- Ernests Gulbis.. one of the Greatest talents in Tennis History... On his day he managed to beat Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and came very close to beating Rafael Nadal twice on clay courts! His best achievement was reaching the Semi-finals of Roland Garros 2014 & Wimbledon.

Gulbis had a freakish fun in 13/14- his win at delray having to qualify in, then having to qualify into Indian Wells where he ended up making a deep run in a stacked field just to fall a tad short won’t be forgotten- the guys normal rally forehand was HEAVY
Shows how its truly about bringing it hard each and every day. That’s what Federer, Nadal and Djokovic do
Its not that simple ...
A lot of great talents are derailed by injuries and injury management ... Gulbis and Janowicz are constantly mired in injuries, they never managed to catch a break to build any momentum towards maintaining a stability of great form for a prolong period of time ..
You also need some luck to gather the right people to support your training, health nutrition, mental motivation ... having stable personal relationships also helps to maintatin focus on the prize .... its a matter of luck to get all these elements together to work in an optimum efficiency ...
@@88feji
Absolutely! Beautifully said!
@88feji Also, it costs money to be at the top. Gulbis has wealthy parents, so he had no problem with that.
Gulbis is one of my favorite players. Very talented but could never figure him out. It always felt like he was capable of beating anyone but at the same time capable of losing to anyone.
This guy was sooo talented. I guess he changed his forehand about 100 times though haha
But his 2014 forehand was epic
Still the best match I saw live in 10 years at Roland Garros Gulbis- Federer (Round 3, Federer was eliminated in 5 sets). Gulbis was unstoppable that day.
Saying "he came very close to beating him twice" means he actually won one and almost won another. What you mean is that he twice came close to beating him.
Really feeling sorry for gulbis😥.. he is damn good man..!! 5,0 vs nadal on clay..!! Really appreciated man.. you deserved more.. but hard luck man..
I do not know why he changed his forehand like that. I thought he would go really far just keeping the style the way he had.
@@rayadisurya7343 No one likes to change their style, especially a forehand change that big for Gulbis. Yes, he always had a powerful forehand, but it was inconsistent. After he changed his form, even though it looked awkward and had less power, at the very least he was comfortable hitting consistent forehands.
@@thedragontactic but telling by his ranking, it got worse after he changed his style.
@@rayadisurya7343 Sorry, but I do not use rankings as a measuring stick. In fact, I do not actually care about rankings unless it plays a factor (such as world tour finals). Otherwise, I care about the potential of the players rather than their ranking.
Give you an example. So Kyrgios ranking is 39. I don't know about you, but do you really think he is the 39th best player in the world now? See the nonsense?
@@thedragontactic You twist the current level and the potentiel/talent.
It is wrong to say that ranking is not a good way to determine if a player is good or not.
For exemple, Kirgios is a very talented player and can be very dangerous even for the better players.
So why is he "only" 39 ? Men this guy is so irregular. It is his fault if he is 39. His current level is not as high as his talent and this is it.
appreciated the video because i'm also a big fan of Gulbis'es tennis!! great video as well.. well done bro!
That intro gaves me the feel he's retiring.
Alexander Kings I will literally cry when he does.
@@commondirtbagz7130 I'm in tears while watching this..
@GTS you are the kind of guy that nobody likes at parties
Yes. Gulbis is my favourite tennis player after Hewitt.
@GTS 😯
