I went to do this last night but there's no metal electric connector in Port A.... Could I get just a new lil piece of copper or whatever and put it there or would I have to replace the whole part?? Any help would be appreciated.
@Jerry Coronado Get a code tester from Amazon or EBAY that plugs into the connector. It'll operate the light. It's small and causes the light to flash.
Thank you so much. By far, your video was the most clear cut, non confusing explanation on how to retrieve trouble codes. Appreciate it!
Thanks Brian! This little trick was awesome now I'm about to go play with my car and see what codes show up.
you are the man bro we appreciate everything you do for the g body community
Thank you Jose. I appreciate it and it means a lot.
What tike u wanna wanna leavr
Thank you for posting this!
incredible - will appreciate this forever
Thank you! Absolutely informative! Best of luck 👍🤝🤝🤝
This is great. What a good guy
Own an fbody trans am 82. This is what the car community needs to come back too is spreading universal knowledge and less blaming the manufacturer of a vehicle you don’t like for someone else’s problems
Awesome video Brian.
Thanks!
Hey Bryan, I love your channel even though I don't own a G Body (I own a 1989 GMC C1500, but in the near future I will own a G Body). Thank you for this video. It really helped me on my project!
Hey Justin. I appreciate you watching. I am glad my video helped get your truck fixed.
I just wanted to say thank you very much!
Thanks for watching!
Helped a lot thank you
Thanks man great video :)
Very helpful video. Thanks bro
no problem! Thanks for watching
great video, very helpful thank you sir.
Glad you like it! Thanks for watching.
Very helpful explanation! THX
Glad it was helpful!
Excellent video, thanks
Thanks great job.
I love it!!
Thank you man 😘💙
hey enjoy all your vids..... im about 2 trade my 80 elco for a 79 cutlass with a 455/400. what do u think about that set up in there
Fantastic Information
Very nice thank you
THANKS MAN YOU'RE GREAT!
Thank you for watching.
I used to do that on my 1988 s10 thanks for sharing man
No problem 👍
Hey Brian, I did this for my 85 Buick Regal and it did work but the only code that I get is 12. My engine light does come on when I'm driving though. Any ideas why this is?
Thanks
-Juan
great video!
Thanks!
Love your vids and I’m a regular in the Facebook group! On an 85 Cutlass with 3.8, I’m getting only the 12 code repeated over and over with SES light on when the key is turned to the on position. It cranks but does not start.
You have something else wrong then if it wont' start. A check engine light won't cause a no start. Thanks for your support as well.
I'm in the same boat, kind of worthless information if you're using for crank no start issue 😠.. find out what it was?
If you have a car with digital climate control just press off and warmer together. That’s how I can pull codes on my 83 Coupe deVille. Works on my dads 93 Park Ave too.
IT does!
Get a Snap-on scanner and cable and adapter and manuals. Use a G.M. -1 adapter. E-Bay has it!
Snap on is not the answer anymore : ) there are better tools out there now
Does this work on a 93 Cadillac Sixty Special- DeVille?
Thanks ahead of time🙏🏻
This is cool.
Excellent video. My 88 Cutlass Supreme Classic kinda acts like this. It starts and runs ok, idles ok, until the service engine light comes on then the idle just skyrockets. Need to get over to my storage unit to pull the codes.
Throttle position sensor. Thats what this cars issue was. I have a video coming up on how to replace it. Stay tuned!
I have a 1986 buick regal v6 231 and I'm getting error code 24 on the obd trouble shooting ... car stalls when I drive for about a mile or 2 when I come to a stop and some times it will bog when pressing the gas lightly . what should I look for ?
hey guy great video!
do you know of any place i could find a obd1 blutooth scanner?
is there such a tool?
ive searched high and low and unable to find one
i see a lot cool apps i could use on my 81 Cutlass if i had a scanner
Here is one.. ua-cam.com/video/sLrPRDh7K8I/v-deo.html
I have 1987 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme 4 door. It has the GM 231 V6 with the 2 barrel carb. Is it worth restoring?
