I think I like where tech is going except for them pistol 🔫 grip remotes. All the new brushless motors better range esc tech is fantastic. I think it would be nice if companies gave the old school kids the option to choose a new pistol grip or perhaps a cheap old school remote in the rtr kits. In a way the old remotes should be cheaper to manufacture. Some of the fpv remotes I use for drones are like 30 dollars US on eBay.

Nothing makes me feel older than when I hear a full grown adult talking about their childhood back in the 80's and 90's. When I talk about my childhood, I have to refer to the 60's and early 70's. Fortunately my new interest in RC cars takes me right back to being a teenager again. I love it.

Love seeing the Olds stuff, I was 10 in 89. I always wanted hobby grade rc but they where out of the family budget. Now it's so much better and actually more affordable to get started in.

    • @HaveagoRC

I was 4 in 89 so I got started a little later with tyco but I remember reading magazines and showing my grandparents(raised me and my sister) the grasshopper 2 and I wanted one so bad and budget wasnt the issue the issue was no one in my family knew anything about them and since it was a kit and you had to supply your own electonics and my family just had no knowledge of that so I had to stick with my Outlaw truck and my Ricochet car and my Hoverceaft boat thing. Was loads of fun. My first hobby grade was a stampede in 2010, blew thru motors, killed a dog with it(accident) and got rid of it, then 4 or 5 years ago I won an xmaxx 8s and since then I've been hooked again and i havent smoked anymore dogs, even tho I won the xmaxx I still dont buy expensive ones I either buy used or cheaper brands my favorite one right now is my Bezgar HM124 (HBX 901a) its crazy how tough it is.

I'm probably a bit older than you Tomley but I remember getting hold of a Tamiya catalogue in the 80's and looking at it over and over and over again, dreaming of owning a Tamiya RC car but it was never to be! I ended up with the Winch from Matsushiro which looked great but was the slowest thing on the planet! Many years later I got hold of a second hand Wild One and put a Metro 6R4 body on it! My RC journey had begun!

Oh man! I feeling really old these days! Born in 71, so embraced the early 80’s onwards. And being a technical man, in the world of electrical/electronics and voice and data, remember the phone before your parents phone, yeah, the one the size of a small briefcase, the transportable it was known as, used to think I was so cool, with one, looking back, perhaps not so cool! 😂🤣😂still, my RC’s was so much fun, yes 84 the Hornet, mechanical speed controller, 7.2v NiCd hump packs, and the Acoms radio’s with the different crystals…oh so much fun! Still I think modern electronics and technology has definitely advanced the run times we get and more smiles 😊😉😁

This made me think about my old Monster Beetle I got in 1986 or 1987 for Xmas. In those days it cost my parents a whopping 500$ in Canada. I just put that in the inflation calculator and it came up to 1,161$ in 2022... I never realized this thing was so expansive for it's capabilities, especially since the receiver would suffer from interference and just go haywire.

I was 9 and bought a tamiya madcap in 1990 with money my grandad put in an account a few years before. I remember trying to get it out to buy it and not having a signature from my mum to access it but when i did it was straight down the model shop. I only had enough money for the kit but not the radio gear so had to wait ages for my parents to buy the gear so i kept looking at it sat on the side dreaming about playing with it haha

I had a Tamiya Thunder Dragon and a kyosho optima mid back in the early 90s, the esc smoked on the optima mid. I sold them on to my brother and only started getting back into the hobby about 4 years ago, with a cheap A959-b, but now have a small collection, as well as having my kids hooked as well now. I thought the optima mid was fast, but a 6S 124019 with mod 1 is just well beyond!

Started with RC in 1978 with Kyosho and expanded with Tamiya Rough Rider in 1980. Simple but expensive Multiplex 2 channel controller which I don't have any more, also no servos. But still do have my 3 cars from that time. Started early last year again with RC together with my young son and initially thought about reviving my old cars but the actual ones are some much advanced that I will keep my treasures on the shelf and run with the new ones and I'm totally into Crawlers now.

