Thank you for sharing this wonderful meal😘 A „pro“-tip: you should cut the chees thicker, like 1cm-pieces. Don‘t use oil and it‘s not good to melt it that much as you dit. It should not separate the fat. Excellent video! So delicious! Nostalgic too! My raclette brush with fame: A long time ago in Hollywood I was invited to a dinner party at the home of a famous Swiss cinematographer. He had one of those wheel raclette things with a full wheel of raclette (12-13 lbs.) slowly melting on it. Small buffet style, he'd scrape off some raclette on to our plates and we'd select a variety of delicious accompaniments set out on the table. As you describe, the evenig was relaxed, the light by candle, the wine divine. I was seated next to a very well known European movie star, which was unnerving, but the great food, wine, and down to earth conversation took the edge off and made for an unforgettable and extremely delicious experience I can still taste. In the end, I believe it is well worth the expense to treat yourself and your friends to a great relaxed evening of good food and conversation raclette style. Guten apetit, as it is said in German! Thank you again Emmy for sharing a wonderful way to enjoy life!

Thanks Jason, it was during cyclone Yasi. I was about 10, our house didn't flood or get damaged but the power and water was out for abour 3 days and I was excited that I came up with the idea to hold a saucepan over tealights to cook haha mum was concerned so she supervised of course and she was expecting the chicken to not be cooked properly so she checked it but it totally worked and it was honestly not that bad. While you're eating that serving of raclette, put more cheese on to cook. You end up eating multiple servings (a raclette meal can last over an hour, to several hours), with the pickles to cleanse your palate in between. Also, I love LOTS of cracked pepper on my raclette. Lastly, you can obviously use cheeses other than raclette. I love Tilsit, and even non-Swiss cheeses like Gouda & Edam.

Hi Emmy :). I'm Swiss and I very much enjoyed seeing you making raclette. Although we don't usually oil the pans (the cheese is oily enough and the pans are non-stick). Don't over melt your cheese, just enough to let it glide out of the pan and have some bubbles. The cheese slices are usually about 5mm in thickness. And the cheese to potato ratio is different (way more cheese than you had). We use salt, pepper and mild paprika to season the cheese after it melted. Glad you liked one of our national dishes and I'm very happy you attempted it and researched so well! The "swiss plus sign" is actually a cross. Our flag is a red square with a white cross in the middle.

OMG I used to make this with my mum all the time! My mum is Swiss, but we live in Australia. I'm glad that you made a video about it! It resurfaced my old memories! :)
I just love having briney green olives or dill pickles with some sharp or funky cheese and very simple crackers, sometimes with a good smoky or preserved meat like smoked turkey and salami, cheese with fruits... this looks like pure heaven to me.
Here in France you have industrial raclette in every department store and it is dirt cheap, that’s usually what people use to make raclette ( except around the region they actually make raclette)
French fries? Here in Norway its sold at the Christmas market every year. There are two kinds, one with just roasted potatoes, bacon and cheese. And one with bacon cheese, onions, cream and potatoes. They are cooked in these HUGE pans with a fire burning underneath them. Then when you order, they get your potatoes of choice and then go to the cheese station, grill the cheese with an electric heating element and then scrape it off the wheel onto your taters. Its THE BEST
Emmy, I can have a bad day amd watch one of your videos and your sweet, gentle, quirky demeanor ALWAYS cheers me up. Thank you!💖🙏 I'm sure other people feel the same.
"To infinity and beyond!" You lost me at "a little barnyard-y". Also, my Norwegian mother-in-law taught me you can use your cheese plane to peel cucumbers, and then to slice them very thinly for cucumber salad (which is basically cucumbers, vinegar, oil and a smidge of sugar). Makes the job SOOOOOO much easier than using a paring knife and veggie knife.
I just score the rinds of cucumber with a fork, slice them, add sliced onions and cover with vinegar. Refrigerate for several hours. Salt and pepper to taste. Amazing on a summer day.
I (a Norwegian) mostly use a potato peeler because it can be quicker, but the fact that a cheese plane (ostehøvel) wasn't universal made me happy really. Some Norwegian guy was like, I want some brunost. What is easiest to use? *Makes an ostehøvel*. We usually don't have oil in cucumber salads( if you make them to eat with traditional food, especially fish), but everyone does it different I guess 😊 glad your Norwegian mother in law has brought something "Norwegian" with her 😄 do your husband speak Norwegian? Since his mother speaks it?
