    Mitsubishi now is unrecognizable from what it was. EVO, Eclipse, 3000GT, galant VR4, even off road beasts like the Pajero EVO. Absolutely awesome cars all gone

      Old japanese management scared of change and trying new things have really backed them into a corner. They really have no reason to exist, they won't even do a hot hatch Mirage. The Mirage weighs less than a ton it would only take 120-150Hp to make it fly.

      Manufacturers pushed larger vehicles, they pushed the market away from cars.
      Which, of course they did it because there's more profit in larger and more expensive vehicles.

    *200 HP and 205 Lbs. ft torque is not slow or weak. People need to remember the 1980s.*
    *Cars were offered with as little as 66 HP. A performance variant of compact or mid size cars were typically no higher than 180 HP.*

    I grew up doing my homework in a corner in a Mitsubishi dealerships service department while my dad turned wrenches. By 2003 I was actually working as a service advisor for Mitsubishi and we've had one of just about everything Mitsubishi ever made (except the Evo unfortunately) and the 3rd Gen eclipse suffered from being watered down Chrysler crap. That said the second gen eclipse with the Chrysler 420a is probably the worst car they ever made. The 3rd and 4th Gen just lost the high strung turbo coupe soul that helped the eclipse dominate the sports car market for years.

      The Dodge engine isn't the best I agree but it has some potential, remember the 4G63 had oil issues that Mitsubishi didn't repair and the owners were left with a 2G brick 🤨

    Enjoy the 3rd Gen GT, I loved and enjoyed all of mine.
    I bought 3 of them, 01 Eclipse Spyder GT w/ RIPP Supercharger and basically built it to look the the 2Fast Eclipse just not Purple. Left the Paint to the Factory 3 layer Pearl White paint. I bought 2 more all at the same time, Black 03 GT the daily and 05 GTS pretty much the track toy. The 6G72 is basically the same motor out of 3000GT. If I had enough money, I've always wanted to a 3000GT VR-4 swap.
    Fun note, I did this to my 01 FBO Spyder, if you don't like the ribbed doors, swap the doors from a Stratus around the same year, literally plug and play door swap.
    I absolutely love the 3rd gens, I also love my 4g's with 5 SPD Man. I have also enjoyed and dearly miss all of my 2nd gens. I had 95 GS, then 97 GS-T and then 99 GSX.

    Brendan, these are underrated cars from those of us that like them, sure it had styling cues from others around it, simple to say used the best at the time, this is like a Toyota V6 , only in the sense that it is underrated by Mitsubishi when it was new, at the same time it had unbelievable longevity, you could rev it to its redline all day long do regular scheduled maintenance and no issues, some came in on trade at local dealers here in Canada, trade in values weren't high although they drove like a 4 year old GT car and had 380,000 kms on the clock, that's almost 240,000 miles and this car went to be sold to a young guy for his first car, tons of stories like this, you could drive these all day long at 120 kph /75mph and get 30mpg you can never go wrong with that, tunes, A/C, Cruise set, just go, 👍

    Back in the day, I worked for a Mitsubishi Chrysler Jeep Eagle dealership. So, I sold the Talon, the Laser, and the Eclipse. And damn those things were easy to sell. I'm a 3000GT man myself. But sometimes you just want a practical car that is fun to drive. I think that's what they were shooting for with the Gen 3.

    Bought a 2001 GT Spyder 5 speed with the sun and sound package 2 months ago. Just put 2g in engine, about $1600 in underbody welds and rust reformation. Up next, a purple paint job.
    It was owned 20 years by a gal who garaged it. Engine is tight, clutch is new, she did a lot of suspension and steering work. I think its sharp as Hell, better looking than all the new pricey German drop tops i see. In the end ill spend over 10g in purchase and restoration. To me thats cheap money for a sharp resto summer ride you dont see everyday in top trim.

    4g64 is the 4 cylinder and it’s easy to do a head swap and all the parts bolt on from 4g63t so you can get a bigger displacement 4g63t if you choose to build it like so

    As a 3g owner. I would recommend the 4 cylinder over the V6 anyday. You can actually DOHC swap these motors and just have a 2.4L 4g63. Yes they are turbo capable. The difference between the 4g63 vs the 4g64 is the displacement and the stroke. A lot of the DSM & Evo guys actually will grab these motors because they know this and make their 2.4L 4g63.

    got a 3g 02 RS ( 4 cylinder ) it's alright. Use mine as a daily but bought it because it was cheap, not too many people in my state have eclipses and just wanted something different then what everyone else is running. is it fast? no mine is pretty much stock, is it reliable? mine has been thus far with minor easy to fix issues. plan to keep it as a daily for now then hopefully some day strip it and redo everything. Was the same with the celica here few years ago now they are starting to blow up again and i see so many celicas now days of all gens. will probably hold out for an EVO or 2g gsx if i get another mitsubishi otherwise try something else like an STI or something. i like the 3g style over 4g but either way i see so many 4g owners here of any gen i still pull up to them when i see um out.

