Anyone remember the Corolla T-Sport compressor that Japan and Europe got back in the early 2000’s? I think it had a 2ZZ with a supercharger making something like 220hp
My family owned one with full TRD kit, it was very neat and different car (compared to MB's or BMW's everyone else had). Father later sold it for 2x what he paid for it... and immediately regretted it.
2002 T sport without compresor or turbo 1.8 NA 192hp, rev up to 8250 and sound amyzing developed with yamaha. Fun starts after 6200rpm when Lift(similar to honda vtec but stronger) kick in and develp max power at 7800rpm. 6 speed manual... And real hand break... Anyone interested to buy.
The starlet GT turbo was also available in Europe Toyota came back to WRC in the late 90s with the Corolla The homologation special version of the GT-FOUR was the one with only 2500 units made. The normal GT-4 is way more common
before the gr yaris gazoo also made the yaris grmn on the previous platform, it wasn't as cool as the gr yaris but it was still a little cool car... that the US also didn't get
Many of the cars you listed not sold in the US market were manual transmission only and compact. My guess is the manufacturers didn't think there was enough of a market for these as the majority of cars are automatic full sized
I'm in the UK and own a GR Yaris, bloody awesome on narrow twisty crappy UK roads, not sure it would suit all the wide straight roads of the US. Feel your pain not having a chance to own one though. Hope they get it right with the Corolla. Maybe they'll do a hot estate I can put my dogs in? Good video 👍
Toyota has an emission compliance 2.0L that would work really good in the current Corolla, they just don't use it, the 8AR-FTS.They stuck it in a cross over💢
I know for a fact I would, owning a GR Yaris and a cheaper Crew Cab truck? That's all you need in America. Also keep in mind that a huge segment of America is living in a relatively urban/suburban area and claiming they need a truck or a big car at all is just false.
There were more than 2500 ST205's built, it was in production from 1994 - 1999. The 2500 number comes from the homologation cars which had plumbing for an anti-lag system, a water spray bar among other things and was called GT-Four WRC
We had those Starlets here in Austalia. Although they may have been second hand imports. This is a reasonable prospect because in both Austalia and and Japan we have right hand drive cars and drive on the left hand side of the road.
The US market gets the Civic Si. Japan doesn’t. It is equivalent to the Golf GTI being sold in the US but not Germany. Cars are cheaper in the US. Japanese cars are cheaper in the US. Imagine American cars made in the US being cheaper than imported US cars in Japan. Most Japanese people pay close to USD40,000 for a 2022 brz or USD (highest spec of course) - because the navigation or even the audio system doesn’t come with the car. Also we have to pay for the car carpets separately. Also Japanese incomes are lower than American ones. So the thing is - while we may get better things, we can hardly afford them.
the yaris/vitz had a much richer sport history than "just a subcompact and lets rally it" since '99....from the Vitz Cup models to first 1.5 Turbo models across 2 generations to japan's 3rd gen GR models playing with different aero and engines (1.5turbo to the 1.8 supercharged also found in S3 lotus elise) to the rare GRMN 1.8 europe models..
The weird thing about the new Yaris is that IT IS SOLD IN THE US but isn't listed on their website. I cant find any info about it being sold in the US but i've seen at least a dozen driving around the US with US plates

The GR Yaris is not only not available in the States, it's not available anywhere now. They sold out in July '21. luckily I ordered mine in June, and it was due to be delivered this June... but now it's delayed to like October. they are going to make a final run of 500 GRMN Yaris for the Japan only market and also a 2 wheel drive less powerful GR Yaris, I believe for the Japan market only? Great video bud.. you covered Toyota's recent history really well.. thanks!!
