I know that my '05 Sienna Limited 3.3 vvt-i minivan 240hp has racing inspired performance requested by the chief Japanese designer at the time. Thank you past Toyota💙
Naruse is one of the reasons why Toyota got back to racing and he was part of Gazoo racing along with Toyoda which they started together. Gazoo is part of his legacy.
I've loved Gazoo Racing since they started racing their cars a few years back, but I had no idea their history was so rich. This is an awesome video, great job man.
The quality of every video this channel puts out is beyond impressive. It’s like a more serious donut media. Keep it up, I’m looking forward to seeing that subscriber count climb
This video made me cry in so many ways. The fact that I own 2013 FR-S (86) and I know it was one of two cars which re-stimulated the fun back into Toyota and the passion people in the company have.
In the South East Asian and some related markets, Toyota even have another division of TRD, the TRD Sportivo. They made additional bodykits and small accessories like carpets, mudflaps, fuel cap, for their economy cars on this market.
I think those 2 things are very different. While TRD producing more like performance part based on Japan, TRD sportivo (regional based) made only oem package such as bodykit and emblem.
Bet many Toyota enthusiasts don’t remember the 1988-91 Camry AllTrac(full time 4WD) sedan. Super rare and with the appropriate TRD goodies it would’ve been like having an All-Trac Celica with four doors!
This is one of the most Thorough videos Ive ever seen on the TRD history and heritage.Take it or Leave it, put it all out there. I really enjoyed it. Subscribed.
my 5th Gen TRD 4runner may not be good for racing but this damn thing is a CHAMP off roading. A-trac, terrain select, crawl control, rear locker. All great features. Dont come at me with that "I dont want the car to do the driving for me". When your stuck and your "driving" can't out or through an obstacle, those features DO help.
My Trucking Co. used to deliver their experimental cars to their Gardena facility. It was always hush hush with the Containers being unloaded in secret. This was during the 80’s.
Great video! Personally I was saddened first when Toyota went from the GT4 Celica (pronounced Sell-ee-ka here in Australia), to the Corolla WRC car, because of the homologation rule changes, but was gutted when I learnt that they were withdrawing altogether from World Rally in order to pursue F1 glory. Along with that came the death of the GT4, and the end of them making a turbo, all wheel drive sports car available for the public. My second car was a 1977 Celica coupe, and it was the most fun car I have owned. It took 10 years of spirited driving, and the only things it needed in that time was normal maintenance, and a new diff centre. I had plans to retro mod it with a 3S-GTE, but life had other plans. In the end, it was cancer (rust) that sealed it's fate. R.I.P!😢 I literally got goosebumps watching the montage of Toyota's old classics that you showed in the video. I was excited when I first found out about the 86 GT being released. While I do like the look of it, I was a bit let down to here it has a N/A Subaru engine, and that it was made in conjunction with Subaru. Nothing against Subaru, they make great cars, but the new 86 just isn't a real Toyota! I realise that the flat four offers great weight distribution, and low centre of gravity, but the car would still handle great with an inline four, preferably with a turbo! Like yourself, I absolutely love the LFA, but with only 500 made, it will most probably be as far out of reach for someone like me as a Ferrari, Lamborghini, Koenigsegg etc. so I don't even hope to own one someday. I wish they would have made a Supra model from the LFA. Keep the basic layout, but offer it with a newer version of the 2JZ-GTE (in place of the LFA's awesome, instant revving, exotic, but expensive V10), perhaps with VVT, and a good old fashioned 6 speed floor shift manual, instead of that flappy paddle bullshit. Incidentally, the downfall of true Toyota sports cars (when they went to predominantly front wheel drive) coincides with shitty four-stroke motocross bike trend. I jokingly call it "the world gone crazy" age!😅 I don't really like the direction Toyota is going. I still hold hope they might again bring us something great, but I'm not holding my breath. The new turbo, all wheel drive GR Yaris looks like it might be fun, but does it really look anything like a serious sports car? I mean compare it to an ST205 GT4, enough said. Anyway, thumbs up on a cool vid!👍
