Great video Alain! I have a pastel artists Facebook group, Monet Café Art Group, where some of the lady members were excited to see some of your videos but also commenting on your good looks. I told them to calm down because you’re married!! Lol! Thanks for sharing your knowledge... love your teaching.
Susan Jenkins thanks for the kind and very funny comments, I’m blushing! Yes i am very happily married, thank goodness. Its been fun to start sharing more teaching here on UA-cam. Its a fun community of learning. Thanks for all you do to share the joy and beauty of pastel with others as well! All the best to you.
Thank you! Thank you!! THANK YOU! Your tips, your step-by-step approach has helped me so much I have recently received three commission paintings and sold one outright. Looking forward to being able to take a class with you in the next year.
I have spent last few days watching and reading of your approach and techniques and wondering where you have been all my life. Your transparency, honesty and ways of reassuring your students, Just made me feel so inspired. I will be starting tomorrow and following you closer. The way you explained pastels won my respect. So thankful !
Hi Teresa, thank you for your very kind comments, I"m so glad you found the videos! I wish you all the best in your creative development, keep in touch and know that I am rooting for you!
beautiful painting Alain. I did a couple of small pastel color studies to try to work out an acrylic painting i am struggling with (not too familiar with acrylic yet). They did give me a direction to head so...yay and thanks. I am soooo looking forward to your workshop in Napa Valley early May. thanks again and see you in Calif
pam walker thanks so much for leaving me a comment! Way to go, I'm thrilled that you are putting the 5 tips to work! I'm also looking forward to meeting you in CA! It's going to be a great workshop!
Really nice Alain, I got my breakthrough a couple of month ago regarding the values, now with color I struggle here and there and this video helped me to remember some key things about it. Thanks for the video, keep it up. :)
Love your videos. Definitely one of the better teachers out there. Small tip: you might want to put a link to both your website (to sign up to get the free videos) and the link to sign up for your classes in person under the "about" section on each video. Having a link available directly under the video should help web traffic and possibly sign ups. Hope to see many more videos from you in the future and you need way more followers!
Thank you very much, l'm a great admirer of your art and your way, and happy for to have the opportunity to watch and learn! You make a very good job 💜
Alain, thanks for your very helpful videos which are helping me make some progress with the medium I love. One thing I have trouble with is identifying warm and cool colors. I can see that generally, bright red and orange are warm colors, blues and greens are cool, but I can't seem to see cool reds or warm greens. I assume that cooler red tends more toward the blue or violet range, but the subtle nuances seem to escape me. Any suggestions on how to identify them more easily? Thanks in advance.
Absolutely love all your videos. I have been oil painting for over 5 years and my instructor suggested that I explore pastels and it was love! I have a 120 half stick Sennelier set, a 90 Rembrandt set and a 30 Faber-Castel set. My Sennelier set is used the most. I am finding that I might need more colours such as greys. I’m not sure if this is my desire to get more delicious pastels, or an actual need. Lol Would it be a good investment? Our selection in Ottawa, Canada is limited. But I found a store in Southern Ontario with some Diane Townsend. Some day I hope to attend your workshop. You are awesome.
Glad you are enjoying pastels Julie! Does www.dakotapastels.com ship to you in Canada? They are up toward the border of B.C. on the west coast, and have everything. More neutrals are a wonderful addition to the pastel set. Did you download my Pastels Guide yet? It may help you. All the best!
Thank you Alain, I enjoy your videos very much and always take away something. Can you please help me find the ones you mention about underpaintings - I searched the word 'underpainting' but didn't get any results. Thank you!
Alain, all of your videos are so good. I've watched all the ones on artistsnetwork.tv. Somewhere you made a comment about shadows, and I can't find it again; but you talked about what colors make up shadows. So simple, yet I can'r remember it! If you know what I'm talking about, could you give me that description again?
I have recently started doing sketches/studies in Photoshop or Corel Painter software. I feel that approach is a little flexible and allows me to access reference images while I am working and do corrections without fear. I have never tried doing physical studies before as I am a little lazy. Must give it a shot. I have just come across your channel and will go through your videos to learn more. Thank you again for your lessons.
Thanks for your feedback Xiao Hei. Doing physical studies is a lot like having a practice stage for your painting in a smaller scale. It helps work through some of the physical issues you'll face in the process of painting as well as the visual problems that need to be solved. I would say that your process is great using technology, and adding the method of a small study will help think through application of marks and the description of color/value on the physical surface. All the best!
As someone who has waited decades (Im 70) to actually try to see what I can do, I find your videos very helpful. Thank you!

Thank you Gerry! Yes, painting is a dance between the artist and the surface. Can be very exciting! All the best to you in your work!

What paper do you use for your value sketch and your color study?
Thank you Alain, I enjoy your videos very much and always take away something. Can you please help me find the ones you mention about underpaintings - I searched the word 'underpainting' but didn't get any results. Thank you!
Thank you Angie, you can find the underpainting videos here: mailchi.mp/46c0c874901f/underpainting-course