Depends on condition. You have to be careful not to over invest. If you like it and its in good shape then give it some love!
thanks man hope it helps muy 1989 buick regal from Belgium
Hope so too!
My exterior door latch are a bit loose and using my key to unlock the door is very rough. It feels as if the key is about to break off in there. Any suggestions?
helpful video
Glad you thought so!
Did u make a video of installing chrome door rocker on 85 Buick Regal limited hardtop
Did not
Any idea how I could still use this method if I have aftermarket gauges?
Please help me lol and love your videos they have helped me soo much thank you
I have an 87 Chevy Sprint rebadged Suzuki Swift import. Would this be the same setup? Its a GM but really JDM. Did you have the engine running when the light flashed or did you have it on accessory power position?
Probably not being an import
Is it the same for B-bodies from '81
My '81 buick centruy ltd has a check engine light but the port seems different
Its the same.
Get a Snap-on scanner and cable and adapter and manuals. E-Bay has them! Get the G.M-1 adapter.
Hey Brian! Huge fan of the channel! Quick question.
I'm in the process of rejuvenating my 1980 Cutlass Supreme Brougham. Almost got the engine bay complete, this isn't my daily driver so I'm removing some emissions for appearances, she'll more likely just be a show and meet car. I noticed that the charcoal canister had a vacuum line leading up to a switch and two wires. Is that just a warning light to notify when the canister needs service? Or will it affect ignition? Is there any warning switches or sensors I should remove or bypass to eliminate a potential engine light?
Also, after watching this video I went to look for my OBD and I didn't have one. There's an ashtray in its place haha. Likely due to it being Canadian model I assume?
Thanks!
If your 80 was one built with an ECM then removing all of the emissions etc will trigger an engine light. You need to remove the computer with harness and pull the ECM fuse.
Will this work for all obd 1 Chevy vehicles I have a 82 caprice sports coupe. Check engine light only comes on when I hit highway speed. But my speedo doesnt work I heard the gears pop and it stop working
Speedo is run from a cable and gear in the trans. Flash out the code, might be the speed sensor because your speedo isn't working.
You are so awesome
Thanks
@@ClassicGBodyGarage I couldn’t get it to work. And I disconnected the battery for 30 min. 🤷🏾♂️
Does this video apply for 85 corvette c4 as well i have digital dash wondering if codes will still match up with decoding sheet attach to link below video
Yep all OBD1 are the same
Thanks also do they make obd 1 scanners
yes
power window switch 1986 cutlass supreme brom. driver side.
is it just the two screws and pop it out or disassemble the door?
Yes a brougham uses two small screws. No need to remove the door panel.
thanks
Hey I have a 1984 Oldsmobile 307 5l Delta 88 it's been in my garage for the past 5 years haven't ran it but this year I want to get it started so I bought new battery new spark plugs new coil but I am getting a crank no start no spark situation. Do you think the cap and rotor and spark plug wires could be bad that's the reason for no spark or do you believe the ESC computer is bad and if so where do you locate the ESC computer that would be a great video thanks and have a nice day..
Make sure the distributor is getting power first then go from there. The ECM is usually located in the passenger side kick panel or under the dash on the passenger side. I know on a Gbody its in the kick panel.
@@ClassicGBodyGarage yes I also forgot to mention I bought a new distributor found top dead center dropped it in where the rotor was facing number one cylinder I am getting power to the distributor from the red wire. I did the code test just now and it just keeps reading 12 12 12 12 12 12 over and over again do you know what that means can you please help me out thanks a bunch
@@ClassicGBodyGarage when I put the car on the on position the battery light , oil/ Choke light and check engine lights comes on is that normal? Still haven't yet started the car still a crank no start no spark situation just wondering is my choke light supposed to be on when I'm trying to start the car?
