I recently got a 3yr old OTTB, because I wanted something young to produce and take up the levels, so far he's been a total saint during the training that I have been able to do with him. But unfortunately a bit over a month ago he had an accident out in pasture, we're now a month post op, he's healing really well and even though he damaged his tendon during the accident he's only been really lame on the leg before surgery, now he's basically walking normal. We still have a long road ahead but it's looking like he will recover to be a functional riding horse and fingers crossed, will still be able to take me up the levels in show jumping and eventing.

Agree with Red Mare - totally sucks. Take your time, let him heal extra fully for best long term outcome. Even young TBs that haven't sustained a leg injury have been pushed too far too fast & years later, because of that, develop Kissing Spine & have their eventing careers over by 8 yrs old. So you've got time if you want a long term partnership. Let his spine grow & mature! Good luck with the healing.
I can't believe this is the first time you got on him after a year and only being race track broken before. What a good boy and what a good job on your side.

Hes such a good boy for a first ride since being race broke. I remember I was rising my boy around the farm late one evening cause that's the only time I get to ride. Mind you I last rode that night 3 weeks beforehand. Someone let off fire works not far from where we where. My boy just flinched a little and just had the most pissed off look on his face 😅 hes not scared of fore works, but they do make him angry and he had his ears pinned the whole way back home lol thank god I have a chilled boy

What a sweet boy! I like that even when he was spooky, he didn't lose his head completely and he came back to you basically instantly. Your mom did a nice job riding him too---I love how soft they became with each other.

My horse had over a year off because of lameness issues, his first ride back after he was sound a huge sheet of snow slid off of the metal arena roof, and he didn’t even flinch. I think I freaked out 10x more than he did 😂

I have to say, you sat Pogo's canter really well! Do you have any advice on how to do that? I have only cantered a few times so far (would probably have cantered more if it weren't for that I skipped a whole year after a knee injury) and would love to hear more tips!