Great vid, The only thing I thought you may include other than “pretty much everything else” 😉 was the TRD Hilux and Aurion from Australia released around 2008-09. Both with water inter cooled, supercharged V6’s, Bilstien suspension, bigger brakes, leather interior etc. I had an 08 TRD Hilux, with TRD plate 247 and it was heaps of fun. Keep up the great work 😄✌️
Well, as far as the Philippines is concerned, only a few people are aware of Gazoo Racing (other than the Tamiya Mini 4WD crowd, because of the mini 4WD kits of the GR Supra and their LeMans prototypes). Most people still recognize the TRD brand as Toyota in racing--and not just because it's still alive in most Toyota dealerships, offering upgrades for their vehicles, most notably the Hilux pickup and the Fortuner SUV.
Not sure if any other markets got them, but Toyota Aus/NZ did in-house TRD supercharged Hilux and Aurions in 2010/11. They were crap compared to their rivals but was a cool concept to see somone produce. We later got the TRD "upgrade" package on the 2016 Hilux. That was an absurd joke.
Great video. Loved it start to finish. I just wish to point out that the Mark X has less in common with the Camry. They (and the Mark II before them) are rear wheel drive platform, and the older ones were available with JZ engines (think supra, Lexus IS). Those are NOT Camry configurations. For those old enough to remember the Cressida, they lived on in Japan despite being cut from the US lineup. That is the Mark X of today.
Toyota should definitely reconsider many aspects of TRD models. I understand that they are all about reliability, but leave that to the original trim levels and make the TRD models more fun to drive. Good racing suspensions, turbos, and exhaust.
Awesome video - thanks for sharing this history with those many of us who never really took the time to understand TRD's history. As a longtime follower and fan of RalliArt - which doesn't have nearly as many successes as TRD... I sympathize. Good thing for Toyota fans - you at least still have enjoyed strong management teams who've maintained a passion for the Sport. Something I regret that is lost with Mitsubishi. And it shows. "There will be no progress if you fear failure." So true. Even in compromise, there is tremendous strength. If one looks at survival and a continuance of tradition this way, then one can't fault why the A90 was built as a collaboration with BMW. It just shows that you can still be successful with compromise. At least Toyota can still proudly race cars under its own banner.
My understanding is that TRD is more like a sub-brand thats majorly owned by USA or outsiders from Toyota and GR is now the works team backed by the manufacture.
Story, to us Toyota owners and the World, but on recent years, you missed to tell to Great story of Toyota's rise back on top in Rallying. Mr Akio Toyoda's friendship with Tommi Mäkinen led directly to form Toyota Rally team in 2017, and Tommi leading team to Victories and today 2021 Toyota is leading WRC championship as Team and in drivers leaderboard. Toyota is the biggest car manufacturer in world and biggest brand in Finland. Most common car on roads in Finland is still 2006 Toyota Corolla. Biggest seller because it just works. Our family drives Avensis, and Corolla daily to work and on freetime i drive 1992 Celica Gt conv. Total number of kilometres on these over 1 million. Still going strong.
one thing I learned about F1, is that until recently if you even looked at Ferrari wrong they caused issues with you. just look at the crap they have pulled on more than one occasion to try an limit competition.
I wished they'd just go turbo every line of cars they had for 5 years. Like the way Ford did for a while. Would definitely love a twin turbo Tacoma or Tundra straight from the factory.
U forgot the supercharged mark2... a friend of mine owned one.. u hit a button the suspension stiffened and it pulled harder the supercharger... it was a cool car... fast.. n simple... just like the supercharged Levin ae90? I think it was...
Supra MK3 (MKIII) did not win anything in 1987 other than one single round at Sugo and only after the swiss build RS500 retired. There was further no theoretical way for the Supra to win the championship because it was not race ready until Sep'87 as Toyota was very well aware of the rule change that increased the multiplication factor from 1.4 to 1.7 that made the Turbo Supra non competitive overnight.