You can get codes on those cars by turning the key to "on" 3 times. On the 3rd time it starts blinking the codes. I dont know if you can get any more codes with a paper clip or not. But Ive been using the key method for 23 yrs on my 1995 Jeep.
Great video. When I tried to pull codes, check engine remains solid on. No code #12 and never flashes....any ideas? Checked my paper clip probe 3-4 times. Car does run and drive. Bad computer? 83 Regal
Computer might be bad.
I have a 80 coupe Deville carbureted and I found the green lead near the liter box . After many minutes of looking at It only gives me code 12 and nothing else. What can I do to fix this? Thanks
That means your cars ECM(or PCM as some also call it) is seeing no problems that it recognizes. By flashing you the #12 only, it is communicating to you that it(the ECM) is functioning as intended, but the absence of additional 'codes' other than '12' doesn't always mean that a problem(s) is not present- it just isn't causing an issue that the ECM can 'see' or detect yet(or ever in some cases. If the car is running ok, enjoy it- if not, other forms of diagnostics can be preformed by a mechanic/technician(although you should make sure the one you choose has experience in this area) doing tests the 'Old fashioned' way LOL.
I went to do this last night but there's no metal electric connector in Port A.... Could I get just a new lil piece of copper or whatever and put it there or would I have to replace the whole part?? Any help would be appreciated.
If you have electric leads missing from the plug then someone messed with it. They are all the same.
Go to read my check engine light and a previous owner cut the OBD port off on my 87 SS, beautiful!
Nice! Thanks for watching!
@@ClassicGBodyGarage
Do you happen to know how to clear the OBD1 code once you have read it and repaired the problem?
my codes on my 87 cutlass is 11 but what does that mean sir???code 12 and 11
What does code diagnostic mode mean on 87 cutlass
I have a 94 Chevy impala. When I jump These two pins it kicks on the fans but doesn’t flash the check engine light. Is there anything different I have to do for this model/year
If the port looks the same then it should flash it out
@@ClassicGBodyGarage I have 2, yes 2 OBD1 1995 Impala Super Sports sitting here and they both do the same thing John Nelson described. Something's different about the Caprice/Impala SS. I have read an actual scanner is required. Still researching.
The paper clip trick doesn’t work on 1994 GM vehicles
could you make a video on how to fix the oil/choke light? it stays on no matter what. help me out!!! I have a 1984 cutlass supreme. works great but the oil/ choke light stays on. how could I fix this problem.
The sensor is bad.
I have 83 el camino. I am getting a code 34 (MAP sensor). Vehicle seems to be running ok. It seems to run a little lean. Any tips to fix it.
The MAP sensor can be bad. Replace it. Clogged injectors can cause lean mixtures. Run fuel injector cleaner in the tank to clean injectors. Check fuel pressure. A leaking EGR can cause lean mixtures. A partially stopped up fuel filter can cause lean mixtures. A leaking carb. base gasket or intake gasket can cause lean mixtures. Mity-vac can check for leaking hoses. A leaking modulator valve hose can cause lean mixtures. Get a Actron CP9690 code tester to check codes. It works on OBDI and OBDII Ford, G.M., Chrysler, and Toyota. It has code-connect to diagnose codes. EBAY has it. It comes in a black pouch. It uses 4 AAA batteries (not included) under the rear cover. It is well-lit. 2000 up is auto-test. Below, you dial in the year etc. It checks live, record, graphing, emissions readiness test, ABS, SRS, oxygen sensor test, transmission code test, and MORE!
💎❤️ does this super simple paper clip method work on all older diagnostic/ground terminals? Have a t124 Benz from 1989 and it is a 8 pin plug? Just wonder what kind of power that codes are created not to give you an electrical shock while connecting the terminals with the paper clip? Thought, these codes can be recieved using a voltmeter? Thank you so much for sharing this helpful video. 🙏🙏🙏 Stay save and blessings from Germany
I have only done this on the OBD1 system on GM cars.
