Justin is one of the few guitar teachers on UA-cam that doesn't brag/show off about how good they are at guitar, and how grateful we are to be able to learn their lessons for free.
Hey Justin, I just wanted to take a moment to express how grateful I am for your guitar videos. I've been scouring the internet for quite some time now, but I always seem to come back to yours. Your ability to teach with empathy and a charming personality truly sets you apart. I've learned so much from you and what I appreciate the most is that you have a knack for breaking things down in a way that's easy for beginners like me to understand. Your patience and calm demeanor is refreshing, and I never feel overwhelmed or stressed when learning from you. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and skills with us. It's truly invaluable.
Been playing rock/pop since 1967. Even made a living at it for about 20 years. But, just got interested in learning some jazz. I've seen some of your other lessons. Just wanted to tell you that you're an awesome teacher. Thank you, Justin.
Greatly appreciate the addition of chord DIAGRAMS superimposed on the video briefly. Trying to find the correct chord diagram on google is very confusing if your knowledge is limited. Thanks for all your instruction.
When he plays the 7th chord, it's totally not obvious that he's bridging to get to the 2nd string whilst dampening the 5th string? How is that even possible?
@@timetravellingtoad Play an open G chord without the 2nd fret on the 5th string and you will see its very possible. Rule of thumb(or finger) ....Higher strings usually play the melody. Everything else harmonizes. Use your ear to guide the fingers.
Plus he is placing fingers over strings that he is not fretting but making it appear so. Some of these guys, and they mean well, seem to think everyone is at their level of Guitar playing.
This has cleared up so much confusion. Sticking to one note and learning the chord shapes off that one note instead of jumping all over the neck helped tremendously! Thanks Justin!!
Its a testimate to how great Justin makes his videos that videos from 7 years ago are still extremely good quality and useful information. His videos helped me a lot get really started on how to learn anything
After looking at a number of videos , I came upon this one. Trying to learn jazz chords through trying to play a song " Autumn Leaves" wasn't working. I could work out the finger positions, but didn't understand why. A little back ground, I played in a band in High school, in the 60's, keyboards, and played around a little with the guitar player guitar, and have pretty much always had a guitar, but didn't truly understand the neck. This opened my eyes a lot. I can do the usual stuff, open and bar chords, and I can hear tunes and work out a lot, but jazz is what I like, and would like to learn. I recently acquired a nice "jazz box" , so now I'm committed . Thank you . jeff
Thank you very much for these videos. I have always wanted to play "Round Midnight" on the guitar and you are helping make that possible. I have been playing for twenty years and the way you teach made me realize that I have tons more to learn. If I am going to play "Round Midnight" well, I'd better learn how to play jazz all together. Never thought I could play jazz, thank you for giving me the steps to make it possible.
Justin, thanks for this simple but awesome lesson! I've played mostly folk chords over the years but when I started using the chords you provided in this lesson, a whole new field of creativity opened up. I really, really appreciate it. Take care.
I have been wondering, how people play jazz, once I found your video, I am truly grateful...thank you for sharing not only your beautiful lesson but your passion to inspire people..
This is amazing! I always played m7 and maj7 with root on 5th string cause never actually get into learning that shapes with root on 6th, but thanks a lot for simple and understandable explanation. Fun can start now :D
Man I’ve used your website for years and now that I am working from home, I finally have time to look up the videos. Extremely helpful and fun to make sure I have all the chord forms ready
Thanks Justin, great information for beginners like myself. I'm having a lot of excitement in learning the basic jazz chords - in understanding their constructions - especially the chord progression for "Autumn Leaves", which I know will open other opportunities in enhancing my guitar skills and knowledge. I have a greater appreciation for jazz and the many guitarist; performers, teachers, and instructors like yourself, who have paved the way in making it a little easier for folks like me.

Priceless lesson, thanks so much Justin. Cant thank you enough. May I suggest something that would be HUGE help to some...(like me) Adding little screens down there with a box and dots, just so we can get a clearer idea on the fingers and positions...I know it's asking a lot, just saying, may be you can have someone else do it for you? I watch your videos almost every day to learn these chords and would have helped a lot when I started.
could you tell me what is the chord progression you play in 1:11? i tried to catch it frame by frame but only heard the bass and highest note, can't tell what chord they are
Hi Justin Love the way you present your lessons, very clear and easy to follow. Just one request, and this also goes to many of the comments that people have made in the replies below. I teach guitar, and ALL my students from the age of 9 upwards are required to learn the open string notes and the notes on the E (1 or 6 they are the same but you will use 6 more as your root notes) and the A strings. I teach this in the first lesson and within 30 minutes all my students get it. How can you play a barre chord if you don't know the notes on the E or A strings? So my advice to everybody learning guitar - learn the notes on the fretboard. It's not difficult guys. Keep up the good work Justin.
+Sonny Cannon That is the name of a record company here in Montreal that started off Diana Krall. I used to do their graphic design. Dunno if they're still around.
fantastic. thank you. when you said what number fret it was with each string, that helped me learn. I wrote it down and they became clear. for instance, gmaj7 = 304430. got it now. thanks very much
Very nice video, like 7 out of those 10 chords i have already used because i found them dorking around on The fretboard and they were very pleasent to the ear, now i have them named. Thank you!
This is ratherly and utterly excellent stuff (as always) - thanks Justin. I await with bated breath, trousers and jam for the forthcoming Jazz Standards lessons you alluded to. Everything I know on guitar is self taught, and I've only been playing for a handful of years, so these videos are so so helpful until I can get an instructor. Thank you for the amazing videos as always!!
Justin. I have never played that G dim7 as 5:48. This is going to come in handy on songs like Fly me to the moon. Great for comping or chord melody. Some things that help me is knowing how one string relates to another. The guitar 4ths G C F Bb. Allows me to quickly see the minor third Bb.