I always thought the "u" was missing "TuRD" The 2000 GT is ugly with the bulging front headlights and huge rear tailights. The over all body lines are nice though. The prettiest early japanese car was the classic late 1960's Datsun 2000 Roadster 2 seat sports car.
All of Toyota's cars today are front wheel drive, 4cyl and the only Supra they built turned out to be a crappy BMW. And half of all Lexus cars are front wheel drive, 6 cyl. Are you surprised TRD is dead?
Toyota shortchanged north america , no land cruiser pickups , no diesel pickups , after 2004 Tacoma's got too big , no longer a compact , totally missing the boat everyone I know wants a small DIESEL pickup !
Nice one dude. Im pretty excited about these GR Corolla rumors ive been reading the past couple of months. Dont even care itll be $30k+ cause I know its going to be really good.
I had a 2006 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road. biggest piece of junk I ever owned. I called it the "TRUD". the engine and drive train never never broke, but everything else did. it completely turned me off from Toyota. I wont by another one. not sad to see TRD die off.
All divisions like this are kinda dead. :/ it’s probably why there’s so many of us 90s-00s car lovers out there because that was the end of stuff like this.
i came to your channel from tiktok, and it turns out that you make very high quality videos and they are very entertaining to watch. You just got a new subscriber. :3
TRD is not dead, you must realize Toyota after everything they built, were all expriments and tests, part of there project to make the best cars that people want to drive, TRD still does the Dakar, Baja1000 and Nascar, after the horrable LFA crash, Gazoo racing was the new focus group for Toyotas cars, while TRD focus on off roaders, both are dominating racing, GR has won WRC, Le mans 24h, and now recently they are tackling GT3 racing, This is Toyotas plan on being efficient, and with the cars and trucks they have given us recently, id say there doing a danm good job, also one more thing lets not forget others have been a part of Toyotas plan, Tom's, Scion, and recently SEMA is working with Toyota on overlanding trucks
@@albonfilms Albo, isn't TRD still very active in the USA with Nascar, Formula drift and various offroad activities? I would say its still very much alive here, since Toyota USA hates the "gazoo racing" name. I think this video is a little misleading
@@ciello___8307 great,i hate the gazoo name, unfortunately we got bugger all TRD models in Australia if any at all. As soon as i souped up my imported surf with better suspension and engine mods i stuck TRD 4x4 offroad stickers on it and TRD windscreen sunshade and badges on it. Looks better than gazoo poo,and everyone says so too.
@@basithph8958 I love Toyota and am a fan for their sheer reliability (Camrys get way too much hate for being "boring" imo), but their future Gazoo Racing plans look promising. It's honestly refreshing to see them go for more fun and performance based vehicles for people that want engaging cars, like the GR Yaris (which I still think is a crying shame for the fact that it's not being released in the U.S.). There's definitely a market for fun rear wheel drive and rally cars, and I hope Toyota sets a precedent for it and expands on it.
Check out neutral drop, they were just as small maybe a month ago. Another car channel but... Of a different type. Think you other car dudes would enjoy it
TRD is alive and doing well, just not the street sports parts we saw in the 90's. TRD USA is primarily focused on supplying engines to NASCAR Cup Series since 2007, and has won several manufacturer's and driver's championships. You failed to also bring up TRD's open wheel history, with Toyota winning the 2002 CART Championship, taking the Indy 500 and the IRL Championship in 2003. I'm proud to say I've worked for TRD USA since 1998 and we've only evolved with every new venture. We are far from gone in motorsports... but street superchargers are no longer our priority.
How could one go about getting a job with TRD? I'm in the Army currently but don't plan on staying in and working for a company like TRD would be the dream.
@@mentals555 back in March of 1998, I literally just dropped off a resume at the front desk. 6 months later, I got the call. People say when you love your job, you don't work a day in your life. It's been an awesome 23 years so far

