I thought they dropped her after pink pony club and she wrote California about that experience. Idk like maybe she still had a couple songs to do under contract but knew she was done with them after.
@@vykepp5709 She released two songs after Pink Pony Club, Love me Anyway in May and California before Atlantic released her. Not to defend Atlantic, but Chappell had been wildly unproductive. She was signed in 2015 and had released on EP in 2017. So in 2020 when she released Pink Pony Club, a totally new sound, and it did nothing, I can see why they were like after five years this is going nowhere. You're absolutely right about the 'persona' thing. She's said quite a few times that Chappell is a character, almost a drag persona, and that in real life she's very different.
California makes me cry every single time, because you're so right you can just FEEL the heartbreak coming from that song because it was very real for her, Arguably probably hurt more than romantic heartbreak. She left everyone knew and loved for a chance at a musical career, signed to a big label out of high school, and thought she was finally in the big city and out of her small town. This song was written by someone who thought she failed, she thought she disappointed and let down everyone who supported her dream, and instead of seeing her hometown as something she was stuck in with no opportunities, it was now a warm blanket waiting to welcome her back home. Truly the most bittersweet version of the grass is always greener.
In Pink Pony Club, she goes heavy on the first vocal flip because she's playing the mother expressing her full-throated disapproval. She goes light on the second because that's the daughter's response, speaking her truth even though her voice cracks.
She’s addictive. I’m nearly 50, she’s 26ish and she hits right at home. Thank you for this review. I pray it’s only the beginning of an amazing career. Man, what an artist.
Hands down the best vocalist in pop right now. Every artist has their own unique sound.. Chappell has every sound. The versatility, the emotion, the control, the range, just everything about her. Over time she will likely cement herself in history as one of the greatest artists of all time. Meteoric rise. If you want to hear even more unique styles, listen to read and make out, meantime, and cleopatra. They are my top 5 right now with kaleidoscope and picture you
I agree, I think California is the one that feels the most like heartbreak because iit's about when she wasn't making it : she thought she failed and lost her dream
On Pink Pony Club you commented about her pulling herself back and changing the dynamics. The first part of that verse is her mother crying out at her and the second is her more reserved response explaining to her mother what she wants. Her songs are personas within personas :D.
I love that designer Betsey Johnson adores her and gave her that outfit. Her voice hits my soul. Her album is great but her lives are even better because she’s amazing to watch, so incredibly expressive.
This performance was my first exposure to Chappell Roan, and is still my favorite. She is so raw and fun in it. I want a special edition of her album done like this.
Yes California hits every time, but also really listen to kaleidoscope she has the immense ability of instilling her emotion so well that we can feel it. She’s a true gem in glad you felt it too
Have you seen the music video for California? The video is exactly what you described about how the song made you feel. That's a testament to the strength of the song writing.
What I love about this reaction (other than the sheer joy you’re experiencing) is that every single one of these songs were, upon your first reactions, your lesser liked ones. I love that, not only can music sneak up on us, but also how much difference a live performance can make to our experience of a song. Your first impression of California was kinda “meh” and you admitted you didn’t love it, which is totally valid. To see you go from that to starting to cry during it is such a testament to not only how incredible Chappell (and the entire band!) are live but to how much all the little gestures, facial expressions, and vocal rawness of a live performance can connect with us like no other, especially when you’re as charismatic a performer as Chappell. Thank you so much for this reaction. It was a blast. And thanks in general for all the hard work you put into your videos. It’s much appreciated. ❤❤❤
She's a true performer. She absolutely nails the era and feel of times she never even lived through. That takes such a high level of empathy and depth of emotion. Her skills could be half what they are and she'd still be amazing as a performer but the fact that her talent is top notch just *chefs kiss* I enjoy her in her entirety as an artist. I enjoy that she is still refusing to let go of her humanity and even presses fans to take a deeper look at parasocial behaviors and the negative effects they have, thus asking us to also hold tight to our own humanity and empathy for others. I can't say enough good things about my favorite artists favorite artist.
7:17 I believe it has something to do with the lyrics. The first (gooOOOD what have you done) is more forceful because it's the mother's declaration of disappointment, while the soft (iiIII'mmm just having fun) is her reasoning/explanation to momma to help simmer her down.
I’m so glad I am not the only one who gets this emotional over music and film 😂 it truly is the only time I can let out a real cry, the only time I can really let out any tears That’s what LOVE about Chappell. You can hear the range and styles but also her appreciation for them all. She really does have an otherworldly and mesmerizing voice. It just gets you in the gut and soul that is almost unheard of in mainstream music now. It’s divine ❤❤❤
GUYS!!! We have have HAVE to get her into Caroline Polachek! The vocal flipping, the agility, the versatility of classic opera training to hyper-stimulating pop? She will be obsessed with her!!!
I'm a new GenX Swiftie (thanks to TTPD) and because of this, I've been opening up to more pop singers. Most of the genre itself is not my jam but we are in the midst of some seriously talented female artists right now, so I am loving these rabbit holes. I grew up w/ The Cure, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Depeche Mode, Kate Bush, Blondie, The Smiths, Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin, Annie Lennox. I'm loving CR so far and her look (brand) reminds me of - if Amy Winehouse and John Waters (drag-scene-legend) had a baby. PS: LOVE your channel!!!
I was so excited to see your reaction to the flips in Picture You haha I've never been able to do it either to make the flip actually happen but Chappell is so flawless with it
You should check out her video where she does a cover of 4 Non Blondes song "what’s going on." Might be her best vocal gymnastics of any song she sang. It’s just perfect.
As a musician, teacher, and vocal coach myself I generally take content creators with a grain of salt, but I get so much joy out of watching your content. Your joy in what you do is infectious, and your knowledge of the subject matter always shows through. As for Chappell, we love her. I love the interview she did when she said it was some twink at google that loves her and changed what comes up when you google her AND gave Sasha Colby credit for the favorite artist’s favorite artist reference. I was like “Oh girl, it’s the twinks, otters, wolves, bears and everything in between. We all stan Chappell Roan!” 😂
I think maybe the heart break feeling in the song California is the heart break of a failed dream. It sounds like she moved out to make it big, like many do when they go to California. Seems like she was having a tough time getting her foot in the door and calling her parents for advice or something. 😁
Have you reacted to RAYE yet? If not, her live medley performance at the Brit awards (where she won a record breaking 6 awards) is the perfect place to start! One of the most spectacular live singers around right now
She’s such a whacky lady when she is performing, but she is still performing when she stops singing. She’s putting on a voice and mannerisms, and is totally different when she isn’t “on”.” To paraphrase her, she is working and is Chappell from the second she appears to the second she leaves.
