I think it's because in the first attempt many did not believe in a victory for LuBu, but then they see that Lu Bu slaughtered part of the enemy army and at the moment that Lu Bu comes out again through the other northern gate they are encouraged to follow him because they know who will beat to who and want to give him more spears to kill more enemies