    I’m on my second 3G. Drove the first one for 17 years. So far, nearly 4 years on this one. Both 2001.
    First one I bought, back in 2003, for $7,500USD.
    Second, bought in March of 2020 for $3,700CAD.
    Let people keep sleeping on these gorgeous machines. Keeps the prices down for replacement cars/parts.
    Not to mention, in my honest opinion, this is the last real Eclipse. 4G looked a mess, had such little space between dash and windshield - it felt squished. And don’t get me started on the xOver……

    Back in 2007 I had a 2003 eclipse GTS coup with the 5 speed and really quite enjoyed it. I liked how in the GTS, it had a two tone leather. Dark blue and black. Very subtle but it was there. It was a decent road trip car when it was just me. Fun to drive.
    Today I have a 17 mustang GT premium, so the eclipse definitely doesn’t hold its own with that car, lol, but as you said, in its own right it was a fun car.

    The 6g75 3.8 fits with little effort and has 263bhp but with bolt ons and a tune I've seen 310-340 at the wheels..

    • @tylerspecht7553
      @tylerspecht7553 11 місяців тому +1

      If you are talking specifically the 6g75 with mivec yes you can maybe get those numbers. I personally had a 4g eclipse gt with that motor of course and it made 290wheel on a dynojet with headers, proflo throttle body, hackish tune, injen cai, 3rd cat delete, and magnaflow exhaust with removed rear muffler for it. I think to get 310+ you gotta get plenum spacers, and port out the intake manifold and maybe go for like a 93 octane tune mine was 91 octane tune

    • @blue_lancer_es
      @blue_lancer_es 11 місяців тому

      @@tylerspecht7553 you still had cats. The ones I've seen use diamante headers(supposedly the best ones) we use 93 octane also. Most are in mirage chassis. You can also use tiburon v6 transmissions be it 5 or 6 speed. Theres a lot of potential on that engine.

    • @tylerspecht7553
      @tylerspecht7553 11 місяців тому +1

      @blue_lancer_es I didn't still have cats. All longtube headers get rid of cats unless they come with hfc's. I ditched that platform a while ago but it was an decent engine for the time frame. It would be cool to see their review of a 4g eclipse gt with that motor

LOVED the look of the 3rd generation Eclipse and agree that they knocked it out of the park in that department. If only they would have continued offering it with the 4G63 and AWD options, I think Mitsubishi could have sold many more of those, I certainly would've likely replaced my totaled 2nd generation with one.

    The 3G is a decent handling car and a great handling car with a few mods.
    If you keep the rpm's up it makes up a little for the low torque. The lower end is good for 300HP to the rear er front wheels, you'll prob need to turbo to get that though. Or just re-motor. A couple of electric motors at the rear wheels?

    After seeing the SST prototype at auto shows in the late 90's, what we actually got as a production car was a big letdown. Gone was the Turbo 4G63 and AWD shown in the prototype and in went the 6G72 (or worse, the 2.4 liter 4G64) along with FWD as the sole drivetrain option.
    I suppose it made for a cool 'hairdresser' car, but it lost the essence of what made the previous two generations great. It's like the 280ZX compared to the 240, 260 and 280Z, a great canyon carver turned boulevard cruiser.

    You say in the video that the 2.4 in these are not very tuneable. This is actually wrong. If you swap over to an evo head (easy job really) you can put the redline at 7k rpm and get power that way (engine is safe at 400hp with the head swap). Or turbo manifolds from 4g63 fits the 4g64. So worst limitation is really the gearbox, not the engine

    I'd say you got a great car for that money. What'd you have to do? Put a battery in it? Were there any other repairs needed? I like the look of all the Eclipses. This generation is good too.
    It's really a shame that cars aren't really selling anymore, otherwise Mitsubishi may have made a modern Eclipse instead of the Eclipse Cross. But, you can't invest huge amounts of money into a platform that nobody (or very limited numbers of people) will buy. It doesn't make business sense. And that is why you have the Eclipse Cross. People are buying crossovers now. Mitsubishi tried to give the Eclipse Cross some influence from the Eclipse. I just wish they'd come out with a high performance version of it. There is the Ralliart version that just came out, but it's an appearance package at this point. I must say though, the Eclipse Cross does handle great with Mitsubishi's S-AWC.
    I think this car is just cheap fun. Keep the videos coming Brendan.

