My grandpa was born there lived his whole life in morcome bay..lived on bare ave..so did my gran and both kids one being my mother..we lived in Scotland and drove down every Christmas from mid 70s to late 80s and this was the view we had every year
Yes Simon... Same era... Fishing/Crabbing at the boating lake.. Slots at the Alhambra.. Ghost ride at pleasure Park, candy floss, flea circus machine at peas Holme Park, chips (and fish if lucky) on way home.. Plus the constant craw from all the seagulls!!.. Ah.. Happy days!!
Spent holidays here as a kid 70's.....magical!!... Norman Wisdom throwing sweets out to us at the Winter Gardens.. Alhambra arcade.. Fishing, crabbing on boating lake and jetty, Peasholme Park at nightime, ghost ride at funfair, walked miles all day and never got bored... Fish n chip supper on way home to gran's as the night cooled off after a blistering hot summers day... Ah then do it all again the next day!!... Wow.. Magical!!
i remember when they was like that. morecame seemed magical when i was a kid with the fair and lights i ended up living there in my adult life for 15 years and it went so down hill.
Thanks for sharing - this brings back childhood memories of being driven by my parents from end to end followed by some time in Happy Mount Park on the little train - happy days! - Rach :)
Wonderful childhood memories of happy Sundays in Morecambe followed by a walk around Happy Mount Park when it was dark. We still love visiting the town, it's clean, tidy, lovely beaches and plenty to do and see, much better than Blackpool.
Thank you.. my name is Brian Wisdom i was born in morecambe in 1961 went to st Peters in Heysham then on to Heysham High i lved on Kinksay in Heysham till i moved away in 1985 abroard with work i use to come home twtice i year to see family stll come home but live in Bolton now i do miss the old Morecambe
Great to see the lights again. I'm old enough to remember that the run of illuminations went right down to Happy Mount Park where there was a great display. It all stopped around the time of your video. I have some movie of it somewhere.
Wow, i'm just old enough to remember the Morecambe illuminations, but I don't remember there that many lights, I now know what my parents were on about when they said towards the end "they're not as good as they used to be" Great video
I'm Justin Peters, Morecambe may play second fiddle to Blackpool with the illuminations. I very rarely visit the town and indeed nearby Lancaster. It's not an exciting place anymore even in summer. Even the funfair is not here, where I used to enjoy all the amusements, and my soft spot having grey stockingfeet in the Funhouse. I don't think the town will ever be the same again.
I remember when the illuminations started just after the war. Happy Mount Park had a special layout of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfes I used to lie in bed listening to it each evening as we lived in Bare. Coaches came from all over just like at Blackpool now. Trains ran excursions from Blackpool at the weekends. Then Lancaster took over the Council courtesy of Thatchers re-organisations, they cut off the money and Morecambe died - need we say more.
Used to love Morecambe illuminations, they were every bit as good as Blackpools but had even bigger stars of the time switching them on like Morecambe and Wise along with The Two Ronnies! Sadly what killed them was charging to get in Happy Mount Park when all the tableaux had moved into there and all there was on the promenade was just coloured lights! They finished in 1997!
gregorysimonanderson went 2 Morecambe 2day 2 see my nanas old flat and had a walk down the front 4 the first time in over 30 years.it woz a big part of my life.i will never forget.thanks
I agree, super vid. Never mind building flats/hotels or whatever they are planning to do on the promenade. How about bringing the illuminations back. Although I have hazy memories of the illuminations themselves I can remember the dissapointment when they went.
Barrow, now that is a dive, I should know I had the misfortune to live there for the first 24 years of my life. Now I live in another dive called Warrington (it wasn't when I first moved there in 2005 but absolutely is now)!
@gregorysimonanderson I've a feeling I can bring back more memories - cos I recognise that name - Let me try Low Lane - Mrs Jones, Mr Beckford, Mrs McKenzie, Mr Lord Mark Bales, Scott Seddon, Wayne Wilson Sharon Miller, Caroline Jenkins, Alison Bowker - oh and me - Joanne Halliwell
went to Morecambe on holiday late 70's early 80's - magical - went back around 2003 - heartbreaking

Do you remember the Busby display just outside Happy Mount Park? 🏞
It certainly does bring back memories I wish we still had them - Do you remember how pretty Happy Mount Park was all full of lit grottos and displays

Great video
It's because all the good stuff was moved into Happy Mount Park and in the last few years they went off by 10pm!
Great post, brings back some memories, even filled up a bit there.....
Excellent vid Greg. They should bring back them back. Certainly brought back memories.

It wasn't Thatcher who put Morecambe under Lancaster it was that Edward Heath, the same person who put us in the corrupt EU
Whoever did it, it was a BAD idea !
