these diagnostic computers. I've seen a Quadrajet with an electrical connector once or twice in the junkyard, but usually on 86+ with the next generaton small block design.
Yes Canadian cars were more standardized than US car where the US cars received different engine combinations.
Trying this in my 84 cutlass and the check engine light just stays on when key is in on position? And when running.. stumped.
Disconnect the battery for about 30 minutes to clear everythign out.
I have an 81 cutlass but my obd port doesn’t look like that it only has five holes and not the twelve
Does your car have a check engine light? I am not familiar with anything else other than a factory plug.
I have a 1980 chevy el camino and cannot find the location to find my check engine light obd where can it be located
Yours must be an early 80 model as GM didn't put OBD systems in all model year 80.
Got the paper clips, and did it. Read a 15. Which means coolant temp/low temp. What does that mean?
Temp sensor might be bad. Usually located on the intake manifold up near the water neck.
Either the thermostat is stuck open or you didn't warm it up enough for the test.
I have 1987 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme 4 door. It has the GM 231 V6 with the 2 barrel carb. Is it worth restoring?
Depends on condition. You have to be careful not to over invest. If you like it and its in good shape then give it some love!
I need ob1 reader for my 87 cutlass
Now is this the same for 78 cutlasses? my ports are not there. I need to look for them.
78 doesn't have a computer.
What does code diagnostic mode mean on 87 cutlass
Can I use a Ford paper-clip on a G.M. car or a Chrysler paper- clip?
it might cause a fire
And how would one read this 7long and 12 short flashz?
Subaru Bugeye 2001 model
2001 uses OBD2 system and those scanners will tell you whats wrong. There are no flashes of the light to count.
When I do this the engine light stays off and my cooling fans come on. Is this a wiring issue?
how to get code for a1989 vauxhall calibra 1.6cc 16valve
I'll be watching your video some more until I get it down pack lol so Thanks!! again
Correction my 1985 firebird has a obd 11 connection. I can use a scanner but the sad part is it rarely does even when there is a issue . Please do a video on 1995 Firebird formula lt1 check engine codes
