Most of the similarities you between TMS and Persona are present in Shin Megami Tensei (turn based battles, elemental weaknesses/resistances, regular attacks that don't consume MP). Aside from side stories functioning similarly to social links (mind you that Persona wasn't the first game to implement this kind of mechanic and FE did it 4 years earlier), TMS and Persona aren't all that alike and I don't understand why people often call TMS a Persona clone.
I use the name Persona because that same time the Persona 4 Dancing All Night was around and make a joke on how this game is just a Persona 4 Dancing All Night with Fire emblem and a bit of MegaTen mechanics. Also kind of have to blame the same spin off game for it. Fans sort of see Persona 4 and it's spin off and quickly blame Persona 4 for this game weeb style looking game. Have no issue, I am a hardcore MegaTen fan since Imagine first came out to the West as Beta. It is just other fans wants to point a finger and blame someone for this game crossover that did not meet any hardcore fans expectations.
I came here ready to throw down in defence of one of my favourite wiiu titles, but I'm pleasantly surprised to find that this is a well though out review that covers all the crucial parts of the game completely fairly. Personally I really enjoyed the idol premise and the characters(except Barry he can rot), but thats the weeb in me talking lol
Honestly, at first, I thought there was very little FE involvement. It didn't take me until 2 years to realize that the conversation / side stories with the characters are litteral Support Levels, (C, B, and A) which are a blessing. It also hit me that the forging system and being able to reforge weapons into better (and unlock more skills?), is like Fire Emblem's forging as well where you can improve the stats of a weapon. Honestly, this game was a treat and I loved each and every weeb second of it.
RamZaes: I hope they port it over to the Switch, or at least come up with a sequel, but that's unlikely. Me: (looks at copy of Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore for the Switch)
dr4c0blade The story of PLvsAA is about a secret town hidden from the wold and finding out the explanation for such a town. That is literally a Professor Layton story. Also, I hope you realise the trials in AA wouldn't be nearly as exciting if it were not for the "boring" Investigations.
But the gameplay is all AA, with Layton elements thrown in. Even the puzzles are much easier than normal. And seeing as how I found the Layton puzzle solving a lot more fun then the normal investigations, I can't agree with that second point at all.
Disagree with 'boring investigations' part, agree with it being an AA game. The story is very Laytonesque indeed, but we're talking gameplay here. Cross-examining a whole crowd at once was great.
But the thing is, all of Layton's game mechanics got into the game. However, for Ace Attorney, half it's gameplay was cut from the game. Also, aside from point and click, the Layton sections are very different to the Investigations as they don't even serve the same purpose. The investigations in AA are there to amplify the murder trials in the game. In PLvsAA however, the murder trials are done exclusively through trials whereas the Layton segment is more or less there to continue the mystery of the town and solve puzzles, something a Layton game would do. Also, seeing as there is a lot of reading in both series and the crossover, the fact that the story is very one sided can not be disregarded.
All good points, but the Layton sections felt like an afterthought to me when compared to the trails, which were always the centerpiece, just like in Wright's home game. And I disagree about the puzzle solving; while the mystery of the town is part of it, they also amplify the murder trails in the game. They kinda have to, since the truth of the witch hunt trails turn out to be a big part of the mystery. Also, a crossover story is one-sided when one group of characters aren't given enough to do when compared to the others. One of the things I really like about the game is both parties from both games are constantly interacting and working together, so I can't agree that including a Layton-esc plot twist at the end makes it one sided. It's not like AA is a stranger to crazy out-of-nowhere plot twists, anyway.
