In this episode we rescue a 1997 2gb Eagle Talon Turbo TSI AWD. This DSM is a barn find, it was sitting unused for more than 2 years somewhere in New Mexico near Santa Fe. Our plan is to rebuild the car and turn it into the ultimate daily driver.

i rescued this car from the desert and the plan is to restore it to a fast, turbocharged, awd daily driver. i took a road trip from denver colorado to NM. i rented a car in denver, drove it to new mexico and returned it there, then drove the new car back home all in the same day. i got good gas mileage but the car will definitely need some work to be reliable.
I know the feels!!! I found a gem of a Talon 3 months ago for $3,500... I did everything possible to attain my 92 Talon TSi. No rust and completely stock. Only downfall was that it is an automatic. I drive it everyday and love it. It will be worked on this winter and will not touch these MN roads... GOOD LUCK
The frist gen auto transmissions can hold A LOT of horsepower if you're going for a high power build, so that's one plus of the auto.

In high school my friend had a new one of these all blacked out. I will never forget riding 5 deep high as a kite doing donuts in a wet parking lot. That thing spun so fast I thought we were going to roll over. It was a fun car racing the 5.0's too

Being a dad is ALMOST the best thing ever. I have it on good authority that bolting on a new turbo is the best thing ever. Better than puppies and kittens, star wars marathons, and even better than gazing upon your newborn child for the first time!

Nice find! I just got a bone stock 1997 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS-T w only 82k miles on it. It's in incredible shape. Paint is 95% perfect, just a few small chips and dings. Interior is 99%, almost no issues. Needs new brakes, rotors, wheel bearings. Burgundy red color. I paid a little more for mine $5300. But it's a holy grail find. I'm so pumped to get this thing back to 100%!!!

I'm from Vermont, first time being here, I'm almost to Santa Fe. I was going to say coil pack for the miss, and yes sounds like maybe just a wheel bearing. Yeah, I was surprised how fast the little T25 kicks in, and then how fast it completely peters out lol. It's completely out of breath by 4-5k lol.

Check your ignition coil too. I had a cracked one on my 94 Eclipse. The spark jumps from the coil to the chassis and causes a miss usually at lower RPM.

Congrats on the find!!! I just found a 90 TSI AWD in Colorado Springs for 1200 the owner stated it was a piston ring but when I pulled the valve cover it turned out the be the head gasket. The car was def sitting for a while and was completely stock. I finished the head gasket job in about 3 days due to only myself doing the job. And after that the CAS had some cracked wiring so I repaired that with some solder and heat shrink and ill test it tomorrow to see how it runs. Turns out once I started to watch your videos Willie is a friend of mine we met when I came into the DSM scene a couple yrs ago! I will def have to meet up with you sometime soon!!

I love what the DSM community has become. A lot of 2g's were bought up during the fast and furious era and got riced and beaten up, but now that era is behind us what we have left is a niche but very enthusiastic community of people that genuinely love their DSM. Met a few owners so far and they're all mature, humble and really chill guys to talk to and they just ooze love for their ride. You picked up a nice piece there, too bad clearcoat is gone on several panels but hey...a TSI for 1500? Not bad at all!

Did something similar back in 2005 when I lived in Dallas. Drove to Littleton, CO and bought a stock 92 Galant VR-4 and drove it back That was an interesting trip filled with sleep deprivation induced hallucinations.
Recently I did pretty much the same thing for a "stock" survivor 92 Dodge Stealth R/T TT, I drove to Grand Junction,CO from Wichita, KS and back for the stupid car. Ironically I had to sell my rusty, clapped out 98 Eagle Talon TSi/AWD project to free up room for the Stealth. :(

Nice find! My 90 TSi has 124,000 miles on the clock. I wish I could find a 2G like the one you just found! That's a steal, a little maintenance, new paint job and BAM! some tasteful mods, some ECMLink and that will be a NICE ride.
Please do the timing belt! I've lost 2 engines from that. One from a new pully seizing and jumping the belt. Easy way... Cut the belt in half the long way.... Take outside half off. Slide on new belt. Cut off old remaining half. Slide new one on the rest of the way. Glad to see another dsm saved 😍 also if the 7bolt is same as the 6bolt. Also do the balancing shaft belt. Had a friend loose a motor from that little belt breaking. Tangled in the timing belt. Slipped a few teeth. Bang...