@@ClassicGBodyGarage thank you 😉
G-Body garage. I have a question for you I have a check engine light on my 82 Caballero. I forgot that I left the paper clip in the port and now the light doesn't flash anymore it stays on continuously did I destroy the computer? I don't hear the little rods in the carburetor tapping anymore let me know what you think please thank you.
Its possible yes.
@@ClassicGBodyGarage how do you go about testing a computer in these G bodies? If you put a early style carburetor on it and distributor to bypass a computer, will the 200 4r transmission shift right still?
So what if u do the papers clip method and the check engine light don't start flashing or showing codes for a 1994 Chevrolet caprice classic
I got a question for u guys I have a 86 oldsmobile cutlass supreme with a 3.8 engine, my check engine light comes on after the ecm got replaced and carb rebuild code is reading TPS my mechanic replaced it 3 times and still is reading tps do u know what else it could be
How does it run? What condition is the plug in?
@@ClassicGBodyGarage I have to let it warm up first because if I don't as soon as I put it in gear it shuts off
@@ClassicGBodyGarage what plug u talking about
It runs ok
I have a 1986 cutlass and my heat only comes out of the defrost vents and my blower not work on the high setting. Do you have a video about my issues?
87moe1 not yet but plan to. It's a common issue and people ask me about it. Make sure your vacuum source from the engine is hooked up.
I got it, it was the vacuum lines thank you!!
I have a 94 lincoln town car. Can u use this on that type of car
Any make and model with obd1, however with my 94 olds cutlass ciera I didn’t have the ability for paper clip method. I had to use the actron obd1 and obd2 tester.
I don't think Canadian models got these diagnostic computers. I've seen a Quadrajet with an electrical connector once or twice in the junkyard, but usually on 86+ with the next generaton small block design.
Yes Canadian cars were more standardized than US car where the US cars received different engine combinations.
Is the a and b port. In the same spot on all 80-95 ?
yes
The location on the OBD one center on a 1980 Buick regal is not under the radio. It's in the kick panel in the passenger side. FYI
Need help fining the obd 1 on 1984 toyota cressida
I would google that as I wouldn't know.
Classic G-Body Garage Sorry for my ignorance lmao first time using OBD1 scanner! But how do you get a code 24 from counting the check engine light? I can understand if the light blinks 13 times for code 13 or 24 times for code 24 but 1,2,1,2,3,4=24? Please help lol trying to understand on counting the flashes to get the code, I bought the GM OBD1 code reader does it explain how to read the flashes for the cods?
The light only flashes in increments of each single digit. I explain how to read the light flashes as well. 1, 1-2 = 12 You don't add them together. The light flashes once = 1. The light flashes twice = 2 and so on. 24 would mean 1-2, 1-2-3-4 = 24
Oh alright man I gotcha some times I get those brain farts every now an then hahah. I have a 1988 Monte Carlo SS and gonna try the paper clip trick on it then use the GM reader on my other cars. Thanks for the help explaining it very much appreciate it
Classic G-Body Garage Okay I just done my 1994 Camaro Z28 and when I put the paper clip in the A-B port then turn the key to on position it just blink once very fast and low and then nothing, does that mean my car isn't throwing any codes?? or could it just not work on my system? I read today that you can do it on the 1993 Camaro's with OBD1 but not the 1995's it's aggravating lol
Is the engine light on when you drive? If not then there are no codes to pull other than the "OK" functioning code which I mention in the video. An ECM will always show they are functioning. OBDII was introduced around 95/96 so the paper clip trick won't work on that system. Make sure your car is the OBDI and not the II. The shape of the plug is different.
Yes the check engine light is on when driving, I read the Lt1 F-Body form and they say 1993 is the only year on the 4th Gens you can use the paper clip on 94-95 like mine you can't. It sucks lol but I can do it on others with the OBD1 port just not 94-95 F-Body's unless it's a 1993
I hace a 94 buick park ave with a 16 pin data connecter but it is OOBD1how do I get the codes?
same way
Oil of peppermint is a surefire way to keep rodents away, put a drop in the corners of the hood and somewhere under the rear of the car. Also attaching a zinc bar electrically to the metal of the car acts as a sacrificial anode and stops corrosion. If only GM had installed this cheap part!
