Thanks for this tutorial. It's funny: when I first got V collection, I dismissed it as a simple synth, but then when I finally installed it and started going through the pre-sets, I discovered that numerous ones from this synth that are available in Analog Lab were ones that I had favorited. So it definitely can create some nice sounds.
Notes for myself VCOs 0:57 Volume for VCO 1 and 2. Just saw and pulse. Demo. 2:02 Also get a sub and noise. 2:19 On Pulse you can use Modulation dials and change the PW manually. 3:16 Sync VCO 1 and 2. VCO 2 is a little detuned by default. Sync will make VCO 2 follow 1, demo. 4:41 Put VCOs to 0 and get a phasy sound. Magic happens when you change VCO 2 freq, demo. 5:11 On Sync, something cool happens when you use the modulation section to to modulate the freq of VCO 2. VCF 5:30 Frequency (cutoff) and Resonance. Notch (select different filters - lowpass, highpass, bandpass), in the centre you're on Notch. Notch creates a negative value bump. 7:01 Bandpass. Opposite of Notch, works best with Resonance. Envelopes 7:50 Env 1 is amp env, controls volume coming out of the synth. ADS demo. 9:19 Env 2 works for modulation, prewired to Env 2 in VCF. Demo of it modulating. LFOs 11:21 LFO 1 knob. LFO 2. LFO 1 can do a sine wave. Can just change how fast LFO 1 is. Demo, turn Modulation up and switch VCF to LFO 1, cutoff freq goes up and down. 12:15 Sync to your DAW tempo, and you get note value divisions on LFO 1 knob. 12:36 LFO 2 is more featured. Change to LFO 2 is VCF. It can use different waveforms, Sinus, Saw and Square. 13:23 Retrig. LFO has a constant motion, demo of it when playing notes. Retrig makes the LFO restart when you play new notes. 15:21 Fade In knob makes it take longer to reach full modulation. On some synths you also get a delay control - delays the start of it. Modulation 16:55 Can do Frequency or Pulse Width modulation. You get Env 1 (amp env), LFO 1 and LFO 2 as source choices. Modulating LFO 1 PW (needs to be on Pulse), demo. Change speed with LFO 1 knob. 18:06 Modulating Env 1, PW. Modulate LFO Freq (pitch). Modulate Env 1 Freq. 19:10 Modifying Env 1 also modifies synth amp. On VCO 2 you can use Env 2 to modulate VCO 2 freq, demo. 20:08 Can sync different sources with each VCO. Output section at the right. Soft Clip on clips the signal, stopping it being very loud. 21:18 Overdrive section. Sounds cool with VCO sync on, demo. Chorus and Delay demo. 21:59 Disable VCO Sync, it sounds very different. Loses the Lead-ish tone. 22:30 Modifying freq, you get different timbres, can use different sources, demo. 23:01 VCF Modulation. Can Env 2 for modulation, demo. Can modulate positively for a wah effect - find a sweet spot with the modulation. Can modulate with a negative value, demo, freq starts up then goes down. How the sustain affects it. 25:00 Modulation with LFO 1, positive and negative. Pretty simple synth. To create ambient or crazier sounds you need the advanced section. Sub OSC 25:56 Sub wave. Choose from 3 waveforms. -1 or -2 octave selection. Blend it with your other Oscs to get something else. Find sweet spot with sub dial. Different waveforms give different subs. When you just use the main panel without the advanced section, the sounds you create sound vintage. The controls are found on a lot of modern synths but how everything works and the limitations let you create vintage sounds quickly. Arpeggiator 28:05 Sync to your DAW, change note values. Change freq, reso, adjust Env 1. 29:29 Hold setting. Change the order of the arpeggio notes, 4 simple settings. 30:28 4 Octave settings, demo. Tune/Portamento 32:12 Mono/Poly settings at the bottom. This synth can't do unison. 33:08 Tune dial, just a fine tune. Portamento, glide control, demo, simple control. If you play a note and release before the glide finishes, it remembers where the glide was and continues from there. 35:52 Pitch bend stick. Mod wheel does vibrato by default. Advanced/Modulation 36:27 On the main panel, you can't do modulation with Env 2 and LFO at same time, you can in the advanced panel. 37:12 Modulation section on. Reset all default settings to start fresh. Source (what's modulating), Destination and Amount. 37:51 Set up an envelope, classic wah sound. 38:41 Use LFO 1 to modulate VCF Freq, so it's being modulated with Env 2 then LFO 1. Add an Amount so it has effect. Doing envelope and LFO. Can use negative values. 39:44 Modulate VCF Resonance with Aftertouch, demo. 40:32 Modulate VCO 1+2 PWM with the Mod Wheel. Use pulse waves. Demo. 41:36 Modulate VCO 1+2 FM (frequency modulation) with mod wheel, demo. Can do several things with Mod Wheel at the same time, demo. Advanced /K.Follow 43:01 Extended keyboard control, select which keys will do what. Select what you're modulating, draw an envelope, demo with VCF freq - turn it up on the main panel. 44:59 Can do it with whatever you want, demo with VCF reso. 45:48 Draw the env different ways. Modulate LFO 1 Amount and give some values in VCF, keys above C3 given full modulation. So you get much different sounds with Advanced panel. 8 voice programmer 47:21 Don't have to use the arpeggiator but it sounds really cool with it. It's like an 8 step sequencer. 47:57 Select a Mode, select FWD - when you press a key it moves to the next step. 48:28 Already a VCO1+2 coarse instruction on the default patch, it changes the frequency. 49:05 Very useful with the arp. Sounds cooler with overdrive, chorus and delay. Press Hold on arp and it sequences it! 49:53 Modify VCF freq and reso. Turn on VCF freq. Draw a sequence for VCF reso. 50:46 Can skip steps - turn them off, demo, steps you turn off are applied to all modulations. Draw a sequence for VCA pan. 51:35 Modes. BWD (Backwards) demo. FWD BWD. Random. 52:27 Reassign (no mention in the manual about Reassign and FWD Retrig) 53:03 First note you play will be step 1, hold first note while playing a 2nd note to activate step 2 with the 2nd note, and so on. When you let go of a note, playing a new note will assign a new note to the step. 54:32 Remembers which which note was assigned to a particular step. 55:09 FWD Retrig - you need to hold a pedal note and play other notes for it to activate the other steps. FWD with arp Hold is amazing! Conclusion 56:30 The synth is classic sounds but with an extended (Advanced panel) mode. Check his Patreon.
Highly underrated piece of software. This is one where the iPad version is actually better because the level of each of the 6 mod slots for each of the 8 voices can be assigned a MIDI CC which is not possible on the VST. Then with something like the ERAE touch or similar you can send note and 3 controls (X, Y, Z) individually to each of the 8 voices or use those to control rate & depth of a MIDI LFO or envelope which then goes there.
Not 1 focking tutorial 'bout how to adjust the Pitchbender range ! To many times I have to deep dive to find this important parameter adjustment. It Sucks
