Pastorius taught a course at University of Miami, ‘Modern electric bass’. He played this really simple, basic bass line and asked a student to play it. After about 10 mins, student asked ‘How long for, boss?’ ‘About 2 years’ sed Jaco.
Trio of Doom is of course named after Pastorius’ old Fender Jazz bass, the one he took the frets off, filled the holes in with Epoxy resin and called it The Bass of Doom.
If there’s altered extensions on the one chord sure I guess. Don’t get me wrong I love Jaco, but he really did step out of line on this gig. Still love the recording even though it’s kind of a mess.
No... Jaco had a manic meltdown. He probably wasn't listening to John and Tony. His brain was wired rapid cycling manic depressive or whatever the doctor said in the 2014 Jaco. Mania mixed with alcohol & blow is bad. These asshole doctors would say "take this pill for 2 months & see if it stabilizes you". People didn't really know what bipolar manic depression really was until the mid to late '90s. My mom was a career nurse & worked on a psych ward. She said there was a 40 something business man standing in the corner at the ward with no pants just talking jiberish. This is when they just discovered lithium in the late '50s. After that patient was stabilized, he was discharged & went back to his multi million dollar business he started. Bipolar manic depression is a tricky disease to stabilize.
I had one of the albums, (I don't remember anymore but I think it was a double album) precisely the one that this trio had, among other artists. The back cover was a photo of Jaco emerging from the water, after a dip in the sea. The other albums I don't remember arrived here in Brazil. I didn't even know Stephen Stills played at this festival.
There are two double albums, Havana Jam and Havana Jam 2. One is red and the other one is blue. One is more jazz oriented while the other one is a summary of what happened in that festival. Both are worth having.
...and here we are, Mr. McLaughlin, so many years after the Havana Jam - still talking about it and all because of Jaco's Genius. isn't it ironic? ps: can't wait to see the documentary!
dude had a meltdown, it's well documented, he was behaving like an asshole, two sides to Jaco, and the one that was on display in Cuba is the one that would eventually derail his career unfortunately, and we all wish things hadn't worked out that way.
About the Columbia CD release of the Trio Of Doom. This release in my opinion is legally very problematic. How do I know? Well, because Tony Williams himself told me so. In mid summer of 1980 I was at the Jazz Festival Muenster to see the Tony Williams Trio with Tom Grant and Patrick O'Hearn. I knew Tom Grant from many years before, so he was surprised and happy to see me there. He invited me to meet Tony backstage, because he knew that I'm a drummer. When we met, Tony was in extremely good and funny mood, making jokes and laughing out loud. Just a few days before I got the Havana Jam I & II albums. So I told Tony how much I liked his playing on these. "What are you talking about?" he was asking me. I said well, about the Havana Jam releases on Columbia. And Tony again: "I don't know this, what is that?". I told him it's the live recording of his Trio Of Doom with John and Jaco from Havana. Then immediately Tony's fun was gone. He said "What? The live recording of Trio Of Doom? Where did you get that from?" I said from a record store and that it was officially released by Columbia a few days ago (in Europe). And Tony again: "They've really released these recordings? Trio Of Doom? Are you sure?" I said "yes, I'm sorry, I just bought it in a store, it's called Havana Jam and Weather Report also is featured". "I didn't know this, never heard of that, no one told me, no one asked me for releasing that. Are they nuts? I didn't want this to be released!" I tell you Tony was very very angry and totally upset. The mood was gone and that's how the meeting with Tony has ended for me. But how could I know that Tony hated this Band? Because at the time we all didn't know about the disaster with Jaco in Havana. I came to have a nice relaxed meeting and at the end I gave really bad news without knowing it. So it's very clear, that Tony never would've agreed to release the CD from 2007. By the way, at the time it wasn't clear, that the tracks on the Havana Jam albums were only the studio recordings.
John and Tony especially Tony had tendencies to be very controlling and cruel ... That's what I sensed and read stories about ... You wonder why Tony really couldn't keep a band together ... I heard he gave the musicians in Miles band shit and some of them were 30 years older then him except for like Herbie who was like 5 years .. He either knew he was a severe kick ass drummer or he had severe problems... With John I found him to be a tense kind of guy like if something went wrong or if the wrong question was asked... Remember Mahavishnu quitting on him writing about him in a magazine... All this for 13 minutes of madness music ... It wasn't like a 2 hour concert ... 13 minutes.... Jaco just felt like doing what he wanted and fucked around probably because of the lame time frame... And also he playing with Weather report which I didn't even know they played at this festival... And isn't Jaco Cuban ?
Yeah, I've always thought so too. He's English (Yorkshire), yet has a subtle Middle Eastern inflection mixed with a little German. Like his playing style, he's a mixture of so many influences.
He's travelled a lot and spent a lot of time in different countries so I guess he's picked up a lot of different accents. I'm from Yorkshire (about 15 miles from where John was born)and he sounds nothing like me!
When I interviewed him, I told him I found a strong French accent, and he was surprised. Well, he lives in Monaco, so probably he's getting influenced by French.
The oversized ego of Mr Mclaughlin has been an obstacle to mclaughlin himself to become a better player.Miles Davis was capable of guide and direct the talent of John Mclaughlin,as is evident in any of those brilliant recordings. After Miles, mclaughlin evolved into something a little displeasant,to put it mildly
BS, Jaco's ego imploded in Cuba - ego, booze, coke, mania... this was the beginning of the end for him... well documented. Jaco was a legend, but there's two Jacos, and the one that turned up on stage that night, that was the one nobody liked. As for JMG, he has mellowed substantially over the years, any number of interviews on here, and he is nothing but humble and gracious, no matter who is talking to him, your hostility is misplaced I think.
There wasn't enough room on the stage for both their egos; something had to give. Throw in Jaco's coke and drinking and emerging bipolar and it was "doomed" to fail. And I say this as a 40+ year Jaco devotee.
Who cares at this Point. So you actually want Money to hear a Unprofessional Distorted Fartifact. Keep it! Who could tell Jaco was in a different Key? except for John and Tony. He knew what Key he was in . Lol
For me it was a totally given that Jaco came up with the name lol. And John’s whole story here just lovely and hilarious
Phenomenal name .....Trio of Doom......leave it up to Jaco
Doom of Whom? LOL