    The 3rd Gen is more "FTO" then it is "Eclipse" imo. That being said this was the "it" car back in the day, anyone remember the commerical featuring Dirty Vegas that Dave Chappelle parodies? In 2 fast 2 furious this was tyreses' ride and it was a definite fit....at this point in the history performance took a step back it was all about 20"s and Sound Systems. It wasnt so much "serious sport compacts" anymore as it was now "sporty" compacts...think Scion tC, Hyundai Tiburon, Cavalier Z24, Altima V6 Coupe, Mazda3 S 2.3, Stratus R/T...etc. All of these prioritize daily drivability over straight hard edge performance.

    I wholeheartedly believe that 2F2F is the only reason people hate this car. I think people saw the tacky paint and oversized rims with the shitty widebody and immediately hated it. Some DSM nerds will say "wahh it doesn't have AWD so it's bad" ok most 2gs, unless you got the higher trims, were FWD too, and even the AWD ones were mostly FWD. "waaahh you cant tune it like you can with a 4g63" ok swap one in its not a hard swap, but considering that 90 percent of 2g eclipses are broken down or abandoned and these are still all over the road, maybe dont put a 4g63 in it. People saw the horrid 2F2F car and pulled Nickelback where they found any other reason to hate it irrationally. I've had mine for a year and other than a 3000gt, it is the most fun car I've ever driven. Buy one people

  • @montysport94
    @montysport94 Місяць тому

    I don't think anyone hated this car more than the people who owned them. The Club3G forums were brutal, especially to young kids who bought these second hand hoping to fulfill their fast and furious fantasies.
    Hindsight shows that when a brand decides to go a different direction with a certain model, it's rarely met with open arms. People don't like change, but it was a new millennium. New safety and emissions standards, the DSM partnership had dissolved, the new Evo was coming to the US market and you can't have two competing models.
    People tend to forget the sport compact market that this car competed in was never meant to be a group of quarter mile monsters. The RSX, Celica, Cougar, Tiburon, Beetle Turbo S, all of them were FWD and only the 3G and RSX could break 200 hp, yet it was a hot market segment at the time.
    The lack of tunability was overcome by the community somewhat. For the 4 Cylinder, DOHC and turbo swaps were common. Some even did AWD swaps but not as many. the 4G64 block was a bored out 4G63 and could handle boost easily. There was also a RIPP supercharger available for the V6 plus plenum and TB swaps from the larger 3.5.
    A lot of the issues this car had were mostly just indicative of it's time. Cheap interiors, cracked dashes, bad paint, squeaks and rattles were pretty common on vehicles from the 2000s.
    Would I buy one today? No. There's zero factory support for these cars, the aftermarket support is dwindling, the community is extinct. It's a dead platform. A manual V6 is also hard to come by, especially in good shape.

    The 2nd gen and the 4th look hands down the best.
    The 1st plain looking the 3rd got away from its roots.
    The 2nd handles better the last is too heavy for acting a fool in curves.
    I own a 2g non turbo thinking about buying the last gen and call it a day.
    The bunny kit looks good on tbe 4g.
    Many kits look cool on the 2g.
    My issue is beefing up my 2g that didn't come witn a turbo but since the automatic can't handle the power toooo much I could live with it for a while longer and try an ITB mod and settle for fairly quick anything is better then racing a GEO Metro in a dead heat! 😡
    Passing smog may be a b***h but I'll try to keep my enthusiasm from getting out of hand.
    The last Gen has a gas gobbler V6 but I think I can TRY to keep my foot out of it if I decide to move up.
    Its always someone challenging my 2g!
    I can be minding my own business and they pop out the woodwork and I hate to lose especially to an American 2+2 🤨
    I would love to teach them guys a lesson or two 😡

    Contemporary Mitsubishi is a different company to the one that made the Evos, Eclipse Turbos, 3000gt/GTOs. Today it's less about making interesting cars, or pushing the envelope, and solely about making cars that earn them money.

    3rd gen Eclipse is about like the 7th gen Celica. Both are compared to their past, though I'd say the D52/53A Eclipse is hated more than the Zzt231/230 Celica. If I found one for sale (GT or GTS) I'd consider it as for some reason I've always liked the Eclipse regardless if it's the loved generations or the two that followed before it became an CUV.