Super presentation. Well put together ! I thoroughly enjoyed this video. The world got the Yaris, after it won the Gold Steering award in Europe. I had the four-door sedan, a simple super-reliable car with a 1300cc engine. Excellent handler. In Japan the same car came with a 1500cc (1NZFE) engine, sold as the Belta. The 2-door & 4-door hatchback was sold there as the Vitz in 1,000, 1300 & 1500cc engine sizes. The sporty hatchback, the Vitz RS had traction control, rear discs, came as 2 or 4 door, in Auto or manual Transmission. In 2001, you could buy a 2-door, manual 1500cc VVTI (1NZFE) with a Turbo and Intercooler ! Since the Vitz came on the market in Japan, all three iterations of the tiny hatch could be bought with a Turbo Intercooled engine ! When Toyota re-entered the Rally competitions, the Hatchback GRMN (GAZOO RACING MASTER of the NURBURGRING) Yaris (Vitz) had an 1800cc (2ZRFE) supercharged motor. The domestic street-legal Japanese GRMN (NCP-131 model Vitz) came with a 1500cc Turbo (INZFE) motor. I have seen the 1800cc street-legal version Vitz being sold in Japan. In recent years the epic GR Yaris has evolved with more horsepower with a new 3-cylinder 1600cc engine. This car that have rally-enthusiasts by the balls, is what is featured in the latter half of this video. I used to import used Japanese cars in my country, and our family had the 4-door hatchback Vitz RS in the first (NCP13) and third (NCP131) iterations. Both had Automatic transmissions. In my opinion, after importing hundreds of cars from Japan, the Yaris/Vitz cars are some of the most durable and reliable cars that Toyota ever made. Oh ! The Yaris was sold as the Echo in some countries. The nice part ? Each citizen in my country is allowed to import a new or used car every 4 years ! Trinidad & Tobago. West Indies.
This video looks more like a motivational video :) In any case, again a great video / documentary with a lot of data that we, as "ordinary" car enthusiasts, do not notice. As a long-time driver of various Toyota models, including the Celica, I hope there will be more good cars because real drivers who enjoy driving need it.
10:28 Going to point out that that isn't the most powerful 3 cylinder. Title goes Koenigsegg Gemera's 3 banger. Now we'll probably never see one of those damn cars randomly on the street but gotta give props to Christian for giving us something to dream about.
The gr yaris is definitely one of my dream cars. An absolute pocket rocket. A bit too expensive right now but hopefully the prices will fall, then ill definitely get one. Funnily enough I view it as almost a successor to the starlet glanza v. A small, light weight turbo charged 3 pot. Except this time it has awd. The only complaint I have really is the rear end looks a bit ugly, but the front is amazing. I remember when I saw one at a wrap shop I was just stunned at how agressive it looks. I hope the gr corolla is going to be just as cool for you yanks.
Hopefully Toyota don’t follow a similar to route with the GR badge as Subaru has done with the STI branding and create STi versions of the Forester and Levorg in our market where the only add ons were the badge and a bit of sporty trim
North Americans have themselves to blame for the Yaris GR-Four not been sold here. Because of everybody's obsession with big ridiculous unnecessary vehicles they can't really afford, people chose to ignore the sub compact car market. And because of this all of those cars went away, including the Yaris. The fact of the matter is Toyota is not going to spend thousands of dollars to certify a car they are only going to sell a few of, one fact everyone is missing is this, in every country that the Yaris GR-Four is sold in they have the regular Yaris, the GR-Four came through the door on the back of the regular Yaris certification, that's how we got the Focus ST, Focus RS, Fiesta ST, Civic Type-R etc.
When listening to this video- I can only think of the 'what if's' from nearly every car manufacturer that isn't American! While yes we have muscle cars- the rest of the world has unique style, simpler reliability and ingenious components that defy time and modern cars! I for one think that if Toyota regulated the GR Yaris for U.S. standards then Toyota would have a following in regards to the MK4 Supra! (But we'll definitely get a de-tuned engine 🙄!) Yet the GR Corolla maybe what we wanted but just bit heavier? I'm juxstaposed but I'm also excited to see what Toyota can do. Plus also I have to be patient the car crisis is putting a clamp on just about...everything [Regarding automotive industry].
At 53 years old, I still would drop everything for the GR Yaris! (except my Land Cruiser of corse.). And I still hope Toyota brings it to North America.(Canada).
Let's say the Toyota GR Yaris comes to US. Than some journalistic automotive hack will lay his mittens on that car. 50% of the article he will write, will be dedicated to the infotainment, the size of the screen and the functions of the programs. 45% will be dedicated to the size and comfort of the seats, outward visibility, materials used inside the cabin and available colors. Somewhere hidden towards the end he might mention the size and specs of the engine and drivetrain.
