The way the majority of barrel racers whip and starfish their horses makes me sick to my stomach. As a barrel racer myself, I threw all of my spurs and whips away when I was 9 years old, stopped starfishing and stop whipping because it doesn't do shit, I learned how to properly ride and gain proper balance without having rubber bands tying my feet to the stirrups. I was young and didn't even know that horses felt more pain than humans. I am now 16 and want other barrel racers to know that you do not need to beat your horses to win. Horses are like vehicles, they both have speed limits. Once they reach their speed limit, they can't go any faster, so when you kick and beat your horse, it isn't doing anything but causing pain. I don't even have to kick my horse to get him to gallop in our runs, all I do is make a kissing sound 3x and he goes and no matter what time we get I am proud of him and pet him before and after. That's what barrel racers should do. They shouldn't be beating and abusing their horses just for prize money.
And all of you other barrel racers saying 'it's normal' and that 'they don't feel it', 'horse skin is thicker than human skin', no, starfishing and whipping your horse is NOT normal, they most DEFINITELY feel it, and they DON'T have thicker skin than humans, in fact, they have more nerves than us which means they feel 4x more pain than we do. So don't be going around saying that abusing horses is normal. Because it's not and you're absolutely terrible for it. If you have to rely on whips, spurs, harsh bits, etc. just to win money then you shouldn't own horses period.
🥺🙏💯
Oh my god! Amazing! And it is okay! We all make mistakes. And we learn from them.❤️💕
I cried seeing her whip that creature.... the fucking entitled selfishness of it. Come at me people cause, seriously, NOTHING justifies it.
Not all barrel racing is abusive, a little kick is ok to get your horse moving faster. But if their already going as fast as they can it’s just horrible, there are still good barrel racers out there!
Well. I’n barrel racing the horse has to go fast around the barrels. The people are trying to get more speed by leaning or kicking . It’s not hurting the horse. Keep in mind some horses are big.
Lol. If someone stomped on your ribcage, and you were 6’5, would it hurt any less than if you were 4’?
@@glow674er2 horses are very strong . All disciplines have a abuse . I have kicked a bit harder but my mom has helped me. . A little kick is ok like you said but yanking on the reins and stuff are not very nice . I have horses of my own.
@@Rivalstarloverforever I agree, all disciplines definitely have their abuse, and all riders need to work hard to put their animals first. Whilst a kick here and there is not necessarily an issue, constant can be. Horses are strong, but fragile at the same time
@@glow674er2 .yes I agree with you a lot but I’m a barrel racer and don’t abuse. I only really know how to. Canter .
Those American paints are so beautiful
Thanks a lot. I was so glued to watching each run so much, I didn’t realize the tea I was pouring was overflowing on my desk, lol 😂
Love watching these!!
You know this is abuse right?
@@Pink_equestrianit’s not abuse
Yes ofcource whip and kick the horse yo full speed and then start to pull the reins as hard as you can! Really good horsemanship!
lol Lemme guess? Non-equestrian that knows nothing.
@@-BrowniePoints-More like an equestrian with a heart for their 4legged friends..
Would like to whip people so they run as fast as they can... those who think whipping a horse that excessively just for speed is ok.
Lemme guess: Yank.
@@ihintzablue686 Mayby?
@@-BrowniePoints- I mean, they're not wrong. there's literally no need to kick your horse that much running home, especially with spurs. and there's no need to whip either. we all know that a horse will only go as fast as it wants, and all of those horses are fully stretched going as fast as they can. the whipping and kicking is doing absolutely nothing but putting more pressure on a horse that is already exhorting everything it has. as for pulling up on the reins, I don't see them pulling as hard as they can, nor is the horse throwing their head so I think that may be a bit of a stretch. but stopping off of *mostly* leg pressure and body movement is always better than pulling the reins, imo (ETA: I don't mean NEVER pulling on the reins, only that shouldn't be where MAJORITY of the pressure is). nobody is perfect, but the excessive kicking and whipping isn't necessary.. -an equestrian/barrel racer.
Not the best barrel racing I’ve ever seen. I was a barrel racer when I was young. I didn’t whip my horse. He had a heart & wanted to win. He loved it & so did I.
I agree
🙏 That whipping is what threw me off. Glad to know there were/are people who can just do fine without it!
The ones that do the best are always the ones that aren’t abusive!
I love sm how they arent abusing love these runs!
Is that supposed to be sarcastic or serious? Because this is clearly abuse.
These are beautiful runs half the people in the comments have probably never ran barrels.... And the rest are probably English Riders.
This is clearly abuse

