    Using the scissor jack from the car is genius. Worked perfectly!

    The magic in this video starts around 3:50. Using a scissor jack to lower the rear arm is a stroke of genius.

    This is an outstanding video! I would have NEVER thought of using the BMW OE jack to separate the upper and lower control arms to provide more clearance to extract the old and especially insert the new spring! If not for this video, I would have been too scared to put any stress on the suspension components. THANK YOU SO MUCH! This job was a breeze...took longer to jack the car up and remove the tires that it did to replace the springs...and it saved me over $200 labor at the garage! ONE CAVEAT, (possibly for a future updated version?) PLEASE be very careful when purchasing the replacement springs, as they are color coded with a small paint marking (blue, green, pink, red) for specific vehicle fitment (mine had a pink marking on them). These springs are spec'd by the dealer, based upon features included on the car (e.g., sunroof, all wheel drive, power seats, etc. I shopped around online and found all sorts of variations, at different pricing. In the end, I called a buddy of mine who works for local dealership who told me that he had to use the specific VIN number from my vehicle to make sure that he sold me the right part. Don't just put any spring on, the one you choose must meet the specific strength and flex requirements of the manufacturer. Use the wrong springs and you may be doing this job again at a later date! Makes me wonder about those lowering kits and how good they really are for the car...

    Thank you for the vid! I have changed the springs very easyly thanks to your vid. Badly you made a mistake, putting the spring upside down. The smaller opening must be up and the bigger - down. On 5:27 is clearly visible that the opening is too small to fit and this is the reason the rubber thing does not enter inside as it must. I think it's not very healthy for your shocks.

    Thank you for this excellent tutorial, it made the job a breeze once I figured out how to get the car on jack stands. I only have one floor jack and it's impossible to use on the rear jack point under the diff. Thanks to a suggestion left by LeverThis on e46fanatics I was able to lift from the front jack pad and this also lifted lift the rear wheel on the same side off the ground allowing me to put a jack stand under the rear pad. I then could remove my floor jack from the front and put the spare wheel in its place as a precaution. This freed my floor jack to use for supporting the spring when disconnecting the shock. Hope this will help someone.

    Just completed a coil spring replacement on my 2003 325Ci! This is my fourth broken coil spring since buying this car (used). Placement of the scissor jack was a little tricky. I put it slightly ahead of the spring-just like in the video and it worked out well. Thank you!

    Well this is great, sadly my antiroll bar link broke during the process... maybe it was mistake to have both rear wheels
    on jack😢

  • @mondeo984
    @mondeo984  11 років тому +1

    It's a weak design on the E46. They break because the rod from which the spring is manufactured is bended 'too much' at the ends. You can see in the diameters at both ends on the springs they are small and the rod is bended very much.
    Don't think other manufactures can do them better. Making a spring is the same procedure ....heating up the rod and twist it around a dice.
    But it's really easy to replace the rear springs :-)
    I would only buy OEM springs because others might give a wrong height

    I´ve just changed my rear springs on a 325xi. One of the sway bar links broke. Not sure if this happened before the operation or if they were ready to go. Just saying, use cation. Maybe a spring compressor would help?

      Glad you said that. This happened on my previous E46 a 328ci when doing the springs on it a few years ago so I would definitely be very cautious of this approach. I now have to replace the rear springs on my current E46, a 330i and will definitely be disconnecting ARB drop links.

    This video was very helpful to me. The springs do in fact have up and down. The loop at the end is slightly larger at the bottom. Also some have asked whether it's necessary to change both springs. I'd say yes. Springs and shocks are always replaced in pairs. For my car the spring p/ns are not shown on RealOEM when I enter my chassis number so it would be virtually impossible to find a single replacement to match the old spring. A new spring of the same spec will never be identical to the old spring anyway. I had one spring break similar to yours, one and a half turn from the top. When I removed the other spring it turned out to be broken too half a turn from the bottom which was very hard to see when it was installed. The springs I removed were also not identical to each other. One was constant wire diameter and the other was tapered.

  • @mondeo984

    yes sure. After unbolting the lower shock mount, just unbolt the upper mount too. But you have to cut in the foam cover to get into the upper mount.

