Been using a drill for years even with standard taps just have to reverse to clear chips. Lots of forward and reverse but gets the job done faster and easier than a T handle.
Sorry, your initial tapping technique was/is all wrong. You always turn 1 or 2 turns clockwise, then 1/2 a turn or 1 turn counter-clockwise to break the swarf. No need to remove the tap completely from the workpiece. Basic tapping stuff. This makes sure the swarf is broken into small bits that work their way down the flutes of the tap and out the bottom. Yes a spiral tap will do a quicker job under normal circumstances.
When I'm tapping on the mills I rarely back out, but always do when hand-tapping. Depends on the tap too. Spiral point should not be confused with spiral flute. Lube oils aren't the best. Kero, ATF, and water are better. We want to cool as much as lube, and smoke is a sign of heat absorbed. IMO that's all good.
#1 you’re using a T-handle tap wrench for a 1/2” tap. #2 you’re using a cheap tap - pretty sure it’s not a ground tap. #3 no tapping fluid. #4 looks like hole is gloop small - you’re probably trying to cut 80% thread.
For a blind hole, use a spiral flute tap. The chips do not break, but twist back out of the spiral. Looks cool but works very well.

Kids, do not tap a thread like this. You will break a tap in a hole.

Everyone’s a troll, me I’d break the hole with a countersink before starting to tap.
Fourth, you do not have to back it out all the way...the flutes in the tap break off the thread material you are removing.
O’Boy ,Spit Is Better Than Nothing,Any Oil Will Work ,But Cutting Oil Is Best ,Don’t Force The Tap ,Put Lubricant On Every Pass ,Happy Tapping !!!
Ya right!
first off, get a real tap handle. Secondly, do it in a drill press. Third, get some tapping fluid
My drill press does not reverse to remove the tap ! So now what ?

The biggest mistake in this video was not telling viewers that the hole must be the correct size for the tap you want to use. FAIL
Dislike. This is a bad technique that will result in a broken tap.
nothing new here