@@Pink_equestrianhave you ever been in the saddle of a barrel racing horse? I’m sure you haven’t bc you are most likely an English rider that knows hardly nothing about barrel racing so if I were you I’d shut my mouth 😊
This is amazing!! The runs and everything!!
I just discovered barrel racing from a dating profile of a girl who does it. This looks interesting.
Also, the background music of this video really slaps. Damn... It's got me all pumped up lol.
Yea because abuse is very interesting.
Just like you pull your remote control or joystick?
Love these run!
This isn't real barrel racing. This is just sitting in a saddle and whipping and kicking.
Okay the riders look like over-cooked noodles on the horses and just TWO POINT!
??? Your comment gave me a headache, please proofread.
I’m craving whiskey. Pendleton whiskey.
I do barrel racing and I’ve won saddles
That's fantastic!
Notice how Hailey &Jimmie (last two riders, 2nd and 1st place) could do it without non-stop kicking and whipping their horses and flying all over the saddle. There's no place for abuse in horsemanship, champions cooperate with their horses and encourage their desire to win. You can't force an animal to have a champion's drive and spirit. Violence kills trust and kills spirit.
Beautiful
my gurl Kaitlyn trulove will be there one day ❤
I so badly wish the barrel community would grow the hell up and actually realize that excessively kicking your horse with spurs on does absolutely nothing to make them go faster and neither does whipping. I used to do it too and I realized my horse ran much better and free-er without all that extra shit. I have NO doubt those horses are well kept for, I mean.. look at them. I just wish we would stop normalizing the misuse of a crop/whip and spurs and go back to using them for what they were intended to be used for. AN EXTENSION OF YOU. Horses work AMAZING off of pressure work. my horse will go from a dead stop to a full gallop by a squeeze and a smooch. inside leg to pick up her shoulder, outside leg to drop and follow through. running home, another smooch and ONE OR TWO kicks. 1D barrel horse in her prime. It's really not necessary and everyone saying it is, is just lying to themselves. get a grip.
and before the "stay up north", "PETA lover", and "non-equestrian" comments roll in - I'm from the south. PETA has me blocked on every single platform bc I called them out on their shit. I've been riding horses since I was 2, training since I was 10, and barrel raced for over a decade (including training my own barrel horse). get over yourselves.
Emme that is how barrel racing goes
If you guys think this is abuse in any way why spend time to write a comment saying “how abusive it is” and just not watch the video at all! These horses are fine they are trained to do this!!!! And saying it is abuse is NOT going to stop me from barrel racing
I'm all for horse sports, and no one is stopping you from barrel racing. But as soon as there's excessive kicking and whipping it is definitely abuse.
@@klaviergavin9936it’s all part of the show I promise we aren’t hurting our horses
I swear to god, if a video features a horse, the comment section is guaranteed to be full of weirdos pretending moral superiority.
My apologies to everyone, who is a professional barrel racer him or herself, but what is shown in this video is not normal in any way.
I've been riding horses for more than 15 years now, not the western style, but I'd say it's a strict rule in horseback riding in general, that you DO NOT whip or kick your horse like that, especially with spurs on. Never used spurs in my life, never had to, a gentel nudge with the lower leg (not the heels), and my horse moves forward. And if I want to go faster, I use my voice and nudge a bit harder, but never kick, under no circumstances. And there is literally no excuse for this, it is just plain cruel and unforgivable, in my opinion. I like watching the sports events, but only local ones, because usually there isn't that much pressure behind them, so the riders aren't required to do stuff like this - because as mentioned by many many former jockeys, show jumpers, dressage riders etc. there is a lot of shit they do to their horse to win. This is no exception.
If you do any of these sports, good for you, as long as both of you have fun and you are not hurting your horse in either way. As I mentioned, I like watching it, as long as it is kept in check and doesn't end up in abuse, like this did.
Also I've read in the comments something along the lines of 'they don't get hurt, they bite each other a lot harder when they play'. A horse can feel a fly on any part of its body. A fly. And can move any muscle with the precision of a sniper. They feel literally everything. The slightest touch. And yes, they can hurt each other while playing, doesn't mean that it's not painful for them. Ever touched a horse, that had a biting wound on its head from a little playfight? Yeah, they FLINCH.
So what you are saying is you have no idea what's actually happening because you've never done it. No, they aren't hurting them. Feeling it doesn't mean pain
@@elliesouza717 You know it hurts to hit yourself with a sword, even though you've never done it, right? Same logic.
Amen. Also the argument that they bite each other harder... well they only do if certain borders were crossed and to show another horse their place... and it's not like they bite each other all the time, while if a human would always ride like shown in the video..... that's as if you've got an abusive parent always hitting you.
@@elliesouza717Did you hear about the Modern pentathlon in Tokyo 2020? The one with animal abuse on a horse? Charges were made against the athelete and trainer just because she was whipping her horse more than necessary. Resulting in riding being taking out of the Modern pentathlon entirely.
Now compare that to the kicking+whipping shown in this video. Same thing.

