People just wine alllll the time don't they. I lived with stairs like these for a long time. Drunk, high, didn't matter, carried furniture and everything.....everyone just wants to blame their own incompetence on others. I've fallen more on "up to code" stairs than the spiral.
I always wanted a spiral staircase til I moved into a place that had one that went up to a loft. I have no idea how the previous people got furniture up there. We could barely get up those stairs. They were narrow.
I'm planning to put in new stairs to my basement, and a spiral staircase is likely what we're doing. I have an exterior set of stairs for furniture. I don't drink alcohol. And why would I be more worried about falling down these stairs at night more than straight stairs? Either way would hurt. Is one more painful than another or more likely to lead to a fall for some reason?
Hi Lurch. Good questions. And I agree, spiral staircases are so cool and take up less space. Since each tread approximates a triangle, the outside foot has plenty of room to be stable. It's the inside foot closest to the pole which is at risk. Ideally the tread dimension should approximate 10", but on spiral stairs the inside foot only has maybe a 4"-5" tread dimension on which to be stable. Be careful please. Especially with socks on.
A spiral staircase should only exist on the main floor and grant residents access to the basement, moreover, the basement should have its own entrance for furniture moving. All of the other arguments are nonsensical. There is no data to back that spiral staircases are more dangerous than straight staircases.
You can put LED lighting and tread on the spiral stairs. Unless you're elderly - spiral stairs shouldn't be a deal breakers, they make all kinds of modular furniture for situations like this
I need to build 6 spiral stair cases to a loft, but would rather have one normal stair case against the wall but the damn AC units were put right in the way.
Back then there was more freedom than regulations. I rather have the freedom to build something that might collapse than to be told what to do because that’s not freedom.
BTW not everyone is a fool and walks upstairs blasted drunk. And why are you walking in slippers or socks on any wood floor / slippery surfaces?. Again fool Why are you trying to take anything up spiral stairs. THEY ARE ONLY FOR WALKING when there is a small area for stairs
You just need a hole in the floor and a pole you can slide down, like a fireman. That way you can only "fall" straight down, and not boinkety, boinkety, boinkety, boink! If you're really that drunk, you can always just replace the stairs with a slide and circle down on your b"tt... 😆 😆
@@POWERQUEST123 At first visit I thought there were 4. Then I started measuring. Our City Code and our County Codes vary with respect to straight -vs- circular staircases. And neither code accounts for low coefficients of static friction which contributed to the broken ribs.
Most codes are to screw the home owner over. There shouldn't be any codes. If I want to build a death trap for myself. I damn well should be able to. Mind your own business and stay away from my ass. Codes are really design to cost you money. I see way too many times in my youth. Building inspector wanting bribes to pass a house. And don't you dare try to BS me all inspectors I seen had thier hands out in many places. My grandfather paid twice as much to build his house..Because it was by code. Yet the house on both sides of him were not built to code. Big tell is he had to put a 3 foot foundation under his house. And the other houses sat right on the ground. ALL built at the same time. And there were many more. BUT that one was very visible. And yes all three were on flat ground. There is no way his house was in a 3 foot hole. Later I ran into inspectors myself. And had to pay $200 to $1500 for there bribes. And that was doing things by code. By a licence contractor. So F codes. Codes are code for BRIBES nothing more.
exactly, building a house in asia is so much easier than in north america, it's heavily regulated up north and as you said, unnecessarily cost more money.
I had to pay an AQMD (Air Quality Management District) inspector in Los Angeles County a $3,500 bribe in in about 1998 or 1999, IIRC. FWIW, she was a SMOKIN HOT brunette. 💃 I also had to pay an official at the City of Ontario, CA an $8,000 bribe in 2000. So, I got smart and moved to Boundary County Idaho where there are no building codes. The state inspects Electric, Plumbing and HVAC, but other than that, you can build whatever you can imagine. For slipping, just put carpet ontop
Good point. Will do.
That's what I would do. There's also some treadway covering that is a rubber molding.
Spiral staircases meet code if they are 60” in diameter and all other clearances are met. These appear to be.
My dream home would have an enclosed spiral staircase to the breakfast room (not as a main staircase). 😊

@MarkTheRealtor
That's why you're supposed to hop down on one foot!
If you are drinking wine.
You start downstairs. Then stay there....😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
The Stairs are definitely the impostor “among us”😂☎️

Thank you for commenting.
I fully agree. They’re stunning but SO hard to walk on. They need to ALL have better grip. No wood flooring. Even carpet is risky.
You can put LED lighting and tread on the spiral stairs. Unless you're elderly - spiral stairs shouldn't be a deal breakers, they make all kinds of modular furniture for situations like this

I’m super comfortable going up and down the steps. Maybe because I’m short?
Thanks for the note. I do admit they were fun to see and walk up. It was the walking down that was a bit shaky for me. Smiles.
How about the church saying you can’t be a pedophile and a Catholic
Who among us had never been to Europe
Red
As a European I have seen a total of two and both were in tourist locations 😂
I love a spiral staircase ever since I was a little girl and seen it on the tv show DIFFERENT STROKES they had one in their kitchen ❤❤❤❤
Yes, so true. They are beautiful.
Furnitures comes in parts which can be assembled as needed. No need to worry for carrying furniture upstairs
That's a good point. Perhaps they can be carried upstairs in pieces then.
I do not plan any big furniture in 2nd floor, do not like alcohol, might put carpet on stairs, have little space - they seem perfect for me ❤
Seems to me that is the right staircase for you. It sure was pretty.
I have a spiral metal staircase to my loft. The stairs are carpeted. It’s only going up about 6 feet so it only winds once.
I like CMargo. Sounds much safer than this 10' tall narrow one with slippery treads. Ahhhhh.
Back then there was more freedom than regulations. I rather have the freedom to build something that might collapse than to be told what to do because that’s not freedom.
That is a good point too. Thanks Robert.
If yourTHAT scared! Get an elevator!
Yeah definitely don’t build a normal staircase, you should just buy an elevator instead😂💡

Hi Baddog. Sorry this was disappointing to you. I will try and do better next time.
I have one with 11 steps . We love it and its beautiful . Wouldnt part w it for anything ❤🎉
Thanks for weighing in. Be careful on it okay.
That Stairs very Susy
Who has furniture?
Who wears slippery socks?
Good point. These homes are for people with no furniture and they always wear shoes in the house. Haha.
Beautiful staircase

You! Most codes like this are made for people who have trouble crossing the street on their on.
Yes, true, and for people who perhaps drink too much alcohol sometimes.

Having a spiral staircase inside the house is considered as bad in feng shui. They are supposed to disturb the flow of energy (qi).
I want to! What another person’s trash may be someone else’s dream.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
If you walk too fast down a circular staircase you can get dizzy. Happened to me.
Mine is about 120 years older
Impressive. Almost in the 1800's.
Oh no! I didn't think about the furniture moving 😢....currently building our first home. We might have a problem 😅 P.I.V.I.O.T!
A realtor citing code. 😂
A Licensed Building Inspector citing Code. An Engineer with a MASTER's Degree citing Code.
@@MarkTheRealtor What codes are they breaking in your area?
@@POWERQUEST123 There are 2 codes this staircase violated. AND, this exact staircase injured its owner, which is why they sold.
@MarkTheRealtor I was going to say I don't see 4 code violations.

Beautiful isn't always safe, is it?
Yes Lisa. So true. It was visually beautiful. Going up felt easy, going down was a bit concerning.
stair sus
Quick get the batpole
Yes, if you push a button on the top of the pole, it slides down into the basement for escaping.
