Funny that's the journey I took. I saw Before Sunrise the very first one in theaters on a date when I was in college. Saw this one in theaters as well on a whim as I was alone and was actually going to watch some action flic. I didn't even know they had made a sequel at the time. Saw Before Midnight out on DVD lol, yeah that's how old I am. Over the years and the time it took them to really write and make these films. I feel like I was catching up with old friends. This movie Before Sunset, is probably my favorite among the three. As these characters finally get together, like seeing friends you know should be together finally just be together.
hahaha I only found them a month ago and at first I was like "HOW did I miss these???" and then I was like 'Oh thank God I didn't have to wait to watch the other two!!!"
What an ending, I can't believe someone could conceive such a perfect closure. When she says "you are gonna miss that plane", he agrees as he caresses his wedding ring. You know his relationship with his wife is over, this is the love of his life
There’s something so absolutely magical about this trilogy - not because it’s s simple romcom but like two people who went their separate ways for a while and found each other again years later. Before Midnight was amazing too with its ups and downs of a normal relationship but that’s TRUE love not some fairy tale ending. By far one of my favorite movies
Just recently I remember the first I saw this movie. I was probably 9 or something in 2005/6. My mom was not at home, probably on business trip and my father sleeping in his room. I started half time somewhere when they were on the boat, and was strangely attracted to the title of the movie "love before sunset (in Chinese)" and thought to myself "what is this about, love? Okay let's see what an adult love relationship would be like". And I was slightly keen and expecting some kissing scenes or more would happen haha. Didn't understand much about their conversations by the time, but I was touched by how beautiful they were on the boat, the way they talk, crossing the cannel in that lay-back afternoon in warm sunshine, this I remember. The rest thing I remember is this ending, watching her dancing and he smiled back with stars in his eyes, and she slowly faded in dark, and there I was stoned, didn't know what happened but I KNEW there was something so strong here that you don't need word to describe. And to see this again and reconnecting with all those images in my head, is fancinating how they haven't changed and I have changed.
I remember something similar and powerful as this that happened to me when i was 24. She now is married to a very respectable and caring person with her a year old son. If there is anytime she were to leave that life and comes to me, id drop anything and everything to be with her. Unlikely to happen probably, but I am still happy for her and that special moment i got to know her
Celine: "You don't want to see me again?" Jesse: "No, of course I do. Listen. If somebody give me the choice right now of to never see you again or to marry you, I would marry you, alright?"
@@ashikana21 That's also the life before internet, and mobiles, life was much more to live 'in the moment' and trusting things would work out, which ofcourse was not always the case.
i literally cannot get enough of this ending. the fade to black gets me everytime. its so sublime and in a way surreal to me. they met after all those years somehow and in the end, the love rekindled and voila, fin. fucking hell. so good man.
Strange isn't it? Every man and woman loves this movie. We love this scene. We all want someone to look at us the way Jesse and Celine look at each other. ... Yet none of us ever do it.
"Most of us", not "none of us", I can tell you :) And even for those who are lucky enough to have all the conditions met in the course of events that lead to such memorable moments, there is still a price left to pay, if not anything else, the price of having to live with such a sweet memory kept inside your head, knowing the vanishing likelihood it would ever happen again .
I think the guitar part and the ending of this movie are the best scenes I’ve ever seen in cinema. Such melancholy and creativity to be captured with for me arguably the best dialogs I’ve ever seen in this trilogy. Couldn’t believe such factors could be interpreted and made up that great..
The ending of this film fucking _ruined_ me. I staunchly rejected a lot of romance films, and promised myself I'd never be one of those girls who went all gooey over something that happened in them, you know the kind. But the way he looks at her in the very last shot - at about 2:47 - demolished that completely. It's so understated but speaks volumes at the same time, and I just-- _gahhhhh._ This fucking film, man.