So he was playing A Ionian over C phrygian -- that's technically correct. Jaco was trying to expand the song's harmonic limitations. Genius.
If there’s altered extensions on the one chord sure I guess. Don’t get me wrong I love Jaco, but he really did step out of line on this gig. Still love the recording even though it’s kind of a mess.
They're completely unrelated keys. It would sound fucking horrible. I think you're confusing yourself there. You've got your modes all mixed up.

Why is it ironic? Most people thought the concert was a mess - John, Tony, Joe Zawinul and Peter Erskine, etc...

When are the trio of doom videos gonna come out??
Unfortunately, there are no videos of the Trio of Doom.
@@zudhanproductions7887 I guarantee that the Cuban government has multiple video from various angles. The Russian FSB probably has a tape, too. 🤔
I was there, at 18 y/o, in the Karl Marx theatre in Havana. The day before Jaco was a little less crazy, with Weather Report.
Yes, Jaco was a bit crazy, but with the Trio of Doom he was totally out of his mind.
Well, it was a great name. Come on, John...at least give Jaco that. 😉
What's the name of the song John talking about? Cm - A maj

Tony was so mad at Jaco he pinned him against the wall. That was an amazing feat because Tony is little and Jaco is 6 ft
But Jaco was so ashamed that he didn't do anything.

Jaco went off script and blew the performance. Total fiasco and shame. Tony Williams hated him until the day he died.

Sad part was that this was the first manifestation of Jaco's problems
Sadly it was.
The first big one. In Weather Report he was already having trouble.
Music's great as it is, is mixed on too loud to hear easily what John's saying. Rather irritating that.