My aunt used to do that when making pressgurka which is another type of quick pickled cucumber. We eat it with, among other things, swedish meatballs. Mmmmmm...
I’m an American living in Switzerland. Funny that you posted this yesterday - I just bought a pack of Raclette cheese today! :) Some tips: you need to melt much thicker slices of cheese - store bought sliced Raclette cheese is typically around 1/4” thick. No oil is needed, as Raclette cheese already contains copious amounts of fat. And the amount you melted was what one would typically put onto maybe two small potatoes. Don’t cook it quite so much, it should only just begin to separate. And then sprinkle with pepper, nutmeg, and/or paprika (or even cayenne) at the table. Some people like to put bacon bits or mushrooms into the cheese as it’s melting. In USA, I’d use Edam or Monterrey jack cheese as an affordable substitute. And try pepper jack - chili Raclette cheese is a thing here in Switzerland, and it’s delicious. Finally, when I’m at home, cooking just for myself, I sometimes make “ghetto Raclette” by just melting it under the broiler on a plate, or even “super ghetto” Raclette by melting it in the microwave. (Here in Switzerland, electric Raclette cookers are by far the most common method at home, since the ones with candles do take quite a while. The old traditional method was melting a wheel of it by a fire or under a heated iron... thing. As I understand it from older folks here, the candle powered ones are a fairly recent thing, invented as “Raclette for two” as a novelty.)
Yaaaaaaaas I’m with you tonight as always, it’s 2 o’clock in the middle of the night here in Sweden 🇸🇪 as always when you release your videos. Now I’m going to enjoy your exiting things, looove your glasses btw 💯 What’s the clock at your place? Love you Emmy xoxo 💋
How fun! Looks like something that would be perfect for those rainy nights in the camper with no power. Candlelight is a perfect medium for making dinner for 2! Thanks for sharing and much love and positivity from Montana! ✨💖✨
I adore your channel, and I loved today for 3 reasons. 1. I always assumed that it's nighttime in your kitchen because of the twinkle lights, but apparently it's "lunchtime" now. 2. Rarely do you get even close to frustrated, so I enjoyed the subtle change of tone in "Strike Anywhere", 3. The pouty lip when the cheese did not melt right off the skillet. If you were ever wondering if we want to know all of you, we do! (Meant in the best, and non creepy way! Sometimes women are encouraged to just be their most pleasing self...and I just wanted you to know that these little facets are just as lovely.)
@@trekadouble757 In switzerland raclettecheese cost around 12 CHF (12USD) a pound. For a meal you need 200 gramm per person. Thats 5 dollar for the cheese.
I currently work in the epicurean/food service department of a grocery store and our most expensive cheeses at the moment both run for $32 a pound and i find it absolutely insane how much people are willing to consistently spend on cheese and jam and honey
“... by myself, and with you, of course.” I was suddenly reminded of watching shows like Sesame Street, Mr. Rogers, and Bob Ross, when they all addressed us, and included us as viewers, as if we were genuinely important, or as if greeting an old friend. Thanks for thinking of us, and including us, Emmy!
Or migraines. I tried buying a perfume the other day. Took my brain two seconds to be like "Jesus, you know we get a migraine from just being around people? And now you do THIS? Well, too bad, here's your price"
When I walk through the mall I have to switch sides to maneuver as far away from the scent heavy stores as possible. The center carts are the bane of my existence.
The Swiss love their melted cheese from Raclette to Fondue....and I love the Swiss, though I do think we get ripped off at the grocery store when buying their pre-sliced wholly cheese. LOL 😉
Swiss products aren't cheap in Switzerland either. When I travel out of Switzerland and come back, I always feel robbed seeing how cheaper things are outside.