I love barrel racing but what’s with the excessive whipping and kicking it’s just disgusting
Doesn’t look as fast on video zoomed in and tracking as it does in person seeing the whole picture. Not saying they aren’t fast. Just doesn’t seem as fast on here as it does when you’re at the rodeo. This is one of the funnest events. When those girls hit that 3 barrel it’s like kicking on an after burner and they are getting it back to the exit.
They need to stay in the saddle better, loosen the reins, learn not to use spurs like daggers, and for gods sake stop whipping the horse. Theyre letting money come before horsemanship and no ines saying anything about it.

Which horse shows signs of abuse??
Contrary to popular belief, it actually does hurt a horse to slam your heels as hard as you can muster into their ribcage, and to whip them repeatedly. If someone took their foot and squared you in the ribs, would it hurt? Horses have even more nerve ending than us, and can feel the pain tenthfold.

I swear all these hate comments are getting me sick
Yeah same!!! It’s not even close to abuse and if most of these people were professional barrel racers they would understand
Well maybe these so called “pro” barrel racers shouldn’t beat the shit out of their horses like that and actually learn how to ride. If you don’t know how to make a horse run without whipping or starfishing them, you don’t know wtf your doing and should not be riding, let alone competing. All that damn adrenaline is getting to their heads
@@kayleemarie1901they aren’t and have you ever done barrels?
@@DIRTBIKE438all of my mother’s side has done barrels and other rodeo events and I’ve seen. I’ve been around horses for a very long time. These riders were whipping their horse 9+ times I’ve seen! That is abuse. You don’t need to hit your horse that much, especially when they are literally already running at full freaking speed. Any good trainer will teach you to never overuse whips, spurs or the bit. These chicks make barrel racing look like abusive clown sh*t.
@@kayleemarie1901 yea I definitely agree with what your saying I looked back on it! I was just trying to say not all of us barrel racers are abusers I do it and bull riding