Mika Soze Ethan and Julie don't just play these characters. In a way they ARE Jesse and Celine. Both smart, articulate, funny, hopeful people who come to understand each other in a deeper and more meaningful way just in time.
i seriously feel you on this,in all honesty i dont often give a shit about romantic stuff but i have watched rewatched before sunrise over four times heck i was only able to bear watching titanic once.there's just something about this trilogy that's really beautiful apart from the fantastic chemistry between julie and ethan along with the dialogue.
This trilogy has to be one of the most romantic movies I’ve ever seen- not like the typical romcom crap but about two people who were truly destined together no matter how their lives took them in different directions in a while, then before midnight was brilliant in its portrayal of not just happily ever after but with its ups and down and complications but that’s TRUE love. These movies are truly truly special.
Dad took me to see Before Sunrise. I was about 14. This came out and I was overwhelmed and went after work alone one night. This made me sob my heart out. These two and Nina. Absolutely broke me
This movie improves on everything, it gives a sense of risk without ever making it seem like it has to be one night, and it’s because they’re both adults yet the stakes are the highest they’ve ever been. Honestly they’re the most alive in this film and it goes to show how a sequel can always be better than the first.
I think it's a stunning ending for it's subtlety and originality. They're both conscious of the impending flight, and yet they're relaxing, having tea and chatting about Nina Simone. It's like the elephant in the room which is never addressed, as if that by continuing to talk about anything else they're delaying the inevitable. The fact that they're avoiding it also testifies to how much each of them want to stay. It conflicts with Before Sunrise where they planned what will happen next and how they'll see each other, but here they're just living in the moment. There's no extraneous hollywooding, it's subtle and it's real.
Yeah. Jesse here did not know the bipolar and depressive nightmare Celine actually was. Celine is all sunshine and rainbows until the reality of life kicks in and then she is nasty, mean, and selfish.
ugh just the way he looks at her in this scene. it’s just makes me so nostalgic of something i’ve never even experienced. i love these movies so much it’s just such a realistic portrayal of life instead of another romantic comedy, not that those aren’t great too. i really felt like i knew them personally and i was intruding into their conversations, as if i was apart of their relationship too.
The ending says so much without being too much. She acknowledges he’s going to miss the plane but neither of them mind because they both want him to stay. So simplistic yet so powerful❤️

Foolishly watched this at work and now I'm fighting back a flood of emotion. The beauty in this scene reintroduces what it's like being alive rather than simply existing
Kudos to Ethan Hawke and Richard Linklater for fighting to keep this scene intact as originally planned. Everyone wanted the scene changed so that Hawke and Delpy kissed at the end of this scene and Linklater and Hawke knew it had to stay as is. They prevailed thank goodness and the rest is cinematic history. This scene (and the entire trilogy) is stellar.

Watching this movie brought back memories of not being able to fully express my feelings to the woman I love. I love this movie because it 120% expresses the sadness and tenderness of love.
This scene looks so real. He's litterally melting in front of our eyes, amazed by the woman Céline has become: tender, tough, creative, smart, passionate and unpredictable. He's reclining in her sofa, as if he's at home -because that's how he feels with her, all of the time. That is real love.
You know, there was once this woman, I could look at her for hours, and my heart would fill with joy just by doing that. She said she love the way I look at her. I wish she could read this. I miss her so unbelievably much.
I have listen to this song over and over. It never gets old and I never wanted to watch this movie. I wouldn’t know this version if I didn’t watch this masterpiece of an ending. Sometimes I just close my eyes listening to this song and it takes me away.
I think this is one of those happy accidents when a movie turns into a soul filled masterpiece. I bet even the Director was in disbelief about the magic in this movie/scene.
Hypnotically beautiful scene from the most poetic trilogy ever. I have watched the great Julie Delpy do her thing in this magical scene so many times . I don’t blame Ethan for missing his plane at all
I remember me watching it the first time on TV. I knew nothing abt this movie, didnt even know there was a prequel to it. I just loved the first 15 minutes where they were talking about life and relationships.....and gradually I realized this is a 'walking and talking' kinda movie, never saw anything like it before. The conversation throughout the movie was very gripping and thought provoking. Later, I saw the first part, and the 3rd one. This whole series is one true masterpiece!!