I never liked so much his game, but always admired his ability to change strokes direction in the last moment before hitting the ball. It's noticeable how much Nadal, one of the best of all times reading opponents intentions in their body language, struggle a lot trying to figure where is gonna land the next ball and so many times he has to correct his first impression doing a great effort. Very rare to see something like that.
I can't believe my eyes. That is one point to bagel Rafa in the first set.
Gulbis was playing a challenger event in Australia a couple of days ago at 33 years of age.
Fognini was up 6-4 5-0 and 40-0 with 3 match points, this year at Montecarlo
Talent to be is one step...But to be are champion is one of the another story. Many people are talented but realized step to champion is the magic that's failed most of them..
Good stuff. Love the idea of the post-intro commentary.
Was he really one of the biggest threats to Rafa on clay though? Certainly a significant threat. And there are after all so very few that we can say that for. So yeah. Agreed.
@Richie'sBackhand I wish Coria dint have such an injury-ridden career. Could've had an epic clay rivalry with Rafa
That "lightest drop shot" wasn't that light while landing around the serve box base line.. ;D It caught Rafa off the guard though making him lose balance. Otherwise it had been an easy winner for the Spaniard. Kudos for that.
THIS IS my true FAVORITE-Ernest GULBIS, from Latvia.
When i first him I recognized SHEER GENIUS...above ALL THE REST. But he is so temperamental....Always thought what might have been. Still my favorite player GOAT of men's tennis.
Betty Benitez actually Kyrgios as well is super talented and with different work ethic could win all 3 a series of times. And with good work
Ethic to improve play he can beat Nadal a series of times. Even like this and it is a big challenge for Nadal to beat Kyrgios.
How can a player be great when he never won anything?
@@innosanto Kyrgios has won nothing. Not one Grand Slam.
That fckin forehand is so awkward yet effective ahhahahaha LMAO!
Gulbis is on the comeback this year
Your intro perfectly fits the legendary Rafa bro ☝
@Leaving Blank he's been tested thousands of times and came up negative. moonballing is a lob fool. Nadal hits the world's greatest buggywhip shots. Do you even play kid? lol
@Goran Matulovic What was his mentality?
@Goran Matulovic I see
@Goran Matulovic Thanks
@Goran Matulovic Aha. I forgot he's Latvian. The name initially sounded French to me. 👍
You could make Jerzy Janowicz next. Very Gulbis-esque player with even higher possible ceiling, similar on court demeanor and injuries that completely hindered his career
And I practice with him in 2 hours... Scary...
He disguises his ball projection in his windup very well, similar to Federer in its deceptiveness, though done very differently. One of the keys to Fed's success.
Great videooo
Gulbis and Monfils were my favorite players
What Gulbis did was brilliant in both instances, but you can see how Nadal was cleverly placing the ball in uncomfortable positions making Gulbis tired and frustrated and then inducing unforced errors out of him. Nadal knows the value of the win on both counts.
Nadal is great because he is not Invincible.
He just knows how to stay that extra bit, fight relentlessly and come up with solutions in a creative way in critical moments and most importantly he converts those points. Unlike other players, he doesn't give up on shots which keeps him active and flexible and most importantly he doesn't get frustrated even though he loses out on points where he runs all the way from behind the baseline to the net or reverse.
Ernests Gulbis is a very hot/cold player but when he's on fire, he's invincible.
Gulbis was hitting backhand like Djokovic 🔥
If this guy could have tapped into his full potential, i think he could have had a better career than players like Murray or Wawrinka. Huge potential.
Hi,wivorn.why wasted????what did he do??and where he is now???
Exactly! That's what I was wondering? Why wasted?
Having skills may be a advantage.. But understanding opponents strategy and over coming it is key point to win.... King always a 👑.... RAFA....
Wow, did you see the corona ad on the net. Nadal did inform us about the danger!!