When your CEO ditches you and starts his own brand of racing aside from the company in which was named after his family name, should say everything about your job in terms of the confidence he has in you.
Not only that but how companies work, with so much administration and focus on profit, this entitys became an afthertough, and akio being raicing enthusiast knew that if they wanted to put sports cars again they needed a leaner, secret team away from the corporativism, no company would make a Gr yaris competitor as toyota did, completley from the ground up, expensive materiars, awesome engine, lightweight drivetrain, coupe form, price at a resoable price but with more punch that whats spected
Blame government and epa standards with not wanting “ unsafe” cars or cars that put out too much emissions, they want everyone driving the same boring stock economy car. Suspension mods are deemed unsafe and power mods are deemed to put out too much emissions over the stock variant
Yes, the true "TRD" is already dead. But the sadder thing is, In Indonesia, Toyota still sell some cars and accessories with "TRD Sportivo" Badging and most of them are only cosmetic changes, does not improve any performances. So Indonesian Toyota dealers just sell riced out cars from factory.

The Vios GRS, looks a meme for me. And one Guy tries to defend the GRS Vios (despite it has some changes in suspension,10-speed CVT with pad del shifter, exterior looks), it’s completely a joke and nothing near with a race car counterpart.
That is in the US too. The last thing TRD did here was the Tundra supercharger from factory. They ended that a while ago. Now its all for trucks and suspension.
Awesome video, very informative. Japanese automobile companies use to change their sub-brand names time to time. To me, TRD is just another page of the history book, and GR is the opening of the new chapter.
that's intelligent of your part, i didn't know how to put it in words (at least not in english lol), but for me the GR division is THE new TRD, with upgrades over regular vehicles as well as original creations for motorsports
I have a Pontiac Vibe (Matrix with a Pontiac styled exterior and built by NUMMI in Freemont California). I started wanting to do something to it, and found that Hellwig no longer made anti-sway bars for it, however the TRD kits for the Corolla (which were actually Hellwig parts) was still available, and since the Corolla and Matrix (and Vibe, and Geo/Chev Prizim) all share the same platform, the bars fit. I added those and a bar that spans the top of the shock towers. That was TRD's contribution to my car.
I loved my TRD Matrix. It was hilariously underpowered and loved to drift on dirt and snow with little speed required. Going up a lengthy hill I had to take the truck climbing lanes in 3rd gear being passed by said trucks.
this was a donut media level video in terms of story telling, editing, research, presentation, and even music. amazing video bro you really deserve more recognition!
@@CorollaChronicles their decision though has nothing to do with what it sounds like. Lol. From what sources say a lot of Toyota inside people prefer TRD over GR. GR is Akios brainchild. But either way it’s cool, I’m glad Toyota is still doing big things with Motorsport.

Great piece as with yr Rebadged Z4 GR Supra explanation piece.
Thank you! 👍
I think you found your niche!
You've set a high bar with this vid.
Keep up the good work
Thank you Hieu!
interesting video ! :-) Things i never heared of.
Thanks for calling Toyota out! Maybe it’ll help inspire things to come!
I love these back story videos!
Thanks for watching!
Trd was one of the only names that mattered ... Its so true... The brand died and left us with nothing... Please wake up toyota
Wonder what gazoo is gonna give us in the future!!
What stands behind my friend’s Prius. Goddamm.
Sadly TRD has become just a badge 😢
All divisions like this are kinda dead. :/ it’s probably why there’s so many of us 90s-00s car lovers out there because that was the end of stuff like this.
I wish I knew about your channel earlier, subbed lol
20:42 weird echo
you should definitely work with donut media, lol i get the same vibe from you while watching you're videos.
i came to your channel from tiktok, and it turns out that you make very high quality videos and they are very entertaining to watch. You just got a new subscriber. :3
Thank you so much for those kind words! Very happy you're here!
TRD was truely legendary during their prime time.
One of the most unique performance houses IMO
@@albonfilms Albo, isn't TRD still very active in the USA with Nascar, Formula drift and various offroad activities? I would say its still very much alive here, since Toyota USA hates the "gazoo racing" name. I think this video is a little misleading
@@ciello___8307 he’s mainly talking about consumer cars dude
@@klnvv still disagree on that front too. We have more "TRD" cars and TRD off road pacakges than we've had in the mid 2000's
This is good, it's like donut media without the nonsense and meme culture. Just straight up facts, well written and edited.