My 97 Talon TSI FWD manual 82k miles gets 30+ mpg on hwy. It is 100% factory stock. It had been parked for 12 years before I started replacing all maintenance items.
Picked up a mint 1gb awd with 57,000miles on it. Its too nice for me to drive so its setting in my barn. If i dont pull away from my volvo s60r my dsms will end up being barn finds in a couple years...the volvo is so comfortable, quick, smooth, awd, 6-speed manual and is the ultimate sleeper. The s60r killed my dsm fever... bad because im pretty vested in the 1g awd dsm. Lots of spare parts... hoping to get back to my (2) red 1gb awd cars this winter.

nore easter blizzard of 96 one of my teachers had one of these, school had a long gravel road, we passed once on a wide curve he just had it hanging out throwing snow with all 4. It was that bright blue and his name was chad lol.
Damn that’s a pretty sweet deal. These cars are for sure rare now, I sold my clean 2G Talon for $5500 last year and have yet to see another on the road since.

Edit 2: IGNITION COIL PACK!!! My 98 GSX used to miss all time, also below 3k RPM. And neither plugs nor wires would fix it. These cars are finicky about their ignition coil packs. I went through 2 of them before I shoveled out the money for an OEM Mitsubishi one. Have never missed since. Gentleman's bet, I counter bet your $100 its the ignition coil pack
Well you win the bet, because it wasn't the ICM lol. I tried replacing the coil packs too, but I did the cheap versions and the problem is still there. I'm going to try swap injectors next. The problem is intermittent so it's a pain to find the cause! I'll definitely check out Truckers Atlas! :D
@@VelocityLabs Aww balls. Yeah definitely check out the injectors. Clean them up make sure the seals are good and the mating surfaces. Take a long flathead and hold it on the injectors and listen for consistent tapping to know they're firing right. It's pricey but I think this was the cheapest I found it. However it's brand new and completely eradicated my miss. Good luck man!

@@VelocityLabs Oh! My girlfriend's car had an issue like this once that drove me insane. Double check all the injector connectors. If the contacts get bent out of shape over time they won't connect properly, but they'll make contact on and off. At high RPM they tend to work for some reason, possibly arcing.
Crazy i have 1997 eagle talon im pretty sure is in same paint color which looks like p88 cayenne red pearl and picked up with 118k last year bone stock... been workin on it for past year now i got it looking real nice in my opinon would put a picture if i could .... im so excited you got one hopefully you do some work on it for us for future refrence

Deff want to replace the fuel filter mounted on the firewall passanger side...kinda a pain in the butt. Check the IAC too they almost always go bad on the 2G. Glad to see another DSM getting saved.

I am curious as to how you came across this car? Seeing that it wasn't listed in your local Craigslist do you spend time searching multiple locations for these types of cars? Id love to hear how you go about finding things like this. I am willing to do road trips like this for a great deal such as this.
Also, if you ever replace your shift knob from your 1g please let me know. It's my favorite knob and would love to have one for my project.

You can see it at 0:53 - I google search "1997 talon site:craigslist.org" which searches all of the craigslist cities. I also use the craigslist "save search" in option which emails me a specified search term gets listed, like "1998 talon" for example.
Could the EGR system be clogged with carbon either on the exhaust side or maybe the vacuum lines are intermittently clogging?

Possible! I'll be deleting the EGR system shortly, so we'll find out.

Nice I'd clean the throttle body with carb cleaner and remove the intercooler and flush it out with gasoline there's likely some oil in the intake piping, maybe spark plugs, and of course boost leak test lol.
Do you think it may be the octane giving the computer trouble. I notice it was 90 octane. I'm use to using 93 sometimes 92. DSM's are peculiar cars...love them but they are peculiar. Also you might want to check the spark plug gaps. the rattling is probably the driveshaft carrier bearings. Put some lubricant spray (silicone lube)etc. on the bearings. If the noise goes away then you got your answer.

That miss is plugs and replace the coil pack, get NGK 6’s. For the trans change the gear oil and add synchromesh
Plugs, wires, coil packs, and ICM have been replaced. No change. I'm gonna swap injectors next.
🤔 hmmm have you checked all your grounds ??? Sometimes a bad ground can cause this, I fought the same gremlin with one of my talons and it ended up being a ground.
synchromesh is absolutely the worst thing you can add to a dsm transmission. It not only eats the brass synchronizers but it breaks down quickly and causes undue wear to the transmission. Need to add a mix of redline mtl and mt90

Also you might want to check the turbo if you feel like a studering feeling its 20 year old car pretty sure its not in good condition my would do that but more constantly just a pointer ... this car looks just like mine when i got it thats awesome
I have some eagle talon center caps from my 1990 TSI wheels. Not sure if they fit your 2G or not. If they do you can have them!
