That’s why copper bullets of the same weight as a lead core bullet needs a tighter twist, because it is longer.

Ron, it would be nice if you touched upon hearing protection while elk hunting. Brake, no brake? Can? Ear plugs around neck, or new electronic ear buds?

I’m very interested in the deer boot camp. Where would it be and what would it cost? Also, would it be appropriate for someone who is somewhat mobility impaired? Got bad back and knee (thanks Army), usually walk with a cane, and long treks in rough country would not be doable for me.

For the fellow in South Africa, I would suggest rebarreling the 30-06. Although he could just use the old 30-06 chamber, since he will be using a gunsmith, I could suggest a barrel with an improved chamber containing a section of snug freebore to make finding an accurate load easier.

    Hi Ron,
I enjoy your Rocky Mtn. perspective and first-hand knowledge; however, what about giving the larger bodied Roosevelt elk some exposure? Expand everyone's horizons in the process. Oregon ranks #3 in total elk populations @135,000, @75,000 Rocky Mtn. elk in Central and Eastern Oregon, and @60,000 Roosevelt elk in Western Oregon, most of those are in the Oregon Coast Range rain forests, and most of those ore in NW Oregon.
It would be great to see you in a dedicated episode about the Rosies, their habitat and their hunters. There are guides that can help you with your hunt (please Ron, not on a game farm) in the wilds of BLM or Weyerhaeuser (private lands for a premium fee) lands. There are plenty of units to choose from in the Oregon Coast range, from the Tioga in the South (I hunted extensively in the 70's as a young man) to the Saddle Mtn. in the North.
I want to see you toil and trudge through rain and wind for hours, but having a blast with us- not the ritzy game farm dispatchers; we want to see you relate with us as true hunters who have to scout, research on maps, plan and prepare for our annual blessed event for just four short days during the first season or just seven days during the second season, you have to choose which season, but you'd be limited to a spike during the second season.
I choose the first season because I earn it with my scouting, intimate knowledge of the BLM land and the timing and location of the local herd. I hunt in the Trask, known for some 900+# monster bulls, there are four bulls in this herd of @30 I've been hunting, one is @800# and another pushing 750#. The 800 pounder is amazing with its bulk and battle scars and shows no signs of slowing down. This motivates me and getting out there in the wild with only me to account for my success. I love you Ron and your viewers. Have a great elk season, wherever you choose this year.
Btw, I hunt with a Savage M-110 “Weather Warrior” all stainless; I rebarreled her from a 300WM to 7mm SAUM and hand load with H4831SC and 175 gn. Nosler Partitions- excellent sectional density and integrity.

The type of school or camp that Tate offers is sorely needed. Thank you for participating with Tate and Joseph to help get this off the ground. Tell Tate to keep this going . I like live in Virginia and did not grow up hunting. Did not start until my mid forties. With the rapid increase in the cost of Western big game hunting, many working class people in the East and South are more hesitant to go due to the total cost of a trip and our lack of knowledge of the game we want to hunt and not being familiar with the state or area we want to hunt. More western state legislatures seem to be anti-hunting with unjustified cost and allocation of tags. I would recommend you do a mule deer boot camp or at least help Tate with his camps. I hope to take one or more of my kids out to his elk camp to learn more and hunt effectively. Love for show , keep up the fight.

Hi Ron, I have long been interested in target shooting, but haven't ever gotten into it because I am a bit sensitive to loud noises (I used to wear ear protection when shooting my BB gun as a kid!). Are there any full-ish power cartridges that have a reputation for having an unusually quiet report? I am thinking maybe something like a 6.5x55 Swede might not be quite so loud with its lower pressures and smaller bore? If I got a rifle with a long barrel (26?) and a suppressor, how quiet might it be?
I know I could always go with an intermediate cartridge or pistol cal but they don't interest me as much.
    Thanks, Seth
(I should note that I am a machinist, so assembling my own rifle doesn't scare me)

Hi Ron.....so, If the 7mm-08 is effective on everything up to Elk, is it also just as effective on Moose and bears?

    • @johnnash5118
      @johnnash5118 13 днів тому +1

That depends on the range; just look at the ballistics chart to see where the max range for the needed velocity to adequately expand the bullet is (typically @1800-2200fps,) which also needs a bullet with adequate integrity to not fragment. Even a 30-30 could be used, but not over @100 yards.

I'm coming around full circle. All this recent sniping at big game business even had me sipping the Cool Aid! Turns out I prefer hunting over sniping. For me, all these semi-tactical hunting rifles with telescopes and long cans are a turn-off. Unless one is a sniper shooting big game beyond 600 yards, I find simple is better. My Old School, come what may elk gun, is a used stainless Remington 700 in 300 RUM, with Leupold VX2 3-9X40 Duplex scope. It's rubber Hogue Overmold stock tames recoil. Because I prefer not to use brakes, I cut it off and re-crowned the now 25-inch barrel to 11 degrees. I installed a Trigger Tech trigger and Speedlock firing pin. I also lapped the bolt lugs. The BDL box magazine/floorplate holds 3 down. This tough and reliable rifle with beauty marks is a shooter, and I sight in 180 grain bullets for a 300-yard zero while knowing my holds at 400 and a bit beyond. Very little thinking involved. I concentrate more on wind and placing good shots. Out to 300+ yards, I just aim and shoot. It's medium weight but balanced well. This is a serious hunting tool. But in black timber, I very much like my lightweight Mossberg stainless color Ceracote in 375 Ruger. This elk thumper wears a Trijicon 3-9X40 Accupoint with a lit green triangle on a post. It's fast, placing the triangle tip on exactly where one wants a hit. For my do lots rifle, I'm building a custom 6lb 7PRC with 22-inch carbon barrel barrel. It has titanium action and will be my favorite with the best of the best parts. This rifle currently is a 300 RUM, and I just ordered the replacement 7PRC barrel today. Yup, a 6lb RUM is a bit much! For general elk hunting, though, and based on experience, I have soft spots for 338 Win Mag and 35 Whelen. Are they needed? Perhaps. Elk hunting is tough and expensive these days, and I see thumpers as putting the odds in one's favor. I once used a 338 at 175 yards on a bull elk. Chest/lung shot. 250 Nosler partition. It instantly dumped the elk! I once shot a moose 400 yards off-hand through the heart, with my scope set at 4X!

People claiming their thing is the best and everyone is an idiot, that's the whole point of the Internet Ron! Don't take this from us!
Speaking of "how to start hunting"-class. In Sweden, you're not allowed to get a gun for hunting unless you've participated in a Hunters course, and passed both theoretical and practical tests. So while you might have opinions on the gun ownership parts of it, we know that a new hunter showing up will have some basic knowledge and safe gun handling. Which is always good.

Ron, whenever you compare a magnum length cartridge with a standard or shorter cartridge you say that the shorter cartridge leads to a shorter/easier to handle rifle, which makes sense, but how much shorter are we talking? 1 inch total? 4 inches? How much? And does it really make a noticeable difference when hiking or shooting?