But as far as controllers I had I believe the first ever pistol grip it was a square box pink in color and had a slot car mounted to the back and wheel on front it was crazy wish I still had it. Handsets have come a long way. I had a Techniplus from a few years earlier. It was all black and had a kind of T handle which the antenna stuck out of. I too suffered the MSC geting stuck in flat out forwards.
I happened to have stuffed up/burned out servos from time to time, but back then none of the manufacturers had come to the party as in having a standard between them. So plugs didn't fit certain Rx's etc. It was actually cheaper for me then at that time to buy a whole new Set, Tx,Rx, servos and battery holder thing.
Now everything fits everything, or does with a little persuasion, esc's are cheap and plentiful, it's all light and batteries last until I'm getting bored.
I do NOT miss the old days for electronics in RC.

So definitely rather be in today's days as far as technology. My only hang up is the the fact being so many companies only offer RTR. I really believe building a kit was was the main part of our hobby and if you did your job correctly you got the benefit of enjoying playing with it and if you didn't you watch people play until you figure out how to fix it and do it correctly. The only reason I'm saying this is because I think anybody that plays with RC cars should have a fundamental understanding of how the vehicle goes together. I realize that without the RTR movement our hobby wouldn't not even be close to where it is now and that's why I'm not completely saying RTRr's are bad I just wish more companies would offer us the option.

I grew up in a household where getting expensive gifts at Christmas wasn’t really an option. I always wanted an RC car but it was never going to happen. I had lots of wee job as a kid but all monies earned went to my mum & dad.
September 1983 I joined the army. After basic training when I was actually paid into a bank account, the first purchase I made was a Tamiya Frog - I bloody loved it.
Came home on leave early 84 to discover that my 8 year old brother had trashed it and binned it. I kept them with me on my travels fro then on, 2 cars max as I was living out of a locker.
Would I rather have the 80’s back ? The tours were certainly better. The lack of mobile phones / digital cameras probably keep me out of jail.
If I was to sit my frog next to an 8s infraction or 6s Kraton I would have binned the bloody thing myself.
Anyhoo - great topic as ever mate, I can certainly afford better RCs now as my kids are up and away.

In the '80s we used to have changeable crystals in our radio... and then little flags on the tips of our antennas to identify the frequency we were running on.
Everyone else, in the pits, were not allowed to use that frequency during a tined event.

    • @frankstumpf9228

I got into scratch built model boats in the late 80’s / early 90’s (bob’s board speed controller, 7.2v ni-cad) and then onto cars, ending with a 1998 Kyosho WRX Subaru Impreza nitro car… roll on over 20 years and decided to get the old Subaru working, the local rc shop sold me some new fangled 2.4ghz controller because it was cheaper than selling me a couple of crystals to replace the ones I had lost. I thought I was up to speed on modern rc cars until I saw your vids and now know how behind the times I am! 2s / 3s etc?? Motors rated in KV?? Fook knows, I got some learning to do.

Phil, Radiomaster just realized 2 ELRS receivers with PWM pins. (5 channels if I'm not mistaken.) And they make some fantastic radios as well...
So, who knows. Maybe soon we get a piston grip controller with ELRS and EdgeTx. 😬
Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊

Props for the Rick roll & the Nokia shout out.!
All you saw back then was teenagers thumbs blurring & their phone clicking away like a demented Dolphin as they perma-texted.!

Nostalgia can be a powerful infuencer, but I would argue that we're far better off now, RC-wise, than we were back in the 80s and 90s.
I only need glance at my collection of WPL and MN Models Toyota FJ40/45s to see that!

Cars and buggies really moved ahead leaps and bounds from 82 untill 86 then were basically maxed out. Only detail changes chassis or suspension wise after that. Got my first KO wheel radio in 83 and it had expo and endpoint but was AM. By 85 you could get FM and Cristal free sets for land use. Only 2 things have improved in the past 20 years and that is servos and batteries.