  • @mondeo984

    It's not that simple :-)
    You need a bit more force to press the rotor downwards. On E46fanatics you can see it's a two man job to press the rotor down and remove the spring. But using the jack you can do it yourself

    Hey I have a 2001 e46 sedan 330d 135kw and can't seem to understand or find what length springs I should buy to replace the old ones, the car has m sport suspension from factory and I don't understand what length springs would fit, I want it to be normal height when applied with 17" or 18" wheels so it doesn't look slammed, my country has to bad roads for low car and I don't like the look of it. Ty if somebody has the answer to my question. :)

    Good vid in general but a few points Re DIY;
    1/ ALWAYS use axle stands or some other secondary support, never work on a vehicle on a jack only… always assume the jack will slip, sink or fail and what happens then?
    2/ All work on springs involves stored energy that if released can injure or kill, IF the scissor jack slides out and your head is next to it….. could be like a hammer blow.
    3/ Elastomeric suspension bushes are designed to work over an angular range, which if exceeded or forced (especially on older bushes) can damage them… the way around this is to loosen all bushes, do the job then tighten the bushes AT NORMAL RIDE HEIGHT (with weight on).

    • @mondeo984
      @mondeo984  2 роки тому

      1 Nope. I have access to a prof. lift if I need to work UNDER the car. See some of my other video to see the lift.
      ua-cam.com/video/1yldRzhsuk4/v-deo.html
      2.There is almost NO tension left on springs when a E46 is raised from the ground. Max 60-80 Kg tension.
      4. Even though I don't earn my living as auto mechanic, I actually went to the only tech school in DK for auto mechanics many years ago, and I passed the class for auto repairs :-)
      5. Since I'm from DK and not the states, I don't use glasses nor gloves for normal jobs like this. Not that I mind guys from US do, but this is just NOT common practice in Europe.
      BTW: I would never trust my life to any kind of jacks, jack stands etc. Therefore I DON'T put my body under the car with this c.... stands. The lift I use is actually inspected every year with stamps and everything, which is required by DK law.
      I got tons of neg feedback for using the tools I use. But thrust me, There are thoughts behind my work.
      I don't give warnings etc. because in DK we are not taken to court for mistakes made by others. Auto repairs are not for everyone and yes there is always a piece of danger left, thats why no one shoudl do repairs if they don't feel comfortable with it.
      I went to tech school in 1982, but havn't forgotten anything and done my own car ever since then.
      Have a nice day

    Hi, awesome video thanks. ive just fitted my new spring. the new spring sat proud on top of the bottom rubber pad, you just sat the spring on top, so i assumed the spring would settle when driven. my wheel arch is still sitting an inch higher than the other side.. i can only assume it is because either it is the wrong spring or it still has not settled on the bottom rubber pad (ive only driven it 400metres) my car is 06 e46 320d msport coupe. part was ordered from euro car parts using reg. any help much appreciated... should i poke the bottom rubber pad through the spring before fitting?

    Thanks for the video. Im a total amateur bit finally managed to replac my rear coil spring with this video as guidance. 2 comments from.about minute 4 to 5, using the screw jack to bend the wheel down to remove and replace the coil springs:
    - first, serious safety hazard to keep your hands in a position where they can get squeezed, the screw jack slipped for me twice which jerks the wheel back up again
    - second, I always manage to get something wrong, amateur as I am, this time around I used the screw jack on the left side (towards the rear rather than towards front), basically while trying to bend without the jack slipping, while doing so I broke the metal piece right behind the coil spring, that is connected to some transversal bar.
    D**n, probably going to be more expensive replacing that than what I saved on changing the coil springs myself :(
    Edit:
    Ok so I think I found that it's the rear sway bar link that I broke on one of the sides. Due to bending down the wheel too much, and from the "wrong side" compared to what is done in the video. But I found it quite hard to bend down enough to fit the new spring. Anyway. That piece is cheap, but the job is to complicated for me. Will need the help of a professional to fix that mistake.
    Good video nevertheless! ;)

    Just done this today. Only I don't have 2 trolly jacks, so I used a bottle jack then lowered the car till the rear shock was touching the bottle jack, undone it then raised it back up, lowered the car back down onto 4 bricks & a block of wood, then I was able to use the bmw jack to prise open & remove the spring. Job done. Thanks for the tutorial.

    After doing my car using this video I am happy for the clue to use the cars jack. First as a safety observation you should have a stand in case the first jack fails. Second you need to be careful when inserting the spring should the separator jack slip. On the driver side you need to be careful to only separate until the spring perch contacts the driveshaft. On the opposide side with the longer axle be careful to not damage the brake hose when using the OEM jack.
