Great video man. I'm trying customize my Transformers but want a candy apple red or Chrome eyes. I do like the Candy red you applied but I still see a hint of orange. Anyways thx for sharing and SUBBED!
For sure! Sorry about it looking orange. I've since found out it was an issue with the White Balance on the camera I used to record this with. Maybe I'll do an updated video on this in the near future.
Very nice work! As an aside, the clear red seems to keep a darker red share with less coats if you use a metallic gold, or dark metallic grey as a base coat instead of the silver chrome.
the blue & green look great to me, I have all the clears but not the yellow, I am about to start the Tamiya 1/24 Ford Gt but cant really use Lacquer paints due to the smell as my wife hates the smell of the glue, so dont think she will appreciate me spaying that lol, I am still very new to airbrushing so dont own a spray booth yet think I will have to pick up some plastic spoons to test with thanks for the video I think it will help me a lot..
I am a model car and truck builder. I am going to try your method. I just sprayed a model car with a candy blue. I decided to try an auto body paint that was recommended. I bought their basecoat, blue coat, and clear coat. All in aerosol cans. The cost was nearly 50 dollars. It went on nice and I really like the look and outcome. However I know I can do it cheaper. So I will try your method and see.
A model building channel I follow on UA-cam talks about airbrushing Tamiya paints. If preparing an entire bottle for airbrushing when you open the Tamiya bottle, there is a ring in the neck. He adds the thinner to that level and really shakes up the bottle to get it mixed. Like you he uses 20psi to spray. It thins the paint enough for good flow thru the airbrush and it doesn't overthin the color. Maybe for the red you may need to use less thinner. Just a thought.
FYI: on my screen, the red still looked orange. Colors do vary from screen to screen. I use these paints for window tint & to tint bright white LEDs for model r.r. passenger cars & locomotives.
Thanks for pointing that out! I tested the with my friends phone and the spoon does indeed look orange on his phone. On my phone and computer lcd looks red so I didn't notice.
Strange how you got the orange shade as I've just sprayed my first candy red, also the Tamiya & the first coat came out awesome, although my budget (first timer) air brush spluttered on the 2nd coat to deepen it else I was chuffed with the results.
super informative video, but if you have to spray three times as much paint you may be spending more money than just buying a quality paint. I would like to see a comparison of the more costly paint against this method
In the amount of time you're waiting for paint to dry between layers, how are you keeping the paint from drying on your needle? How does these stand up to being moved around on a kit when posing? Which topcoats work best to protect it all?
kimbito you shouldn’t need anything to protect your paint job unless you are playing with your kits like rock em sock em robots or are just absolutely terrible with painting.
Liked your video very much. I have Tamiya clear red. I'm going to do the same experiment, but with a gloss white base layer. i think the silver was throwing of the shade of red.
all it is is the normal clear with a tinting ink so sprays with no issues , the colour is weak though and for deeper sprayed reds in fewer coats extra acrylic tinting ink is required.....Tamiya developed it as a paint for tail lights on their kits , so excellent for that purpose but wasn't intended as a candy as genuine candys are much darker
Hi there ! I have a question : does it work the same with a hand brush ? I don't have any hair brush and I want to paint the green parts of my star winning gundam, I wonder if it could work like this...
So stupid question as I'm totally new to painting models in general but with the Black gloss would you then spray silver then the candy red? Or just Black gloss then Candy red?
question, why did you use enamel base with a clear acrylic top coat? why can't you use enamel for both base and top coat? what's the difference in finish between enamels and acrylics?
I've never tried it on that large of a surface but I think it should work out the same. Just be sure to use a nice top clearcoat to protect the candy finish as tamiya clears a relatively delicate.
I'm not sure the exact graduated beaker set I bought is still available, but you can find these sets relatively cheap on amazon, usually 9 - 5 usd. with prime shipping. Just search "5 Pack Glass Graduated Measuring Beaker Set 5ml 10ml 25ml 50ml 100ml" Hope this helps!

Gunpla Space Factory i want result like that on 6:14 minute ,green candy so i dont know english well only google translate what ingredients i must to have .....i work with acrylic paints ,this alll ,tamiya and model master is enamel? It is good on metal ,for example on brass?
Sorry, I've only sprayed model master enamel paint directly on plastic models. I'm not sure if it will stick very well directly on brass without a primer coat. Mr. Hobby Makes *Mr.Metal Primer-R* that is designed to bond to photo etched metals parts like brass. Its clear and has no pigment but this will allow regular primer or paint stick better to the parts. Hope this info is helpful!
@@gunplaf Thanks .One more question ... ...Enamel paint does not conflict with Acrylic? For example first will be primer, than metallic enamel an then acrylic paint.... and does Model Master enamel paint need a special thinner like Tamia paint
No... no you don't. It follows the same principles as candy paint. Using a reflective paint like silver or metallic silver adds depth to the color sprayed over it. Adding a candy over a base red would just make glossy red. This has been the norm for over 70 years in the custom hotrod painting scene.
@@pikazardcollectors1123 Thats why I said "it follows the same principles as candy paint". There really is no "must do" or "must not do" things in painting other than not mixing chemically reactive paints.

Thank you for that tip on the tacky coat. This is one of the few vids where its displayed carefully
With red candy if you start with a gold metallic you will get more of a red than if you use a silver base
Excellent video. I'm building a diorama of the Thunderchild battle from "War Of The Worlds" and this is extremely helpful.
Absolutely fabulous! Thank you for this video! :D I plan on doing candy coating when I get my airbrush, so this is a huge help!

Tamiya clear red seems to be a paint better used straight from the jar for brush details, and definitely not as a thinned airbrush paint.

great stuff just what i needed to know works great thru the airbrush.

Hi there !
I have a question : does it work the same with a hand brush ?
I don't have any hair brush and I want to paint the green parts of my star winning gundam, I wonder if it could work like this...
Unfortunately, when done by brush it will leave noticeable brush strokes and cure unevenly or even "splotchy."
@@julianmhu OK, thanks ;)
I dont think you're active anymore but if you are what are those little cups you have? I'd really like to get away from plastic disposable ones
Can you show a comparison of the spoon with and without the chrome base so we can see the difference it makes to the clear red finish?
Use gold under red.
that's why you need gloss black to achieve dark red tone.

i.STiLL.FUNCTiON black gloss , then thin layers of silver. Finish with clear color
Hello, please tell me what to do if you opened the paint in a jar and it dried up with what to indulge?
So silver chrome + any clear colours = candy tone?
Great work!
If you put black gloss then silver it will become red color as the silver color will be darker
Nice work buddy.

After the gloss black how long should I. Wait till I lay down the chrome ?
I was wonder if you can do the effect of using clear over gun metal
It can be done but the color will be quite dark. However you can probably use gunmetal along side a lighter metal color to create neat shade effect.
So how days you let rest

Candy paint has reflective flakes in them.
How do you keep clear from drying through all the coats ?