This Chicago boy snagged a barrel racer.. Were you aware with a lifetime of riding horses does to a woman's pelvic floor? I wasn't 🥰🥰🥰🥰
If I were King it would be required that all women were barrel racers.
Most if not all of the horses are pining their ears which can sometimes be because of pain. In this case I believe it is pain and they are annoyed. I mean who wouldn't if you know your giving your 100% and someone is kicking and using a whip/crop on you to make you do more. It's discussing.
Most the time it's so dirt, bugs, and air don't blast the horses ears. There are plenty more reason than pain or annoyance, I'm a 3 year barrel racer and my horse has fun running barrels. Also it's very, very rare we use crops/whips, the kicking depends on the rider and the horse.
Completely forgot to ad this; But these are very old and our rules have changed and advanced far more.
When a horse is running full speed their ears go back.
if they were annoyed they'd buck or kick or just simply stop moving and throw the rider. their fine. they love their jobs and treated like gods after, before, and always.
All horses pin there ear at gallop it is a known fact.
@@limelightherron2923 they don't always kick or buck but sometimes they do.
Very nice brave girl
Kicking a horse as hard as you can with metal spurs, whipping a horse repeatedly with a crop and yanking on their face isn’t brave. It’s pathetic
the way they are kicking, pulling and whipping at these horses is absolutely disgusting.
They liter aren’t have you ever rode a barrel horse or even done barrels bc u have to hold them back or push them sometimes
As a barrel racer u kinda gotta it only hurts the horse a bit and it’s normal okay
Edit:this was a year ago don’t reply, I know it’s star fishing. And it’s abuse WHAT I MEANT Was small kicks not huge ones, some horses don’t listen to kisses or leg and need kicks but gentle.
@@KF.WorkingRanch if it hurts the horse at all you shouldnt do it. ive ridden horses my whole life, simply applying leg can make a horse run, there is no reason to starfish and kick and hit the horse, especially with spurs.
@@elizafisk1091 sure youve gotta kick the horse every once in a while but not that hard
@@KF.WorkingRanch I understand sometimes having to kick a horse or even use a crop to get it going, but continuing to beat and kick a horse is just abusive. They just grow more blind to the leg you’re giving them, making you THINK you need to kick more. In reality, you shouldn’t - I remember when taking lessons, going into canter with the old horse I used to hsve to kick my leg as I slid it back to get it to listen. And then and realized overtime I should just slide it back gently and press until he listens and now he goes into canter just by a light slide of the leg. It’s give and take when it comes to training, and its not professional to be abusing your horse. I’m not accusing anyone of abusing, but starfish kicking is COMPLETELY unnecessary. You can even give a big kick without starfish kicking.
I always thought western is the more natural riding and not as much of an animal abuse as some english riders are showing. But the whipping and kicking you see in such speed western disciplines lets me think differently now... I think I prefer disciplines where you need more technique, and not whipping your horse so it goes as fast as it can....
they gotta make them move past, if u were actually a horseback rider and knew what you were doing, you would know thats how professionals do it.
No if they were professional riders then they should know how to make the horse go without having to whip and kick the crap out of the horses. Edit: Also if they actually knew how to ride then surely they would be more balanced, like literally they look like they are going to fly out of the saddle!
@@no-one3625 thank you for standing up for something you believe in barrel racer is the best thing
yes but as a barrel racer, I dont need to whip my animal for her to know she has to haul booty. she will do it with just kicks. the whips are unnecessary.
Any actual horseback rider (hi, right here) would know that there’s many ways to get a horse moving without resorting to these. The fact these ladies ride for years but apparently can’t get a gallop without whipping the crap out of their horse is pathetic
If they were a real professional, they wouldn’t need to slam their horses with metal spurs and snap a whip over their ass constantly. If you need to starfish and whip your horse to get them past a damn barrel you don’t know what your doing.
All of yours if you really tried it is fun trust me on that but then kicking is then wonting to win
Absolutely no need to whip the horse. My dad always said if you think you need to whip your horse to faster, get a faster horse. Whipping your horse doesn't make him/her go faster 🙄

@@DIRTBIKE438 depends on how you use the spurs. but that mentality is used by parents who abuse the shit out of their kids so it's not a good one to have. If you're using your spurs properly, not at all abuse. If you're excessively kicking them, that's a problem.

We don’t care about what you have to say!
Even if that was true, whips do. And the excessive kicking doesn’t do anything, so what’s the point of jamming a horse with spurs? I’m not saying all barrel racing is abusive in the slightest, but I’m saying it could be better. And in some cases it is, as with all equestrian sports. I’m not trying to be an internet trainer but like 🤷♀️

Do you guys see the way they are violently kicking these horses with spurs? Like starfish kicking the horse wasn't bad enough already. These people are straight up abusing their horses thats a reason why barrel racing has such a bad rep, and on top of that these people are incredibly off balanced they are so off balanced its embarrassing! They look like they are gonna fly out the saddle. And the way they are whipping and pulling on the horse's faces it's just abusive. Barrel racing by itself is abusive. Like all they do is run those poor horses In circles 24/7 thats why the horses are crazy in the head like if you watch a barrel racing event the way the horses are walking up the hallway is not normal. And some people might say "Oh my horse loves barrel racing like, he gets so anxious when he see's the barrels!" THATS NOT GOOD, he is anxious because he knows that if he doesn't go your gonna beat and kick the living hell out of him! The spurs and whips cause a TREMENDOUS amount of pain when used like this and can cause a series of serious problems with the skin and the bones, note that horse skin is thinner than human skin therefor they feel much more pain than people!
