- Relive the story of how Stanley Kubrick took over Elstree Studios for a whole year whilst making his iconic film, The Shining.
Now, nearly 45 years since its release, and all remanence of the Overlook Hotel’s sets thought to have been destroyed, one last filming site remains at the infamous studios.
The Shining’s Executive Producer Jan Harlan, Art Director Les Tomkins and Stanley’s daughter Katharina Kubrick, assigned the role of Location’s Researcher on the film, revisit the studio locations and share their memories about a film frequently voted the best horror film of all time.
“The production of The Shining has been well documented and analysed, but this is a story which has never been told. Pivotal scenes from the film took place in these areas, so going back to them felt like stepping into the movie itself.” - Katharina Kubrick.
Produced and directed by Paul King and narrated by multi-award winning actor Michael Sheen.
The project was made in collaboration with the Stanley Kubrick Film Archive, Elstree Studios, UAL, Warner Bros. Entertainment and the Kubrick family.
That place should be made into a museum.
Temple of Doom, The original Star Wars, Labyrinth and Dark Crystal was also filmed in the exact same spot
Agreed.
100%
Oh God yeah, preserved completely before anything else changes
@@AndyLeo Absolutely. I would love to spend a night in that storage room! 😂
The fact the pantry shelves still exist is pretty incredible.
I know. It is insane seeing that pantry room with those shelves still there. It is like stepping back in time. It gave me a lump in my throat to see that.
The music, the cinematography, the attention to detail in the set and costume, the mystery, the direction and acting performances -- one of the greatest masterpieces in film history.
I felt like crying because I grew up in the Overlook having watched it so many times with my dad and brother. RIP dad.
I got choked up watching this too. That pantry room with the shelves still there is like going back in time. The same with the loading dock that was the boiler room set. Unbelievable.
This place should be dressed up and turned into a place every fan could visit I really enjoyed this
Pretty amazing that the original shelving is still just sitting there in the storage room. Almost as if it's been waiting there for 45 years for them to come and visit, and for all of us to remember.
if we could see all the walls of the room then one or two theories of how jack got out would be answered, i.e. was there anotherdoor
That building is like an Overlook hotel all of its own. Filled with the ghosts of the kitchen and boiler room sets. Like they have always been there. And waiting for us.
Such a beautiful choice to use a pic of Stanley and Shelley at the end. Stanley smiling at her and all... ❤ Thanks for this, guys.
The only thing that was a bit odd was that it was the two of them, and they only said in memory of Shelley! He's dead too 😅😅
@@DanielStormBut Kubrick passed away 25 years ago. Shelley Duvall was only a few weeks ago. I think it was very relevant and a nice touch.
She has her arm wrapped around his as well. You hear much of the psychological trauma the filming of The Shining caused Shelley Duvall, but she still referred to Stanley Kubrick as "warm and friendly" years later.
@@ShelterDogs " the psychological trauma the filming of The Shining caused Shelley Duvall" is a total fabrication by online 'people'
Rest In Peace Stanley Kubrick, Shelley Duvall and Scatman Crothers.
And Scatman Crothers
They are legends by now ❤
And Joe Turkel.
God Bless Shelley Duvall. This is my all time favorite film, hands down! RIP Shelley and Stanley.
Also my favorite
When Shelley Duvall goes around the corner out of the boiling room and you can clearly see the (sliding) doors still being the exact same ones. It is just surreal to me. I love "The Shining", it might just be my favourite movie. Thank you for this documentary
This should be included in future reissues of THE SHINING on UHD and Blu-ray. I've been waiting a month for this thing to drop.
Dude, the tours of this facility could rake in quite some extra dough for the lot.
Been looking forward to this for weeks. Did not disappoint. What a one-of-a-kind genius Kubrick was. RIP Mr. Stanley Kubrick, Ms. Shelley Duvall and Mr. Scatman Crothers.
Thank you for graciously including Mr. Carothers.
He is gem 💎 and a legendary entertainer who is usually unrecognized in all of the surface level "rest in piece" 🧩 expressions.