I swear, his desire for her was so palpable he kept twitching in the seat. Very well acted. Ps. Kudos for delivering a subtle, sexy and seductive scene without overtly trying to do so. Exquisite.
I just watched this movie today 20 years after it was published. I was on a short haul plane with 80mins flight. Towards the end, I wishes the plane flew slower. Who else is here in 2024?
The name "RICHARD LINLATER" is up in the screen for a full one minute and nineteen seconds. And yet none of us turns the screen off. None of us even notice that this is the longest credit for a directors name. Nina Simone's piano solo at it's best. We are all entranced. We are all feeling various emotions the entire time. Reflecting our own lives with that of Jesse and Celine. Completely forgetting these characters are fictional. This is pure art.
"Baby, you are going to miss that plane" "I know." This is up there with the all-time classic movie lines. Absolutely perfect ending right there, the third movie would not even have been needed.
This scene is impossibly beautiful always and forever, but it’s only now that I’ve lived a similar circumstance and left it that I can really appreciate what Linklater did with the last in the trilogy, Before Midnight. It doesn’t repudiate how real the connection in this scene is, far from it! But it does ask everyone who finds such romance in this scene to acknowledge that a real relationship can’t just survive forever on an intuitive connection and a few glorious moments, because people are complicated and loving one is complicated too. It’s work, sure, but not necessarily in the drearily Protestant way: if you do it right, and lovingly, it’s a joyful labor, one of discovering more and more about everything that drives the person you love and sharing with them more and more what drives you too. The whole trilogy taken together is the best representation of what it means to really love someone that I think I’ve ever seen, and I love this scene for being one of the high points, but seeing the low points depicted means so much too.
Best film of 2004 hands down. Best love story of the 21st century. Conversation between real people with a believable storyline and a fantastically plausible ending. This is my favourite of the trilogy. Julie Delpy stole my heart away in this film. Ethan Hawke was not this good since Gattaca (1997). Richard Linklater has made the ultimate love story of how fate can work miracles for two soulmates. Too bad social media has ruined this kind of romantic fiction. One day people will look back and see how even intelligent and mature people used to fall in love in an intelligent and heartfelt way. Guys please do not date any woman who doesn't like the Before trilogy 🤗🤗🤗🤗 Celine is my favourite female character in the movies of all time.

I love that. Its like you're growing up with them. Watching this series in a binge is definitely the wrong way to watch it.
hahaha I only found them a month ago and at first I was like "HOW did I miss these???" and then I was like 'Oh thank God I didn't have to wait to watch the other two!!!"
the third one was horrible though lol
this is poetry. pure humanity, silence, intimacy, love now in a real way, which is way underrated compared to fantasies we make in our heads.
Poetry at its deepest and purest shade
What an ending, I can't believe someone could conceive such a perfect closure. When she says "you are gonna miss that plane", he agrees as he caresses his wedding ring. You know his relationship with his wife is over, this is the love of his life
I mean come on !!!! It doesn’t get better than that !!
The way they're having a fairly innocuous conversation about Nina Simone and then he says, "I know." It all comes out in that final line.
Unlikely to happen probably, but I am still happy for her and that special moment i got to know her
Celine: "You don't want to see me again?"
Jesse: "No, of course I do. Listen. If somebody give me the choice right now of to never see you again or to marry you, I would marry you, alright?"
I can't believe that they basically committed that night and then left everything up to chance, it just kills me
@@ashikana21 That's also the life before internet, and mobiles, life was much more to live 'in the moment' and trusting things would work out, which ofcourse was not always the case.
i literally cannot get enough of this ending. the fade to black gets me everytime. its so sublime and in a way surreal to me. they met after all those years somehow and in the end, the love rekindled and voila, fin. fucking hell. so good man.
All of the time and space I sail right through, it still brings me back to these movies. Such splendid heartache spanning decades.
Because these days, talking to a girl on a train can get you a nice harassment suit. So many don’t bother.