This reminds me, when I had some cheese I brought home from a school trip to Switzerland, and I was really craving some melted cheese in the middle of the night, I put it over my sisters lit candle. I'm glad she didn't see me lol
Two things- your videos have show up on my recommended recently and i love them! you do the things i think about but maybe dont have the means to do, and your videos are just so relaxing! second, your genuine attitude and enjoyment and the way you wax poetic about some thing you used to do or what you like... so cute! youre so passionate, i really enjoy it
I need this little candle cheese stove! It'll go great with my candle tea pot stove 😂😂😂 come power out, I'll be the best prepared cook on the block 🤣🤣🤣🤣
So glad you tried this wonderful cheese. My son-in-law is Swiss and he and his family taught me all about this traditional cheesy meal. Raclette is best when made on a raclette griddle where everyone has their own separate pan for the raclette slices which you don’t want to overmelt, just enough to allow it to slide off onto the food. The top of the griddle is for cooking shrimp, chicken, beef strips, grape tomatoes, bacon, cocktail onions, little gherkins called cornichons, zucchini slices, horse steak (yep, they eat that) and anything you feel like grilling. Then you add it to your plate with some small potatoes and add paprika and raclette spice (which I cannot find in the US so I bring it from Switzerland). Absolutely phenomenal dinner and it’s a fun way to enjoy family time. Real Raclette cheese is scarce in the US and it’s very expensive and there is only one or two brands. In Swiss grocery stores they have dozens and dozens of brands and kinds; even smaller grocery stores will have an entire dairy case devoted to it. The spicy kind is my fave. Enjoy your raclette experiences and thanks for your wonderful videos. 😃🥓🥩🥒🥔🍤🧀🇨🇭
Your content is so wholesome and relaxing. Helps me wind down for bed~ you're a very nice lady and I hope you and your family have had a lovely 2020 so far(:

It is so satisfying watching your videos. Your voice is so soothing and calm and your excitement when you have success makes me laugh. Love your videos emmy.
for some reason i thought, even like 2 minutes into the video, that you would be using candle wax in the pan like instead of butter or oil lmfao.... i have no idea why i assumed first this or why i didnt realize the candles were the heat source sooner. but it happened
This cheese grinder comes from Eskilstuna here in Sweden, it was made in 1988 by Karlsson and Nilsson, it belongs with the series knifeman900 and if you google you will find lots of their products. myself I love their craft and they last for many many years. Sweden has a lot of nice kitchen accessories from the past ... that lasts!
@@emmymade I love these cheese planes too! I have one like yours and another one that has a serrated edge that we use on chilled Spam to get deli thin slices. I've had them both for over 30 years and are used very often .
Thanks for sharing this information! I have some beautiful dripless swedish candles. They were gifted to me from an elderly swedish lady at my church before she passed away. She brought them from Sweden many years ago and I have only used a couple of them.... random story, I know, hahaha 😂

I learned to cook with nothing more the a candle as a little kid . Just part of the Out Doors Experience doing my little back yard Camparoo adventures LOL. The fact is you can fry just about anything that is friable. I've personally cooked Egg , Hamburger , bacon, Ham-steak, sausages and more. Boiling enough water for Hot Bouillon , Hot chocolate , tea or coffee requires more then one candle but can be done. Did you know a unopened can of Beanyweinies will explode doing this ? No one told me that one.
@@80sOzzy Ref the Beans ? Yea well I think I was like 5 or 6 years old on that one. LOL Camping out in the back yard by my self. The kids these day wouldn't even think about doing that stuff.
Love your show and how you're so open to trying new things .And old ways showing us how some peaple had to survive to get by in hard times even today's show helps in ways like if your power goes out you can still have a hot meal for your Family .And i love how kick back you are .Ty 😉
My hubby, the kids and I make Raclette each year on New Year's Eve. It's a lovely way to eat into the new year. We have a few versions of Raclette Cheese and lot's of pickeld veg and cold cuts, smoked ham, black forrest ham ( the real one from the black forrest since we are only one hour away) and fresh veg. I love it.
And thank you for watching! I remember attempting to cook over a candle during a blackout as a kid with very little success, so this was a fun experiment.
I have one of these and use it for camping, really nice in the winter when wood is wet and snowy and hard to make a fire with, and also lightweight and does not require messing with gas. Everyone should camp with them!