I drive the GR Yaris for 9 month now and I'm very happy with it. It's an everyday Rallycar, a bit weak under 3000 rpm, but very powerful in higher rpm and the AWD works like a dream, you can't compare to any other AWD hatchback. Since October 2021, you can't order the GR Yaris from Europe, but Toyota will still deliver all ordered cars up to summer 2023... I think Toyota is beliving in old cliches that people of the US only drive huge cars with huge motors. Greeting from Germany!
To be fair, there's some truth in that. The SUV/Crossover/Trucks segment absolutely dominate the NA market with the RAV4 as Toyota's best selling model there, while small hatchbacks like the Yaris or even Ford's Fiesta ST doesn't sell all that well.
@@SUMOCAT86 okay, ordering in germany is closed since october 2021, but on the Toyota website, it still looks like you can have one. People who ordered it in september 2021 get there car in summer 2023 delivered, maybe...
you don't need to refer to the J70 land cruiser in past tense, they still make them in quite large numbers for the Australian, Middle-eastern, and African market.
The car costs around $55.000 in Indonesia with only 126 unit available and instantly sold out even before the car reached the country. Right now some owners sell it about $80.000, dang
Hi. Nice work on that video. I just wanted to mention few details about toyota's engagelent in rallye. After the celica GT4 group A, toyota came back to wrc after their 1 year ban form the FIA. They actulally came back with the corolla wrc during the second half of the nineties. They wasn't as dominant as they used to be with the celica, but still they won some rallyes with the corolla. Only after that they left for a while till recently.
They've announced this GR Corolla when I bought my Veloster N back in 2019. It's already 2022 and Hyundai has 2 more N cars out, the Elantra N and Kona N. 3 N cars are already out and Toyota is just starting to tease a GR Corolla... Keep in mind that Hyundai is a company that isn't known for making enthusiast cars and yet, here we are with 3 N cars out. But Toyota keeps limp dicking the NA market of these fun cars that we are asking for. Hell, Mexico got a limited run of the GR Yaris just for asking and even South Korea got the car too. Me and a couple other enthusiast aren't holding our breaths anymore Toyota. No, we don't want a Subaru 86 nor a BMW Supra. We want something 100% Toyota.
I'm from South Africa and one of my friends owns a Yaris GR and man is it fun to drive! This little hatch punches above its weight and gives cars like Golf Gti's a good run for their money.
In the UK, they had a 1.8L back in 2006. And then there was a 1.8L supercharged GRMN back in 2018 that was available in the UK and Japan. There's apparently new GRMN coming out in Japan. The Yaris is kind of popular in Japan and the UK. Its mostly about marketing and lifestyle. I used to drive a NCP93 1.5L and I loved it. It was fun; the lightweight made it fun for what it was. Not to mention, getting around the city was a lot easier. I own a FK4 now, which I also love/hate (honestly, you can't enjoy something if you don't have things that you don't like about it). But if I were tobe able to drive manual, I would go back to a Yaris. It's not a touring car, but it's the fun little car from point a to point b. I'm also an Evo fan girl, so the Yaris is the little gem in my heart :')
At the very least, we got the focus for a hot minute. The good one haha. That quickly got pulled from under our feet. You didn’t however touch on Papadakas(sp?) Racing and I’m curious as to why? Good episode sir
Since the first generation of the Toyota Vitz (Yaris in non-JDM) there has always been a 4WD version. As a matter of fact, almost all Toyota's JDM models have a 4WD version. Any model number ending with 5, is a 4WD, like NSP135. Toyota has many nice models, which are only sold in Asian markets. Many minivans that are practical but still fun to drive. Many also have a Gazoo version, even though it's mostly cosmetic with a little bit of suspension tuning.
I hope you guys get it. Everything you said about The GR Yaris is right. I pre ordered mine, in Oz they gave a huge discount on first 1000, gone in 6 days. I was VERY lucky.