It's out there, man.
@@alexman378 okay incel
My parents did!! It exists!
I think the guitar part and the ending of this movie are the best scenes I’ve ever seen in cinema. Such melancholy and creativity to be captured with for me arguably the best dialogs I’ve ever seen in this trilogy. Couldn’t believe such factors could be interpreted and made up that great..
The best 4 minutes in American cinema - still breaks my heart.
Mika Soze exactly same thing happened to me..
Mika Soze Ethan and Julie don't just play these characters. In a way they ARE Jesse and Celine. Both smart, articulate, funny, hopeful people who come to understand each other in a deeper and more meaningful way just in time.
Pablo Almeida Agreed. It helps that they have fantastic chemistry, too.
i seriously feel you on this,in all honesty i dont often give a shit about romantic stuff but i have watched rewatched before sunrise over four times heck i was only able to bear watching titanic once.there's just something about this trilogy that's really beautiful apart from the fantastic chemistry between julie and ethan along with the dialogue.
It's ok to be seduced by beautiful honest chemistry. These films are films for people who don't like mushy love films.
I could watch this a million times. And then a million times more.
Dad took me to see Before Sunrise. I was about 14. This came out and I was overwhelmed and went after work alone one night. This made me sob my heart out. These two and Nina. Absolutely broke me
Simply the best movie series I have ever seen. Still waiting for the fourth.
I am as well. Even if it ends with one of them dying, I want to see the conclusion of their story.
This Triology is not Movies, These are Memories for me.
I've always loved how he says "I know" as if to say "you're damn right I am."
This movie improves on everything, it gives a sense of risk without ever making it seem like it has to be one night, and it’s because they’re both adults yet the stakes are the highest they’ve ever been. Honestly they’re the most alive in this film and it goes to show how a sequel can always be better than the first.
Simply one of the five best film-endings I ever saw. Superp and so weel played :D
+skywise19 What are the other four?
+skywise19 Yeah, what are the other four ?
and the other four is ?
Can you explain to me why it's so amazing?
I think it's a stunning ending for it's subtlety and originality. They're both conscious of the impending flight, and yet they're relaxing, having tea and chatting about Nina Simone. It's like the elephant in the room which is never addressed, as if that by continuing to talk about anything else they're delaying the inevitable. The fact that they're avoiding it also testifies to how much each of them want to stay. It conflicts with Before Sunrise where they planned what will happen next and how they'll see each other, but here they're just living in the moment. There's no extraneous hollywooding, it's subtle and it's real.
the way he looks at her...
Yeah. Jesse here did not know the bipolar and depressive nightmare Celine actually was. Celine is all sunshine and rainbows until the reality of life kicks in and then she is nasty, mean, and selfish.
@@omarsandoval6743 "Ruin"? I don't see it that way. I'm just exposing pretentiousness.
@@omarsandoval6743 By the same reason you are commenting right now.
@@omarsandoval6743 Oh, Ok, well, to inform. If some one can disprove my assessment then I learn from them. Simple.
ugh just the way he looks at her in this scene. it’s just makes me so nostalgic of something i’ve never even experienced. i love these movies so much it’s just such a realistic portrayal of life instead of another romantic comedy, not that those aren’t great too. i really felt like i knew them personally and i was intruding into their conversations, as if i was apart of their relationship too.
"Now you're here now I know just where I'm going
No more doubt or fear I've found my way"
"Baby... you are going to _miss_ that plane".
Not a warning. A request. Almost a command.
She has no idea how much he is enjoying this moment.
It's so obvious by his smile and look in his eyes that he's in love. Such a cute scene.
The ending says so much without being too much. She acknowledges he’s going to miss the plane but neither of them mind because they both want him to stay. So simplistic yet so powerful❤️
Might be my favorite ending to a movie ever.
There could not be a more perfect movie ending. This song was written for this, I swear
In my opinion, the single best ending to a movie in the history of cinema.