Will is everything!"

@@guilhemeoliveira3307
I don't know who Batman Begins is, but it's a very nice saying
You realize, yes, that "almost" winning two matches against Nadal is the same thing as saying he lost two matches against Nadal . . ? That said, Gulbis is indeed one of tennis' biggest could-have-beens -- the questionable work ethic coupled with a lack of a substantial coach who might have pushed the boy into greatness are perhaps the two most telling marks against him. Regardless, a talented player. Cheers!
His coach was actually Gunter Bresnik (who now coaches Thiem)... he is not to be overlooked as a coach. The fall of Gulbis was of Gulbis's own creation. Shame really as I was a huge fan
You're lacking some basic verbal comprehension skills if you truly believe that "almost won two matches" = "lost two matches".
If we're only concerned about the end result then sure, there is no difference between two phrases, however, "almost won two matches" implies that it was a tough match and a good performance by Gulbis. "Lost two matches" does not give any insight into the close rivalry in the match.
kw19193 he played nadal in very tight matches and actually destroyed him in some points.
@@variszarins no one will ever remember the one who loses.
So OP got some point there specially if they didnt reached the final... No matter how hard was for Nadal.
Soderling was the only one who defeated Nadal on clay... On RG where he is "invincible".
@@KyoFanDuB “no one will ever remember the one who loses” doesn’t this video existing immediately prove you wrong lmao? Also, I always remembered Gulbis as the guy who gave Nadal trouble on clay in his godlike 2010 run. So yeah, you’re wrong
Talent does not make winners because the win comes from hard work and severe hunger, Ernest is not a waisted talent but a great champion and that is enough for him and for us what is sure . Ernest is going to do great after tennis.
Nadal is a great champion and athlete, but true talent is so much nicer to watch (i.e., federer, ,gulbis, etc.).
@@td866 "Hard work is talent." - Ion Tiriac 😉
@@ralfaux6187No it isn't. You know talent when you see it. Hard is necessary for all top players, but doesn't make up for limited talent.
@@td866 I think the point Tiriac was trying to make was that the converse is true as well...that you can have a boatload of talent, but if you're not willing to put in the work you may not win the cup in the end, so to speak. We can't know how much work Gulbis or Tomic or Malisse or any of the brilliant underachievers out on the tennis tour put in. But their reputations do precede them...Before I forget, do you really believe that Nadal is just "athletic" & "hard working," with less "talent" than Fed, Novak, etc?
one of the best
Every new match i watch from Nadal, i believe each time more, he is the most unique player it would ever be in the history, a mentallity it's just....really...i cannot find words...i love that guy. For me just seeing the facts, he is the most incredible player would ever be, for me he is the GOAT. No matters how good it's your day, he will find the way, and doing that 15 years, it's the only player to maintain in the top 5 for that long...this is the real greatness. Totally respect for Novak and Federer, they are so amazing and true legends as well, maybe in the future someone can copy a little Novak or Roger, but really copying Nadal it's just non-sense.
m kan the lack of time at number one compared to novak and fed and rafas lack of a year end title prevents him from being the goat
Nah if you say copy roger then you dont understand much of tennis sorry or its just typical nadal fan sentence for someone that is nadal obsessed ... because thats nonsence to say copy roger is possible. I would rather say to copy novak yes there i agree because his tennis is boring. Its for me not that much fun to watch becauses hes just a master in defending like hes well known to be a wall and also fast but thats it. Nadal with his topspin is for sure special but the true player that wont be easely copied is Roger Federer thats just a fact and no not because im a federer fan i say that no its just because hes an absolute allrounder he can manage every kind of ball and technique and thats much more difficult then just perfection a deadly topspin like nadal. Also nadal uses 2 hands and roger does all the magic by 1 hand so there also it speaks already for itself whats more of talent and unique but it doesnt anyway help because talking to a djoko or nadal fan is like talking to a door... even if one tells the truth one doesnt believe it
@@Jonas-bh9mq hello jonas !! lol ...RF is peRFect !!! the best of the best !! the GOAT
Nature Boy 93 H2H and GS titles should speak for itself
@@chrain2.080 Well can you count?... he has 19 still not 20 ... yes hes very near to beat federer but its still not yet
Still remember Federer calling this guy future number 1, back then.
I also remember Gulbis made big statements about challenging Fedal for the top prizes ... its very strange, often times its like bad luck to make such a pompous statements, several times Tsitsipas also made such statements and immediately afterwards he lost in the early rounds in several tournaments ... it seems like making such statements psychologically adds extra pressure on yourself to live up to your own hype and hinders your performance ..
With Gulbis he's been mired in many injuries, is probably not playing at his former level due to health issues ...
@@88feji
Tsitsipas is now 4 ranked in the world and a finalist of French Open and 1 Masters Title and 1 ATP Tour Finals
And Top 5 Now
He's not compared to Gulbis

Federer bageled Nadal on clay
Angelous Bacon but it is made out as if noone has done it. Dont call ppl dickheads, dickhead
with nadal it aint over till its really over...like when nadal retires from tennis...
another french open in 2020 too
AHHH GO ON.. HE'S JUST LIKE FERRER AND FAGNINI
10:38 It is at this moment he knew he fucked up..
Tienes que ganarle hasta el u'ltimo punto 😎
reupload?
You should make video about Dustin Brown as a greatest wasted tennis player
Lemme guess who else is on this list - Rios, Kyrgios, Nalbandian and Dolgopolov all come to rushing to mind. I'm including Kyrgios because I seriously doubt he'll ever get his head out of his ass and the reality is - the younger guys like Tsitsipas, Zverev, Auger-Aliassime, Shapovalov, Berrettini, Medvedev, Rublev, Rudd, Sinner, Rudd, Fritz, Tiafoe, etc. - they all actually love the game and WANT to be #1. They're not playing merely because they weren't good enough to be a professional basketball player. Also, I didn't include Thiem because he's actually 2 years older than Kyrgios. Also, I wana thrown in DelPo...except his main problem is that he can't stay healthy! Still, even when he is healthy - he should have won a lot more than 1 Slam.
Interesting how we looked at such poor quality video for ages and never thought twice. It's hard to see what's even going on.
Wow who is this guy
“Almost” is not a proper word in tennis.
Gulbis was a big fucking hitter. His backhand was a rocket
David Goffin did this to Nadal once, he won
as you say "allmost "
Hillary "almost" beat Trump.
Horseshoes and hand grenades, Ernests.
Almost bageled Nadal, almost won Nadal. Almost everything doesn't count on history. Sad but true
This match was in a time, where Nadals game was based on defense. Nowadays with the new Nadal it is impossible to do that to him. Gulbis had no constance, this is the skill, that the big 3 have. Only talent is not enough.
If Gulbis kept the forehand that he used against Nadal in that match then he would be unstoppable to this day
The video ends where it might have been starting to be interesting. What happened to him? Why did he stop to evolve?
A lot of players almost won against Nadal !
but then realise Rafa destroyed all their dreams back down to Zero