Great video but you forgot a few important things: 1. The Yaris was always available as a two-door 2. 2017 Yaris GRMN 1.6l Supercharged 212hp, europe and japan 3. 2004 Corolla TS 1.8l Supercharged 225hp, europe 4. 2004 Yaris TS 1.5l Turbo 150hp, europe and at last there will be a 2022 Yaris GRMN with more carbon as a japan exclusive

The starlet GT turbo was also available in Europe
Toyota came back to WRC in the late 90s with the Corolla
The homologation special version of the GT-FOUR was the one with only 2500 units made. The normal GT-4 is way more common
This one hurt too much…
A small pocket rocket available when Toyota removed the Yaris line from the US.
😢
At least they’re making a GR Corolla that’s going to be AWD:)
@@lamesamelame Granted it made financial sense; but the timing is what gets me in all honesty.
before the gr yaris gazoo also made the yaris grmn on the previous platform, it wasn't as cool as the gr yaris but it was still a little cool car... that the US also didn't get
Many of the cars you listed not sold in the US market were manual transmission only and compact.
Thanks for watching Graeme! We have twisty B roads too!! Just not as common as in the UK. We do have plenty of racing circuits though!
I own two 5th Gen celicas, it was my very first car and I always get so hyped when somebody talks about the GR Yaris, I just love it
The GR Corolla is going to be the best thing Toyota did for America since the MK4 Supra.
Toyota as "boring" as any car company. I think everyone heard about cool Toyota cars
To add more confusion, at Southeast Asia, we have another Yaris based on another chassis 🤣🤣🤣
Hahaha the vios
@@coffeebomb_35 SEA gang 😎😎
Toyota has an emission compliance 2.0L that would work really good in the current Corolla, they just don't use it, the 8AR-FTS.They stuck it in a cross over💢
Be honest: How many people would buy a B segment car in the US for 30k?
I know for a fact I would, owning a GR Yaris and a cheaper Crew Cab truck? That's all you need in America.
Also keep in mind that a huge segment of America is living in a relatively urban/suburban area and claiming they need a truck or a big car at all is just false.
Y’all complaining we didn’t even get the 88, Camry, supra (except the a70), celicas before the fwd ones, Avalon, tundra, Tacoma…
There were more than 2500 ST205's built, it was in production from 1994 - 1999. The 2500 number comes from the homologation cars which had plumbing for an anti-lag system, a water spray bar among other things and was called GT-Four WRC
Thanks for mentioning the Starlet GT Turbo :D Finally some long-due recognition for the 90's hot hatch!
Why wasnt the Group-A Corrolla mentioned?
We had those Starlets here in Austalia. Although they may have been second hand imports. This is a reasonable prospect because in both Austalia and and Japan we have right hand drive cars and drive on the left hand side of the road.
As long as we get the gr corrolla we’re good
🤞🤞
lord chungus speaks the truth again
Can you do a special on the 1990 Lexus LS 400? That's the best Toyota built car ever, in my opinion.
You forgot to mention the corolla ae111 hatchback wrc car. The corolla with the gt4 drive train and all wheel drive system.
The weird thing about the new Yaris is that IT IS SOLD IN THE US but isn't listed on their website. I cant find any info about it being sold in the US but i've seen at least a dozen driving around the US with US plates
Toyota: "No more boring cars"
Also Toyota: Releases Corolla Crossover SUV
But across the lineup , cars have improved to become driver focused and they introduced 2 sports car and now their are news they well make a new MR2
Amazing presentation skills! You got me full attention.
Wow..I love the way how you capture the viewers attention..amazing job with the scripts and editing.😊
Man I just keep coming back to this video, I've watched it probably 3 times over in the last few weeks, you're absolutely killing it with the content, love the emphasis on the history and the storytelling. 10/10
Thank you Richard!
This video looks more like a motivational video :)
In any case, again a great video / documentary with a lot of data that we, as "ordinary" car enthusiasts, do not notice.
I'm just happy the corolla is gonna be a sportscar again. People forget that nameplate's legacy is in racing.
but that's a Nissan at 0:12 ... a Gloria Y33 to be specific
The writing is absolutely exhilarating!! Thank yiu
This thumbnail did not really make me want to click. But then I saw "Albon" and knew it would be good regardless!
This is good to know! Perhaps I will change it!
15:20
Guff: I 'bout lost my damn mind when I heard that.
Captions: I lost my shit when I heard this.
