YES light Bulb moment I've been struggling with this all week learning my friends song so I can play with him this weekend I've got to say this has been one the hardest things to get to strum only on 2 & 4 so I nearly gave up so I thought I'd you tube it thinking someone has a way of doing this and here we are I've been learning from you for years your a great teacher thank you. My friend said if I master this it will make me a killer rhythm guitarist with lots F songs and Country music when playing in a band etc.
I just wanted to tell Justin how grateful I am for all the work and passion he's put into giving us all a great guitar education for free! I urge you all to consider buying his products or donating on his website. I am not a paid spokesperson, just an appreciative fan of all he's doing!
Justin, I just learned my 2nd song from you. and my hubby Turning 50 this year and it's a bucket list. I have part of Every Rose has it's thorn, part of lean on me and have uploaded the very simple Happy Birthday for my hubby's 50th birthday. (I made your version into what I can play, sorry but not up to your beginner speed even but trying) Do you have an anniversary song? it's our 25th anniversary as well.
Thanks for posting, Simon. Great video. What a player. I loved her whole philosophy around the groove and rhythm. Thank you too, Justin. I'd never heard of Emily before.
Thanks for this. I'm almost ashamed to say I'd never heard of her, but will now check out her recordings. Such a shame that she passed away the way she did, but then there are an awful lot of great musicians that can be said about sadly
Instead of using 60 BPM and counting like that, could you not go to 120 BPM and count on every beat? I suppose that is what you're really doing when you count this way. Great lesson, Justin has such a way about him that make it interesting and fun at the same time. A rare gift.
In jazz usally beats 2 and 4 are emphasized. So its quite useful to get a strong "one TWO three FOUR" feeling in your head rather than the normal "ONE two three four" metronome beat. Its all about the offbeats if you want to get things funky/jazzy/cool/interesting :)
Thank you. I'm learning and it feels good not Really looking to be the next George Benson but enjoying myself and hearing the chors coming together. Thanks again for the video s they are really helping me to be more confident in playing. Peace
Justin, can you or anyone tell me how the 2 & 4 concept would relate to soloing over the chords. I actually did see the Emily Remler video a while back. The video is a great resource, however, I'm still a little confused on the 2 /4 thing. I've always understood beats 1 & 3 to be the strong or down beats, and beats 2 & 4 to be the up beats. Supposedly, you want to play chord tones over the strong beats. This doesn't make sense to me either, lining up the sequence of your notes making sure you play a chord tone over the 1 & 3. Not only does this seem like a lot of work (for me) but when soloing you typically don't start on the 1 or 3. It often starts before or after,. Am I right or way off?

All The Things You Are, great progression. I will be expanding my play on this one!
Hearing all the things you are in 4/4 again after 2 months of playing it in 7/8 for an assessment is really trippy.
The Emily Remler video this came from is on UA-cam: Emily Remler Bebop and Swing Guitar
Yep, she was an incredible guitar player, I'm still stealing her licks :)