😶😔🤨
@@blackpowerdiva4958 a very impressive actor too. Loved him in cuckoos nest too
@@johnkennethwiseman5460Amazing that he already worked with Nicholson, Kubrick knew what he was doing.
Thank you so much for this documentary! Hope this place gets a blue plaque. R.I.P. Shelley Duvall. 😢
As a huge fan of The Shining, this documentary made me very happy and made me feel nostalgic. Thank you!
Thanks that it was published here on youtube
Fantastic! A great way to remember Stanley Kubrick on his birthdate. What a brain-warp of a trip to take, seeing the locations then and now...how they were then, and how they are now. It would be unreal to actually walk through all of that, trying to visualize yourself in the movie and guessing which location hosted a certain scene. Also, I got a little teary at the end, with the then-and-now crossfades, especially when Shelley Duvall says "'I'm a Wendy!", fading into an echo.
(I got the 500th "like", by the way!)
So great! this is the stuff that legends are made of... rest in peace Shelley Duvall.
Love seeing a documentary on my favorite horror film of all time. It's sad that most of the buildings that housed the movie's set are gone, but at least one of them still remains. It was also really nice to have that dedication to Shelly at the end of it.
RIP Stanley, you made a horrifying masterpiece.
RIP Scatman, you created some wonderful memories for Danny Lloyd.
RIP Shelly, despite the harrowing experience from working on The Shining, you gave one hell of a performance.
You did a great job. I loved the 3D model of the film studio, and the perfectly matched shots including the precise camera movement.
And the trio walking through the space, commenting on things was just adorable.
Absolutely brilliant little documentary. This building should be given a listed status and protected at all costs. Whilst it looks like nothing from the outside, it contains some of the most treasured and iconic horror cinema locations.
The story of the carpet in the shed is bonkers and should be in a museum along with the bath and tables!
It was heartwarming to see Katharina, Jan and Leslie doing the Kitchen tour. Thank you so much for this video!
This was a real treat. The Shining is one of the very best movies. A masterpiece. To know that there are still parts of the set and prop still in existence, it to know The Shining lives on. This was simply a gift. Thank you.
The skills of these artisans are mind boggling. The real hotel that inspired the interior design is still there in Yosemite. It looks much like the movie.
I'm glad to see this spot is still around and mostly still the same as it was when it had been used in the film. Thank you for uploading this. Rest in Peace Mr. Kubrick and Ms. Duvall. Y'all are both missed.
I always go back to the same three horror movies every couple of years or so, The ring, Rosemarys baby and The Shining. Their influence on my life and my way of seeing things is so special, also every detail in this movies is fantastic. But the most important thing for me is the performances, Naomi Watts, Mia farrow and Shelley Duvall remain my favorite actresses. Thank you so much for this, it’s adds another layer to a great film, and I would totally tour the kitchen and the pantry if they set dress it btw 😮
Thank you so much for doing this documentary! I would pay for a tour as I’m sure thousands of fans would
Excellent feature documetary, my Mom watched The Shining when it came out, she has loved the film ever since, never forgot about iconic elements such as Jack Nicholson' stellar performance, Danny's trycicle or the rooms, when I told her that the film was made on set, she couldn't believe it. I think Kubrick and his team managed to create a movie with an atmosphere that it's not only uneerving (liminal spaces) but also nostalgic, nostalgia for a time we never lived, the 1920s (also the 1980s in my case).
Love to hear the crew theorizing about the movie, wether the ghosts are real or not.
Loved the in depth look on the kitchen! I really hope they keep this place safe for history. Great documentary! Such a treat to have this one come out now! Will always be my favorite horror movie. Rip Shelly Duvall, Stanley Kubrick and Scatman Crothers!
This was EXCELLENT! I loved every second of this! Thank you for putting this together.
Wonderful documentation! I love the crossfades from the movie scenes to the real location and the stories by the former staff.