Can we talk about the fact that this game turned Fire Emblem villain Excellus into an ARCH WITH BOOBS?! There's creative liberties, then there's _this._ xD
Its a good game bogged by horrible writting and wayyyyyyyyy too many cliches that it became cringy. Dense main character, check Side main character that is childhood friend that wants to date MC, check Wild, good hearted friend that most likely strikes out with the ladies, check Someone from another continent, check Famous person that mc or side MC idolizes that appears like a tough shell but has a hidden soft side, check. Missing person is found to have no memories and on the evil side and then struggles to break free and then once does, goes about seeking redemption, check. I ended up skipping the story and only focused on the side stories at times, because they were either funny, or actually well written. I'm not one to bitch without giving a solution, so here is 2. 1) keep the same characters, but rewrite their personalities so they seem to have a view on the world that, if you dig into their backstory, you learn why. Ex; side MC is a recluse, but the MC drags her out and about to help her. As the story progresses, she holes up sometimes. Doing her side story shows that she saw the event that killed her sis, and thats why she is afraid to be around people, because she is afraid it will happen to her. After all, seeing that would be scarring for ANYONE, and no music will make the fear go away forever. Things like that would make the characters more relatable and make them stand out. 2) take the leaders and the strategists/head hanchos of each fire emblem game (ex: chrom robin and lucina from awakening, seth Ephraim and Erica from sacred stones, etc.) And have them appear in a relm where shadows and persona exist. Their persona are unlocked when attacked by shadows or something. Gameplay would be like persona, with persona style battles and possibly social links, but the characters from fire emblem with maybe a few custom characters to maybe make a story around (for instance, twins that are the guards of the world transported the brightest and the strongest from certain time periods to help fight [which could also tease characters from a future game if the developers wanted to] )
raditzace IMHO, I think your problem is playing TMS #FE for the story. It isn’t even an understandable gripe as with Fates (much as I lovelovelove that game and it’s characters) where we were promised good writing. You kinda knew you were getting something dumb, but I think the promise is that it’s like taking Red Alert 3 seriously. This game is meant to be a celebration of both SMT and FE, and I think it works wildly.
Boyd the Reaver people play rpgs/jrpgs for 1 of 3 reasons: story, gameplay, or characters. I tend to play for gameplay, but I also enjoy characters that are written well. Example: persona 4/5 or xenoblade chronicles x. In all 3 games, the story is there, but it is focused more on world building/exploring and/or character development. So when I checked it out on gameplay, it reminded me of persona, so it set a small expectation: dungeon exploration would be the secondary factor, and character development would be more important.

The Core Gameplay loop eas very rewarding/addicting and Combat was very fun to approach. With a better Story the game could have been easily one of my top 5 games, because the battelsystem is so much fun
I did not watch a single idol thing befire and I still enjoyed it immensly. You rarely find a game full of so much positivity.
I really enjoyed the game so much. I enjoyed the personalities of the characters and the combat was fun to play with. Sure the story may have some problems but I would totally buy it again if it gets a Switch port.
@@zafranorbian757 if your a fire emblem fan, you'll hate it. if your a megami tensei fan, you'll hate it with a burning passion. if your a RPG guy that doesn't know Jackcrap about the former two series, you'll probably like it.

THIS IS A FIRE EMBLEM GAME?
I'm genuinely suprised
I'm over here praying for a sequel because I freaking love this game.
Seriously, FE had that stuff in 2002 already?
Yes, The Binding Blade was released in early 2002 and it introduced supports
jokes on you recommend video, i played this enough to know and remember it
I came here ready to throw down in defence of one of my favourite wiiu titles, but I'm pleasantly surprised to find that this is a well though out review that covers all the crucial parts of the game completely fairly.
Well good thing that they ported this to the switch
Thank you for making this video i completely forgot this game even existed until now.
RamZaes: I hope they port it over to the Switch, or at least come up with a sequel, but that's unlikely.
Me: (looks at copy of Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore for the Switch)
and dose that port have all the dlc costumes
12:02 OK there, right there I finally lost it. Great video man
if you were one of the 13000FE over on the best friends channel then you certainly know about it
Yay another 13000FE person!
Woolie can't read maps and attribute weaknesses like a normal person.
I think both the megaten and the fire emblem fandoms try to forget this exists
The fire emblem game I didn’t know existed..... except I do because it’s currently in my Wii U. Oops.
just gotta say, I knew it existed, but this is the last goddamn thing I ever wanted Fire Emblem to do.
1:22 ...no it's not. If anything, it's an Ace Attorney game with the boring "searching for clues" part replaced with Layton's puzzle solving.
dr4c0blade The story of PLvsAA is about a secret town hidden from the wold and finding out the explanation for such a town.
This seems to take more influence from Persona than regular Shin Megami Tensei.
Can we talk about the fact that this game turned Fire Emblem villain Excellus into an ARCH WITH BOOBS?!
There's creative liberties, then there's _this._ xD
I come from the future.
The game is on switch, and it's good.
this game is actually pretty enjoyable than i thought it would be.
eleanora best girl btw
Correction, the fire emblem game *i tried to forget existed, and almost did. **_Until you posted this damn video_** anywho.*
Great video by the way.