Nadal has lots as well, but if we are talking about "almost" winning a slam, Fed is the King. Winning Slams altogether is slightly different.
@@armstrongtixid6873 from when is one almost won a slam , deemed a king? 😂😂
@@metro228If you read my comment, you will understand that I said that Fed is the King of "almost" winning slams. My point is that you can see "almost" however many times you want and if if if (if Rafa wasn't injured blah blah blah), but what matters is the hard facts of what happened. Rafa was injured is not a valid excuse. Federer is injured is not that valid an excuse always. I mean, sometimes, it makes sense, like 2013 and 2008 AO, but whenever Rafa loses, "It's not fair because he was injured". Truth is, Rafa is EXTREMELY prone to injuries due to his inefficient playing style. How he's still playing is a miracle, but it has cost him his knees, his legs, his shoulder etc.
ALMOST .. yeah ALMOST
Comming close and actually beating someone is something compleatly different

You call Gulbis "wasted talent" for losing to Nadal?? smh...Did you make a video for each person that has lost to Nadal? What a collection that would be.
And what happened to him
There's still time for Gulbis
I think bcoz he has his own money.. he didnt take his career too seriously😂😂
Fun fact: Nadal was bageled in 2005 by Coria ON CLAY. I didn't know about this until just now lol.
Edit: He was also bageled in 2005 by Gaudio in Buenos Aires on clay. The score of the 2nd and 3rd sets were 06 1-6. That's insane.

The only thing Gulbis lacked was Brain😅😅
Well, at least he created a unique style.
Pra variar, Nadal ganhou com balão nos pontos chave. Baloeiro nato. Os balões mais caros da história 😂😂😂

You don't explain what made him a "wasted talent"
He was beaten by prime Novak, and Nadal playing at 50% beat Novak in final. That's goat Nadal
Tremendous Talent !!! My Favourite Player ! So sad see him play some Challengers and qualyfing at the present time ! I would like to see him playing like that again , despite playing very well at the beginning of this year at the Australian Open !!! Go Gulbis !!!
Consistency counts.
Not wasted. He gave some special performances, but that doesn´t mean he could have been world number 1 at time of these giants that still roam the earth. I believe he gave his max so we saw what he was capable of, a TOP 10 level at the time Tennis hit its peak. With more work and dedication he could have stayed there longer, but on peak performance, he maxed out as far as I can tell.

I was a big fan of Earnie. Such a rocket serve and hammer of a forehead possessed. I remember reading somewhere that tennis pundits said that he was more talented than joker. The difference being joker was dedicated towards training and Earnie had a liking for late night parties which led to his downfall. But then finally it all depends on what a person wants to be happy.
Too unfortunate for us to see Rafa taking on Gulbis at Rolland Garros...😟😟
Federer bageled Nadal on clay!
I don't think so
Only way to beat Nadal in clay is to copy his moves and maintain the aggressiveness all the way to the end. He’s almost their.....
Almost...
How exactly is this “talent wasted”?!
He's a hero,............in Latvia..
I don't think he is a wasted talent, just inconsistent. He tries and works hard
Nalbandian, Gulbis, Del Potro, Soderling all were hugely talented. But injury ruined their careers.
Jerzy Janowicz too
I don’t know if wasted talent is fair. He’s always had weaknesses that were exploitable. He stepped up in sone absolutely huge moments because he has a sack of steel and a great belief in himself. He’s had an entertaining career, and I will always turn the channel if I know he is on. He was close to having a great run last year, ran into some bad luck, then it all fell apart. I don’t feel like he’s done though. Things just didn’t seem like they were clicking, similar to Jack Sock who is still a force in doubles. I think he needs to get in peak physical condition and give it a go. There is no one more entertaining than Gulbis. He seems like he could be a bastard to deal with, but for some reason I root like hell for him.
I do not like the term "wasted talent" but to be honest, Gulbis could have achieved a lot more. He has all the weapons: a powerful forehand, great backhand, an amazing serve, good return and a superb drop shot. Reaching the top is not easy and it is hard for everyone to get there.