Yes! I loooove this and will be looking into getting my own Raclette maker. I swear I have always watched your videos but something about about them lately have me falling more and more in love with you Emmi! 😍🥰❤️👌🏼
I have some friends who have a really big raclette, it is so much fun to gather round and as you say just really visit, eat slowly and of course have some beverages. We do a chocolate fondue to have as the dessert portion, we have big chunks of a dense white cake, Angel cake, pretzels, marshmallows, fruits, obvi...banana, strawberries , dried mango, Apple slices...really the possibilities are endless for a chocolate fondue, but it's a really great way to end the night :) I learned how to cook over a tin can using a candle flame when I was in brownies :)
To infinity and beyond Love you Emmy, your whole manner is sooo relaxing, I could listen to you all day long. Also you sitting down felt more intimate, as if it was just you and me chit chatting... lovely🥰 ❤️😘🧀🥔❤️
Funny story: This same exact time 11 yrs ago we had a "snowmaghedden" in my area. The whole town was snowed in for about week, with no power. I lived with my unprepared aunt, and we survived off bread, pop tarts, and frozen precooked chicken nuggets lol. One morning I had it. I gathered a bunch of tea light candles, a deep metal pan, and two packs of my aunts cigarettes lol. I lit the candles, propped the pan up on the cigarette packs, and made me and my cousin our first hot meal in days. It was sooooo good, and I'll never forget it. Best scrambled eggs I've ever had! Lol Ps. I used A LOT of tea lights. It worked really well!
Mindymaria. we're your aunt's cigarette packs made of metal? how did the packs stand the candle heat from the pan? unless i missed something. i am truly curious.
PH CERT No, they were normal cigarette packs. I put one under the pan on each side, then packed the tea lights very close together under the pan, more in the middle. The cigarette packs were a good 3-4 inches away from the candles. I'm sure they still got warm, but not enough to melt the plastic on them. It cooked the eggs real good, but it wasn't too hot at all.
Mindymaria. huh. interesting. well, i am going to save three empty tuna cans and two dozen tea candles in a pot under the sink, for this purpose, hoping i never need to use it. thank you for the reply. ... maybe i should have asked what brand she smokes. lol. rhetorical. i fear a fire from the heat.
PH CERT The way things are going in this world, ya never know. Just get some charcoal, it lasts longer, and is more practical that using tea light candles.
I have made rice a roni in a med size skillet over a solid fuel camp stove.. very small it worked ! took a bit longer though. Toasted bread and cooked scrambled eggs on the same little table top stove the next morning after 2 days of no power. the raclette looks interesting, Love your channel and you always brighten my day! Thank you!

OMG! I always make raclette with my friends. It’s just the best❤️ 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
I just love having briney green olives or dill pickles with some sharp or funky cheese and very simple crackers, sometimes with a good smoky or preserved meat like smoked turkey and salami, cheese with fruits... this looks like pure heaven to me.
I had Raclette on French fries once and it was the best thing ever, hadn’t had it again since it was about as pricy for me as it was for you
Teh Kuwen that sounds so good 😋
Here in France you have industrial raclette in every department store and it is dirt cheap, that’s usually what people use to make raclette ( except around the region they actually make raclette)
Teh Kuwen it’s line €4 per pound in Germany around New Year’s Eve
Watching you have that crispy slice of bread with the cheese & egg was amazeballs!
I've never thought of this before! This channel always amazes me with how creative you can be! Keep doing it and ignore the haters
Emmy, I can have a bad day amd watch one of your videos and your sweet, gentle, quirky demeanor ALWAYS cheers me up. Thank you!💖🙏 I'm sure other people feel the same.
"To infinity and beyond!"
You lost me at "a little barnyard-y".
The cheese slicer was invented by Norwegians
I (a Norwegian) mostly use a potato peeler because it can be quicker, but the fact that a cheese plane (ostehøvel) wasn't universal made me happy really. Some Norwegian guy was like, I want some brunost. What is easiest to use? *Makes an ostehøvel*. We usually don't have oil in cucumber salads( if you make them to eat with traditional food, especially fish), but everyone does it different I guess 😊 glad your Norwegian mother in law has brought something "Norwegian" with her 😄 do your husband speak Norwegian? Since his mother speaks it?
Scandi Snowgirl yes yes yes it was 😉❤️
My aunt used to do that when making pressgurka which is another type of quick pickled cucumber. We eat it with, among other things, swedish meatballs. Mmmmmm...
I’m an American living in Switzerland. Funny that you posted this yesterday - I just bought a pack of Raclette cheese today! :)
Some tips: you need to melt much thicker slices of cheese - store bought sliced Raclette cheese is typically around 1/4” thick.
