I’VE BEEN CHRONICALLY OBSESSED WITH THIS SONG SINCE 2:37 AND I HAVEN’T BEEN ABLE TO STOP PLAYING ITTTT. Like this song is perpetually on loop. I feel bad cause I definently betrayed and abandoned my girl “After Midnight”😭 It always tries to come on after this song and im like, “sorry sis but you need to SHUT UP cause ‘Good Luck, Babe’ needs to play again!!!”😭😭
She’s saying good luck to the girl in suppressing her true self because being in denial in your own closet SUCKS. “You’d have to stop the whole world just to suppress your queerness.”
As a Gen Xer and mom to Millennials, this song hit hard. I went to school with several people who got married, had kids, owned the white picket fence and then later divorced and came out. Also, some of my daughters' friends who are not straight got married to men young to appease their religious right families. Those forced marriages never worked out.
This song is about being with someone who hasn’t fully accepted they’re sexuality and wants to suppress it and she said it also was also a little bit of talking to her old self
People throw this term around but I really think Good Luck Babe is a cultural reset. It’s just phenomenal. Plus Chappell’s vocals are EVERYTHING. You’re spot on about the lyrics too. It’s such a complex song.. so sad, so empowering, also social commentary but so beautiful.. Chappell is such a talented songwriter ❤
You were absolutely correct, the story of the song is about comphet. Women who experience sexual or romantic attraction to other women, but from social conditioning are in domestic partnership with men. There's a lot of pressure and influence on women especially that they are expected to fulfill their roles as romantic partners to men regardless of their desires. I will note that gay and bisexual men also experience comphet, but the two experiences aren't quite the same because of the added layer of patriarchy that gay and bisexual women have to suffer under. It was incredibly intelligent of Chappell to have this as a theme for her song, because it's queer theory made in such a way that anyone can understand, and hopefully a lot of women who are experiencing attraction to women but haven't reached that realization yet can hear this song and be fully liberated! ♥️♥️♥️
you’re so right that it expresses so much theory in one song and story. I think the bridge especially conveys the extra layer of misogyny and patriarchy in comphet because you know that if it were a man, the equivalent would be “she’s nothing more than you’re wife” which is sad and lonely but without the extra layer of degradation and dehumanisation of being “nothing more than his wife”. Obsessed.
Apparently Chappell wrote this with her own experiences of feeling peer pressure to be with men. So she's SINGING IT TO HER OLD SELF about what would have happened to her if she denied her own sexuality 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
@@Kitty-Glitter aaaaah, I have heard of comphet before, thank you, the term was there but I couldn't remember the colloquial word and my sociological self would have called it compulsive heteronomity... So I just avoided using the word 🤣
When you clocked the production at the end and the lyrics being intentional, I just knew you're LEGIT! like a lot of people miss it, which is absolutely fine, but whenever people get the intentionality of it I get so so so hyped because it was absolutely GENIUS! ❤️❤️❤️
this song makes me cry!! i grew up in the Midwest before gay marriage was legal and like Chappell i was so in denial and closeted to even myself (while i was actively hooking up with all genders lol). it took years to accept i was queer and even then i never thought i would come out. it also reminds of someone i dated who broke my heart when she told me even though she’s lesbian and has no attraction to men, she knows she will ultimately marry and have kids with a man because she doesn’t want to lose her whole religious and conservative family. i feel so lucky my most important family members aren’t raging homophobes.
chappell roan is soooo good at bringing country-esque vocal details like the forced flip into her music! definitely a good example to cite when explaining those terms
As someone who is Bi, I feel what she's saying. There's an undeniable struggle at first. Like dipping your toe in the water. And it might be the wife's first step into a new side of her sexuality... BUT it's not cool to lead people on, or treat them like experiments,. Emotions are real, and they can be hurt.
Idk if there’s something wrong with me but sometimes I resist getting into new artists because I’m like damn now I have to stan somebody else I don’t have energy for that. I even did that with Chappell after I kept seeing stuff about her everywhere. LIKE A DUMMY. Now I’m fully obsessed.
The producer is Daniel Nigro. The same one who produced Olivia Rodrigo’s Sour album. He is quickly becoming a prominent producer in the music industry.
I think the story is implying that two girls are very obviously in love, one denies the fact that she could be a lesbian, so she ends up getting married to another man, ended up regretting it, and Chappell refered to it as an affair because while she was married, they were still in love, I could be very wrong whatsoever, that's what I understood.
i think explicit love affair just meant because the girl was not out, so they were a thing secretly. she couldn’t be possibly be married at the time when she was saying she could kiss a hundred boys in bar 😂 i think the bridge part is also in future tense that has not happened yet
The lyrics video for this is chock full of symbolism with all the stock photos, implying that there are literally no photos of them as a couple. So good.
My music taste is all over, but its mainly 80s music so Chappell bringing that back makes me so excited. Sabrina brought it back too here n there with the new album.
I subscribed the moment it all fell in place for you! Compulsive heterosexuality hurt both of them. From experience it is a very hard situation to deal with.
Hey I loved your reaction ! Would you please do a video where you react to a few of Kelly Clarkson Kellyokes ? That would be a vocal treat for you and all of us 😀
While the best video of this to react to is the black swan/white swan Fallon show performance (people should check out black swan Chappell too in the interview segment), the lyric video for Good Luck Babe is very good as well. It helps to comprehend the narrative.
in summation: good luck with trying to figure out what to do when you realize many years later that what you really need is a femininomenon and should have taken that casual affair you had with a super graphic ultra modern girl seriously
girl you should try listening to this one small artist thats blowing up named "Yaelokre", their voice is insane, one ep and they have 2 mil listeners on spotify as i write this. ive been dying to see other people listen to their music and i want to spread the word
I saw a few comments but straight out of her own mouth this song is about someone she was interested in but showed no interest in her and that was a sarcastic way of her saying good luck babe
I am SO EXCITED that you are hearing Good Luck Babe too 🥰🥰🥰 For your own viewing pleasure, I HIGHLY recommend checking out Sabrina Carpenter's cover of this song for BBC Live Lounge. She does a lovely chill slightly country spin on it that's super pleasing to the ear and you can hear that she just loves the song. Then I will link it in a new comment, a newish UA-cam singer/songwriter is recording covers of songs... But from the other person's perspective 🥰 it's really creative 🥰 I also highly recommend Chappell's live performance of this on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. She's so GOOD!!!

The term is compulsory heterosexuality or comphet

One who's GROUNDBREAKINGLY good, too! We've had some sprinkles of it here and there, but never much of it, and never this good.

Yes! I often find this song too hard to listen to. As a southern queer it's just so incredibly painful. But truly a masterpiece