Really? He left his wife with kids for this woman. Its a superficial scene. Jesse said that he left his wife because of how she sings. Jesse here did not know the bipolar and depressive nightmare she actually was. Celine is all sunshine and rainbows until the reality of life kicks in and then she is nasty, mean, and selfish.

I'd have easily.....EASILY done the same thing as him. Miss that plane. Don't let her get away again. Perfect ending to this chapter.

@@la_paulita_84 Have you watched Before Midnight? Also, do you think was right for Jesse to leave his wife and son for another woman? I mean, I think you do not know what you are talking about. You are just romanticizing it.
Luke Gibson who hurt you 😂
Run lol
This is basically the most romantic scene i've ever seen
Foolishly watched this at work and now I'm fighting back a flood of emotion. The beauty in this scene reintroduces what it's like being alive rather than simply existing
I couldn’t imagine having to be in that situation😂
Kudos to Ethan Hawke and Richard Linklater for fighting to keep this scene intact as originally planned. Everyone wanted the scene changed so that Hawke and Delpy kissed at the end of this scene and Linklater and Hawke knew it had to stay as is. They prevailed thank goodness and the rest is cinematic history. This scene (and the entire trilogy) is stellar.
Perfect ending for a perfect movie!!
I don't think so. Jesse left his wife with kids for this woman. Its a superficial and selfish scene. Jesse said that he left his wife because of how Celine sings. The best ending in the whole world!
Ending ? That's just the beginning :D
This is the best love story I’ ve ever seen
👌🏻
I don’t blame Ethan for missing his plane at all
The most original ending scene in the entire life of the romantic movies
I will never forget this movie!
God dammit UA-cam.... now I'm crying at work. Forgot how much these films moved me.
Rewatched this film twice in the span of less than 24 hours... my actual favorite ever
One of the best scenes in cinema history
It had been a long time since I couldn't help but clap for a movie in my apartment.
I thought the first one was good, but this is one of the best movies I've ever seen.
She’s not saying “babe you’re gonna miss that plane you better get going” she telling him “you’re missing the fucking plane” 👌👌
Literally she gave him and order in that moment
This film got me out of a relationship. Thanks.
Keeps me out of one, lol
How so? Lol
The most impactful words of any movie for me is "I know"... imagine telling that to somebody who hadn't seen this
quite possibly the most perfect ending to a movie ever...
The way it ends... Feels like this movie has never ended but keep going on and on in every audience's head
Sometimes I come back to this scene when I feel lonely, and it gives me hope
I swear, his desire for her was so palpable he kept twitching in the seat. Very well acted.
Ps. Kudos for delivering a subtle, sexy and seductive scene without overtly trying to do so. Exquisite.
For sure, these two are living the five best minutes of their lives.
Fun fact: only 70 or so minutes pass since them meeting and this. Put on a timer for 70 minutes and it makes you appreciate how short it is
I just watched this movie today 20 years after it was published. I was on a short haul plane with 80mins flight. Towards the end, I wishes the plane flew slower. Who else is here in 2024?
This trilogy is the best
i wish i could have experienced this one in the theater.
i was still a kid at the time haha
The name "RICHARD LINLATER" is up in the screen for a full one minute and nineteen seconds. And yet none of us turns the screen off. None of us even notice that this is the longest credit for a directors name. Nina Simone's piano solo at it's best. We are all entranced. We are all feeling various emotions the entire time. Reflecting our own lives with that of Jesse and Celine. Completely forgetting these characters are fictional. This is pure art.
whoever chose this song for the last scene....kudos.
"Baby, you are going to miss that plane"
"I know."
This is up there with the all-time classic movie lines. Absolutely perfect ending right there, the third movie would not even have been needed.
I remember watching this for the first time I cried. This was just so abrupt and emotional
God I love this movie. One of my favourite ending scenes ever.
Guys please do not date any woman who doesn't like the Before trilogy 🤗🤗🤗🤗
Celine is my favourite female character in the movies of all time.
“Baby, you are gonna miss that plane.”
Him smiling, “I know.”
On of my favorite cinematic scenes 😭