Now I’m going to enjoy your exiting things, looove your glasses btw 💯
What’s the clock at your place?
Love you Emmy xoxo 💋
8 pm 🙌🏼
Elin Malmgren what’s the *time
Pysslis thanks 😘
How fun! Looks like something that would be perfect for those rainy nights in the camper with no power. Candlelight is a perfect medium for making dinner for 2! Thanks for sharing and much love and positivity from Montana! ✨💖✨
Living in hurricane alley, I’ve many times cooked with candles when the power is out for day’s and weeks lol
Emmy you are a rare moment of sweetness and simplicity in this out of control world. Thank you for your time, effort, and imagination.
best feeling ever is seeing “posted 45 seconds ago”

Lol! You need to live, girl !! 😝
Emmy: This cheese was $30.95 a pound
Me: **falls to the floor, unconscious**
$30.95 a pound? Holy cow! I'd sell that, pocket the difference & buy a cheaper cheese.
It's from Switzerland, that explains this.
@@trekadouble757 In switzerland raclettecheese cost around 12 CHF (12USD) a pound. For a meal you need 200 gramm per person. Thats 5 dollar for the cheese.
I legit will not spend like two quod on cheese
I currently work in the epicurean/food service department of a grocery store and our most expensive cheeses at the moment both run for $32 a pound and i find it absolutely insane how much people are willing to consistently spend on cheese and jam and honey
“... by myself, and with you, of course.”
I was suddenly reminded of watching shows like Sesame Street, Mr. Rogers, and Bob Ross, when they all addressed us, and included us as viewers, as if we were genuinely important, or as if greeting an old friend.
Thanks for thinking of us, and including us, Emmy!
You go nose-blind when you work in a candle store. Can't smell it at all.
God bless you 🙏🏻🥰
I'm the same as Emmy. There's no way I could work in Lush or Yankee candle or even anywhere that sells pot-pourri!
@@alexreith4877 I do the same thing, only my kryptonite is nail salons. I don't know how those workers do it.
Every time I’m having an anxiety or panic attack I just watch ur videos! U never fails to soothe me, I consider this channel as my save place 🖤
Eat the ducky moss!!!
I love that you appreciate antique kitchen tools. To infinity & beyond!
This made my morning 😍 love from the Philippines! ;)
Hi 🇵🇭!
i am soooo jealous, this all looked insanely delicious, i'd love to try all this together. very wholesome and cozy video emmy! thanks!
I've been watching Emmy since the Japan days, and I don't think I have ever been so envious of her before. This is my dream meal.
Thanks so much for stinking with me through the years.🤗 This meal is really worth trying; simple and delicious.
@@emmymade You're very welcome Emmy! Also, "stinking," lol!
@emmymadeinjapan the youtube closed captions spelled itadakimasu correctly today. yay!!!
Leon Franks That’s because they are human-authored, not the automatic captions.
We need more people in the world like you. You are so wholesome! ❤
Your content is so wholesome and relaxing. Helps me wind down for bed~ you're a very nice lady and I hope you and your family have had a lovely 2020 so far(:
Thank you. 🤗 Sleep tight!
Such amazing wholesome content. Thank you Emmy!
Have you tried cooking with a vintage toy stove, a lot of them use light bulbs as the heat source.
I have 3 tiny stoves and this raclette. I love using them
I remember having an easy bake oven when I was a kid X3
There was also one of those tiny doll sized cast iron stoves with equally tiny pans that you could cook with by putting a candle inside the stove
Tori Holbrook my thoughts exactly lol
Me too😂😂
Well, you can cook with beeswax:

I just love you’re voice is so calming n the way u eat you’re food I swear I could watch u all day !😁
This cheese grinder comes from Eskilstuna here in Sweden, it was made in 1988 by Karlsson and Nilsson, it belongs with the series knifeman900 and if you google you will find lots of their products. myself I love their craft and they last for many many years. Sweden has a lot of nice kitchen accessories from the past ... that lasts!
Thank you for sharing the background information. I 🧡my 🇸🇪cheese slicer.
I feel so calm whenever I watch Emmy's video and I love it.
