How to build and paint a Gundam model

- So I decided to update my 2012 video series and shoot a video explaining every aspect of my modelling process on a HG Guncannon model, to make a more comprehensive how to build and paint a Gundam model video. I've been building and painting gunpla for at least 15 years but I still have found this video extremely useful. its really good to just get a refresher on things like this every now and then
This is a good tutorial, very nicely put and narrated. I consider myself an MG kind of person as well, but I have to say I'm surprisingly pleased with the HG The Origin line. Lots of details throughout the kits, nice color separations, and articulations. It was an absolute fun to assemble and paint them.

Fantastic video, great to see someone give this kit justice!
Diving straight into using an airbrush and pre shading doesnt feel very basic, but maybe a good video to come back to in the future
I just finished my first custom paint job on the Wing Gundam, used metallic paints and ended up with lots of scratches all over the model (Learnt that lesson the hard way). Watching this, gave me the idea to add some weathering a little later down the line, to mask those scratches on the paint job.

One tip I found super useful, don't be afraid to recycle ♻️. There are tons of buy/sell fb groups that are great for finding broken or old kits for parts. And usually they are cheap as well

Very good video. For me (only just returned after 10 year break) I only ever did snap build, basic decals and occasionally panel line. Some tutorials can come across as overbearing but this is good. I'll have to keep a look out for your book too.

Thanks for this video! Question though: What is the point in assembling it only to disassemble? Why not do the gluing, prep and paint, before assembling?

Amazing video, thanks a lot, i'm waiting to get my first couple of gunpla models, but my question is, i only have citadel paints and liquitex inks to use with my airbrush (GW painter here), but i'm afraid that the Citadel paints will get an strong mate finishing to the model, how can i make them glossy like those? is that what this "Alclad II" is used for? thank you.
Thankyou, you can hand paint kits of course, using an airbrush is optional. For a glossy finish you just need a good levelling paint like lacquer or enamel. Alclad II is a lacquer.

Excellent video and very helpful! Do you have any advise on how to avoid the paint from chipping like in the inner frame joints or moving parts? I guess this is more on an issue for MG kits with all the features those kits usually have. I’m scared to change the pose my gundams after painting as it might leave scratches. Thanks!
Thanks ;) I would use a tougher paint like lacquer and use a clear coat to protect it. It'll not be 100% scratch proof but it'll hold up for some careful movement

Thanks for the fantastic video, just a question, when applying top coat how do you make sure that the articulations don't get stiff with it? I used spray cans but when it dries and I move the articulation it kind of dries along the part and just like breaks and looks ugly
You could top coat each part leaving out the joints or topcoat masking off joints with masking tape. I don't really get this problem often as I use a strong lacquer paint which doesn't scratch easily

Do gundam pieces tend to have areas where you won’t want to paint under the alligator clips?
And does the movement of the model in posing scrape off the paint or are the tolerances such that it’s not an issue?
You'll need to attach clips to areas that will not be seen and if you use a strong paint like lacquer, scraping is no issue
when doing this process, can you still pose the gundam? does the sealing stage interfere with the movement?
hinge777 When sealing the seamlines you are just grabbing the outer armor and getting rid of a really bad looking seam line you can't take that part apart again but you can still move the joint as long as you don't put any of the cement onto the poly caps or the joints

This is by far the most detailed and well-narrated gunpla building + painting guide!
But I have some questions as I am going to start my first ever gunpla painting.
1. When removing a seamline, sometimes the in-between parts like the polycaps is going to be stuck permanently. is it okay if the pc parts got exposed to the paint?
2. I noticed that you do not sand the parts before priming. Is it okay to just directly prime without sanding?
3. About painting the weapons, do you disassemble each parts or paint it as a whole? I am planning to paint it as a whole but seeing that the clipped place would not be exposed to the paint, I was thinking that it should be disassembled and be painted separately.
That's all I wanted to ask. I would be really thankful if you could answer these newbie's questions.

Hey, can I ask you apply and thin the gloss varnish. I cant seem te get it right. It stays "sticky" and my panel lines dont run smootly. Thanks alot!
Try thinned enamel perhaps, experiment with ratios until it's right for you
Hey man, half way into the video and it’s very informative, but at 9:50 you see a shot of all the parts disassembled, as some one who never build one (yet) but looking into customizing, how do you know which part is what? In the sprue(??) you see what number it is, but all in one big hump of plastic i already seeing problems with recognizing part to put back, like what are leg parts and what are arm parts???
Once you've done a few I guess you just remember, you can always refer back to the manual too and work backwards
What about Master Grades? Do you still take them apart after assembly for painting?

When you mix up all the parts for painting how do you know the order they need to go back together in?? I'd be super confused lol. Great video btw
It's pretty easy to remember on a simple kit and you can always reference the manual if need be. Working by assembly also helps (torso, legs, so on) Thanks!
What about priming and airbrushing on sprue then put it togheter and sand it then paint over sanded areas with a brush? That was my plan I have never done gunplas but I have been doing afv modelling for some time now. Is this a good idea or is it better to clean all parts up and then prime/paint?
You would end up with pretty obviously inconsistent marks where nubs where I expect
@@Gundamuk Yes I did not go for this method. First I assembled the hole figure, then filled putty and glued where it was needed then I painted every part witch was not of the same colour individually with the help of my Airbrush and some clips from Manwah. Good results!

If there's three pieces and one inside the two others, if you remove the seamline between the two on the outside,the one in the middle is stuck isn't it? This is common like the head , with most of the details put inside and closed up by two pieces, how do you paint the inner details if you glued the outside?
You paint the enclosed part first, or mask off areas and paint it afterwards.
I’m new to painting Gunpla. Could you advise if it’s necessary to sand each piece before applying primer?

This is a very well-done guide, but as a total beginner who is about to do his first build, do you have a guide for hand painting an entire model? It seems like airbrushing is the community standard (outside of Lincoln Wright), but I know I certainly won't be able to invest in that kind of tool for my first go at this.

What do you recommend a beginner first buy for painting? Do you think I'd have to spend more than 25 USD?
Spray cans are a good way to get started, and cost effective if you want to start painting but can't quite afford an airbrush setup
Is filling in the seam lines absolutely necessary for painting or can I just skip that part?
If you're comfortable having it showing sure, it's up to you, but it's nice to keep it looking as neat as it can be ;)

I use 2, a badger patriot and a renegade velocity

I've had little experience with gundam markers, I would suggest trying out some different pens and seeing how they perform.
How long did it take?
A couple of days, including some waiting on paint to dry and glue to set.
I dont have the mental capacity to build gundam kits my brother does that for me but I do enjoy collecting them :)

I really want to get into building models, but investing money into tools means I need to make a lot of kits to make the investment worth it… but I’m not interested in displaying models, aside from a few favorites, I just want to build them haha.
I guess I could give them away to kids in my family or something. I wish I could just build a model kit and have it magically disappear.
There's no rule that says you have to invest in tools, just buy one you like the look of and a cheap set of nippers and see how it feels. The hobby only needs to be taken as far as you want it ;)
@@Gundamuk True. I just really like the idea of going beyond simply putting it together. Painting a model, and making it look really great.
There are surprisingly affordable airbrush kits out there around $50, they probably aren’t the best but it would be a good way to dip my toe into the hobby. Thank you for your encouragement.
@@Luschan I started out with a very cheap airbrush setup too, I think it's also a good way to help you decide if the hobby is right for you, and when you step up, do it incrementally, try a new AB, then over time a new compressor, and so on. All at your pace!