4:31 I knew Chrom looked suspiciously like Orpheus from Persona 3 for a reason...
No I actually did know this existed but thanks for making a video on it anyway
Wow I can't believe the amount of People saying this game is bad because it focuses on idols. I wasn't ready for such bad opinions today
>Sees your picture profile
Ah, a fellow man of culture!
Its a good game bogged by horrible writting and wayyyyyyyyy too many cliches that it became cringy.
Dense main character, check
Side main character that is childhood friend that wants to date MC, check
Wild, good hearted friend that most likely strikes out with the ladies, check
Someone from another continent, check
Famous person that mc or side MC idolizes that appears like a tough shell but has a hidden soft side, check.
Gameplay would be like persona, with persona style battles and possibly social links, but the characters from fire emblem with maybe a few custom characters to maybe make a story around (for instance, twins that are the guards of the world transported the brightest and the strongest from certain time periods to help fight [which could also tease characters from a future game if the developers wanted to] )
Idols are one of the worst things and creepiest things Japan has ever produced.
raditzace IMHO, I think your problem is playing TMS #FE for the story.
You know you fucked up your crossover when fans of both franchises disliked it
You're a prophet lmao, this is coming to switch now
Honey I knew this existed, I just didn't want to acknowledge it's existence when it 1st popped up on the wii u XD
I like your content. Sarcastic and fun. Keep up the good work
i love the odd addition of: fire emblem, persona. but you also added kh and pokemon music. amazing.
Caeda is pronounced like Caesar, See-da
Missiletainn isn't the original Latin pronunciation of Caesar something like "kai-sar"?
@@justisaac9591 yes, but no one outside of Histroy and latin students use the original Latin.
I was using the common english pronounciation as a jumping off point to make it easier to see where the official pronounciation came from
Missiletainn I've just always pronounced Caeda using a hard c for that reason, but to each their own
@@justisaac9591 The official Pronounciation is soft, See-da, and given the origin for the name, it makes more sense
I just use the Japanese pronunciation of "She-da" cause it just sounds better imo
Damn now I’m gonna wish for Tokyo mirage sessions alts for these characters
Uh the attacks like Zio, Agi, etc originate from SMT. You keep calling the SMT portions of the game Persona portions
Probably because it plays more like Persona than that of SMT
@@josephhudson6650 how?
@@josephhudson6650 persona doesn't lock every character to one demon. Joker, for example, at least has the ability to Summon others.

Now coming. To switch for an encore
At 2:47 you showed Nowi not Tiki
Whos watching this during the release of the switch port?
I LOVE THIS GAME
I second that.
I did knew this existed. I just wanted to forget it did.
Rip SMT even in their cross overs it's more persona than SMT.
I just found my favourite UA-camr 👏
RamZaes: I wish this game gets ported to switch.
Nintendo: your wish is my command! *Switch snap*
I wouldn't say we "didn't know" it existed. I'd say we just decided to pretend it didn't exist.
Jokes on you, it's now on switch
That one game you wish didn't exist, like seriously where are all the likable characters? They tricked me with that Fire EmblemXSMT tag
No problems with the game really. But...
CHROM MY BOY WHAT DID THEY DO TO YOU???
The fun thing now is that it’s being ported to the switch and having a crossover with the fire emblem mobile game
This is my favourite RPG on the Wii U, I hope it gets a Switch port.
You have no idea, I want this so badly
congratulations your prize is a censored switch port
@Weston Meyer so it's double censored
@Weston Meyer wait a second. I thought they censored the western version again and ported It.
Sorry about that it seems I was mis understanding the situation
This game was genuinely good I really enjoyed it so don’t underestimate it too much
lmao I love this game, it's honestly fantastic. Double whammy of the niche and being on a low-selling system fairly late in it's lifespan, though.
Fun fact, this game WiiU game was gonna be a Fire Emblem/Pokemon crossover if Pokemon Conquest did not exist.
That was For DS though
i've honestly been addicted to this game ever since i started playing it, the bland story doesn't really bother me since i wasn't expecting anything great.
It was probably the best game I played last year.
I finally beat it last night and now I am doing a lunatic playthrough that is even more fun than hard.
I know it exists, I just ignore it’s existence.
It’s honestly just persona.
In fairness of TMS, it is more of a persona game than Fire Emblem
And besides the combat system of this game is one of the best rpg battle systems i have ever played
I love how the skills in games created by the Shin Megami Tensei team are all the same names.