Moth balls can be used to chase off rats. Their noses are sensitive!
how to get code for a1989 vauxhall calibra 1.6cc 16valve
Trying this in my 84 cutlass and the check engine light just stays on when key is in on position? And when running.. stumped.
Disconnect the battery for about 30 minutes to clear everythign out.
Paper clip is the way to go !
Getting trouble code 41? Have a v8 5.7L
This is how I got the code of my c10
how to remove plastic black panel behind rally cluster i have a rattle 1988 oldsmobile cutlass supreme thank you

I have a code 54, but I don't understand how to fix it. I can't find much on the net about what the problem would be and how to fix the issue. Maybe you could help. Thank you.
I see you found my video per my reply on your other comment. Follow the link in the description as it will take you to a site that tells you what each code means.
Classic G-Body Garage I have and found that there was no solid ground to my mixture control solenoid. So I'm just having issues with that. The only thing I can't find is what warning lamps should have a light bulb on my dash.
i wish i would understand what u meen by the flash reading.. 2 blinks and then 1 and then u say a totaly diffrent number i dont get it really.. sorry to ask but can u tell me what u meen? 1-2- then code 21.. then another number.. where can i see what is wrong then.. i have a camaro gen 3. 84...
2 flashes then 1 = 21 or 1 flash then 3 = 13 and so on. I explain this in the video.
I have a 83 cutlass v6 231 i start the car and tried to read the codes with the paperclip i even have a obd1 gm scan tool but the light stays on and no codes can be pulled i dont think the computer is communicating i made sure its plugged in no loose connections all the light does is stay on
You read the code with the key on without the car running. If it doesn't go through the series of flashes with the scanner or paper clip in place then yes there are other issues. It might be bad.
I have a 1980 chevy el camino and cannot find the location to find my check engine light obd where can it be located
Yours must be an early 80 model as GM didn't put OBD systems in all model year 80.
Very helpful
Now is this the same for 78 cutlasses? my ports are not there. I need to look for them.
78 doesn't have a computer.
I have an 84 c10 and can't find plug. Truck was running like normal until it died backing into parking spot. I did some tests and no spark. I am going to check ignition fuse and codes, but there is no ALDL...
Your 84 may not have the OBD system. Trucks had different regulations. If you don't have spark then it might be the coil or pick up module. Check power to the distributor.
Coil tested OK I replaced cap and rotor (needed to be changed anyway) I also checked red wire and that is hot with key on.
Correction my 1985 firebird has a obd 11 connection. I can use a scanner but the sad part is it rarely does even when there is a issue . Please do a video on 1995 Firebird formula lt1 check engine codes
You right That's all you got to do ,, But what do you do when you find a code44 replace oxygen sensor That's an auto x-ray 5000 looking a box that come with and you'll find the OBD1 connector for it, then you can see what the oxygen sensor is actually doing
Got the paper clips, and did it. Read a 15. Which means coolant temp/low temp. What does that mean?
Temp sensor might be bad. Usually located on the intake manifold up near the water neck.
Either the thermostat is stuck open or you didn't warm it up enough for the test.
I have an 81 cutlass but my obd port doesn’t look like that it only has five holes and not the twelve
Does your car have a check engine light? I am not familiar with anything else other than a factory plug.
How do you clear the codes? Thanks
Disconnect the battery
When I do this the engine light stays off and my cooling fans come on. Is this a wiring issue?
How do u know which one is 1 and 2?
So if it just blinks the start code 12 only car is in good shape?
Yes
All the other codes got cleared but is still coming back to the tps
Can I use a Ford paper-clip on a G.M. car or a Chrysler paper- clip?
it might cause a fire
How can i download chevy obd1 code list
You can use the link in the description.