This reminded me how my friends and I in grade school used to take those long stings of laffy taffy candy and heat them over candle or lighter until they got warm and soft and slightly, well, blackened. 🤷🏻♀️
Kaslynn Wilson we used to put ours in our back pockets while in class, then by lunch or recess they were warm and stringy. Also kind of flat and definitely not for sharing. 😂
Starburst were a campfire essential growing up, especially the pink ones.
I love Emmy's editing style. The photography and music choices. Just, all of it. It's so peaceful and helps me calm down. Thank you for helping my anxiety Emmy!
Also thank your for making me hungry 😜🤩
I like to grate parmesan cheese for the outside of my grilled cheese sandwich. It gets crisp and gives a perfect crust.
I do this too! 😋
Does it affect cooking time?
@@zacharyhawley1693 Nope. Just grill as you usually would.
@@gigidodson nice. I have some extra parm I need to use. Thank you for the tip 😁😁

Hi, "To infinity and beyond!" When I was a kid we spent some time of our winter break in Yosemite. For dinner after skiing, playing in the snow or skating, My Mom would do fondue swiss cheese I think a little beer was added. So delicious. She did meats in the oil.🤗🐽✌❤, Sheryl
Emmy: neatly organizes the used match sticks onto the crease of her cheese slicer...
30 seconds later: tosses them off and continues speaking 🤣
She just didn't want to scorch the wood table with hot matches. Didn't take long to cool off.
Alex Reith. oh yeah. similar to what I was thinking when she did it. great minds...
i can just feel in every video i watch that emmy is absolutely passionate about food and it's just incredible, i love every minute of every video.
I had one of those cheese slicers when I grew up and it worked unlike all the ones I can find now
They work brilliantly.
Please post where we can get one. My sister took mine!
The slicer is known as a cheese plane and can be found on Amazon.
I really love raclette! So many good memories with friends and family ♡ its a really great way to have a meal together.
Oh no! That is a Homer Simpson moment, lol
Emmy is awesome. This video is super homely, cosy and fun. I love it!
My hubby, the kids and I make Raclette each year on
New Year's Eve. It's a lovely way to eat into the new year. We have a few versions of Raclette Cheese and lot's of pickeld veg and cold cuts, smoked ham, black forrest ham ( the real one from the black forrest since we are only one hour away) and fresh veg. I love it.
This is such a unique idea! Thank you for the great video!
Imagine having this at school, literally a life hack.
Can't bring matches or lighter to school....
@@PenguinStealsFruits0 guess u have to break the law for a bit, def need those eggs at school
Use a Bunsen burner in the Science lab then no need to be naughty taking lighter n candle to school lol
Yes! I loooove this and will be looking into getting my own Raclette maker. I swear I have always watched your videos but something about about them lately have me falling more and more in love with you Emmi! 😍🥰❤️👌🏼
This brings back memories of being in the Girl Guides and cooking drop scones on tin cans over candles.
Emmy: “Yet another reminder that the best things in life are the simplest”
Me: Great! I’ll be off to the market to buy a $30 piece of cheese.
Simple doesn't always mean cheap
Try brie. Cheaper and you may get the same result.
Oh but it's only about $8 a pound here in France :P
@@Perktube1 nope.I'm sure it would be delicious but brie tastes nothing like raclette
that piece Emmy bought was 15$
That cheese slicer is sooo satisfying to watch

Funny story:
This same exact time 11 yrs ago we had a "snowmaghedden" in my area. Lol
Ps.
Mindymaria. but the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning indoors is too high.
This video is lovely. Emmy makes these cooking activities so homey and warm. I love it!
I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Seeing Emmy sitting is really... surreal? Idk how to feel
I have made rice a roni in a med size skillet over a solid fuel camp stove.. very small it worked ! took a bit longer though. Toasted bread and cooked scrambled eggs on the same little table top stove the next morning after 2 days of no power. the raclette looks interesting,
Love your channel and you always brighten my day! Thank you!
$15 for a lump that size? 😲 I thought our local fancy grocery store was yanking us to sell something that size for *eight* dollars...
Good cheese is expensive..
Considering the amount of work and time put into good cheese, its usually a fair enough price
Cheap price means shit cheese.
Your voice and energy are so soothing. I could listen to you read the phone book and feel relaxed 😂