Wow, this is absolutely incredible! Let's hope this building is kept and converted into a museum. The kitchen scenes were arguably the most pivotal, at least up there, and the fact that this building housed the kitchen is just fascinating.
This was really wonderful! Thanks for sharing - nice touch to have narration from Michael Sheen-ing :)
Thank you for a publishing this super documentary.I loved every second of it. I'm not sure where it is currently , but I strongly recommend visiting the Kubrick exhibition. I saw it at the london design museum a few years ago and it is truly tremendous. The range of artefacts from all of kubrick's films is extraordinary, and the book that accompanies it is well worth purchasing.
Loved this. Brilliant documentary. Brilliant film. Location definitely needs a blue plaque. Nice touch remembering Shelley Duvall.
Katherina to see us share a memory, although different ways, it was your kitchen table, from across the pond here in KY is amazing. Shining is nostaligic for me. Bless you and tell your mother thank you for her art as well. Shes also a blessing. Take care.
Absolutely fantastic! I love how they kept the table and put it in their kitchen.
Love this doc. The film set for The Shining has always fascinated me. How wonderful that parts of the set still exist (in their mundane ways). This doc showcases this very well.
Magical " yet bitter sweet having Lost people and knowing how much time has passed! Like Stanley and Shelley we all shall one day have our end credit's Roll"!👍🙏👍🎭👍🎭👍🎭👍🎭👍
Awesome. The pantry area looks exactly the same minus the tinned goods. As a huge shining fan this was a rare treat I also loved the boiler room area, the vibe is still very much there, brilliant.
Fantastic! And glad to know Michael Sheen is a fan...
Great work Paul King! Really enjoyed it. I worked at Elstree for a number of years on various films in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Nice to see the place again - I live in Sydney now - miss the place. Love the studio. Pinewood is great too, as is Leavesden - but there's something magical about Elstree...
Absolutely incredible thanks for creating this!!!! Long time shining fan!!!!!
Stanley and the actors had to do a hundred takes, and then Stanley had to sift through them all when he edited the movie. Astounding commitment to the craft.
He LOVED it!
Such a treat! Thank you for making it.
That pantry is still completely recognisable wow wow wow!
Very, very cool documentary on what still 'Shines' at Elstree.
Really enjoyed this, and I will be watching again and again over time. Such a classic film
The G.O.A.T. Happy B-Day Mr. Kubrick. You will always be alive through your works. Thank you.
Good memories, good actors, good workers and a good film.Thank you Stanley, thank you for bringing this book, this story, to the life.
And rest in peace, Shelly...
~Midnight, Stars and You~
Ive found and visited a few filming locations over the years. Its always a special feeling to stand somewhere by yourself that was where a famous scene was shot. You cant help but envision all the people, crew, equipment that was once there, and now youre there and have it to yourself. You could see the participants in this documentary felt that too.
Wow! The food pantry still has the original shelving in it? Really amazing! So for 45 years, what has that room been used for?? This is perplexing! Evidently the shelving was never in the way of other uses for that room all through the years - - how fortunate. And since the shelving was surely constructed inside that room, it could not simply be conveniently dragged out :)
🔥 🎥 🎞️ RIP Mr.Kubrick. 🦋Thanks for sharing!
In my opinion, perhaps the greatest to ever do it. Rest in peace, hero.
This video is gold…tribute to the Maestro Stanley 🙌🏻
I have always wanted to see and feel this set. I finally do. How amazing!
Damn, I want to watch the film again, for the umpteenth time. One of my all time favourites.
Absolutely fascinating. I love seeing the real locations used in films, but to see them for The Shining is just wonderful.
That was very nice. It reminds me of why I love the movie so much. Thank you!
Remarkable. Thank you to the Kubrick family and the filmmakers.
Katharina & Jan we love you with all our hearts. Thank you.
Wonderful documentary, a treat for movie location geeks. Thank you!
Thank you all and happy heavenly birthday Maestro Kubrick!
They should make a coffee table book of all the photos that were taken on set. I would buy it.
Endlessly fascinating movie and my favorite since the day it came out.