TRD was once legendary and it’s sad to see them go
But I’m looking forward to what Gazoo Racing has to offer
I think as long as that racing spirit is there, then it will be great regardless of name
@@albonfilms oh definitely and it brings hope for us Toyota fans too
@@basithph8958 I love Toyota and am a fan for their sheer reliability (Camrys get way too much hate for being "boring" imo), but their future Gazoo Racing plans look promising.
@@neonreign2988 you ever seen that V8 swapped Camry?
@@neonreign2988 oh I’m waiting for a GR Corolla to come to America

Check out neutral drop, they were just as small maybe a month ago. Another car channel but... Of a different type. Think you other car dudes would enjoy it
Agree 👍
I deliver packages to their office in NC
They seem to be doing very well if you ask me 🤷🏽♂️

When your CEO ditches you and starts his own brand of racing aside from the company in which was named after his family name, should say everything about your job in terms of the confidence he has in you.
Exactly what I was thinking...
naming it after himself tells you a lot about the egos of ceos
Not only that but how companies work, with so much administration and focus on profit, this entitys became an afthertough, and akio being raicing enthusiast knew that if they wanted to put sports cars again they needed a leaner, secret team away from the corporativism, no company would make a Gr yaris competitor as toyota did, completley from the ground up, expensive materiars, awesome engine, lightweight drivetrain, coupe form, price at a resoable price but with more punch that whats spected
@@richardtickler8555 what would you call your company. Personally I would rather buy from someone who wants to take credit for a job well done.
@Richard Tickler No! it shows commitment. who would name the company after himself/herself and let it rot?

So many motorsports history has been going away one after another this year, be it company or person
TRD still is active in the USA with nascar and offroad racing
Blame government and epa standards with not wanting “ unsafe” cars or cars that put out too much emissions, they want everyone driving the same boring stock economy car. Suspension mods are deemed unsafe and power mods are deemed to put out too much emissions over the stock variant
At a drive through behind me there was an Acura TSX with a TRD sticker on the windshield.

We called trd sportipu(means trd sport fake)
@@eriksantoso1741 riced honda brio be like
That is in the US too. The last thing TRD did here was the Tundra supercharger from factory. They ended that a while ago. Now its all for trucks and suspension.

Japanese automobile companies use to change their sub-brand names time to time.
To me, TRD is just another page of the history book, and GR is the opening of the new chapter.
Absolutely agree with you there! I think GR has the ability to take Toyota very far
Gazoo, it just sound so stupid. There's M, AMG, RS Quattro, GT3/4, Type R, NISMO, SRT, STi.... then there's Gazoo.
that's intelligent of your part, i didn't know how to put it in words (at least not in english lol), but for me the GR division is THE new TRD, with upgrades over regular vehicles as well as original creations for motorsports
TRD made a version of the Matrix too.
You aren't helping
I have a Pontiac Vibe (Matrix with a Pontiac styled exterior and built by NUMMI in Freemont California). I started wanting to do something to it, and found that Hellwig no longer made anti-sway bars for it, however the TRD kits for the Corolla (which were actually Hellwig parts) was still available, and since the Corolla and Matrix (and Vibe, and Geo/Chev Prizim) all share the same platform, the bars fit. I added those and a bar that spans the top of the shock towers. That was TRD's contribution to my car.
@@CharlesinGA Very cool, I have the XRS with the same strut on the shock towers, fun cars, and practical too!
I loved my TRD Matrix. It was hilariously underpowered and loved to drift on dirt and snow with little speed required. Going up a lengthy hill I had to take the truck climbing lanes in 3rd gear being passed by said trucks.
Meanwhile, my new Honda Civic can easily take the same hills accelerating in 6th gear, but can't drift for shit even with TC/ESC disabled.
this was a donut media level video in terms of story telling, editing, research, presentation, and even music. amazing video bro you really deserve more recognition!
It is kinda weird they use GR instead of TRD when they practically did/do the same thing.
I mean, I guess the name change makes sense....GR sounds more aggressive than TRD, which happens to sound like "TURD".
@@MaddNomad1015 Toyota USA doesn't like the Gazoo racing name since it is very japanese, and TRD USA still does nascar, offroading, etc. It is a very confusing relationship between TRD and GR right now.