Hopefully Toyota don’t follow a similar to route with the GR badge as Subaru has done with the STI branding and create STi versions of the Forester and Levorg in our market where the only add ons were the badge and a bit of sporty trim
a GR Corolla sneaking in the background with camo is so cute, it's literally like a chubby cute monster sneaking it's bigger brother
Still can’t believe that we didn’t get the Lexus GS with the 2JZGTE like the Aristo
In Ireland, we've imported 86s for rallying and others for rallying. It's up there with the Ford Escort here.
Just got my GR Yaris here in the UK. OMG, what a car!! I hope you guys Stateside enjoy your Corollas this much!!
Yes , I have been waiting for you to post
Alfa Romeo won’t sell us the Giulia GTa or GTa-M, Audi won’t sell us the RSQ3.
Those would be awesome!
If the GR Corolla is a watered down version of the GR Yaris, I'll just have to wait till I'm fucking 50 years old to import the GR Yaris 😑
Asian not import camero 1le
Maybe wait 50 year
@@simp2234 that car has AWFUL blind spots
@@AbrahamArthemius And the GR Yaris is only available with manuel transmission and the NA market prefers automatic too, I think...
I ordered one in November and we can still order them here in Finland. I guess the country allocations are not full yet.
@@SUMOCAT86 okay, ordering in germany is closed since october 2021, but on the Toyota website, it still looks like you can have one. People who ordered it in september 2021 get there car in summer 2023 delivered, maybe...
America couldn't handle the manual gearbox in the Yaris. They're lucky to not have that 3 cylinder engine anyway.
Trains are pretty cool too, also don’t have high speed rail in the US
you don't need to refer to the J70 land cruiser in past tense, they still make them in quite large numbers for the Australian, Middle-eastern, and African market.
I really wish they'd make the GR Corolla a 2 door like they did for the GR Yaris
5:20 In europe we have it the other way around, we have a Mazda 2, which is a rebadged JP/EU Yaris.
The US hardly gets anything good anymore (not just with Toyota but every other manufacturer)
Here in the Philippines we have gr yaris,
Would pronounce the gr yaris as a kid not behaving, sounding mean & agressively on the road
Imagine if the Celica gets a comeback to rally that would be worth watching and it would mark a history in Toyota as well
I've been following the GR corolla for 2 years and I'm BEGGING Toyota to just give it to us. I NEED IT!
Many also have a Gazoo version, even though it's mostly cosmetic with a little bit of suspension tuning.
im afraid you are right when you said it would be a watered down version of the yaris. just cool enough to remind us what we are truly missing.
*BRING THE CROWN TO THE USA.* 👑
There is another Yaris based on Toyota Vios sold in Southeast Asia
nah toyota just doesn't want to bear the shame for letting dealerships sell their best car at triple the price
I hope you guys get it. Everything you said about The GR Yaris is right.
I pre ordered mine, in Oz they gave a huge discount on first 1000, gone in 6 days. I was VERY lucky.
@Rafael Are you sure? AUD to USD averages 0.75 to the Dollar
We never thought them boring in UK . We allways got 3 lvls . Fuck that's quick for a 1.3 /1.6 super reliable econo box . Lvl 2 fuck that's really reliable for a 2.0 na hot hatch / cupe .
Lvl 3 4x4 turbo madness .
That's what Toyota means in UK .
Great video but you forgot a few important things:
1. The Yaris was always available as a two-door
2. 2017 Yaris GRMN 1.6l Supercharged 212hp, europe and japan
3. 2004 Corolla TS 1.8l Supercharged 225hp, europe
4. 2004 Yaris TS 1.5l Turbo 150hp, europe
and at last there will be a 2022 Yaris GRMN with more carbon as a japan exclusive
The Toyota GT4 got banned from WCR for having an illegal turbo cheating mechanism for I think two years
I personally can't wait for it's announcement.
Am I the only one who hates the US Toyota slogan. I don't want to go places. I want Toyotas Fun to drive, again.
yes I forgive Toyota because I'm not American and won't be able pay the price or pricetag with 300% tax
Here in Australia, it's cool we got the GR Yaris... it's just a pity it cost over $60k...
It's not really toyotas fault, America has difficult regulations that can cost up to 50million usd just to allow a production car to be street legal, if it was easy they would sell it.

Didn't watch the whole video, but just wanted to add that fact.