Awesome, thank you for this documentary. I love it!! Greetings from Argentina!!!
What a great little documentary!!!
When they found the pantry I lost it. Unbelievable.
Oh, I love this so , so much ! Just knowing that the original crew recognized the exact filming locstions in that building made my day ! Question for anyone that knows the answer for sure, no guessing please, lol. Was ANY actual fimling taken place at the ACTUAL Stanely Hotel ? I know not on the inside , Im just inquiring about the outside shots.
Thanks for any help.
This is amazing! They must preserve these surviving locations!
Thank you Stanley Kubrick for amazing wonderful mind, and thank you for leaving us clues, especially after the film EYES WIDE SHUT, now our eyes are finally WIDE OPEN!!! God bless Stanley Kubrick you LEGEND ❤️x
One of the best horror movies ever!
Splendid film that stirs memories of when I first saw The Shining on the day it opened in Los Angeles. I won’t say more here about the scene in the hospital that was removed after it ran through the gate just a few times. Legend is Stanley ordered it physically cut out of the last reel in the projection room of each of the theaters that housed a print and those trims destroyed.
Katharina Kubrick gives a hint of something about those frames when she says in this documentary that she won’t go on with what’s on her mind. It would be meaningful to see that scene again with the dialogue that Mr. Ullman and Wendy exchange, and from what I remember culminates with five words before the scene closes, and the film returns to the Overlook Hotel revealing the photo on the wall which remains in the current cut.
There is a video here that tries to recreate the scene with the surviving photos but using AI to make the bodies move and characters talk, it's not perfect, but it's the closest I have seen that ending come to live.
Amazing short. Rest in power Stanley, we love you eternally
Enjoyed this so much 😊
We miss you Stanley 📽❤
I think this is one of the best videos I’ve ever seen. Thank you.
Amazing! Scene overlays... amazing! Very cool look back and introspective on the locations. Wonderfully done.
Really enjoyed this as a lifelong fan of The Shining and Kubrick, and the split screen shots were really cool 🌟
This was fantastic! Please do more series on kubrick historical locations and props!
That was fantastic. Thank you!
It should be turned into a shining museum
Oh, how exciting! Thank you, guys. Thank you all so much. It's a wonderful 25 minutes. The Shining forever!
They should recreate the pantry with the door so we can all go live in that room for 30 minutes.
Thank you so much for this little nugget of film history. Happy Birthday, Maestro. 🪓🪓🪓
Really enjoyed that, thank you!!!
What an amazing documentary! Would be so cool to see something like that from other movies.
Awesome piece of history. Such a great gift to fans. I gasped when I heard the studio became a store!
Wonderful documentary 👌. I find it ... sad... to realise how time goes by ... Fascinating story behind an incredible film ❤
I considered Kubrick one of the greatest filmmaker ever, and have some of his movies in BD, including the shining, even saw it when it was released in 1980, I have to pick ten top horror movies, the shining would be in the top five, and I do believe this is by far J Nicholson best performance ever, and Shelley D best too, RIP Shelley and Stanley, thank you for big contributions to cinema history
This is brilliant, fascinating thank-you.
The Shining is currently showing on BBC iplayer.
I hope they keep that building, and perhaps turns it into a museum ❤
Fun little doc showing what's still around after all those years. Love the insight & banter from Katharina, Jan & Leslie. Thank you!!!!
Great documentary. I do hope it's kept. I must make my pigrimage to that Tesco carpark sometime and peek over the fence.
Loved every moment of this.
would give me chills to visit
Jan Harlan owning the Room 237 bathtub and calling it "just a bathroom" is wild.
Okay Jan, show me another tub that's THAT GREEN. I'll wait...
That was an excellent documentary ! Really enjoyed it.
This was so cool, especially the part about the pantry and where some of the items ended up. Thank you for this!
Brilliant mini docu! Amazing that they turned the studio sets into a grand hotel. It was very believable.
Bellissimo documentario su di un film leggendario 👍👍👍
Bravo! Thank you! I'm going to watch it tonight
